Happy Memorial Day everyone. I know it’s a few weeks away but I like to get my plugs in where I can. Isn’t in funny how the time seems to slip away? It seems like just last week I was wishing that winter would soon end and now I’m talking about the official kickoff of summer.; If you can, please keep in mind how important this upcoming holiday is. It just struck me as I write how ironic it is that we call it a holiday. To many it is a day of remembrance. It is a day that we should honor all fallen Americans that have not only given their lives for the safety of our country but a day to honor and remember the loved ones that have gone ahead of us in this race we call life. This upcoming Memorial Day will touch each and every one of us as we are affected in one way or another. It will also touch our District 6 race family

No on to the race stuff. There are a ton of great Now ev events coming up this month no matter what yo discipline. be one of the greatest programs I have seen in awhile. The entire program ran smoothly with each class lining up one after another on the gate and going off with precise timing. Owner Chad Gochenour ran the gate all afternoon and only stopped to prep the track at intermission which occurred at 1pm. Everyone was on their way home by 4pm on Sunday. Justin Barcia (51) swept the Lites B Stock and Mod. divisions.

Fresh off of an intense battle with Lowell Spangler and winning the 125 A class at Oak Hill was the unstoppable Kawasaki ride of PJ Larsen #27. Larsen was on the top of his game winning his motos and pulling out holeshots left and right, Larsen left no question that he was the fastest guy there on the weekend.

PJ Larsen won all premier expert divisions at the third NE area qualifier.

Justin Barcia #51, who was beat out buy Trettel and Wilson, redeemed himself at Tomahawk taking the hole shots and walking away from all competition pinning it around the track. By the end of Sunday’s races,

showed how to dominate the C class on a Honda with his smooth hole shots. Tyler Condon, who hails from Smithsburg, MD was fresh off of a 2nd overall in the Motocross C class at Budd’s Creek and numerous overall wins at Tomahawk’s opener. He made out fairly well in Sunday’s races taking a 1st in

The track was beautifully groomed and ready to withstand the weekend’s poundings but ended up a little slippery after heavy watering on Sunday with a few wrecks happening just before the 10 0 - f o o t e r. According to Tyler Condon #916, the track was “slick in the morning [becoming] nice and tacky later on in the day, nice ruts [and allowing] very high speeds.” Sunday’s race Local Tyler Condon races the MX Lites C division. schedule had to

he was showing off wheeling down the straight away into the corner and showing off his signature sick whips over the table top. Barcia, who won all of the Winter AM’s, is a prodigy on a Honda and a force to be reckoned with in the B class. Malcolm Stewart #271, also made an appearance at Tomahawk MX, finishing 2nd and 3rd in the B class and would have done better had he not wrecked around the first corner off the start on Sunday’s moto. Malcolm’s style around the track was very quiet but perfectly efficient; getting the job done without a lot of hype. Up and coming amateur, Tyler Condon #916,

his first moto but a nasty flip around the first corner from the start left him with a bullet man helmet to finish the race. This past weekend spent at the Tomahawk Motocross Park was a time well enjoyed by racers and spectators alike. For me, Tomahawk could not have been a more welcoming place as it was the launching pad and debut for my first major photography assignment for MRA. The schedule went off without a hitch, the track remained in good shape and the turnout of racers was great filling up almost all of the gates. Let’s see if Tomahawk can repeat such a stellar performance for the 2009 Loretta Lynn’s Qualifier.

Trailway Speedway PA Short Track - March 30, 2008 By Len & Ben Breech 7. Jeff McManus Jr. ; 8. Erin Kissinger ; 9. Nicole Mester ; 10. Beau Woodchuck

Varnes Victorious at Trail-Way Northeast ST Opener While Path Valley ran the previous afternoon, going by entries, most riders consider TrailWay’s March race the official start of the season. And National Number 89, Kevin Varnes, emerged on top of the three classes he entered with his Memphis Shades Yamaha/ Babe DeMay Racing Yamaha. He topped the 30 + and destroyed the overflowing Open A and Sportsman classes that had six heats each, with only the top two in each going to the final. As he had done in almost every heat race, Varnes jumped into the lead and pulled away. In the Open A, Evan Baer, Cory Texter and Roy Miller. Miller took third on the second lap, while Varnes started to pull away. As they started the final lap, Texter retook second. Going down the back straight, Baer had a ‘brain fart’, slowing down, thinking the race was over. After Texter and Miller blew by, Baer got on the gas before Mike Poe got by. The 30 + was another tough event, as Varnes took the lead from Ken Yoder, Miller and Aaron Humphrey. He stayed several lengths in front as Yoder and Miller battled for second. Rich Mellinger got under Humphrey off two on the fourth lap to take fourth. The Sportsman looked like a replay of the Open A, with a slight change in supporting players. Texter held second ahead of Chris Klinefelter, Tom McGrane and Baer. As Varnes methodically pulled away, the others held a close fought battle for second. Baer took fourth entering three on the third lap. Raun Wood got fifth a few laps later and pressured Baer in the late laps, but unlike the Open A race, Baer’s fourth place here was hard earned. Derek Hersh With many of last years B class winners moving up, several riders were ready to fill the void. After Erin Kissinger tucked her front tire off the first start, taking out half the field, Derek Hersh took the 250 B lead on his Don Kawasaki/Lancaster H-D sponsored Kawasaki over Haden Avery and a race long battle for third between Charlie Houck, Tyler Stacey, Jeremiah Snow and Jimmy Carr. Carr took fifth on the second lap and pressured Stacey for fourth. While Hersh pulled away, Carr used the outside line to take fourth on the

Hersh took second by the end of the first lap as Bartlett dropped back. Long took second on the third lap and stayed close to Woodrick. That paid off on the final lap when Woodrick slid out entering two with a several length lead. Stacey took the 125 lead and held it to the end with Carr, Houck, Tyler Phillips and Ryan Connelly behind. Snow took fourth by the seventh lap. Mike Mester showed why he is the top 40 + rider in the area, taking the lead from Jerry Steele, John Winsett, making a rare non-Path Valley start, Vernon (8) wins 250 B Caldwell and Lowell Wherley. While Mester pulled away, Winsett took second on lap two and Caldwell took third off four on the fifth lap. Till the end of the race, they stayed close in their battle for second. The Smith brothers shared wins, Chase in the 50 Chain, Colton in the 65. Cameron Smith, no relation, made his first start in the 85 (7-11) a winning one just edging by Colton off the final turn for the win. Tom Majeski took the Open Twins, while Jake Shoemaker won the 250 Sportsman.

Getting Sideways with Cory Texter Hey everyone, Well the good news is that the warm weather is finally starting to head onto the east coast, and the better news is that there have been races to go to every weekend. Although there haven’t been any AMA nationals since our week in Daytona, it is still awesome to stay in tune and work on polishing some of your skills before the national season starts up again. The only bad thing is that they have now canceled TWO races in our schedule this year. One was in Tucson, Arizona that was scheduled for April 5th and the other was Bulls Gap, Tennessee that was going to be run on July 7th. Hopefully the new people in charge of the series will start to get things ready for this season. It’s a bummer that they can’t get our premier series in order, but as long as I have races to go to, I’ll be happy. Once I get the letter off behind my number, that is! I feel like once you make the first one, the pressure is off and you can focus on new goals. I have ran 7 nationals and I have missed 4 of them by a total combined of like 1.5 seconds. It’s ok though, that’s in the past and I’m working on a new game plan for the future. Ah, District 6 dirt track races. District 6 is known for being one of the most premier dirt track districts across the United States. Mainly because of rider count, many race tracks to go to and all the competitive riders around the area. Our local expert class has anywhere from 20-35 racers at every race. With riders like Kevin Varnes, Raun Wood, Shawn Baer, Brandon Robinson, Shayna Texter, Don Mullen, Ken Yoder, etc., it supplies us with great competition. So far we have raced 4 local races. Two races at Path Valley Speedway, one at Trail-Ways Speedway, and one at a track in our hometown of Willow Street, PA. I won 4 out of 4 at Path Valley, finished two 2nd’s at Trail-Ways, and finished a 2nd and 3rd at Willow Street. It could have been better to finish with 8 out of 8 wins, but there was a couple things now looking back that I think we could of done to the motorcycle to help maybe get at least one or two more, but that’s ok we took the knowledge and learned from it. The next AMA national is schedule for May 24th and 25th at the famous Springfield TT and Mile. Jake Johnson has a sizeable lead in the AMA singles series over JR Schnabel and Kenny Coolbeth. Round 1 of the twins series will take place on the 25th at the mile. The mile will be my first on a 750 and the first time for me racing at Springfield since I won the amateur national mile event there back in 2005. I am real excited to get out there. In the meantime, we have a couple more local races schedule. Pagoda TT is on April 19th. This event was awesome last year with a lot of riders and I’m really looking forward to it. It is also located about 10 miles from where I grew up at, so a lot of my family members will be attending, including my mom and little brother and sister so that’s exciting. On April 25th, I am scheduled to do a big race in North Carolina that is put on by Poochie Cox of Cox’s Harley Davidson. It is paying a pretty good purse and riders such as Coolbeth, Mees, Varnes, Smith are all scheduled to be there, so I’m excited to get back on the track with all of them. Then on May 4th, we are racing the “new and improved” piston poppers TT. With the help of my Dad and Doug Hersh, they are completely re-shaping the track and putting all new dirt on it. If you were at the old track and didn’t like it, make sure you come to this event. The back straightaway is 25 feet away from the trees and it is looking to be a lot safer and a lot more technical. Sitting around and want to do your part to help our sport? Dirt trackers, motocrossers, harescramblers, trials riders, bench racers, racer moms, etc. Subscribe to Motorcycle Racing Action. Yeah, I know your probably thinking, why subscribe when I can get it for free at the track? Well, for only being 15 dollars a year, I think you can afford it. If it wasn’t for people like Jim Bull coming to support our events, our sport of racing motorcycles would only continue to diminish. So dig deep for that little extra money. Open your piggy bank or rob a candy store, whatever it takes to do your part to help out. I know I mentioned it in the last issue, but my new website CoryTexter. com is up and running. There is alot of cool stuff on it to check out. A history of my racing, my family, bio, schedule, sponsors, etc. My sister Shayna also has her website up as well. ShaynaTexter.net. Sign the guestbook and let us know you were there and what you think! I also wanted to send out some special thanks to all my sponsors who have been working so hard and helping me out this year. Also a thanks to my dad, my grandparents, Larry Burkholder, Rich Meisenbach, my buddy Weasel, Odie and Tammy Harrison, Doug and Tammy Hersh, Scuba Steve and Kim Connelly, and my sister Shayna! Thanks everyone and let’s get them this year!

“No matter how good you are, you can always get better, and that’s the exciting part” -Tiger Woods Enjoy the warm weather and see ya at the track! PA State Harescramble Series

Round #1 - Pine Grove, PA - April 6, 2008 Photos By Jim Bull

The quads were out in force - sorry we missed you.

Round # 1 of the BP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series took place in early April at the Dutchmen MX Park in Pine Grove, PA. DMX has hosted the first round of the series for as long as I can remember and typically that round came earlier in the year, usually on a frozen surface.

and I believe that the year end awards should be fantastic. Contact a representative at BPPoints.com for more info or see their representative Mike Ego at any state round. The days racing was exciting with all of the participants. It was a beautiful spring day and the starting lines were full. You can check out the results here and log on to our website to view all of the race images at: www.mcracingaction.com. Round two goes off at Ft. of Mountain the last weekend in April with the next three rounds scheduled in May. Round three will land at Evansville the first weekend of the month and will offer a youth eastern national harescramble on Saturday with the state round running on Sunday. Be sure to check this event out and stay tuned to the pages of MRA for your upcoming PA State Series coverage. Devrynn Clugston takes his first win in the 110 AC class.

The racers must have been chomping at the bit this spring due to the later starting date. As I rounded the last corner approaching the Dutchmen, traffic was at a complete stop. As a matter of fact and as I inched my way closer I realized that traffic was backed up from both directions approaching the track. Over 500 racers came out to participate in the day’s event indicating that the series is strong and that the racers of our area are ready to rock. This years PA State Series plays host to 15 rounds and on board this year we find a new title sponsor in Thor / Moose Racing. Parts Unlimited is the parent company to these brands

This month we would like to feature Keeney Motosports / EVO Industries located in Lebanon, PA. I’m sure that many of you are familiar with the Keeney name, but the EVO Industries label is something that is new to many of us.

MRA: EVO:

Keeney Motosports has been providing motor and suspension services along with general maintenance at their facility and trackside for many years. Only the EVO Industries name is new, you can count on receiving the same top notch service you’ve become accustomed to in the past and for future years to come. We caught up with the guys last month at the shop, and here is what they had to say!

MRA: EVO:

Keeney’s own Jeremy Kready races the EVO prepped machine.

EVO West- Moore Performance, WA EVO North- Kleppen Performance, WI What is your core business at EVO? The majority of our business is motor and suspension mods. For our motor mods we offer a variety of different levels. Four stroke mods include four stroke porting, custom cams and valve spring kits, pistons, crank work, carb mods and all valve seat and valve guide needs. Two stroke mods include two stroke porting, head, crank, and case mods. Ignitions are available for most makes and models, along with ignition programming. Suspension mods include revalving the suspension to suit your needs-- whether you are play riding in the woods or pounding some whoops on a motocross track—we can set up your suspension according to your needs. We also offer all coatings and 90% of all works factory parts. What other types of services do you offer? We offer a full service shop and retail parts counter where you can come browse and check out different products. If we do not stock what you are looking for, we can order it.

EVO:

Keeney / Evo can keep your bike fresh from week to week. EVO:

How long has Keeney Motosports been in business? Keeney Motosports has been in business for seven years. Our techs have been providing performance services to racers for over 20 years. Where are you located and what are your hours of operation? We are located at 32 Evergreen Road in Lebanon, PA, 15 minutes from the Lancaster/Lebanon turnpike exit and 20 minutes from the Route 81 Lebanon exit. Hours of operation are Monday/ Friday 9am-6pm, Tuesday/ Thursday 9am-5pm and Wednesday 9am-7pm. Can you tell us about the change to EVO Industries? We made a switch from the TBT brand logo to the New EVO Industries, same locations, same people with the addition of one new facility. EVO East-Keeney Motosports, PA

Keeney stocks the parts and accessories you need. MRA: EVO:

MRA:

What sets Keeney Motosports / EVO Industries apart from the competition? Keeney Motosports/EVO Industries is a shop that cares about their riders. We want to set you up with the most reliable bike possible. If you have questions, we answer them without giving you attitude. The satisfaction of our customers is number one in our book. What is your average turn around time for performance work?

MRA:

EVO:

MRA:

Generally, scheduled suspension and motor mods are turned around in a week. We know the importance of having your bike ready for the weekend and strive to have it finished in a timely fashion. How about general maintenance? This varies depending on the busyness of the season but a quick phone call to get it scheduled will allow us to give you an estimate of the time frame. Are you a motocross shop only? No, we have done work for riders and racers in many disciplines of the sport including, flat track, harescramble and enduro racers. I understand you offer suspension coatings, can you tell us a little about this We offer all types of suspension coatings. Ti-nitrate, DLC and Kashima coatings offer less stiction and greater strength, which means the forks will slide a lot smoother and be more nick and scratch resistant…plus it looks TRICK! Do you offer services for both motorcycles and ATV’s? Yes, we service both quads and motorcycles. The majority of our business being suspension and motor mods we do offer maintenance programs to fit our customer’s needs Are their any special services or products exclusive to Keeney Motosports / Evo Industries? EVO has a variety of custom mx parts. We offer custom valve seats and valve seat cuts. We also manufacture works suspension parts and carb kits. Custom cam grinds are also available. MRA: EVO:

Our trailer is at a lot of local races throughout the year. We stock many different products that are needed on a race day such as levers, perches, oil, tear-offs, goggles, handlebars, bar pads, grips, kill switches and spark plugs to name a few. We offer trackside suspension adjustment, carb mods, pipe demos and any other support you might be looking for. We also deliver your motorcycles to the track if we are planning to attend the race you are going to. Also, if you are at the track and want to come over to the trailer and hang out, you are more than welcome to do so. What goals have you set for the future of your business? To grow and expand into a new facility and to always remember that this is a sport and we do what we do because we enjoy it. Are there any special events or open houses coming up for EVO? We are helping sponsor the Wyatt Barto Memorial at Sleepy Hollow on Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a Chicken BBQ and rider exhibition to help benefit the Rider Down Organization and the Wyatt Barto family. Any thing else you would like to say? One of the most satisfying parts of our job is to see our bikes up front and on the podium. We strive to get the most performance out of our bikes without sacrificing the reliability of the bike. Thanks for the interview. Our pleasure.

North East Classic Motocross By Jim P Sanderson - www.sandersonphoto.com

2008 MSR/ANSWER RACING Round 2: Old Bridge Township Raceway Park By Jim Sanderson Englishtown, NJ, March 30, 2008 Rider turnout was phenomenal for the second round of the MSR/ANSWER RACINGNortheast Classic Motocross series at the infamous Raceway Park, in Old BridgeTownship, New Jersey. More than 650 riders were slated for battle on the technical and extremely rough and whooped out Raceway Park racecourse. Mother Nature cooperated, providing a beautiful blue sky with only a wisp of clouds and temp’s in the mid forties. Track conditions were excellent early in the program but as usual; the racecourse only got rougher as the program progressed. Suzuki pilot, Jay Weller topped the extremely competitive 250 Pro/Expert class by taking a second in the opening moto and a win in the final moto. Honda rider, Ashlee Woskob, took runnerup by taking the first moto win and fourth in the second. Local Pro/Expert rookie, Dakota Kessler, who is the son of the infamous original, Garden State fast guy and former factory Maico rider, Mickey Kessler, closed out the podium with a fourth in moto one and a second in moto two. Kessler, Michael Stryker and Woskob led the 25-rider pack out of the first turn in the opening 250 Pro/Expert moto. Stryker had the point by the second turn and led the pack up the huge Raceway Park Elevator followed by Woskob, Kessler, Bryan Wallace and Casey Clark. Stryker started lap two with a three-second lead. Woskob and Kessler remained second and third while Clark passed Wallace securing fourth. By the start of lap three the battle for third through fifth was heating up as Weller worked his way through the pack after a less than stellar start, first taking fifth then passing Clark to take fourth in just a half a lap. By lap four, Woskob was right on Stryker’s rear tire and pressuring for the lead. Woskob made the pass in the whooped out back section

AJ Catanzaro (130y), Josh Emmi (61), and Alexander Woskob (125) lead the pack into the first turn in the final 250 B moto.

of the racecourse relegating Stryker to second. Meanwhile, Weller continued his charge to the front, passing Kessler in the back section to secure third, displacing Kessler to fourth. Ryan Gainey was fifth. Woskob had a four second advantage at the start of lap four and increased it to five at the start of lap five. Weller continued his charge and made the pass on Stryker to take second in the back of the course. Stryker was relegated to third. Woskob got the win followed by Weller, Stryker, Kessler and Clark. The start of the final 250 Pro/Expert moto was a repeat of the first as Kessler, Stryker and Woskob led the pack out of the first turn. When the leaders appeared at the infield tabletop after a half lap, the top five had changed considerably. Jacob Morrison had taken the point with Weller, Clark, Kessler and Stryker in tow. Morrison started lap two with a two second lead. Weller reduced

that lead to less than a bike length at the start of lap three and made the pass for the lead in the corner preceding the Raceway Park Elevator. Morrison was relegated to second. Weller pulled away and started lap four with a three second lead. Kessler had closed the gap on Morrison and made the pass for second just after the start of the lap. Morrison was displaced to third. Kessler closed the gap on Weller and made a last lap charge for the lead but couldn’t get it done. Weller took the checkers with a two second advantage. Kessler, Morrison, Woskob and Stryker closed out the top five. Matthew Fisk, Mike Lacerenza, Alexander Woskob, Joey Peditto and Josh Emmi led the pack of 32-riders out of the first turn in the opening 250 B moto. A.J. Catanzaro emerged from the rough back section of the racecourse with the point half a lap in. Woskob, Fisk, Lacerenza and Peditto rounded out the top five. Catanzaro quickly pulled away and started lap two with a four second lead that increased to nine-seconds by the start of lap three. Fisk passed Woskob to secure second, dropping Woskob to third. Emmi moved up to fourth and Peditto was a solid fifth. The top five were all spread out by the end of the third lap. Catanzaro took the checkers with a 10-second lead. Fisk, Woskob, Emmi and Lacerenza closed out the top five. Catanzaro, Emmi and Woskob led the start of the final 250 B moto. Due to the large rider turnout, the promoter cut the final moto’s to just three laps so Catanzaro needed to secure the lead quickly and did just that by the second turn. Lacerenza, Woskob, Fisk and Tyler Golding rounded out the top five. Catanzaro had a five second advantage over Lacerenza by the start of lap two. Fisk passed Woskob taking third. Woskob was relegated to fourth and Damon Rummel was fifth. Catanzaro took checkered flag with a seven second lead. Fisk, Lacerenza, Woskob and Rummel closed out the top five.

Dakota Kessler (49), Michael Stryker (445), Jay Weller (partially hidden) and Ashley Woskob (251) lead the start of the final 250 Pro/Expert moto at round two of the MSR/ANSWER RACING Northeast Classic Series.

Catanzaro (1-1) topped the podium. Fisk (2-2) took second and Woskob (3-4) third.

“The way I saw it” By Jim Mucklin Just when you think it can’t get any better. After a wet Saturday, I roll in Sunday morning to see it stop raining and a track that is gonna be super good, did I mention I love this crew, made to race on. Wait it’s a cold, damp day but it’s packed, both sides are packed there must be a gazillion bikes here. I thought it was going to be a long day; last race was a little after 7pm. First thanks goes to the staff and

crew. To the racing: In the Open A. Mr. Plotts, Kramer and Zimmerman were one two and three. In the other classes every time I turned around there were Joey Peters (35) or Tyler Conner (19) with a hand full of throttle leading a

race. In School Boy - Peters was on a rail, with Tyler Hawk on his new super cool looking ride in 2nd with Kyle Sidle in third. Patrick Sharkey (115) on the big ride for this year comes out with a 6th. College Boy: Ryan Zimmerman (421) followed by Lamey (991) and Bentz (1) round it out. Over in the women, Niki Stewart was way out there and never let up. Junior mini was all Bobby Piazza (27), you heard it here first, if you’re in first and you feel something bump you, you don’t have to look back it’s Piazza move right. Race of the day was over in Super Mini Tyler Conner (19) out front and on fire with Andy Johns (21) right behind him, great race. I got to see some new faces and this is going to be one tight series, congrats to everyone in all classes no matter where you finished. Heard I missed a good one in the 50 (4-6) between Alyssa Bolden (66) and Tucker Hake (4t) for a one, two finish for the day. I got to see some top shelf racing. Thanks Pagoda!

The Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club hosted their opening event of 2008 in late March at their facility in Hanover, PA. The weather was almost perfect for racing with bright blue skies and mild temps. The event was sponsored by K Tool, Blettner Power Sports and Smokes Custom Car Clean.

The day started off with the Senior riders on the gate. Many of the regulars were out and it would be Michael Crocker taking the win in the expert class with John Lumadue grabbing the win in the amateur division. Next up were the 85cc bikes with a close battle up front. Tyler Strevig and Eric Heilman would swap moto wins, with Sam Sheckells right there in the mix. Heilman would get the O/A win. Next up came the 12-13 group with Hanover native Dillon Thomas racing to the win. Thomas would also take the top spot in the Junior Mini division. Some of the best racing of the day came in the College Boy group. Winfield, PA’s Nick Davis would work his way into the lead in both motos leaving some great racing going on behind him for the second thru fourth spots. Shane Wiegel, Curtis Baker and Marty Gutowski would all battle both motos from beginning to end finishing as I have them listed here. Michael Crocker soars to the 40 + A win.

by Dave Resch No matter which local race series you participate in or which track you go to during a normal race day, the issues are consistent: Too many racers - in too many classes - over too long a day - for too little track time. It’s a delicate balance between promoters that need the rider turnout to make a day profitable and the riders wanting to get their money’s worth of track time. For seasoned riders looking to solve this dilemma, the Masters of Motocross Series was designed for you. Tailored to adult riders, the classes start with 25+ and work their way to 60+ in various A, B and C classifications. No matter what your riding level, you will find competitors to match up with. New for 2008 are 250 and 450 Support classes, as well as an Open Youth class. This provides an extra class to ride or if you have family members that don’t quite fit into an age class yet, the opportunity for everyone to ride. The day is run on a ten to eleven moto format with all classes getting between 6 and 8 laps. Having fewer classes to run, the day is manageable for both the riders and promoters. Consequently, the riders get more than enough track time, the promoters have fewer management problems and best of all, everyone is on their way home in time for dinner. Most races are run on a Saturday, giving you the option of relaxing (recovering for us older riders) on Sunday or heading to another track for more Sunday racing.

Today was the second round of the District 6 Ultimate Quads Series held at the Evansville MX Park; with the first round being cancelled to inclement weather. This was an excellent chance for all the racers to check out their competition to see who has been working hard on their program or who has been hibernating during the winter months. Early in the morning, people filed into the park while others roused from their RV’s from the supercross race the night before. It had rained earlier in the week which caused the track to have major puddles or “lakes” as some people described. Once the first few practices ran, most people thought it was going to be a one-lined, wet and muddy day

Dennis Rinehimer (5) leads the 25+ group to victory.

of racing. But as the sun drew higher in the sky, the track really came in. Berms formed nicely, passing was happening everywhere, and traction was at a maximum. Now that practice was done, the first few classes were in staging and the Vet/+25 class were taking the gate. The first turn saw Denny Rinehimer on his Hammer Racing LTR putting the hammer down nailing the holeshot in both motos and going 1-1 for the day. In hot pursuit was #92 “Bruiser” Lawton on his BossOffroadRacing.com Suzuki and Russell Wynegar in third. One of the best battles all day was between the two Tyler’s of Young and Turner in the 90cc str/125cc 4str class. In the first moto, Turner was on the heels of Young all moto long. Turner

was trying to put the moves on the last lap yet Young was able to ride smart, hold his lines and take the checkered. The second moto showed the same intensity, but Turner was able to ride an error-free race and claim the all-important second moto win to get the overall.

Another great battle raged in the 91200cc 2str/300cc 4str between Tyler Dommel and Brett Cusumano. With both of these talented racers hitting the bigger downhill jumps; they were able to pull away on the rest of the field even on the first lap. It was a very exciting race to witness. At the end it was Cusumano coming out on top. The two premiere classes saw different names atop the podium. In Pro-Am was the #338 of Brian Ace Jr. edging out teammates Kale Witmer and Andrew Zimmerman on their East Coast ATV Honda’s. But the “A” class saw the revenge of the ECA team with Tony Lucarelli in first followed closely by Kale Witmer. In third saw another Ace; it was Andrew Ace taking the last spot on the podium.

A long time ago I remember reading a book or article, it might have been Rolf Tibblin or Ake Johnson, and he was talking about braking. He said “you know that feeling you get on the first downhill of a roller coaster? That’s how you should feel braking into every corner.” I assume what he was trying to get across was that you should be braking so hard into every corner that you’re not sure you can make it. I think if I rode like that I’d blow more corners than get ‘em right. The idea is valid though, we should be using every bit of brake pressure just short of locking the wheels to turn the fastest laps. It’s pretty obvious that more money is spent on acceleration than deceleration as evidenced by the number of after-market pipes sold compared to oversize brake rotors. Suspension set up will always be the most important thing in our sport, after all what good is more horsepower or stronger brakes if the bike is bouncing you all over the track. Still a strong braking system is an important part of the equation to winning. Back in the early days of MX (oh god here he goes again) brakes were a joke compared to what we have available to us today. Single leading shoe set ups were better than dragging your feet, but on some bikes I rode not much better. The twin leading shoe was a step in the right direction and supplied a hefty increase in braking performance but why did it take us so long to get Disc brakes when they had been around for so long. When you brake hard you effectively convert all your kinetic energy into heating the brake rotors. Early disc rotors on street bikes were massive heavy things, solid and about 7 mm thick, I think the early Rokon dirt bikes were the same. This was done to minimize the temperature rise under heavy braking as the energy is spread over a greater mass. Big heavy rotors are detrimental in that there is more weight to accelerate and that extra gyro mass

If you look at a modern front brake rotor for a performance application you will notice that the width of the pad track is very narrow, the reason for this is to help prevent coning. When you apply the brakes the outer edge of the rotor heats up faster than the inner portion because its velocity through the pads is higher. The hotter more rapidly expanding outer parts of the rotor tend to pull the cooler sections out towards them permanently stretching the material. As the rotor cools the stretched inner part is too big and the outer part is still contracting so the rotor becomes cone shaped. This was far more of a problem when the rotors were bolted solid to the wheels hubs. Full floating rotors as we have now helped alleviate this problem by allowing the pad track area of the rotor to expand free of the carrier. Today’s front brake pads are long and narrow to match the narrower pad track on the rotors, As pad design moved in this direction we gained more pistons in the caliper, two smaller pistons instead of one large one. Usually the leading piston is smaller than the trailing one to help equalize the wear rate as the trailing pad must overcome gas or dust evolved from the leading portion of the pad. Early pads were a resinous mix of asbestos fibers (now Kevlar) with some metal added to help with heat conductivity, these are referred to as organic pads. These usually don’t work well in wet conditions and can fade if worked hard enough. The fading is caused by the migration of the resin to the surface resulting in glazing. Ceramic brake pads and sintered metal pads can handle higher temperatures without fading but are harder on rotors. Metallic pads can transfer unwanted heat to the caliper pistons so it’s important to have air circulating around the pistons. I mention this because caliper maintenance isn’t something I see a lot of. Usually the area between the caliper and pad around the pistons is packed with dried mud. It’s a good idea to remove the brake pads periodically and clean out the caliper. Installing an oversize front rotor will not give you any more braking power it just requires less pressure at the lever to achieve the same results. This is because the pad track is further from the centre of rotation. Imagine your bike on a stand and the front wheel spinning if you press your thumb against the pad track on the rotor or against the side of the rim which do you think will require less pressure to bring the wheel to a stop? Oversize rotors are one of those things that unless you’ve tried it you don’t know what you’re missing. Till next month, keep the rubber side down

will affect steering response. In the pursuit of performance, rotors were made thinner, but too thin and the sudden temperature spikes could warp and crack them and contribute to brake fade. Lets look at today’s brake systems and see why they are the way they are.

Storm clouds hung ominously over the track all day but provided only enough moisture to keep the racing surface in fantastic condition. Everyone was eager to start the series and the competition was fierce in all divisions to earn the first precious points that will lead to a year end championship. With the action at Tomahawk,

We have based our reputation on having that certain part in stock when you need it. We have a huge off-road following as well as a great sportbike clientele. We run a very large race support program under the Mt. Holly Racing.com banner. Whose decision was it to create a race team to help support the shop? My son and I came up with the idea a few years back. We were looking for some support for ourselves and thought that a team from the dealership would benefit some of our loyal customers as well as us. How long ago was that? This was about 10 years ago. Then in 2001 we came up with the Mt. Holly Racing.com team idea. My son built a website and we used it to promote our sponsors as well as our dealership and race team. We also try to look the part of a team. We supply our riders with matching riding gear and bike graphics. And Scott as you know I like the colors to be BRIGHT! There is no mistaking when you see one of our riders on the track. How many riders are currently on the team? At last count I believe we have 57 motocross riders signed up for the 2008 season. Do you feel that rider support is important for your business? Absolutely! These guys are like 57 extra sales people for the dealership. I rely on them to do their best to refer friends and customers to us

all year long. Whether it is for a new street bike or just a sparkplug What other types of racing does Mt Holly Racing support? We have an off-road team as well made up of about 15 enduro and hare scramble racers. We also have a few Drag racers we support. And even our store owner Taylor Toussaint races Supermoto. Do you see your support stepping up nationally or staying local? It has been a personal goal of mine to one day see this team get to a National level. This summer we are planning to send a few of our A riders to Canada to compete in a few rounds of the Canadian Outdoor National. I hope this will be the first step towards that goal. Who is part of the race team? Well with over 50 riders I can’t fit them all into this interview. A few of our more widely known riders are: Jason Harper, Ryan Gainey, Ronnie Stewart, Bryan Wallace, Pete Devlin, Bob Malkiewicz, Taylor Murphy, Frankie Lettieri, Ryan Patterson, Joey Peditto, Mic Sowa, Bryan Weimer, Eddie Graham, Richie & Ryan Trevelise, Tyler Betsch, Tony & Anthony Maladra, Zach Obert and Brett Lightner. I hate to leave anyone out. For a complete list you can visit our website www.MTHOLLYRACING.com What sponsors help you make it all happen? We have a great group of sponsor helping out the team. NO FEAR, Bridgestone, Motul, Renthal, FMF, Hinson, Work Connection, Dragon, 661, No-Toil, Liquid Performance, MOTOGRAPHX and ASV. Most of them have been aboard with us from the start. We stay loyal to all of those that have been generous enough to help us. And we promote all of their products through the dealership everyday. We also receive some factory help from Suzuki, Kawasaki’s Team Green and KTM. These manufacturers have been very helpful with supporting our team. I am currently working on a few outside the industry sponsor ideas to help finance our pro team for the summer Canadian rounds. If anyone out there is interested in supporting the team with this venture please feel to email me at slewis@mthollyracing.com Any closing words? Thank you Scott for this interview. I hope this will let a few more people know what we are all about.

More N.J. Info By the time this article reaches you the 2008 season will be under way. Although wet, this NJ off season was not white as a lack of snowfall throughout the state meant many riders were pounding out laps on the practice tracks and sand pits of New Jersey getting ready for their shot at stardom. During the 2007 season you got a chance to meet some of New Jersey’s local riders through our NJ Motocross Rider Spotlight Series each month in Motorcycle Racing Action. This year will be slightly different. Our 2008 series will continue to introduce you to some of New Jersey’s famous and infamous riders but it will expand more intoa the NJ motocross scene. Interviews and stories about some of New Jersey’s finest dealers and businesses are planned as well as a look into some big Powersports businesses that call New Jersey home. We are actively seeking out riders from the distant and not too distant past to see what they are up to now. And while we’re at it we even plan on tracking some famous former residents of the state that have moved on and moved out but will always hold Jersey in their heart. It has been said, “You can take the boy outa Jersey but you can’t take Jersey outa the boy.” After each interview or story runs in print in the pages of Motorcycle Racing Action it will be followed up with photo galleries and more on the web in our blog and website. If you have anything New Jersey to add or would like to comment please let me know at scott@ njmotocross.com

If you have attended a race in District 6 in the last several years you can’t help but notice the Mt. Holly Racing Race Team. With matching team gear, sponsors, and team graphics as well as a professional looking pit area, Mt Holly racing is one of the most organized shop sponsored teams in the northeast. We spoke with team manager Steve Lewis about the organization.

Kevin Bailey called the racing action at Lampeter.

Saturday night April 5th, Lancaster County, PA saw its first sanctioned racing event in a long time. Bill Brown and his Mason Dixon Dirt Trackers along with many local sponsors brought AMA flat track racing to the Lampeter fairgrounds. This was a first for this small community tucked away among the rich and fertile farmlands of the Amish country. They have a fair there every year and they host horse and dog shows, but it was a first for motorcycle racing. The event was a huge success as the loyal rac-

into a top notch race track. Mother Nature threatened in the day’s earlier dumping lots of rain into the area, but by race time the track surface was in prime racing condition. 17 classes of racing would compete on this Saturday at the fairgrounds. Young Dustin Otto would take the win in the beginner 0-51 cc shaft division with Scott Powersports Raun Wood claiming the checkers in both the 251-Open A and the Pro Sportsman divisions. The racing action would be over by 9:00pm and an hour later you would have never known that anyone had been there. The race benefited the Lampeter Fire Company and the local community by offering great family entertainment on a Saturday night close to home in the rolling farmlands of south central PA.
