Motorcycle racing action

Hello Race Fans Happy Memorial Day everyone, and can you believe it’s May already? You know the winter of 2010 -11 seemed as though it lasted forever, but here I sit a day after we had an 84 degree day in April, and I think it’s summer already. We certainly don’t want to rush things now, do we? Our racing season is short enough here in the great northeast as it is. As this issue kicks off, we are getting right into the meat of things. Our amateur racing season is in full swing, the AMA Supercross Series is a wrap, and the first national kicks off in late May at Hangtown. Speaking of supercross, how did you all like that season? I’ve been watching pro racing for a lot of years, and this most recent season has got to be some of the most exciting racing I’ve ever seen. You didn’t know who was going down from one week to the next. It was anybody’s game right up to the end. We can only hope that the outdoor season can prove just as exciting. As I mentioned, the season kicks off out west but will find its way east to High Point in early June, then down to Budds Creek for Father’s Day weekend. Stay tuned; I’m sure the rivalries just may spill over for greater bar banging action. Back on the local front, most race series are

well under way, and I believe the pros may be rubbing off on the natives just a bit. We’ve seen some really great racing this season to date; the expert turnouts have been large, with even the amateur gates bigger than I’ve seen in years, all good news for the sport. We hope you all are enjoying our coverage of the local events. We take great pride in bringing you an accurate and good looking publication. Our goal is to make heroes out of as many of you as possible while providing a platform for the sponsors and businesses in our area to reach the best race crowd in the nation, period. Please remember them as often as you can. Also remember, we now offer free classified advertising online as well as links to the best event photographers around. You can like us on Facebook, and please remember to log onto our website in between issues. I’ll ask one last thing before I go. Don’t forget to remember our veterans and those that currently serve our country, not only on Memorial Day but every day of the year. It’s so easy to forget those that protect our freedoms as we go through the motions of our daily activities. Please stop each day, if only for a moment, to thank them and pray for their safe return. Until next time.

Luke Galko (297) leads Christopher Ford (3F) in 85cc racing action.

Welch(s) Win at District 7 Gold Series Opener Round 1: Tomahawk MX Park, Hedgesville, West Virginia, March 20, 2011 – The opening round of AMA District 7’s Gold Series drew over 250 entries to Tomahawk MX Park on a sunny, cool but pleasant first day of spring. Promoter Chad Gochenour and his team had the track perfectly prepared and ran a smooth schedule that completed by midafternoon. Kawasaki jockey Tom Welch swept the 30+ A class, which, with nine riders, was the largest A class. Welch also swept the 35+ A class. Michael Fink finished second overall on his Suzuki in both classes. Meanwhile Thomas C. Welch swept the 50cc (4-6) overall on his Cobra and was uncontested in the 50cc (4-8) class. Christopher Ford charged his KTM to win the first 85cc (12-13) moto, in some of the day’s best racing. Ford fought with Suzuki speedster Luke Galko, and in the second moto they diced around the circuit for several laps. Two turns from the checkers, Ford crashed hard, tumbled to the track and handed the overall to Galko, who went (2-1). Nathan Smith inherited second overall on his Suzuki with a (3-2) day. Ford (1-6) fell to third overall. Fourteen classes had a podium or fewer entries, including the 250 A class, where Daniel Corbin ran away on his Yamaha, and the Open A class, where T. J. Irvin kept his Kawasaki ahead of Honda pilot Mark Mercer. Daniel Corbin also captured the Collegeboy (14-24) class with his perfect day. Irvin (2-2) snared second overall, while Mercer went (4-3) for third. Yamahamounted Joshua Liston nabbed fourth with a 3-4 day. Liston battled with Joshua Corbin, also Yamaha-mounted, in both Open B motos, swapping first and second. Joshua Corbin charged to the front of the first moto and held on to win, then challenged Liston in the second moto. Liston motored away for the overall.

NE Area Qualifier March 26-27, 2011 • By: Jim Bull – MRA Doublin Gap MX Park The last weekend in March brought the fourth of eight opportunities for racers to qualify in the Northeast area of the country for the 2011 Loretta Lynn Amateur National Championship. By the time you’re reading this, there will only be two more chances before the regionals are held in June. The weekend’s event brought a full house to Doublin and along with it fair weather to qualify for the big show come August in Tennessee. 17 Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Chris Borich launches his bike off a tree root racing the C class.

BP Promotions - PA State Harescramble

Tyler Evans pushes his way through a mud hole during the 110 air cooled class.

April 3, 2011 • By: Jamie B. Brown Evansville MX Park Evansville MX Park was the scene for Round # 1 of the D6 PA State Harescramble Series held on April 3rd in Berwick, PA. Track conditions on the day were more than perfect for having a harescramble race. The weather forecast for the day was to be partly cloudy with a slight chance of a shower late in the afternoon, but that did not happen. The temperatures didn’t make it above 50 for the day, with the wind blowing out of the north keeping the temperature down in the mid 40s. With more than 300 racers coming out for this event, riders would have the chance to try their luck and put their riding skills to the test on the new section of the six-mile course that would catch some of them off guard the first couple laps around. This section of the track had not been used before, giving the riders more of a

challenging and an exciting experience. Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Chris Borich even decided to try his luck in the open C class bike division and did pretty well considering he is a quad guy and not a two wheel rider. Borich went on to win the Open C class, with Landon Wolfe coming in a close second. Borich would later jump back on his quad to dominate the course once again. You can check out a portion of the results here or view the full results at www.bppoints.com. Be sure to log on to www. Mainline Series April 3, 2011 • By: John Sherer Sleepy Hollow MX The first weekend in April brought the Mainline Series to Sleepy Hollow for their second race of the season. It also brought heavy rains on Friday, making for another challenging week of track prep. In strolling through the pits early Sunday morning, the riders had agreed that things were a little wet for practice on Saturday, but that had all changed by race day. Track proprietor Jere Swarr and all the groomers worked well into the night to have the track in top shape for Sunday’s racing. Several overnight campers said they heard the tractors working late into the night, and the Sleepy crew had transformed the track into a raceable surface as expressed by most of the riders I spoke with on Sunday. On race day, some of the riders’ concerns switched to the wind, which was a constant 20 mph, sometimes gusting to 35 mph, making the jumps a little tricky. The rider turnout was above average, and spectator row was crowded, even though the weather was not ideal for racing. The spectators were treated to a full afternoon of close and exciting racing in all classes. You can check out the results here, and we’ll see you at the next one. Round #2 MDRA 6 Series April 9-10, 2011 • By: Jim Bull - MRA Pagoda Motorcycle Club It was history in the making, the first time that the MDRA came to the Pagoda Motorcycle Club in Birdsboro, PA, that is. New for 2011, Pagoda has joined up with the MDRA to host their MDRA 6 Series races at their facility. It seems as though it were a good move. The weekend offered a practice day on Saturday, along with the usual free gas cards and classes that the MDRA awards at each round. In addition, Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha contingencies were offered on the day. We saw a good count of riders, with the entries being just over the 500 mark. There was a host of Pagoda’s regular crowd along with a

group of first-time riders from the MDRA. The mix of MDRA riders that made for some great racing, with most classes offering huge gates. The A classes were stacked with some of the best talent in the region. I hate to name anyone because there were so many great racers. Even Pro rider Jason Lawrence made an appearance on Saturday to take in some practice laps before the upcoming AMA National season. Check the results here to see the list. Both the Amateur and Novice gates were packed, and 31 Junior Mini riders took to the track to bang bars. Actually, I believe the mini gates saw some of the best turnouts Pagoda has seen in these divisions in a while. In talking with Pagoda President Randy Kastle, he mentioned that they had their largest 50cc turnout ever and that three of the four 50 classes that ran were making their debut on Pagoda’s main race track. The action was red hot and the day a success. This track was the best that I’ve seen it in years - not that it’s ever bad, but with the rain that preceded the event things could have been ugly. The Pagoda crew worked their magic, then the riders worked theirs. The club added some really cool track changes, and the riders laid it down and did their thing. Multiple lines, great traction and some of the best racing I’ve seen this year yet. Pagoda’s next motocross event will be a Mainline Series race in late May with the MDRA 6 Series lining up again on May 6-7 at Sleepy Hollow. Get all the details at www. mdramxracing.com.

Brian Espinoza wins 50 Oil Injected in the classes at Pagoda’s Main Track debut.

At 2 p.m. 17 AA/Pro riders lined up at the start with Shane Hufford sprinting out to an early lead. Only two laps in Hufford led the field by over a minute. Nick Davis began to reel Hufford in, but after two hours and five laps, Hufford won the event start to finish, holding off Davis by just 10 seconds. Jason Klammer took the final spot on the podium. 2010 ECEA Hare Scramble Champion Jerod Stoner charged his way back to fifth after a setback. The Delaware Enduro Riders put on another great event, making it fun for both the spectators and riders alike. Additional info on DER can be found on their website at www. delawareenduroriders.com. Their next event, the Delaware Enduro, will be held on May 15th. For the complete 2011 ECEA schedule and to see complete results from today, visit www.ecea.org.

MDRA 7 at Happy Ramblers April 16-17, 2011 • By: Jim Bull – MRA

A few racers told me that they had to water prior to practice. They say April Showers Bring May Flowers. Well, let me tell you, we should be sitting in one of the biggest rose gardens you’ve seen yet come May. The rain just keeps on a coming. The good news, however, is that it’s been holding off on race day to cut us a little bit of slack. Happy Ramblers hosted round # 3 of the MDRA 7 Series for their 2011 opener, and rain they did get. The racers started rolling in on Friday evening, but by early Saturday the skies once again opened up, allowing only three practice sessions before the Ramblers crew shut it down to save the track for Sunday’s racing. That’s when things really got ugly. The downpours started, and everyone hunkered down in their motor homes to see what Sunday would bring. Any human being with any intelligence whatsoever would have known that come Sunday a canoe would be more appropriate than a race bike. As I rolled into the track early Sunday morning, practice had just gotten underway. I buried my car in the mud back in the pits; I was wondering how I was really going to get out of there at the end of the day. As I headed toward the track, a few racers told me that they had to water prior to practice, and I’m thinking, yeah, right. Turns out, like the week before at Pagoda after a few inches of rain, that the track surface was literally primo come race time. Matter of fact, those sprinklers went on again at intermission, and the racing continued. Happy kept the track tight prior to the rain, and the water just seemed to rush away from it like it had the plague. So, kudos to the track staff for providing a great day of racing; the surface was in great shape, and the track changes were fun for all. The racers you ask? Yeah, they were there. They waited out the storm, and it shows they are dedicated to the cause. I didn’t check the numbers, but the gates were loaded and the racing intense. Check out the results here and the MDRA point standings online at www.mdramxracing.com. By the way, I was able to jump in my car and drive right out like it had never rained a drop. Happy Ramblers’ next event falls on May 14-15 and is a Happy Ramblers track points event, so be sure to check it out.

NEOC Round #3 April 16-17, 2011 • By: Noel Hartem and Tim Dennis Ormond Farms

The Easter Bunny made an appearance at this NEOC round.

Seven hundred seventy riders came out to weather another nor’easter with us and man what a weekend it was. Saturday started out overcast with a huge band of yellow and red coming straight for us from the southwest. We knew what to expect because of all the damage and destruction reports it was leaving in its wake. The storm held off the majority of its ugliness until the day’s events were complete, but man o man when it cut loose it dumped a river on us. High winds, tornado warnings, downpour for hours, lightning and thunder and flooding. When it was all said and done on Sunday morning before the sun came up, the guys put on their mud gear and headed out for damage control on the course. The report was this: Every arrow was down, fallen trees and busted ribbon, flooded starting area, future quagmire holes laying in wait to snare their traps. No worries because that is just a day’s work for the NEOC course workers. They didn’t panic and only went out in full force to git-r-done before the youth event started. Huge thanks and hats off to all the boys that took the storm by the horns. These guys are like the mail men, not wind or rain, nor sleet or hail will keep them down! A huge thanks to our sponsors that helped us hook up the NEOC riders with great goodies to take home with their awards: Scott USA, Acerbis, HRP Sports, Skorbordz, TD Photo Imaging, Fairway Honda, Riders Choice, Racers Edge, Seaville Motorsports, Hanover Powersports, Town & Country, Spectro Oils, Monkey Butt Powder, Tugger Straps, Twin Air, Water Gap Coffee Company, EVS, Rich Lafferty Riding School, ABS Sign Co. and the Lovely Lois & Mean Gene. On Saturday we had all of the local fire companies come out to promote Fire & Safety Awareness. They had all the trucks shined

The Tikes on Bikes program is a big hit. up and on display, and they even had a mock burning house for the kids to try out the firehoses on. It was a lot of fun and a great success. We thank you all, Heislerville, Leesburg, Port Elizabeth and Cumberland Fire Companies and the OEM Unit, for participating in such an important event as this.

Motorcycle Racing Action

Peace be with you, I am writing this month’s Chaplain’s Corner with great excitement. I was watching the AMA Supercross and witnessed something very awesome. I watched a fantastic race, and when the checkered flag was thrown I was a witness to something amazing on national TV. The first three riders were Trey Canard, Ryan Villopoto, and Ryan Dungey. When they were interviewed they went through the normal process of thanking all the many sponsors - and did they ever have a lot of sponsors - and then they thanked the one who gave them everything, and that was our Lord Jesus Christ. I was never so proud of our sport and those three young men than I was right then. I wanted to call everyone and say, “Did you hear that, did you?” I know my Lord doesn’t need me to call attention to him or boast, but boy, did I ever want to. The real point is this: we are always looking for ways to get to the top, and these three young men just told you the secret. Many are looking to be that next Dungey or Canard, but do we stop and think about how we need to get there? It is hard to reach that level. I was reading last month from this great publication of MRA, and a great man was giving advice on mental training to get the edge and be the complete rider. He hit the nail on the head, and I am going to drive it in. We must be strong if we expect to compete at the next level of racing and in our lives. We must be physically, mentally, but most importantly, spiritually strong to be the complete person and rider.

So listen up you serious motocrosser who wants to compete at the next level of your own racing and life. The spiritual training is very important, and a part of any complete motocrosser or person is very important. We seem to leave it out all the time; it is the most important part, so you must get started right away. The training you need is in the word of God. Yes! The Bible is where we find all our spiritual strength. How we get this strength is by eating. We eat the word the same way we eat food; we take it in. When you eat food for the body that has nutritional value, it gives you strength for the body by letting it absorb into the bloodstream. If you do memorization, it is food for the mind and it absorbs into the mind and makes the mind stronger. Well then, when you read the Bible, you take it in, and it absorbs into the body, and it gives the food for your spiritual body strength. As you become spiritually strong, you will start to become more like your creator, and as you become more like Christ, you will take on characteristics of Christ and become one with Christ. I bet you are still thinking, how does this spiritual training really help me in my racing career to get to the next level like the pros? Philippians 4:13, I can do all things through him who gives me strength. Did you hear that,” I can do all things”; that means there is nothing I cannot do when I believe and the Lord wants it

for me. The Spiritual strength you receive gives you strength to go past the mind and body to the very existence of yourself, and when you use that strength that only comes from God, there is nothing you cannot do in the name of Jesus. When you read the Bible and learn the word and become like Christ and feed the spirit, you will have the complete package and be able to step to the next level of your racing. Many racers have a lot of good training, but they leave out the most important part of their training, and that is the part that is needed the most - your spiritual training. So I leave you with a challenge, and that challenge is to start reading the word and working out your spirit so you can compete at a much higher level (Heaven), and you will see that nothing is impossible in Christ our Lord and Savior. Spiritual Training Hint: Start with the basics and work out your spirit just like you would your body. Do not try to do too much at once; just start a little at a time so you do not get sore (with the truth). Maybe read the Ten Commandments and then go from there, praying and letting Christ be your trainer.
