Well, this is it, the last issue of the year. I’m already starting to go through withdrawal symptoms. I got home the other evening and I said to my wife, “Hey honey,,, lets go cover some snowmobile racing this winter.” She gave me one of those looks, like, well,,,, some of you may know what I mean. No, not the one where she’s silently saying, ‘you’re nuts’, it’s the one where she’s thinking,,, “Now where did I put that credit card??? I sure could use a new snow suit!!!”

Any how, by the time you’re reading this issue, the racing is going to be about all wrapped up for the season. I hope all of you had a great time at all of your local tracks this year, we sure did. Again we thank you all for reading MRA, we thank our subscribers, advertisers, and contributors, we thank the racers, the parents, the Dealerships and the Track Owners, and if there is anyone I missed we thank you also.

Our first issue of the New Year will be early February coming into Motorama, we hope to see you all there. Throughout the off season we welcome your comments and suggestions. You can e-mail or call us with your ideas. We’re also putting together a website which is currently under construction, we hope to have your race photos posted there soon. Ft of Mountain Hare Scramble

The weather was perfect and there was a good crowd on hand for Foot of the Mountains next to last Hare Scramble of the year on Sunday 10/27/02.

It had rained a few days before the event so there were some slick spots on the course, but the crew out on the mountain did a great job of setting up the track.

If you like a combination of tight & twisty and open course riding, then Foot of the Mountain is definitely worth checking out. It’s centrally located and just a few miles off of exit 13 or 14 of the PA Turnpike. Foot of the Mountain is just the right combination of trees, rocks, dirt, and a bunch of fun, take the drive,,, you won’t be sorry.

“Support – Get Some!”

By Andy Fleck & Al Carr Well another race season has come and gone. Hopefully, you had a good summer at the races and accomplished what you set out to do. If you fell short of your goals, now is the time to start planning what you need to do over the winter months to have a better season next year.

Maybe for some of you, you won’t stop racing. Some are lucky enough to venture south to warmer weather for the winter months and keep their riding to some sort of regularity. But for the rest of us, we get to sit around and dodge snowflakes and try to get quality riding in on frozen terra firma.

Let’s face it, if you’re a true moto-head, winter stinks! You’ve got this brand new ride sitting in your garage and all you can do is look at it, and come up with 1001 places to put that cool sticker that’s burning a whole in your favorite sticker hiding place. After you hold it on every square inch of the motorcycle, you don’t even paste it. You’ll probably do that a dozen more times before you have to start Christmas shopping.

The time off should be spent preparing for the upcoming season. Most of you probably already know that. Training as much as you can probably is the most important thing that you can do at this time to build strength in your muscles so you’re stronger for the next season. If you need a little help in this area, maybe you don’t really know what type of lifting is best or really even how to get serious about training. Then Total Two Wheel Training is whom you need to call.

The gentleman who owns that business goes by the name of Bob Shuler. Bob is a seasonal veteran motocrosser, who has been around since rubber band starts were the norm.

Bob specializes in training motocrossers and bicyclist who want to compete seriously and want to do it right. Besides that…he is one heck of a nice guy. Once you’ve got your training regiment started maybe getting a resume together isn’t a bad idea. Free or discounted parts, and service will help your racing endeavors go much smoother. A good resume will get you some much needed assistance, regardless of whether you’re breaking the top twenty at nationals or finishing last at the local track. It’s not so much your finishes as it is the way you promote your sponsors that counts. Don’t get me

wrong…sponsors would love their riders to be winning every moto, but that is just not possible.

The main thing they are looking for is someone who will promote their product/service line in a professional manner. That means…use their product, display their stickers and do anything that will help promote their business. Remember, they are the ones that are investing in YOU. The experienced sponsored riders go to the announcer at the beginning of the race day and give him or her a list with their name, class they ride in, and all of their sponsors, with the sponsors listed in order, biggest most supportive first, least supportive last. If you don’t have a billboard like bike hauler to display their logo, then get creative. One possibility would be to make up a pit board for your sponsors in the pits that would show everybody whose product you are using.

You should also stay in touch with your supporters, (send them a letter, call, e-mail, etc.) not just get your free stuff and never talk to them for the rest of the year. Let them know about your race results, how their products are working, or mention any pros and cons that you have encountered. You might want to even make suggestions to them as to how to better promote their product and at the same time you will be improving your chances of receiving more support.

If you are going to send out resumes, now is the time to do it. This is when everyone is filling their support roster. The sooner the better! Spend some time and make a professional resume. This will convey the message that you indeed warrant some help.

If you send a Polaroid and a letter on notebook paper, chances are it will be the first resume to hit the can. If instead, you send something that looks like you mean business, then they are going to sit up and take notice. Always include sharp pictures of you racing. If you don’t have any, odds are in your favor that Thom Veety at Action Photo’s does.

Another eye catcher that might lend to you getting support is including a picture of yourself without the race gear. They need to be able to put a face the name. Include as many race finishes as you can, as well as all of the years and finishes that you can recall.

Past sponsors, references – professional and personal, and a cover letter stating your abilities and PR appeal will help them to make the decision to assist you in the maintenance of your bike.

If you spend the time and make a strong effort, chances are good that you will get some kind of help. Aim High! Try sending out as many resumes as you can (upwards of 50). You might only get support from one or two, but that is more support than you had before you started. (That’s better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick!?!) If you are one of the lucky ones, you might find your pockets bursting with service agreements, parts and accessories and maybe even Ben Franklins.

Remember…after the service agreements come in the mail, get out to the garage and put that sticker somewhere!

Vintage racing is not something new to me however, holding a vintage event was. The term rubber band start mean anything to you? Well it did to me trying to make one. Being a current motocrosser can be a luxury. These guys have all the worst things to deal with, from the starts to the mechanics of the bikes. This is our history boys and girls and it was great. I have never seen more people with the love of the sport than when they came to my track “the Landing MX”. The conditions could not have been better. The weather was great, the track conditions supreme and the race action was to say the least tough. The tracks for vintage needed some fine tuning but we handled that issue and the rest was pure MX madness.

Some of the bikes we saw would be considered a brick to me but, these guys let me ride some of our history and I had a blast. If you ever get the chance to check out a vintage race, I suggest you do so. These are overgrown children with hearts of gold and bikes of old. I had never imagined that doing an AHRMA Vintage MX would be such a great experience. By David Segal

Sunday September 29th the D6 Harescramble series returned to Pine Grove PA. The weather was perfect and with rain just a few days prior, I was sure dust would not be a problem. The track was holding a lot of water since this was the first race since the summer break, after a short walk around the track a lot of racers were busy with duct tape, guarding intakes and radiators. Pit crews were prepping goggles and gloves for quick pits during the race.

The Pro 2 stroke class was the first to let loose into the muck. After mechanical troubles during the pace lap Chris Borich got his LRD powered 250R fired first and was into the first turn with a clear track ahead.

Rob Hertz, Mike Lucas and Sean Neidlinger all battled hard for second position for most of the first lap. With all of the standing water and mud berms the quads and riders were taking a beating. Dan Ketterer (Powerline

ATV) cut a coolant hose and was forced to the pits on the first lap.

Andy Lagzdins (Dirtfirst) made the trip from Maryland but mechanical problems sent him to the pits just 2 laps into the race. After a 60 second delay the horn sounded for the start of the Pro 4 stroke class. Matt Smiley (not on his usual RollDesign 250R) took the holeshot on his borrowed 400EX, Jon Bowers, Mike Krachun, Tyson Thomas and Dan Destefano all gave chase, but Smiley was out front and charging for the overall. Mike Krachun (ProPartsRacing) was the only one to stay in touch with Smiley throughout the race. The thumpers seemed to be hooking up better on the slick Dutchmen dirt than the 2 strokers. Smiley charged hard to the end and finished less than 60 seconds behind overall winner Chris Borich. Third overall (2nd in 2 stroke) went to Rob Hertz (Powerline ATV/Herrmannracing.com) on his 250R. Mike Krachun motored his way through the 2 strokes to finish 4th overall (2nd in 4 stroke) aboard his ProParts/LRD 400 EX. Mike Lucas powered his Banshee into 5th overall and finished 3rd in the 2 stroke class.

The fastest Vet class racer of the day was Ken Kresge aboard his Knowlton construction backed 250R. Ken had to battle from a midpack start and mudded his goggles on the first lap. After a quick pit stop Kresge was able to charge to the front and easily take the Vet class win.

were out racing in the 4 stroke B class. Shaun Gardner fought through the mud on his Cannondale to finish third. Wild Will Jones former flat track champion ended up 15th for the day. Matt Detwiler also of East Coast ATV fell victim to the slick conditions, after darting outside on a long sweeper to make a daring pass Matt was thrown to the ground by his 400 EX and out of the race.

In the 4 stroke C class John Kenney led most of the race until his vent tube clogged with mud and killed the motor. Johnny quickly diagnosed the problem, but lost the lead and finished 2nd.

The new track layout was a nice change from the normal track. It added a few new technical sections some of which were a surprise for racers. Even the Pro 4 stroke class had a bottle neck or two to deal with which is uncommon at Pine Grove. Weíll be at the Flying Dutchmen three more times this fall, that could mean dust, snow or rain you can never tell!!! Thanks to Bowers Cycle for sponsoring the race.

The Flying Dutchmen

It was another wet race day at the Dutchmen. Sunday October 6th was the seventh and final round of the PA State Harescramble series. The Pennsylvania Harescramble series is a seven race series that is run within the districts twenty four ATV events throughout the year. Although the war for the D6 championship is not over, the battle for the state champ is complete.

The two stroke Pro class was first off the line. With the dead engine start riders stand with there left legs in front of the ATVís and wait for the horn to sound. New Jerseys Sean Neidlinger was out of the hole first, he was able to steer clear of the water and pulled out a sizable lead over the rest of the class. Rob Hertz who led the points battle going into the days event, was in the middle of the pack, but quickly bullied his way into second place. Mike Lucas, Wes Stone and Todd Rothermel all battled for the third spot throughout the first lap. Sunbury PAís Chris Borich had some trouble getting his machine fired at the start and found himself in an unusual position, having to battle through the pack. Before the end of lap one, Hertz had made his way past Neidlinger for the lead, and Borich was now in 3rd after making short work of the rest of the class. Neidlingers machine soon took on some water while racing with Borich and started to lose power on the long straight a ways. Borich moved past Hertz for the lead, the way he came through the pack after the start it looked as though he would simply throttle away with the win. Going into the event Hertz led Borich for the championship by a slim margin. It appeared that Hertz had this in mind as he followed Borich closely for 2 laps. Before the race, everyone was notified that the race would be an hour and a half, which is around 3 laps longer than usual. Knowing that fuel stops would be a factor in track position, Hertz stayed as close to Borich as possible waiting to see when he would pit. These machines can easily drink 4 to 5 gallons of race fuel in an hour especially when you throw in 6th gear straights and long slick, sweeping turns! As the pack emerged from the motocross section we noticed Hertz was once again out front leading but Borich was not close behind, the report we heard was that Chris ran out of gas out of site of his pit crew. This put Chris back in the pack again as Lucas, Neidlinger, Stone and Rothermel all got by.

Meanwhile the 4 stroke Pros were flying. The track conditions were perfect for the big thumpers. Mike Krachun was out front the entire day needing only to finish the race in order to wrap up the PA Championship for that class. Even though Mike was out front and leading all eyes were on Cannondales Tyson Thomas as he blazed through the pack from dead last. It looked certain that Tyson had the momentum to carry him past Krachun as the laps decreased. At the one hour mark almost at the same time that Borich ran out of gas, Hertz stopped for a quick “gas and go” and the top two 4 strokes, Krachun and Thomas motored past for the overall lead.

Amazingly Borich managed to work his way back into 2nd place and with 20 minutes to go the hammer was down and he had his sights on Hertz for the win. With a 25 second lead and 2 laps to go Hertz made Service ATV’s another pit stop, unfortunately this stop was not fuel related. Rob had overheated his rear brake, boiling the fluid and destroying the caliper. Nothing could be done to repair the rear brake, he would have to muscle the quad around for two more laps with only front brakes. This allowed Borich to get within 5 seconds of Hertz with only a few turns left, Borich nearly high sided around a fast right hand sweeper, causing his quad to dart off the track and into a drainage ditch, he stayed on the gas however and powered through but it was just enough of a delay to let Hertz go for the win. Krachun and Thomas stayed nose to tail and for the last three laps, their pace allowed them to open up a lead on the two stroke class and were forced to race an extra lap. When Krachun headed out of the woods and onto the switchbacks Thomas was no where to be found, he had run out of gas. Since only these two riders made the time cut off for the extra lap, Thomas still eared second place in the class and overall. With Krachun taking the win and the PA State Championship in the four stoke Pro class. The two stroke Pro class was tight going into the day but the win

by Rob Hertz secured his title as a PA State Champion in the two stroke Pro class.

In the Vet class Ken Tichner fought threw a large number of riders in the class to take the lead after four laps. He then fell back after stopping for fuel, goggles and gloves but was able to come back and take the win.

I wasnít able to get report of the B or C classes for this event. It does appear that several riders have reached the points maximum and need to move up next year. Mark Stoops and Steven Tressler should be moving from the two stroke B class to the A/Pro class for next year as well as four stroke B class racer Mike Johnson who has dominated this class so far.

The new C class has had some exciting battles through out the year and if the points maximum rule applies John Shull and Matt Highlands should be moving to the B class for next year. There are still five events left this year, but the season is coming to a close and racers are already making plans for next year. The A/Pro classes are continuing to grow and new sponsors for the series are inviting lots of new racers to all classes. Remember even though we are all competitors we share a common interest and goal lets work together to help our sport and our series grow. Over the past 10 years Iíve traveled to several local series to race and none that Iíve found have the competition or the camaraderie that Iíve found here in District 6.
