MX2/OPEN: Young Ryan Villopoto wow’ed the world at this years MXofN.
MX1/MX2:
Ryan Villopoto didn’t seem to care that the 250cc and 450cc bikes were combined, he got the holeshot and led this moto wire to wire. The real story of this moto was that
United States team rider Ryan Villopoto got yet another holeshot aboard his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki and pulled away from the field, while his Team USA teammate Timmy Ferry suffered from a horrible start and was forced to work his way up from the back. Tim Ferry was all the way back in 32nd There was a large first turn pileup and Joaquim Rodrigues was down for quite a while. The race was nearly red flagged, but the officials decided not to do so when they were able to direct the riders around Rodrigues.
Team USA dominates the world at the 2007 MX of Nations. crowd screaming, and the laps running down, Ferry worked his way up and got around Pourcel, and then set his sights on MX1 World Champion Steve Ramon.
Carmichael taking the race win with Tim Ferry second. With those finishes, Team USA easily took the overall team win, and the MX1, MX2, and Open class overall championships.
When the checkered flag flew, it was Ricky

Tim Ferry filled the injured James Stewarts shoes quite well.
The weekend motto.
Ricky Carmichael fell at the start and restarted in dead last. Impressive is hardly the correct word to describe RC’s charge through the pack. Perfect track conditions with a surplus of ruts and bumps were definitely to Carmichael’s liking. Ricky Carmichael set about working his way through the pack and the crowd cheered wildly when RC passed current MX1 World Champion Steve Ramon for fifth place at the halfway mark. Australia’s Chad Reed held on for second as Ricky Carmichael almost caught him in the final stages of the moto. The 1-3 finish for Team USA gave the team the overall lead heading into the next two races. Ryan Villopoto set
OVERALL TEAM RESULTS: 1. Team USA 2. Team France 3. Team Belgium 4. Team Italy 5. Team Great Britain 6. Team Spain 7. Team Japan 8. Team Switzerland 9. Team Germany 10. Team Canada Ricky Carmichael ends his motocross career on top of the world. Ferry continued to charge the whole moto and by the end finished fourth, the second place Open class rider.
MX2/OPEN RESULTS:
1. Ryan Villopoto MX2/Team USA 2. Ken De Dycker Open/Team Belgium 3. Tommy Searle MX2/Team Great Britain 4. Timmy Ferry Open/Team USA 5. Pierre A. Renet Open/Team France
MX1/OPEN: Hopefully, only in America.
After such a horrible MX1/MX2 first moto start, Ricky Carmichael holeshot this moto and quickly opened up a lead over second place Team Belgium’s Steve Ramon. Team France’s Sebastien Pourcel started in third with Tim Ferry fourth. With the 60,000 plus
Budds Creek hosted the 2007 Red Bull MX of Nations in true American style.

Can you believe it’s November already? The racing season will be all wrapped up by the time most of you are reading this column. It always has to come to an end and that can be a good thing no matter how you look at it. Some will be celebrating their accomplishments of this year while yet others have a new season and a new opportunity to do better right around the corner. It’s a win, win situation for all. I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving this month. Please take a moment if you can to be thankful for all that you have. No matter what your station in life we can all find something good that we have compared to what some others don’t. Let’s celebrate what we do have, not what we don’t. In last months column I told you about our
new “Free Distribution” plan for the upcoming season. Since then we have had many requests from readers to still be able to get their MRA in the mail. We still intend to offer MRA as a free publication and you will be able to find it at race tracks and dealer advertiser locations. However, due to demand we will be offering a paid home delivery subscription to those that desire that. You can either clip the form here in this issue of MRA or you can subscribe online at: www.mcracingaction. com. The cost is only $15.00 a year for you to reserve your copy each month. I’d like to thank everyone for another successful season. We appreciate your reading of, contributing to and advertising in our pages. As each year passes we make more and more friends and enjoy watching you, the racers move thru the ranks. We have one more issue after this one in 2007. The racing will be over but there are lots of year end results and lots of super deals that our advertisers will be offering for the holiday season. So make sure you tune into that one as well. And please remember, it is the gift giving season and MRA Photos are great for gifts, resumes, sponsors and awards. Check out our website to view thousands of pictures from the last 4 racing seasons. I’m sure there is something there that can suit everyone’s needs. Again thanks for your support and we’ll see you at the track. Until next time - Jim Bull, MRA.

MRA November 2007 •
Sleepy Hollow Motocross Park and Adam Russler, a local Motorcycle Industry Rep for Sullivans and Troy Lee Designs, hosted a dealer ride day in early October on Sleepy’s main race track. Over 80 riders from the area came out and participated in an open track day as a way for the companies that Russler represents to say, “Thank You for Your Business.” Sleepy Hollow’s general manager, Eric Swarr and his crew had the track in perfect condition and on top of that the weather was just awesome for a laid back day at the track. Riders were broken into groups by their skill level and were allowed 20 minute sessions on the track.
A slow bike contest was held that was won by the voice of Sleepy Hollow, Todd Weindel and Russler provided a hot lunch for all in attendance. Both companies that Russler represents played a big part in putting on the day as well as providing suppor t and contingencies thru out the 2007 season at the track. Sullivans supplied the new HJC helmets that all Sleepy Hollow Track Champions received this year and Troy Lee Designs helped sponsor a gear giveaway thru some of the local Suzuki Dealers over Labor Day weekend. All in attendance had a great time with lots of riding opportunities. If you see Adam at the track, be sure to ask him about the great products that his companies offer and the next time your at the dealer you do business with, ask him if he carries the Sullivans and Troy Lee lines of apparel and protective gear. Adam asked that we thank all of his dealers for their patronage and the folks from Sleepy Hollow for opening up their facility.

This month we finally made it back to a harescramble race so I found it only natural to find a harescramble hotshot for this issue of MRA. I traveled to DMX for the final round of the PA State Harescramble Series in early October and one of my goals was to leave with a hotshot. Well, my job would be easy on that day as I was only there for a few minutes when I came across the Brad Roser family. Brad is a racer from way back and a few years ago he asked his daughter Tabatha if she ever thought about racing? Her immediate answer was yes so it wasn’t too long before they were off to the track for her first race. I asked Tabatha if she remembered much about it and she said, no. It was three years ago in the 110 Air Cooled class and about all she can remember is that she didn’t finish last and
that she had terrible butterflies when she went to the starting line. Fast forward to today and we find Tabatha fourth in points in the PA State Series in the 150 Four Stroke division and she is solidly sitting in first place in the EL Womens division in the ECEA Harescramble Series. In mid October at Ormond Farms Tabatha led 18 other Women to the checkered flag I knew as soon as I saw her that she would be my new hotshot. I remember watching her even last year racing in the same division, I think she was on an XR100 then and she had her share of struggles. In 2007 the Bange family helped her out with her current ride and the rest is just about history. Tabatha hit the track this season and within a few races she had her Yamaha out in front of the pack. She told me her dad keeps her motivated to race and that she still gets butterflies when she goes to the line. I would like to thank Tabatha and her family for their time with the interview and wish them all the best of luck in their future endeavors. There’s only one issue left this season, the only question is, who will be the next MRA Kenda Tire Hotshot? Jim Bull MRA

PAGODA MOTORCYCLE CLUB September 23, 2007 By Jim Bull
Event Class Winners Pagoda club members - on the job.
Stylin’ for MRA while waiting for their gate. Junior Mini holeshot - #775 gets the win! The Pagoda Motorcycle Club hosted round # 15 of the D6 Ultimate MX Series in late September at their grounds in Birdsboro, PA. The day’s event saw double D6 points awarded as well as being Pagoda’s 8th Annual Peiffer mini track appreciation day. The event was co – sponsored by Montgomeryville Cycle Center and Motographx. On the night prior Pagoda ran a pitbike race and offered entertainment in their clubhouse. Even though Sunday’s event was run against the 2007 MX of Nations at Budds Creek, the attendance was extraordinary. First up were the 125 and 25 + A divisions. New Jerseys Dakota Kessler would sweep the 125 division with D6 veteran Ty Wallace going 2-1 for the 25+ O/A.
It was Pagoda’s
The 125 B class was up next and has always been one to watch, racers are preparing themselves for the move to the expert ranks and in some cases these guys are already as fast as some of the A guys. Pagoda club member Justin Frederick has a commanding lead in the Ultimate Series points but today’s race was as close as it can get. Moto number one saw Nicholas McPhee take the win followed by Jason Smith then Frederick in third. Nicholas Finelli who had a DNF in moto one would take the checkers the second time around passing Frederick right before finish line followed by Mcphee in third. McPhee’s 1-3 would be good enough for 1st overall followed by Frederick then Shawn Knapp in third with consistent 4-5 finishes.
While all this was going on, the kids were having fun down on the mini track racing past the pumpkins and celebrating their right to be mini racers. Pagoda caters to this beginners group and always offers them good awards and lots of track time for their efforts. Check out some of the winners here in today’s results. By the time you are reading this, Pagoda’s schedule will be wrapped up for the year but it sounds like there are big things happening on the horizon. Stay tuned to their website and the pages of MRA for breaking news and their 2008 schedules. As always, please enjoy today’s event images at www.mcracingaction.com.

Wheel Bearings Most of us don’t think about our wheel bearings until it’s too late. With just a little bit of preventative maintenance, your bearings will last a long time. Just about all of today’s bikes have sealed bearings. What makes a bearing a “sealed” bearing is the plastic ring installed on the bearing enclosing the balls, not the separate seal that is installed next to the bearing. This plastic strip is there to help keep dirt and water out of your bearings. This is a good thing when the bike is new. But as time goes on, the minimal amount of grease that’s been applied from the factory disappears. It only takes a few minutes to repack the bearings. I try to do this every time I change tires. Use a large screwdriver or similar pry tool to remove the seal. Then use a small pick (such as a dental pick) to carefully remove the plastic bearing strip. You can now pack the bearings with waterproof grease, and then re-install the plastic ring simply by pushing it in with your fingers. Clean the seal and reinstall it, usually by pushing it in place with your fingers also. If you’re an ATV guy, your rear wheel bearings
aren’t quite as easy. You normally have to remove your axle to do this task. As long as you’re going this far, you might want to consider installing a grease fitting in the bearing carrier. You can buy a grease fitting at any automotive store. Drill and tap a hole in the carrier, then install the grease fitting. Depending on the configuration of your swingarm, you’ll want to install the grease fitting where it will be accessible. You may have to drill a hole in your swingarm large enough for the tip of the grease gun to reach the fitting. Make sure you permanently remove the plastic seals from the inner side the wheel bearings so the grease can get into the bearings. Most of the aftermarket bearing carriers have a grease fitting installed. Many of them have the fitting on the outside edge where it’s easily accessible. If your bearings were bad and the carrier was destroyed, I’d suggest an aftermarket dual row carrier. The bearings have two rows of balls, thus the term “dual row”.
race and bearings will probably fall out. However, the outer race is another story. If you’re lucky, a square edged punch will work. You need to work your way around the race with a series of small taps. If you try to hit one side too hard you will just cock the race and possibly crack the hub or housing. A slight amount of heat with a propane torch sometimes helps loosen things. If this doesn’t work, you may have to cut the race with a dremel tool. I’ve seen a cutting torch used, but there is a risk of damaging your hub or housing. When installing your new bearings, it’s a good idea to remove the plastic strips and make sure they’re packed with grease. Manufacturers don’t install an excess amount of grease simply because they don’t want a mess in the packaging.

were in attendance. In the end it would be D5’s Darryn Durham with the win followed by Chad Wages then Damien Plotts who just recently got back on the bike from an earlier injury. The mini classes were loaded with talent and as you can see from this months cover photo the action was tight. There is a whole crop of these young fast guys that will be moving up in the next year or so and my bet is, that it’s gonna get really good. Today’s racing also saw Rob “greenie” Harris back in action after a long layoff from a head injury (non race related), and local favorite Broc Schmelyun seems to be getting back to form after missing a good part of the season due to a knee injury. Doublin’s next event will be in early November featuring a practice day on Saturday 11/3 followed by a race on Sunday 11/4 that offers

Doublin Gap was the host for the close to 350 riders that came out to participate on this day. Today’s action kicked off with the highly competitive 125 C division. This is where mini racers cut their teeth as they move onto the bigger bikes. Today’s race saw a smaller than usual turnout for this class where some days
there can be close to 100 competitors in this division. Many times the track can be littered with racers right after the gate drops as they attempt to negotiate the first turn. Some of the heavy hitters were in attendance given the light turnout today in this class. Mic Sowa would sweep the division followed by Dakota Yohe in second with Donald Hyre finishing in third. The same held true for the next division, the 125 A group. Even though there were only 13 riders on the gate, some of the areas fastest racers

Poe and Baer Share Wins at Shippensburg ST Finale
Shawn Baer and Mike Poe traded wins at Shippensburg Speedway bringing a close to their short track season on a very warm first day of Autumn. Baer topped the Open A on his first ride on his brother’s Don’s Kawasaki sponsored Kawasaki, while Poe put his Mike Bell Racing Honda in front of essentially the same riders for the Open Sportsman final. While this track is difficult to pass on, Baer did some passing for his win. Cory Strickler took the Open A lead from Joey Parks, Baer, Chris Klinefelter and Poe. Baer took second on the third lap and used the outside of the groove to get by Strickler coming off four on the sixth lap. Other positions stayed the same throughout the final. In the Open Sportsman, Poe was first out of two with Klinefelter, Jordan Harris, Brett Pugh and John Long behind. Strickler and Baer had bad heat results and were mired in the back and trying to get to the front. About halfway, Baer collided with Jesse Long, riding his former machine, bringing out the red. Off the single file restart, Poe held the lead, although Klinefelter tried several times to get under him off the turns. The order stayed basically the same as before the red. Tyler Stacey and Colton Smith both took a pair of wins; Stacey in the 150 Air Cooled and 125, while Smith again took the 65 and 85 (7-11) classes. Stacey’s wins on his Kriebel Security/Miller’s Cycle Works sponsored Suzuki’s were follow the leader affairs, with Jimmy Carr, Charlie Houck and Cody Gray following him in the 125 and Jeremiah Snow and Rebecca Zafia stayed close in the 150 Air Cooled. The 65 had the most action of the two, although it was from third on back. Smith took the lead from Tristan Avery, while Dylan Almony, Ken Kolsovsky, Cameron Smith and Kyle McGrane fought for third. On the fifth lap, McGrane went to the outside and took over third, and on the following lap Smith and Kolsovsky went around Almony battling for fourth. In the 85, Smith led a tightly grouped Snow and

NJ Rider Spotlight By Scott Lukaitis
Bobby Jimenez Tell us a little about yourself. Well to start my name is Bobby Jimenez, I’m 18 years young. I’m a pretty simple guy from New Jersey. Motocross is a huge part of my life. I also love to go fishing. I ride as much as possible and train as hard as I can. Right now I’m living in Florida so I can ride and train all winter. You and your Dad have been a fixture at the races in the Northeast for a number of years. Tell us about your racing career so far. So far my racing career has been pretty good. It’s had its good days along with its bad. My goal all through my childhood was to be a professional motocross rider. At the age of 17 I accomplished my goal. Last fall you suffered some serious injuries after being landed on. Tell us about that. Yeah that was a tough one! I’ve had some injuries before but this one was by far the worst. I was doing a little demo ride with a couple other local guys and one of the people out there jumped a double that I rolled and he landed on me. I got flown out of the track. I spent about a week in trauma. And a couple of those days I was in a coma. I had severe swelling on my brain and I broke my jaw. I had my mouth wired shut for about 6 weeks. It was horrible .I don’t remember the crash or about a month after the crash, but I do know that there was a TON of support coming from everyone. But its all in the past now. You spent part of this summer in Canada racing the Canadian National series. Tell us about that experience. Yeah it was a pretty cool experience. I had a ton of fun. The tracks were a lot of fun, the people were super cool for the most part, the competition was tough. The hardest thing was at round one in Quebec EVERYTHING was French. Even the announcer was announcing the races in French. haha. Round two went the best. It started ALL wrong I brought one of my friends along for the ride. Andrew Flood, he probably has the worst luck I have ever seen. Well he brought it with him. The weekend started out with us locking the trailer keys in the trailer at the border. When we got to the track we realized what happened, then we had to break in our own trailer. After we got the key situation situated Flood and I went driving looking for these cliffs to jump off into a lake that the kids up there were telling us about. Well the street signs were in French...And we got lost. We eventually made it back. Then practice went ok Saturday I felt a little bit off pace but I was able
to fix that for Sunday. I qualified in both mx1 and mx2 I was pretty stoked I finished 19-20-for 23rd overall in mx2 and 25-26 for I think 27th overall in mx1.I crashed on the start in moto 2 of the mx1 class. The last round was a disaster! The track was really cool, kinda sandy with some hard packed sections. In practice Sunday morning I went down on one of the fastest sections of the track, it was a long sweeping right hander. My front wheel washed out. I hurt my shoulder really bad. I rode my qualifier in a lot of pain but my lap times weren’t good enough so I had to go to the LCQ. After that there was a HUGE misunderstanding or something because I was under the impression that I didn’t qualify so I headed home. But the week after the race a friend of mine brought it to my attention that I had two DNF’s on the results page. So I guess I did qualify. But I ended up something like 82nd in points in the nation and 43rd on the east coast in mx2.So I was stoked on that. What was it like spending all of that time in a pickup truck driving to Canada with your Dad. It wasn’t too bad for me .The first time Dad was an animal, drove straight through, only time he stopped was for gas. I on the other hand slept straight through that one. Sorry Dad. The second round is when Andrew came with me, they split the driving that time and again I slept a good portion of it. The last round was different. Pops was tired so I put a couple hours in behind the wheel and let him sleep. In your first season as a pro you even scored a couple of points. How did that make you feel. That was an unbelievable feeling. I ended up 43rd in the east coast points and 82nd in the national points. It was definitely a huge confidence builder. As we conduct this interview you are actually living in Florida getting ready for next season. Tell us about your program for this winter. Everyday I either go for a pretty long mountain bike ride usually somewhere around 20 miles or I go running. I do a lot of sprints and also some core exercises, and I try to throw some soccer in with my workouts sometimes. I work Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, I ride Tuesdays and Thursdays, and also on weekends. I’m planning on doing a couple races down here as well. Who is helping you out while living down there? I’m living with some pretty good friends, The Garcia Family. They are helping me out a ton with a place to live and they even feed me! I can’t thank them enough. My Dad is also helping me out tremendously. What are your plans for next season? I plan to go back up to Canada and Qualify for every east coast round and place a lot higher in the points. My Dad and I were also talking about getting my Pro card for the states as well. So if I do that I will try to run a couple of nationals that are closer to home. Who would you like to thank for helping you out? Well first off I would like to thank my Dad. He has been behind me 100% since day one and I can’t thank him enough. If it wasn’t for him racing motocross wouldn’t even be an option for me. I would also like to thank Freehold Honda, Dragon, Troy Lee Designs, Decal Works and BelRay, And a special thanks to Scott Lukaitis for hooking me up with all the right people that he hooks me up with. And everyone else who has helped me through the years.

Pro racer Jason Dunkelberger comes back to Sleepy to win Unlimited A On Sunday October 7th Sleepy Hollow opened up their main track for a quad only race. It was deja vu for many as racers returned to a course that they had competed on in years past. Two years ago the staff at Sleepy designed a track for the ATV racers of the area to compete on separately from motorcycle racers. Both ATV and motorcycle racers have different needs on a track leading to the decision to build the separate course. Sleepy’s regular schedule of events has passed for 2007 so they thought they would invite the quads out and have them ride on the original “big track”. Many racers came out to partake in the event that was partially sponsored by Breezewood Proving Grounds and Girlyz

Every year I look forward to participating in the Vet and Vintage race at Englishtown. For one event a year, it feels like a private party for older guys (or gals) and our older or in some cases, not so older toys. I most enjoy walking around the pits in the morning and stepping back in time. There are Maico’s, Hodaka’s, Elsinore’s, Suzuki PE’s and more. One can’t help but appreciate the simplistic designs of these machines that were once considered “state of the art”. These bikes are in great shape, kudos to their owners for the time and money they put in to restoring these treasures of the past. After my tour down memory lane, I turn my attention to the track. And that’s when, in my mind, two worlds collide. How are these seemingly prehistoric bikes going to manage this modern track? The answer is “barely”. It was clear that not only have the bikes evolved, but every aspect of our sport evolved in order to maintain equal progression. Each piece has a link directly or indirectly to another aspect of the sport that ultimately got us to where we are today. Here are some of my own general observations. The Dirt Bike Dirt Bike evolution had plenty of successful enhancements as well as some not so successful enhancements. Both of which provided plenty to debate about between riders upon their initial introduction. These changes include: the change from air cooled to water cooled engines, radiators mounted behind vented number plates, Yamaha’s Brake Activated Suspension System (BASS), shocks that used linkage systems vs. direct swing arm mounting, drum brakes/disk brakes, standard forks as opposed to inverted forks, metal frames or aluminum frames and of course, the transformation of the 2-Stroke to 4-Stroke engines. Just as in nature, over the years the ideas that did not work fell off and the successful ideas remain with what we have today. And even still, manufacturers are continually attempting new ideas to improve the bike and its performance. Riding Gear Riding gear has also changed quite a bit over the years and continues to do so today. In earlier times, the gear was purely functional with limited
features. Goggles did not have Tear-Offs or Roll-Offs, helmets were heavy and non-vented. There were few choices for chest protectors and they were not so comfortable. Boots were constructed of leather and metal and the color and design choices in apparel were slim. Today we see a much different version. Chest protectors are sectional, light and flexible, helmets are lighter, stronger and well vented, boots are lighter and offer more features and better comfort and the apparel is quite diverse in choice, color and design.
The Tracks The tracks, in my opinion have only changed to match the progression of the bikes running on them. They are now much faster and provide bigger and longer jumps. A great example of this is to watch the vintage bikes ride the Englishtown track. They do not even come close to completing the course as it is intended. After putting this together, I begin to wonder where the sport is going and if this progression will ever stop. I also wonder how it will change us as competitors. In earlier years, the hot item to have for personal protection was the knee brace. It was considered a worthy investment especially considering that the knees took on 50% of the suspension responsibility on the older model bikes. There were fewer tracks to travel to and off road motorcycling was not widely recognized by the general public. Today, the hot item is the neck brace or neck protectors. Faster and better bikes, accompanied by a faster track deserve consideration of this new investment. There are more tracks to visit, more variations of off road competition are available and the sport is definitely more recognized. What about 20 years from now? How will the bikes change in the future? What variations of the sport will evolve due to advances in technology? What protective equipment will we be using that meets the demands of the sport as it continues to evolve or not? These are a few things I wonder about. Tell me your thoughts on the subject as well. If you would like to add comments to this topic, here is what you can do. 1. Send an email to dirt-talk@hotmail.com or Click on the Dirt-Talk feedback link on the MRA homepage. 2. Put the title of the article in the subject line. 3. Indicate if you want your name (class and riding number if desired) credited or if you want to remain anonymous, that’s cool too. 4. Don’t wait. If you’d like your comment included in my next article send me something right quick.
Nutrition & Fitness Thru Jay’s Eyes
Preparing for cold weather If you are an avid athlete, then you know that warming up before exercising is critical. This simple technique helps your muscles become loose so you will have more endurance, a smaller chance of injury or strain and the next day you won’t be as sore. This technique is even more important when it is cold out, so remember to start out slow. Simple stretching is the best way to begin warming up. Stretches should be held for about fifteen seconds while holding in a deep breath. Once you have stretched it is a good idea to take a five minute jog or get on the bike and take about five slow laps to check out the track. The aim of this is to get your heart rate slowly elevated and ready for action. As opposed to just going out right away, giving it our all while going fast and then quickly tiring yourself out. Always remember to warm up slowly and get used to new conditions gradually to avoid possible injury and maximize your fall fun! The second most important part of riding in cold weather is to let your bike warm-up properly. The engine is not the only part of your bike that needs to warm-up. Take into consideration the fact that air pressure and oil viscosity both change with temperature. Make sure you take at least one easy lap before hitting any big jumps if the temp is below 45_F. These quick parade laps give your tires and suspension time to warm-up and adjust to the temperature changes within. Doing this is an important safety precaution since most matter (especially metals) becomes brittle at cold temperatures. This also gives you a lap to check out the track conditions; because of frequent rains during the fall season you never know when erosion will wash out your favorite berm or put rain ruts through a straight away before a big double. Fallen leaves are another hazard to be aware of because they can be s slick as
ice when in a thin layer over a motocross track. Yes that means that you have to rake the leaves off the track too when it comes to this time of year. Fall can be one of the best times of year to get out and ride as well. The cooler temperatures and yet-to-be-frozen soil make fall an ideal time to ride; as long as it not to wet. So remember when going out on these upcoming cool days that warm-up is not just for your bike.

@ The 11th and final round of the 2007 MDRA Race Series was held at Jeff Cernics Pleasure Valley Raceway in late October. You never know what to expect this time of year in the mountains of western Pennsylvania but I tell you, this one was a real treat. Just over 450 racers were treated to a beautiful fall day with temps in the low 70’s with the fall foliage in full bloom. This was the first trip for the MDRA Series to this venue and hopefully won’t be the last. The track offers a lot of natural terrain changes with obstacles for all skill levels and things were run smoothly and professionally. Many class championships would come down to today’s race and the MDRA faithful were here to make it happen. Add in the local contingent and the days racing ended up being very exciting. In a few classes the MDRA champs ended up finishing second to the D-5 riders but were still able to wrap up their titles. Then again in others, we showed them the way around their track. It goes to show that new facilities and new competition can always be a good thing. Next year promises to be even better and early indications show a return to Pleasure Valley. There’s even talk about a year end shootout involving racers from several series around the area that would define a true east coast champion in all divisions. Imagine the contingencies and prizes that this could bring in, let alone the bragging rights and sponsor possibilities in adding that title to your resume. Stay tuned to MRA for all of the upcoming details. Archer and Piazza go home the champs with some awesome racing going on behind them the whole way back to about the 10th positions. Other great battles came in the expert divisions between Damien Plotts, Derrick Wile and Barry Carsten. Wile and Plotts would swap wins and

PA State Harescramble Series Dutchmen MX Park - October 7, 2007 By Jim Bull
info on the 2008 series. It looks like Polaris will once again be the official ATV of the series and we will participate in two AMA Harescramble Nationals, a GNCC and a East Coast Youth National race. Details are just starting to unfold but it looks like it’s going to be better than ever. Also, be sure to check out images from today’s event at: www. mcracingaction.com. Open A Quad 1. S a m a n t h a Vanbuskirk. Taylor Pecika (9) wins the triple crown on his way to the 150cc Four Stroke championship.
Another great ride at DMX. The final round of the 2007 BP Promotions PA State Harescramble Series found itself at the Dutchmen MX Park on a beautiful fall day in early October. The turnout was generous as usual for a state race with close to 300 riders attending. The mini quads kicked off the event which included the usual woods and parking lot sections along with the quad mx track plus on this day DMX integrated their main race track into the course. Ryan Brinker from New Tripoli, PA would win the overall with Kara Clark from Gap, PA winning the 50 stock class. Next up were the youth motorcycles with today’s race bringing a showdown between local motocrosser Daryn Thompson and harescramble fast guy, Nick Davis. Davis had the lead on the first lap coming back onto the main mx course when Thompson sailed by on the back rhythm
section. Davis stuck close and when they got to the big triple in the middle of the track Thompson went airborne while Davis only took on the double. There was enough of an edge here that Thompson would cruise on to the win in his first harescramble race ever. Davis was a close second with another mx racer, Stan Bolen right behind in third. Another close battle in the youth divisions came in the 85cc (12-15) class. Zach Smith and Joel Chapman were racing for the state championship today with Smith coming out on top for the points lead while clinching a Triple Crown championship in the midst. Taylor Pecika also nailed down the Triple Crown in the youth 150cc 4 Stroke division. As the day wore on the temperatures rose and the dust started to become a factor. In the main event Jerod Stoner would lead from start to finish with Eric Rodgers, Jed Haines and Tyler McCreight battling behind. All look weathered as they came off the track after the two hour stint. I wasn’t able to stay for the ATV main but the results show that vet racer Jason Hughes claimed the overall with Chad Livingston getting the Open A win. At half time the folks from BP Promotions and Polaris Industries gave away a brand new ATV to Leann Bange. Leann’s name was drawn from a box that included everyone’s name that raced in the series this year. It’s just one more perk for racing the PA State Series. Stay tuned to the pages of MRA for upcoming

A Kid’s View
Once again, the ECEA had a huge turnout with a whole day of smooth sailing. The end of the racing season is always exciting because of the championships on the line which makes for good battles until the last checkered is thrown. I hope to see some new faces before the end of the year. See you on the line, #95
A Kids View What’s up? This is Chase. It seemed like just yesterday when I was writing about the first race of the year and the cold weather, and now we are wrapping up the 2007 harescrambles series. On October 14th, Competition Dirt Riders (CDR) hosted the tenth round of the 2007 ECEA series in Millville, New Jersey. In my opinion, this was one of the fastest tracks I had ever ridden. The youth course was about 5 miles long, with the start being in the middle of a sand pit that had some small hills and a lot of whoops, and rolled into nice, flowing single track which made it hard for passing.

Getting Sideways with Cory Texter
Hey Everyone, I hope everyone has a good end to their summer and a good start to the fall season. For me, fall is my favorite month of the year, semi-warm days and cool breezy nights. The dirt always seems to stay moist which makes it easy for me to just go over to the practice tracks without doing hardly any track prep and ride all day. A lot has been going on in the past month and I would be glad to talk about it. On Sept 22, we did a local race in Delta, PA. Bill Brown puts two of these races on every year at the Mason Dixon fairground and what a show. A ton of people in the stands and a great program. This year he even gave the Open A class a 25 lap main. I rode two classes. In both of my heat races I had outside pick. That makes it next to impossible to holeshot on a bullring track with the first corner being 10 feet away
have put me 4th overall counting the GNC riders. We get to run the slightly softer Maxxis tires but again we are giving up 20-25 horsepower as well on a fast track. It really makes a difference. To say the least I felt confident. I got a horrible start in my heat race and could only manage a 4th place. I knew for the final I had to get a holeshot. Well, that didn’t happen and there were guys on the back row going passed me into turn one. I started picking guys off left and right and before I knew it, I was in 4th right behind the leaders. I was very determined to win this race for my team and me. Then, I saw Joe Eades #66s, lowside going into turn one and smack the haybails. Thank goodness he was OK. The restart put me in 3rd behind series leader Matt Weidman #73b and new national number Justin Hittle #23p. I got by Hittle quick coming off turn two and I set my sights on Weidman. I passed Weidman with about four laps to go and set sail to win my first ever professional race. It was awesome to achieve something so great 2,500 miles away from home. It was a good way to end the year and a huge confidence builder for next season.
After Tucson, we went to Las Vegas for a scheduled race on October 6th. Well, the track didn’t like us being on it and it rutted and broke up which caused the racing surface to be more than dangerous. The AMA made a good decision on calling the race due to safety reasons. Some people Lancaster HD’s Cory Texter gets his first National win. weren’t happy, but I was super excited to from the starting line. The track at Delta is considered a “bullring”. It’s 1/10 mile long. We race in 1st gear get home. I finished the year in 4th place in the Basic and it’s a good ol’ fashioned bump and grind track. Twins points. Not what I had hoped for, but for being I never use to like these as a kid, but I am learning to injured for half the races and ending the season with like almost every kind of tracks these days and I was four podiums in a row. With one being a win, and the excited. In my first heat race, I got a horrible start and others being very close wins, I felt pretty good about passed a bunch of guys on the outside to salvage a my first year on the 750. 2nd place finish. I ended up holeshotting and winning my other heat. In the first final, which was the 25 lapper, We came home and I decided I wanted to do a local I got a horrible start again from the middle of the track. race in Spring Run, PA at Path Valley Speedway. I was surprised. season finale for us as you will hear about later. I was In my first heat race, I was last place off the line as I real excited to ride the big 750 on this track. The track got pinched off going into turn one. I turned the gas on looked a lot better today then yesterday. I qualified hard and passed all 7 riders in front of me to win my first in the Basic Expert class all three sessions by heat race. On the last two laps, I saw an occasional good margins. I felt super good. My lap times would front wheel coming all the way from the inside of the track, to inches from my motorcycle, but all in all it was

It was awesome passing so many tuned Rotax 450’s and 505’s on my DTX bike and I felt very confident for the finals, as I also won my Sportsman heat race by a good margin. In the first final, Brandon Robinson nailed the holeshot on his 600 Rotax. I knew if anyone else, he’d be the guy to beat. We grew up racing each other and he always shined on this track. With him on his rotax and me riding the DTX bike, I knew I’d have my work cut out. About 8 laps in and I couldn’t find any speed to pass him. I was riding my tail off and I looked back and we had more then 20 bike lengths over Shawn Baer #32. Coming into turn one on the last lap, I dove it underneath him and held on for the win. I also got the holeshot and won the 750 class as well that night. The last final was the Sportsman final. They put all 17 riders in the final which was asking for danger. We came off turn two about four wide. Brandon, myself, Shawn, and a rider to my inside who I am not sure who it was. Our tires were super cold as it was about 40 degrees out. I spun coming off turn two and I felt a rider hit my back tire. I didn’t think anything of it as I held my line and we were about 10 feet from the guardrail. I later found out it was my good buddy Shawn Baer #32. He was badly hurt. I felt horrible about what happened and I thought it was my fault. Track personal told me that it wasn’t my fault and even though we got tangled up, a rider in the back of the pack ran into him as he was standing up and that is what caused his injuries. There were some tempers flaring and I was fully hurt by seeing Shawn injured and to be blamed for it only made matters worse. It was a
bad deal and especially with there being 17 riders in the final, when there should of only been 12. I am very disappointed in their decision to run so many like that. You earn a spot in the 12 rider final and that’s how it should be at all District 6 races. We can get away with it at a short track national where they run 16, because of the highly skilled riders they have in each final. It was a racing accident and I would never do anything to hurt another rider, let alone someone so close to me as Shawn. I hope he recovers fast because he is an awesome rider and he has big things ahead of him for 2008. After the accident, I was running 2nd place behind Brandon. We changed the lead a couple times and I got by him coming off turn four on the bottom. I didn’t want to make contact with him after what happened earlier in the race, and I gave him his line back and lost the position. I came back under him on the white flag to win the race but just came up short. Short meaning by about 3 feet. It was an awesome race once again and he kept me on my toes all night long and gave me some great competition to race with. My sister Shayna also finished 3rd behind us so it was an overall good night. Now, we have one more local race in Hurricane Hills where my good buddy and sponsor Joe Bromley for Bromley’s Suzuki is helping put on. Then it’s a little relaxation and a lot of training for the winter time. I have some big things planned for next year and I won’t settle for anything less then achieving all my goals for 2008. Staying healthy would be a great thing too. Until the next issue, get the winter jackets out and stay warm. Cards to Shawn can be sent to: Shawn Baer 160 Camp Strauss Rd. Bethel, PA 19507
