Piston Poppers MC

Parkesburg, PA, September 13, 2009 By Ryan Henderson - www.RHDesigns95s.smugmug.com “Shoemaker Tops Texter in Both the Open A and Open Sportsman” Before getting into the wonderful race day that we had at Piston Poppers, I would like to bring some attention to some of our local riders. Little Allen “Bubba” Fogle was injured a few months ago racing at Susquehanna. He made a return to the racing world when he came to watch the race at Trailways over the weekend. He has had a nasty struggle, being re-hospitalized several times after being discharged. It seems that he will be fine, but just needs time to totally heal. One of our local stars, Brandon Robinson, was injured during a crash at the start of the Indy Mile. Brandon was going into the first turn when three riders went down, leaving him with no place to go. He ended up launching over Shaun Russell’s bike and got thrown into the air wall at the edge of the track. The barrier sprung Brandon up and over the fence, hitting a pole on his way to the ground on the other side. He broke his pelvis in three spots, fractured his hipbone in five places, and broke a hip joint. After two surgeries, twenty screws, three plates, and somewhere around 120 staples, he was able to start his recovery process. It is going to be a long road for Brandon throughout the year; please pray for a speedy and complete recovery for him. Two other local riders had the wind taken out of their sails while racing at the Springfield Mile. Donnie Mullen, lately referred to as “Mr. Shorttrack,” high-sided off the back of Jared Mees when coming out of the turn. Donnie was making his move when this happened, so he was taken by surprise. He ended up tearing his MCL at the knee and was going in for surgery this week. Raun Wood was involved in a similar crash that ended up breaking his collarbone. I spoke with Raun at Trailways, and he seemed rather optimistic. He said that

Clifford Diem (#94) is one of the regular riders that hits both the District 6 and 7 races in the 125 and 40+ classes. He is usually accompanied by his son, Travis (#49), who rides the open classes; wife Theresa; and Travis’ girlfriend. Here Cliff is on his dated 125 at Piston Poppers on Sept. 13, 2009.

he was going to change his training program and hit the track hard when he gets back on a bike. Though injured, he is still working hard at the track to mentor up and coming rider Becca Zafia. We are all going to miss seeing them ride for a while and pray for their recoveries. The final rider that I would like to mention on the injured list is Derek Hersh. Derek went

down in the early laps of practice at Trailways. The track was a little wet and seemed to be very slick throughout the practice session. Derek fractured and compressed some of the vertebrae in his back from the hard hit. Please let him know that you’re thinking of him and praying for him. Now for the races….At first light, suspicion arose as to whether or not the track would be ready to race at Piston Poppers. A handful of trucks were running lap after lap trying to pack down the slimy mud. Finally, a backhoe arrived to scrape the majority of the moisture off of the top. By practice, the track was ready to go. It was a perfect day, with sunny skies and decent temperatures. The pits were full of bikes and the fences flooded with spectators. I apologize in advance if any of the information given is slightly incorrect. I am working off of my notes and the results that were available from the track. Everyone was on their feet to watch the Open A and Open Sportsman classes. Corey Texter #65 won his heat races in both classes. In the Open A, Texter received the pole position. Ken Godwin settled in the second spot on the line after his heat win, followed by Jake Shoemaker, Mike McKee, Travis Diem, and Sam Wiggins. Texter got the jump over the pack with Shoemaker close behind. Richard Heverly was running in the third position with Diem trying to make a move. Shoemaker worked hard trying to find a hole around Texter that finally came when Texter slipped. Shoemaker stayed on the gas and made the move to the front position. Texter stayed close behind but never got a chance to make a move. Shoemaker went on to win the race, followed by Texter, Heverly, Diem, and McKee. The Open Sportsman class lined up with Diem on the pole, followed by Texter, Shoemaker, Jonathan Jordan, and Tommy McGrane. Texter pulled another beautiful holeshot and darted out front. Shoemaker was like a shark just waiting to take a bite. He made his move a few laps in and took the

lead from Texter. It was a close battle to the end, but Shoemaker took home the victory. Diem had to work his way around Jordan for his third-place finish, followed by Jordan and Sam Wiggins. Tyler Phillips #3 was on the ball for the two classes that he rode. He had to work his way past the #111 machine of Spohn, who pulled the holeshot in the 250 B class. Phillips kept the entire lead of the race and went on to take home the win. Several riders worked their way through the pack from behind. The #312 of

Going around the long, sweeping turn, three riders went down at the start of the race. The crash took #13 Kevin Bills out of the race. The race was restarted with Phillips jumping out in the lead, followed closely by Clark. The two battled the entire race, and it looked as though Phillips had the win in the bag. Going into the last turn, Clark pulled a motocross move and threw a block pass on Phillips. The move took all of Phillips’ momentum away and gave Clark a chance to get to the checkers first. Clark ended up being disqualified for riding the wrong size bike in the class. Phillips took the win, followed by Jason Cunningham, Gary Jenkins, and Stephen Lerch. Colton Smith #41 took wins in the 125, 85 12-15, and 150 classes. In the 125 class, Smith had to worry about #77 Kirkner, who was breathing down his back. Kirkner couldn’t make the pass, so he had to settle for second. Matt Trout took the third position after a long battle with fourth-place finisher Samantha Bergman. Smith drove away from the pack in the 85 class with no problem. Second place went to the #7b of Gerhart, who had to battle with the #007 of Bond, #17 of Cody Ebersol, #313 of Cook, and the #21 of Joey Juergen. The 150 class showed to be no problem for Colton Smith, as he took the third win of the day. Though there were only three riders, it was a show to watch. Little Cameron Smith stalled at the line, dropping almost a quarter of a lap behind Colton Smith and #64 seated Cody Bauer. Cameron managed to get the bike back up and running in order to put himself back into the race. After a couple of laps, you could see that Cameron was gaining and that he may have a chance at taking the second spot from Bauer, but he would have to make up a lot of ground. On the last lap,

Jake Shoemaker (#55a) and Corey Texter (65) battle after Shoemaker takes the lead of the Open A class at Piston Poppers on Sept. 13, 2009.

Clark got a bad start and was running back in sixth off of the line. He worked his way past the #529 machine and the #67 to take over the fourth position. From there, Clark made a pass on the #13 of Kevin Bills and then #111 of Spohn to take over the second spot where he would finish. Jeremiah Snow didn’t let being in the back bore him. He put a pass on Ryan Connelly and Darren Phillips to scrap two more positions. The start of the Open B main event wasn’t as simple as that of the 250 B.

Cameron was right on Bauer and made the move to take the second spot away and leave Bauer with third. The 85 7-11 class is like a miniature expert class. These little guys run side by side and swap positions continuously at any track that they ride. It is like watching a swarm of bees. The lineup of the front line of the main consisted of Dalton Gauthier, Ryan Varnes, Colin Cunningham, Dustin Healey, Cameron Smith, and Brandon Price. When the green

flag flew, Healey and Cunningham were first off the line. Price ended up getting a drive to take over the lead by the time they made it to the first turn. Cunningham dropped back to second, followed by back row starter Kenny Kolsovsky. On lap two, Kolsovsky made a move to take second from Cunningham. While Price checked out, Gauthier worked on Cunningham to take over the third spot, just before Cunningham’s chain popped. Smith moved into the fourth spot and Varnes the fifth, where they would finish. Most of these riders were also in the 65 7-11 class. Dustin Healey pulled the holeshot over Gauthier, Price and Chase Smith as he did in the heat race. Gauthier tailed Healey for several laps before he could take over the lead. Brandon Price and Nathan Reichert were battling for the third spot while the two leaders pulled ahead. Gauthier ended up taking the win followed by Healey, Price, Reichert, and Tyree Moore.

Alex Thomas pulled the holeshot by several bikes over Nathan Reichert, Zach Kolsovsky, Kaiden Rhoads, Chase Smith and the #46 of Myers. Kolsovsky and Reichert worked fast to get past Thomas before they pulled away. Smith and Myers worked their way up to third and fourth, dropping Thomas to fifth. Reichert got past Kolsovsky to take home the win. Thomas also ran the 50 shaft class where Tyree Moore was first off the line. Before entering the first turn, Racer Stacey took over the lead. The pack made their way around the long, sweeping banked turn. Coming up to jump it was Alex Thomas out front with Kaiden Rhoads hot on his heels. The two riders pulled ahead of the pack and stayed together. Going into the last turn, Thomas left room, and Rhoads made a quick pass for the lead. Rhoads took home the win, followed by Thomas, the #17 of Benson (his first race ever), Racer Stacey, and then first year rider

Robert Wheatley. The 50 4-6 chain driven class consisted of five little riders. Damon Ream proved to be victorious once again, taking the win. The #25 of Supplee came in second, followed by Racer Stacey, the #4 of Kerstetter, and then the #18 of Grow. Skip a couple years, and we have the 30+ class. Repeated winner Ace Phillips pulled the holeshot over Roy Miller, Dillon Cava, Rich Mellinger, Kenny Godwin, and the #21 of Mullen. Miller was able to hang with Phillips for a couple of laps before falling back. Mullen was in the third spot before pulling off, giving Cava the position. Mellinger and Godwin picked up a spot to take over fourth and fifth. In the final laps, Cava put a charge on Miller but couldn’t take the position and settled for third. Phillips made his way to another win. The 40+ classes proved to be another win for Pennsylvania rider Raymond Jenkins. Jenkins has been up front the entire year and seems very consistent. Piston Poppers was a test for him because he would have to take his chances on a 250, now that his 450 is no longer running. He proved that it wasn’t the bike winning the races when he rode the 250 to beat the #331 of McNeil, the #111 of Spohn, Ken Haldemann, and the #21 of Mullen. They ended up finishing in that order. Jenkins tested his luck in the 250 sportsman class with Roy Miller Rich Mellinger, Travis Diem, and the #69 of Carr. Mellinger took the holeshot on the #16a Trout machine, followed by Miller. Miller tagged Mellinger but couldn’t make the pass. Diem was running third not too far behind Miller and just in front of Jenkins. Mellinger went home with the win, followed by Miller, Diem, Jenkins, and Carr. This was a great day for racing and wonderful event. You can find more information at www.bctra.com. 27th Annual PA State Motocross Championships Clifford, Pa - September 13, 2009 By Jim Sanderson Rice, Correia Capture PA State MX Championships Just slightly more than 300 motocross enthusiasts came out to Hurricane Hills for the biggest races of the season, the 27th Annual PennsylvaniaStateMotocrossChampionships. The best riders from the Keystone State and beyond came to Hurricane Hills to compete for the coveted title of Pennsylvania State Motocross Champion. Mark Rice topped the podium of the Over 25 B/C division with a consistent 2-2 score. Rice led the start of the opening moto and held the point until the last lap, giving up the lead to Marcelo Vasquez, who got the first moto win but could only muster a fourth in the final moto, giving Vasquez the runner-up tier of the podium. Rice rounded the second turn in fifth on the start of the final moto and held the point until the final moments of lap three. Rice held on to take second. Chad Robinson closed out the podium via a 4-3 tally. Rice, Chris Murray, Craig Kollmer, Vasquez and Robinson led the pack out of the second turn in the opening Over 25 B/C moto. Rice and Murray traded places several times before the start of lap two. Rice secured the point for good after two and a quarter laps. Snow then made a mistake that allowed Schipper, Vasquez and Russ Kollmer to advance. Snow was displaced to fifth. Rice had a two-second lead at the start of lap three. Kollmer, now in second, battled with Rice for three-quarters of lap three and made the pass for the lead moments before the white flag flew. Kollmer took the win two seconds ahead of Rice. Robinson, Vasquez and Deitzler followed. Danny Colachino, Joseph Galbraith, Schae Thomas and Justin Yedinak led the start of the first Jr. Mini moto. Galbraith took the lead just prior to the start of lap two. Colachino was relegated to second. Correia, Thomas and Yedinak rounded out the top five. Correia passed Colachino on lap two and closed the gap on Galbraith and made the pass for the lead after two and a half laps. Correia pulled away and took the checkers with a fivesecond lead. Thomas, Galbraith, Yedinak and Colachino completed the top five. Trevor Pritchard, Correia, Thomas and Colachino led the start of the final Jr. Mini moto. Correia quickly diced his way to the front and took the point position near the end of lap one. Correia had a two-second lead at the start of lap three. Round 9 of 10 of the 2009 D6 Ultimate Quad Series made its second visit to Berwick, PA, at the Evansville MX Park. Summer was not done yet, as temps were in the 80s, and blue skies and a bright sun shown down on the hillside track. Mcghee put is head down in the Open “B” class by going 2-1 over Matthew Cusamano and Jonathan Metzger. In Open “A,” it was a battle between an up and coming “A” class rookie, Nick Moser, and a cagey veteran, Denny Rinehimer. The #5 of Rinehimer would hold the lead for “almost” the entire six laps. Moser got a drive coming up the hill just few turns before the finish and was able to get enough of his nose under

Denny to take the inside and get the first moto win. The second was shaping to have the same outcome, but Rinehimer, using his knowledge of his home track to his advantage, stuck to his lines and held Moser off to take the Moto 2 win and the overall. Moser would also take second in the Pro-Am class. Taking the win with a 1-1 finish was Anthony Burke. Trevor Mack jumped two spots to the top step in the Open “C” class by running a consistent 2-2 over Timon Davis 1-3 and Cody Johnson 4-1. #48 Matthew Shroyer of Conestoga, Pa., had his hands full holding off the #940 of Dylan Tremellen in both motos. Zach Sinz on his Amped Apparel-backed Honda took third. Ronald Ranck had a perfect day in both the 40+ and 30+ classes. Also having a perfect day in the 25+ class, Shaun “Bruiser” Lawton would go 1-1 for an overall win. The 50cc classes ran the Supercross track, which really seemed to suit Dale Raven in the

But Myers would not be denied in the Quad Jr. class by narrowly taking the overall win over his toughest competitor of the year, Kevin Kubinak. D7 President’s Corner This year we have so much support from our local shops and vendors. It’s our responsibility to support those who are there for us. We all need to make sure these folks know who we are and how much we appreciate their support and help through their various contingency programs. Richard Riley’s Fredericktown Yamaha supports riders who are national dirt trackers and supermoto riders. He supports these young riders who grew up locally and now have taken their skills to the national level. Mike Twigg, Twigg Cycles in Hagerstown, was National #54 (sorry Mike, I might have misquoted your number) back in his younger years. Mike is a racer who knows family values and supports all of the local series. Randy Texter, Lancaster Harley Davidson, is a former top ten national holder who travels the country with his racing family, Cory and Shayna. All of these gentlemen need and want your business. Bromley Suzuki is owned and run by a racing family. Joe Bromley has taken on a position with the AMA that requires him to fly back and forth across the country so that he can secure a racing future for all of us while still being able to attend the races with his children. Don Kissinger, Don’s Kawasaki of Hallam, Pennsylvania, supports various racers on the local and national level. His daughter, Erin, races locally and attended the amateur nationals this year. Rusty Bradford, RNB, attends all of the series’ races. Jeff Cernics, Cernics Cycles, probably has the largest sponsorship that reaches nationwide. Ellicott City Motorsports has stepped up this year and has supported all of our different series. Shenandoah Honda has reached out across state lines to support all of our disciplines also. Battley Cycles and Bob’s BMW have long been devoted supporters of our series and banquet. Last, but not least, are Pete’s Cycle of Bel Air, Baltimore, and Annapolis. John Leash learned how to race from his father and continues the racing tradition today. Pete’s Cycle has sponsored various series and advertised on the radio and billboards throughout the state. The common factor with all of these shop owners is that they are family members, who, just like us, love the sport. We all need to keep our

President’s Corner business in the family. Be sure to visit these shops over the holidays. Introduce yourself as a racer and tell them how much you appreciate their support. (If I have forgotten to mention one of our sponsor shops, please let me know, and I will make it right next issue.) We’re coming to a close, and all of our champions will soon be crowned. It’s time to celebrate and acknowledge all the hard work it took to climb to the top. District 7’s banquet will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Timonium, Maryland. This is open to the public and not just to all of the award-winners. It’s a full night of entertainment with a sit-down dinner. Don’t miss out on this year’s celebration! In addition, we’ll be having our annual sanction meeting starting at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at the same location. We’ll be having Dave Hembroff, AMA Road Riding manager, to explain the direction, goals, and initiatives that the organization is seeking. This is an open session to the general public, and everyone is invited. In the meantime, keep your feet on the pegs, go fast and take chances. Wayne Sody

Hey all racers,

Happy Autumn Motocross!

What a season this has been. Thirty-six races from three series all come down to the final shootout at Pleasure Valley. Then we get four days of rain, and, to top it all off, I drive through snow to get to the track. Thankfully it did not snow at the track. Well, it all came down to 16 motos, and the PAMX series got the silver cup, MDRA was second, and Ultimate was third. So it is in the record books, and we now start working on next year. I want to thank all the MDRA riders who attended and put their efforts in this year’s shootout. Next year the shootout will include five series, it will be held at Doublin Gap, and we will have four manufacturers contingency participating. We should have all the classes aligned so there is no confusion. The silver cup will be at all the banquets so all the riders can see what they are racing for. Jeff and I are working on the 2010 schedule now and hope to share this with all the MDRA riders very soon. Thanks for a great year, and if I don’t see you down South this winter I will see you in the spring at the first MDRA round!

Sooner or later, and we hope it’s later, frost and snow will be hitting the motocross tracks across the northeast, and the season will finally come to an end (I’m not sure there are any tracks that still hold motocross events in the snow like the days of yesteryear). There certainly are enough diehard motocrossers who would like to give it a try. Before some of us head to Florida or the South to continue the use of our skills, some of the southern motocross tracks in District 6 will still fill out the October and November schedule with race events. Fall racing in the northeast is some of the best there is. Please check the track websites for more information. All 19 sponsors have teamed up once again with the nine motocross promoters of the D6MXPG to bring you another exciting banquet at the Inn at Reading on January 23, 2010. Once again, the banquet committee has organized another exciting banquet to honor those who have excelled in the sport of motocross throughout the season. The 10 Motocross Ultimate Series events turned out some record high numbers, and the competition was exciting to say the least. No doubt the best of the best will be at the awards banquet. Check the District 6 website (www.d6mx.com) for more detailed information. See you at the banquet and around the tracks.

Happy Ramblers MC Round # 12 – MDRA Series September 20, 2009 By Jim Bull Photo.com

Jim Dobbs races to the win in 35 + B at the last round, finishing second in the 2009 series.

The 12th and final round of the 2009 MDRA Race Series came to the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club in Hanover, PA, in late September on a fabulous early fall weekend. You never know what you’re going to get at the last round of a race series. As I made my way to the facility under cool temperatures and sunny skies that morning, I was betting that we’d see a good crowd to cap off the series. As I was trying to find space at the track to park, I knew it was going to be a great day of racing. The crowd was over 600 entries strong on this day, as a matter of fact one of the larger ones of the year. There were close points battles in most of the classes as the MDRA Series is well attended throuhout the year. Many riders attend all 12 rounds, and this always produces close racing come crunch time. The 35 + A group would start off the day, and, as usual at Happy, the classes clicked off one by one without a hitch. Large gates and fast racing was the motto of the day, and championships were won and lost, but all had a grand time. You can check the results here for the day’s event and log onto www.mdramxracing.com to see all of the year-end point standings. The year-end banquet will be in the books by the time you are reading this, but rest assured, the awards will be many and the food will be topnotch. I’m sure plans are already in the works for next year’s series. I hear it’s going to be better than ever. Stay tuned to these pages and the

MAMA MX, Middleford Speedway Seaford, DE - September 19-20, 2009 PJ Timberman www.DelmarvaSportsPhotography.com

MAMA took over the track the weekend of Sept 19-20 at Middleford Speedway in Seaford, DE, for the 11th race of the 2009 season. With temps in the mid-70s, it was a perfect weekend for racing. Saturday’s main events started with Senior Open and Support taking the gate. Todd Stitih #62 took both wins in Open, and Mark Walker #20 took both in Support. TJ Irvin #77 won both motos in Collegeboy, and Amanda Brown #293 won both in the Women’s class. Brown also went on to take both motos in Mini Women Open on Sunday and also took home an overall sixth place in 250C. John Kernan #52 ran unopposed in Super Senior Open, while Eugene Kaczka #17 won both motos in Super Senior Support over 16 other riders. Zachary Page #479 won both in Schoolboy and also placed second in both motos in 250C on Sunday behind leader Jacob Belotti #177. Belotti had a great weekend by not only taking first in 250C over 36 other riders but also by winning in Open C and finishing overall second in Schoolboy 14-16. Perry Boswell was another rider who had a great weekend by overcoming a fourth-place finish in the first 250B moto to come back and

Delaware State Championships Blue Diamond Park, New Castle, DE September 27, 2009 16 Inches Of Standing Water On The Track Was Not Enough For The Racers To Call It Quits! By Brandon Kemplin, D-7 Contingency Chairman Race@Motoxpress.Net

Can I just say rain? It rained for two days! Then it almost seemed like it rained some more! Believe it or not, the track seemed like it had better traction when it was raining. There was literally 16 inches of water on the track in places. The water would almost hydroplane your boots right off your pegs during practice. But once the rained stopped, it was no longer standing water, but thick, peanut butter mud. It felt like racing a hare scramble. The conditions definitely made it interesting.

By Brandon Kemplin

Not even the A class looked like the A class. It was a tough day, but a fun day. If you made it through your moto with your goggles still on your face and not on your arm (or just tossed off the track), you were lucky. As soon as I pulled off the track at the end of my moto, my bike just up and died! She had had enough, and with almost 50 lbs. of extra mud weight I couldn’t blame her. My RMZ put in a great effort, and she was done for the season. Race day was packed with some serious competition. Every one had brought their “A” game. Nobody came out and persevered through all the weather issues to not put in a whipping the big table tops in the nastiest mud. Most could not believe they were seeing such skill in the C class. Those guys are definitely upping their game! The next generation of up and coming racers are on an entirely different level than some of us older guys! But isn’t that how it always is? Somebody has to pave the way, and the rest fly by! Thanks for another great race Alan. Hopefully I will see most of you guys and girls at the District 7 Year-end Awards Banquet. It’s been a great season!

Despite the weather, Alan still pulled off a good race, and most still had a good time. Instead of our traditional two-moto format, Alan opted for single extended motos for all classes. I think that was a good idea. It was less wear and tear on the bikes, the track, and the riders. Truth be told, more than a handful of us would not have been able to handle a second moto. In every class there were riders down!

serious effort! Most classes had four to five riders down at a time over different parts of the track; the ruts were serious. This track, as everyone well knows, is traditionally a fast track. Not on this day; we were all in slow motion just trying to survive, except for one 250 open C rider who lapped the entire field with authority. This kid was pinned the entire race. There was a lot of talk in the pits as to what class he should be riding in. He had style and power and was one of the few throughout the entire day who was clearing every obstacle. He definitely has skills and will probably find a little more competition in a higher class. I was definitely impressed with his technique! This guy could ride; it was like watching Bubba race. Wide open in every turn,

Ted off mud), we got the day started set to run in September. Much like the another rider over one of the jumps and Veneman takes a 1-1 in 60+ to lock up on-schedule, and the racing was close spring races, Mother Nature played a dislocated a shoulder. Jim had been in that title the old-fashioned way...he just as expected. In 25+A, veteran D7 front-runner key role in providing excess watering first place in 40+B and third in 30+B goes faster on the track than the other Chris Schueler showed up for the 9/12 Blue Diamond and flat ran away with the race event, with it being postponed (1-1). It was good to see Chris to 10/3, so we start the series back in action, and hopefully wrap-up coverage with Rocket we’ll see more of him in 2010. Raceway’s 9/19 event. But the real question in 25+A Rocket Raceway 9/19 was whether Joe Yagloski’s Despite predictions of rain for momentum from the Rocket this event, we could not have race would carry him up and asked for any nicer weather, over Jeff McClure. the series. Gery Vandervliet must have liked the approach, as he also went 1-1 in 40+B to wrap up that title over Dave Hogge and Bill Hahn, who finished #2 and #3 on the day and in the series. The same cast of characters did about the same in 45+B as well, this time with Bill Hahn topping Dave Hogge for the series #2. In the 45+A class, Scott Saville was able to take a breather with Greg Lykens and Mike Farmer both out on this day. It was good to see Mike walking around (slowly and painfully) as he recovers from multiple broken parts and bruises, but at least he was walking around at the track rather than sitting in the hospital as he was at the start of the week! With the top seat decided, Brooke Tyler had the shot at moving up in the standings and did so with a 1-2 finish for the day. The real story behind the story, though, was #100 Mark Frankian. Mark came into the day sixth in the series and fought his way through the pack to finish second

in the first moto, tying on points for third in the series with Tim Titcomb going into the final moto. Not sure what he did for motivation between motos, but whatever it was worked, and he ripped a wire-to-wire win over Tyler for the first on the day and third in the series. As they say in the movies, “I’ll have what he’s having!” In 50+, just-over-the-hill rider Tom Leizear celebrated his new age by going 1-1 over Tim Titcomb’s 2-2. Early race leader Dave Resch used 3-3 finishes for the day to pull up into third for the series over the “injured reserve” team of Mike Farmer (#4) and Rick Wenger (#5). Ted Veneman capped his first year of racing 60+ with a final 1-1 for the day, and Michael Thompson used a strong 2-1 finish for the day to capture his 250/450 Support title over Zach Guilday’s 4-3. Michael’s bike blew up early in practice, and he had to borrow dad Mike Crocker’s bike to close the deal. Maybe it’s the bike? Not! Both riders got the job done the oldfashioned way by twisting the throttle and staying on two wheels! That’s it for 2009! Final standings for the top positions are shown below, and we hope to see more of you at the Masters MX events in 2010. D6 UMX Quad Doublin Gap - October 4, 2009 By Michael Salerno

Matt Cusamano took care of business in Open B.

Jeremy Ledonne puts the hammer down en route to a 2-1 overall win in the Sr. Mini class.

#88 Joel Hetrick stretches his lead over #14 Billy Cottage and #41 Tony Lucarelli.

The final round of the 2009 D6 Ultimate Quad Series in conjunction with Round 6 of the PAMX ATV Regional Championship Series came to Doublin Gap MX Park in Shippensburg, Pa. The weather man predicted rain all weekend, but once again he was wrong. Only a light

shower Friday night came down, which actually helped the track come in nice for the weekend. For this season, the track crew reversed the direction, which made for an interesting but challenging course. Breaking bumps seemed to be giving a lot of riders trouble. By the end of practice on Saturday, riders adjusted their suspension to be able to get into the corners quicker without the quad pushing to the outside. After practice, the track crew went to work on prepping the track for Sunday’s racing action. Riders and their families showered up and ate some dinner as a cool autumn night settled in. After the Sunday morning church service and riders’ meeting ended, it was time for the engines to fire up along with the racing action. In the 90cc Prod class, Travis

Wotring won the first moto, but bike troubles in the second cost him the overall. Logan Bishop went on to take the overall win over Shelby Cobrando and Lucas Lumadue. The #99 of Jeremy Ledonne goes 2-1 in the Sr. Mini class over moto one winner Nicholas Major and Travis Wotring. A perfect day for Dale Raven, not only in the 50cc Stock but the 50cc Prod as well. 70cc Prod class had #881 Adam Devonshire taking the overall, edging out #99t Logan Tremellen and #525

Joseph Cavaliere. The big brother of Logan, Dylan Tremellen also a had good day by taking the overall win in the School Boy class over Andrew Hixson and Zach Sinz. Open C had the biggest numbers of the day with 35 riders. The top 10 riders out of each group combined to make the 20 for the second moto. The #051 of Chris Hoffman out of Clearville, Pa., took the win over #93x Tyler Cramer and #6 Aaron Poklembo. The overall winner in the Consi class

Jeff Thompson takes the Moto 1 holeshot in the 30+ class.

Adam Devonshire soars to an overall win in the 70cc Prod class.

was Doug Starry, beating out Zach Berghof and Shane Shoemaker. Open B class had the Kawasaki-mounted rider #23 Matthew Cusamano going 1-2 for the win over #21 Nick Kohan and #160 Tyler Horwith. A 17-1 in Open B, Tyler Dommel would come back charging hard in the College Boy by going 1-1 over Chad Davis and Matthew Hildenbrand. Joel Hetrick took the overall win in ProAm, edging out fellow Kawi rider Tony Lucarelli and the Honda of Billy Cottage. Cottage would capitalize on the mistakes of Hetrick and Lucarelli in the Open A class and would go on to take the overall win. On the Lost Creek Cycles Suzuki, rider Jeff Thompson would have a perfect day in the both 30+

and 40+ classes, taking the win over Ronald Ranck. In the 25+ class, Roy Lampron went 1-1 over Matt Adlinger and Bryan Rabatin. This concludes the 2009 D6 Ultimate Quad Series. It was a great year of racing, with hard battles between bitter rivals and good friends. Now it’s time to tear down the bikes and start the winter training because you know that your competitors will not be slacking in the off-season. If you’re still looking for some racing, Raceway Park will have the Tri-State race on Nov. 1 and their sixth annual Fall Classic on Nov. 21 and 22. Keep the throttle pinned!!!! DMX BP Hare Scramble October 4, 2009

By Megan Ego - www.egofocused.smugmug.com Dutchmen MX Park was the host of the 12th round of the PA State Harescramble series, which is almost the end of another great year of racing. There was a great turnout and awesome weather for the event. It was a little dusty for the quads (when isn’t it?), but luckily the wind was blowing it away as soon as it was kicked up. Along with the great weather and great turnout was some awesome racing going on out on the track. The day started off with the youth racers with tremendous races in the 85cc 12-15 and 85cc 7-11 classes. In the 85cc 12-15, Cody Gerhard, on a Kawasaki, and Craig Delong, on a KTM, had quite the battle on their hands. Gerhard had a good lead on Delong for the start of the race, but the gap started to close in the middle of

the race. In the end, Delong finished behind Gerhard by only 57 seconds. In the 85cc 7-11 class there was another close finish, with Dawson Evitts finishing ahead of Timothy Lambert, on a KTM, by 43 seconds. There were a ton of racers in the adult bike class for the two-hour race. The race had a sour start with Timmy Hunter, in the open A class on a KTM, crashing during the first lap. He had the overall lead coming into the main motorcross track and was absolutely flying around the track. He lost it on the whoops section, and the fence caught him. He was unable to finish the race, which is a shame because Hunter was looking determined to win! There were good races in the Vet B and in the 201-open class. In the Vet

B class, there was a battle between Mathew Remanley and Robert Hertz, both riding on Hondas. Remanley finished ahead of Hertz by 48 seconds. In the 201-open class, Mark Matthias, on a Yamaha, and Shane Wiegel had a close battle throughout the whole race. During the last lap, Matthias pulled away and beat Wiegel by only 38 seconds. In the quad classes they had the most racers in the classes and had two of the closest races of the day. In the quad C 16-24 class, James Barder had the lead over John Snesavage for the first couple of laps. Then Snesavage took the lead in the fourth lap. In the end, their difference was only 5 seconds, with Snesavage coming up with the win. The closest race of the day goes to the quad 200-300 class. Tyler

2009 American Suzuki Triple Crown Shootout

Pleasure Valley Raceway - October 17-18, 2009 Photos by Desirae Kimble

Rain and Snow Doesn’t Stop Shootout 2008 Triple Crown Shootout Champions MDRA Came to Pleasure Valley Raceway to defend their crown, but there were three problems: one, PAMX did not want to lose in their backyard; two, District 6’s Ultimate riders had a say in this also; and three, Old Man Winter decided to pay a visit. Friday’s Practice had been canceled due to the rain and snow showers, but Saturday morning the bikes started and qualified for Sunday’s Shootout. Moto 1: PAMX Sweep the top three positions in the 250C class, with Noah Vislosky taking his Yamaha to victory followed by Derek Means and Alexander Mauk rounding out the top three. The 250A Class is where the riders were battling for a piece of the $5,000 purse. Early leader Brian Shuckhart battled with the likes of Phillips and Slusser, and when Phillips

40 Kawasaki made a mistake and Carsten on his Rockstar Bromley Suzuki made the pass and took the checkered for District 6’s first Triple Crown Class win. In the B/C Class, Dave Capane on his PAMX RMz 450 riding like Billy Liles in the 1985 MX of Nations came from behind to win the +40 class and gave PAMX a commanding lead in the points chase for the cup. Ultimate’s Carsten also raced the +25 class, were he battled another Loretta champion and former Supercross stars. Loretta Lynn’s champion Jimmy Evans and Davey Yezek lined up on the +25 line next to Carsten, and when the checkered flag flew, it was Evans, Carsten, and Yezek rounding out the top three once again, Carsten holding the flag high for the Ultimate Series and Evans and Yezek padding the lead for PAMX.

The question of the day was “Who are the Champions?” PAMX was there with a strong showing, and Ultimate with their top riders. Where was MDRA in the mix? As the question was asked, the 50 classes arose. Having to use the B track, the four 50 classes and the 7-9 65 class used the B Mini Track to decide who was going to win this championship. First was the 65 7-9 Class Brock Papi on his New Monster Energy KX 65. He pulled both holeshots and led every lap of the 65 class. Hank Hays and Cody Wagner kept Papi honest the entire moto. PAMX takes the lead in the championship standings. Now the 50s in Class 1, Cameron Davis had to make a decision: Am I PAMX or MDRA? Davis is a National Caliber 50cc rider from Apollo, PA, who raced the PAMX and MDRA Series. His decision was to race under the MDRA flag. The flag flew, and PAMX’s Blake Fisher and Cameron Davis went side by side going up the first of two uphills, Davis in the lead, Fisher second, and Jayden Shindel third. Five riders battled the PVR Mini Course, and at the end MDRA’s Cameron Davis took the moto win and was the first MDRA champion of the day. At this point, PAMX had a large lead, with Ultimate and MDRA battling for second. Cameron Davis went on to win the 50cc 4-6 oil class with Blake Fisher taking the second position and Corey Passieu third. 50cc 7-8, the fastest of the 50cc class, was on the same pace as the 65’s. In the class for the day was Bobby Semelsberger of Windber, PA, 2008 PAMX Class Champion; Christopher Tedesco, a top PAMX rider that was just

collided into Slusser on the Suzuki Launch just before the finish line, it seemed like Shuckhart had the 250A championship locked up. Through the pack from a bad start came Team Green Kawasaki’s Michael Willard, who caught and passed Shuckhart and took the moto win. Shuckhart took second, and from back in the pack Ryan Boyer rounded out the top three for another PAMX team sweep. Willard also backed up his performance in the Open A Class and 4-Stroke class to become the day’s first and only triple class winner. One of the battles of the weekend came when the +40A and +40B/C riders lined up in the +40A class. It was up to Ultimate Series and former Supercross Star Barry Carsten lined up against Loretta Lynn Champion Ray Niebel. Niebel pulled the holeshot on his Team Green backed Cernic’s Kawasaki, and right on his back tire was Carsten. Niebel held Carsten off for the first half of the moto, when the number

getting off an injury; and Morgantown, West Virginia’s Christian McCauley. At the start came the 81 of Semelsberger, with Tedesco and McCuley running in third. Carlisle, PA’s Colton Yentzer was charging through the pack from a bad start running fourth, but at the end it was the 81 of Bobby Semelsberger taking the checkered with Tedesco and McCauley taking the second and third spots on the podium. Overall, the American Suzuki Triple Crown Championship was a great success. Turnout was low due to the weather, but the racing was at its best. One rider said it best: “I’m here for my team, and my team is PAMX. The only reason I’m here today is because I hear the Yentzers at their riders’ meeting rubbing it into us that MDRA was the champions, and on the Pre-Entry form it said 2008 champions. Well, I came to make a difference. I hate racing in the mud, but today was my MX of Nations, and it felt great to win and be a part of the championship team. PAMX Won the championship 325 points to MDRA’s 225 and Ultimate’s 185 points. Next year’s event will be at Doublin Gap in Shippensburg, PA, with two new associations joining the Shootout - MAMA and District 7. Pleasure Valley would like to thank the following sponsors of the American Suzuki Triple Crown Shootout: Rod Lopsanak, Ron Myers and Jim Bugulski of American Suzuki, MSR and Answer Racing, Dunlop Tires, Scott Goggles, In The Blood Tattoo, Total Image Autosport, Pro Action Suspension, Winners’ Choice Awards and Plum Contracting.

Tristan Kimble #141 won second in Supermini 1, second in Junior Mini and third in 85.
