Hello Race Fans

Exciting news, Jim Bull returns as the publication manager for MRA. Hey everybody, it’s great to be back. Many of you know by now, but I’m sure there are many who don’t. Matter of fact, there are many new readers since I was even involved with MRA, like the MAMA and D7 clubs that I’ve never even met. For those of you that don’t know me, I am the former owner of this really, really cool publication. I owned and operated MRA from early 2002 through late 2008. At that point I took a break from the action to pursue some personal interests but have now returned to throw myself back into the fun and to help everyone involved in our great sport have the best media outlet available for your reading and marketing enjoyment. For those of you who do remember me, thanks for opening the door and welcoming me back. I was like a junkie without his drug, and I’m glad I’ve finally found my way back. I’ll have to ask all of you to bear with me if you would for a bit. I’m a little out of shape but will get my wheels under me soon. I jumped back in

without any practice, but rest assured things will work out great in the end. Now on to the racing. 2010 is winding down quickly, and by the time you’re reading this most of the big races will be in the books, and most of the point standings will be final. In addition, it appears there is some change taking place all over the region. New alliances are being forged with some old ones being lost. Like everything, there are some that agree and some that don’t, and even at this printing I’m not quite sure that everything is settled yet. My bet, however, is that racing will grow and thrive in 2011. After all, competition is our lifeblood. Is that not why all of us participate in this great sport? I do believe that if everyone is willing to work hard they’ll come through these changes and that racing will be as intense as ever come the new year. I believe that racers will have more choices now than ever before, and that’s one of the things that makes this country great, the right to have a choice. I ask that everyone be a little patient and open to some change and then get ready to gear up for a new season; it’s gonna be hot. Some other changes that you may see coming real soon will be right here in the pages of MRA. Get ready for better race coverage, get ready for more rider interviews, get ready for fitness and maintenance tips, and get ready for everything you deserve in a local racing publication. Keep an eye out for better distribution channels and ways to get the print version of MRA. Keep an eye on our website as that continues to grow, and keep an eye out for ways to make your paper better. As always, your input is appreciated and welcomed as long as it helps the sport. My contact info is listed below, and I’m at the track every weekend, so please say hi, send an e-mail, or give me a call. After all, it’s all about making it better for you!! See you at the track – Jim Bull, MRA

President’s Corner MAMA Members,

D7 Members, We have some bad news and some good news to end the year on. I would like to thank all District 7 members for their support at all of this year’s races. The district represents all disciplines and will continue to support all of its riders no matter where, how or what you race. All of the volunteers who donate their time thank all of you racers for your continued support of the District. The District Board wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Please remember to thank all of your family members that have supported your efforts all year long racing. This year’s annual awards banquet will be held at the Hunt Valley Marriott on December 4, 2010. As always, this is the premier event of the year to celebrate and recognize all of our class champions. We’ve kept the cost down and taken our banquet back to one of the best hotel venues in the local area. Make your reservations early, and book your table for the best show in town. The sad news starts with a fallen rider named Hunter Pitts. Hunter was involved in a horrific crash at the start of his moto at the last race of the motocross gold series race at Budds Creek. Hunter’s status can be viewed daily at www.caringbridge.org/visit/hunterpitts or by going to the District’s website, www.amadistrict7.com, where the home page has a direct link. Please keep Hunter Pitts and his family in your prayers. We wish Hunter a fast recovery. Congratulations to Jake Johnson for winning this year’s premier dirt track championship. Jake will hold the number one plate in the expert twins’ class. Jake has deep roots in this area racing at all of the local tracks throughout his childhood. Jake will hopefully be at this year’s Timonium Indoor Series at the Maryland State Fairgrounds on December 11, 12, and 19th. We can all be very proud that we have a national champion that comes from our area. Jake also receives support from Tucker/ Rocky’s Answer program. Our website has all of this year’s

participants’ final results posted. Check out the website and find out how our local riders benefited from this year’s contingency program. You can be a rider that benefits next year. Congratulations go out to our local Loretta Lynn racers. The riders worked hard all year to accomplish their goals that very few of us are fortunate to do. The following are some results to the best of my knowledge. Please forgive me for misspellings or incorrect results. The top awardees this year are Jack Rodgers, 3rd place podium finish in the 50cc 7-8 class; Broc Schmelyun, 4th 450A, 11th Pro Sport; John Bowlin, 5th 35+; Austin Simpson, 7th Super Mini 2; Gage Keith, 8th 50cc 7-8; Alexander Frye, 8th 85 cc. Participants also included Mark Cushion, 65cc and 85cc; Shane Desell, 65cc; Tyler Kirshner, 85cc; Austin Toscov, Super Mini 1; Nick Surrell, Schoolboy; Heather Snyder, Girls; Amanda Brown, Girls and Women; Justin Rob Bell, 65cc; Cameron Dowell, 65cc. Thank you all for representing this area and your sponsors and families for your great accomplishments.

Our season concluded with an excellent race at Tomahawk Raceway on the 23rd and 24th of October. I would like to thank Chad for all the support. We had an excellent turnout and some very competitive racing. The weekend concluded with Moms and Dads going out to race in the parents’ races. The motocross industry has gone through some tough economic times over the past few years. MAMA has been fortunate to have persevered through this. Turnout averaged more than 500 riders per race, an excellent accomplishment based on the current economic issues. Thank you to our members and your continued support that made this all possible. Please plan accordingly for the banquet on December 4, 2010, at the Marriott BWI. We will have a large trophy package, many giveaways, entertainment, and wonderful food, as always. This will be a great time to spend with friends and family. After four years of being President of MAMA, I am stepping down. Ken Laurie will be taking the reins in 2011, and I am certain he will do a fabulous job. I must say that this has been a wonderful time being involved with such a great organization. The last 10 years of being involved with MAMA in various roles, from Head Referee, President, Webmaster, to Points Administrator, has gone by quickly. We have made significant strides in trying to make certain we put on the best event possible for our members. We did this by foremost listening to our members. We also moved toward a computerized scoring system, started using Kiosks, and implemented a new transponder system this year. We know this is a continual process to put a top-notch event on and encourage our members to help us by continuing to provide us with your suggestions and comments.

I have come to know many wonderful folks that truly make this organization the best motocross organization- bar none. I want to thank every member of this organization for allowing me the opportunity to serve you. I will continue to be peripherally engaged as a consultant like my dear friend Russ Irvin. I would also like to thank the Bensons, who I have come to know and think of as family. I also want to thank every board member for the wonderful job done in 2010. Without your dedication and work ethic, none of this would have been possible. You folks are awesome and made my job easy. May you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. May God keep you safe through the holiday seasons, and I look forward to seeing everybody during the 2011 season. Lowell Spangler grew up racing the District 6 scene with his father Jim always by his side. He started at Sleepy Hollow on the 50cc bike and has matured into the latest local to hit the pro scene. Lowell’s move has been carefully calculated and longawaited, and the time has come to anxiously chase the “big time.” Lowell had a great showing at Loretta’s this year and made a fantastic pro debut at Steel City this fall. Check out his story below. We wish Lowell the best of luck in all that he does.

Spangler finished an impressive 20th O/A in his Pro debut at Steel City this year.

Name: Lowell Spangler Age: 20 Hometown: Lebanon, PA Rides: 2010 Kawasaki 250F and 450F Pro Classes: Race #: 529 How long racing: 15 years What or who inspires you to race: Winning Best LL Finish: Second Place How many times there: 11 years Upcoming plans: Race 2011 Lites Supercross Series and 2011 Outdoor Series Goals: Finish top 5 in point in the Lites SX Series. Mechanic: John “5” Spotts Sponsors: Monster Energy Kawasaki Team Green, Traxxas, Pro Circuit, MSR, Scott, Dunlop, Maxima, MGX Unlimited, UFO, Works Connection, Kicker, Metal Mulisha, Braking, Twin Air, Boyesen, Renthal, Mandingo Pickles, Hot Hedz Designs, KB5, Deluxx Bikes. Tell me about your first National: My first national was a little rough. First moto I got a bad start, came around the first lap in 29th and worked my way up to 16th. Second moto got worse. I was in the first turn pileup with Townley and a few other guys. I came around the first lap in 38th and worked my way up to 18th and made a couple mistakes with a few laps to go and ended up 20th and 20th overall. Tell me about your number 529: Well I’ve known the Barto family since around 1999 or so, and I always talked to Johnny and Wyatt. Well, Wyatt passed away a few years ago, and he looked up to me, and with the Foundation 529 I thought I’d try to give back to the people that have helped me get to where I am. So I asked Johnny if I could use the number, and he was shocked and told me he’d be honored if I used the number. When I sent my info in for my pro card, I didn’t know if I’d get the number or not, but then I got an e-mail a few weeks before Steel City, and they accepted it. My national number was 529, and I was stoked. I’m glad Johnny let me use the number; I was honored to run that number at my first national, so thanks Johnny. Anyone else you want to thank: My mom, dad, mechanic 5, and my trainer Tim Ferry.

Foundation 529 Fundraiser By: MRA - September 25, 2010

Foundation 529 – keeps the memory of Wyatt Barto alive.

Six bands came out as part of the festivities.

In late August, we found ourselves at the First Annual Foundation 529 Fundraiser and pig roast. This event was held at the Fredericksburg Fireman’s Field in memory of Wyatt Barto and to benefit Foundation 529 and the work they do. A $20 ticket got you all the food and drink you could handle and six of the best bands that I’ve heard in a while. All proceeds went to the foundation to help support their efforts. Foundation 529 was formed a few years ago after the unfortunate passing of Wyatt due to a motorcycle accident. Their goal is to protect and educate youth riders and their families. They work with companies like Arai helmets to properly fit and make aware to the public the importance of having the proper protective gear, how to maintain it and to make sure it fits right. The foundation is out at many local events to work with the Shirley fell apart on Steve the racers, and each time out they’ll donate protective gear to a youth day of the fundraiser. rider or riders that they feel needs it the most. They are fully nonprofit, and they raise money from apparel sales, memorial rides and fundraisers like this evening. In addition, businesses and individuals can donate to help support the cause. John and Shelly Barto asked me to thank the over 250 ticketholders that attended their fundraiser and all the people and businesses that have supported them to date. They have a few events yet this season but will be out in full swing in 2011 to help continue this great cause. If you feel you can help, please send a donation to Foundation 529, P.O. Mid Atlantic Dirt Track Series: Final Round 8 of 8

PA/MD Short Track Mason Dixon Fairgrounds - Delta, PA Sept. 11, 2010 - By Len & Ben Breech

Winsett Wins Pair at Delta ST

high off four on the next to last lap, giving Smith some breathing room. Results: 40 +:

By Len & Ben Breech

Rick Winsett borrowed a pair of bikes to score a pair of wins as the Baltimore Trail Riders held what was to be the next to last round of their Mid-Atlantic Short Track Series at the Mason Dixon Fairgrounds, but Mother Nature put the clinkers to next day’s event with rain overnight. That the event ran was a tribute to the determination of the maintenance crew, who gradually made the track raceable. It seems there was a “communication problem” between club members that had double the water put on the track, causing a very soft surface that looked almost like a motocross track after practice. With his normal booming Rotax not competitive on this small of a track, Winsett borrowed Don Mullen Sr.’s Honda for the 30 + class. In the heat he had to work hard for the win after taking

Open A: 1st, (71) Donnie Mullen; 2nd, (26X behind 71) John Olmstead; 3rd, (42E) Kayl Kolkman

soil samples in the opening turn. In the final, he got a better start, leading Chris “Crash” Hathaway, Albert Cook, and Wade Blevins. Hathaway stayed close for a few laps, until he lived up to his nickname in the fourth turn on the fourth lap. Winsett then put it on cruise control for over a straight margin. After his “parts bin” 250 proved less than competitive in practice, he was loaned Anthony Crabbe’s Suzuki. While using the heat race to get familiar with the machine, he battled with Colton Smith for

85: 1st, (15) Cameron Smith; 2nd, (1NE) Brandon Price

250 Sportsman: 1st, (38) Rick Winsett; 2nd, (32) Colton Smith

the win in the 250 Sportsman class. In the final, Smith took the lead from Winsett, Samantha Bergman, Joey Alexander and Matt Langrehr. Winsett took the lead off two on the second lap, but Smith stayed close the entire distance. Smith had earlier taken the 125 and 250 B finals. After having a problem passing Jason Cole in the previous 125 race two weeks previous, Smith nailed the start and set the pace over Cole, Sean Simmons and Jeff Standiford. Cole stayed close in the early laps, but Smith pulled several lengths ahead. In the 250, Smith checked out on his Triple J Stables/Don’s Kawasaki sponsored Kawasaki with Anthony Crabbe, Bergman and Langrehr fighting for second. With Bergman breathing down his neck, Crabbe hit his marks the entire distance to hold her off for second. Crabbe came back in the Open B final to take the lead from Greg Lerch, Mike Sponseller Jr., Kevin Bills and Blevins. Crabbe put a little distance on the Lerch/ Bills/Sponseller battle for second. They were very close, and on the final lap Bills tried to get under Lerch into three, but fell. With the National circuit in Minnesota this weekend, some pros stayed closer to home and attended this event. While not local, one was Henry Wiles’ singles

mechanic, John Olmstead, who was staying with one of his sponsors, Don’s Kawasaki. He looked very quick in his heat win, but in the final he came up against the other heat winner and absolute local master of these small ovals, Donnie Mullen. Mullen put his Shenandoah Honda/Miller Racing Honda in front of Olmstead, Kayl Kolkman, Cory Strickler and Cory Texter. Mullen put a few lengths on the others as they ran the twelve lap final quickly. Karl Wheeler pulled a surprise lead at the start of the 65 final over Zack Kolsovsky, Brandon Price and Chris Thomas. At the end of the first lap, Kolsovsky got by Wheeler as he began to drift back. After trying to get under Kolsovsky for a few laps, Price used a power move to go around on the outside entering three on the fifth lap. After a poor start, Nathan Reichert sliced his way into third by the end of the fifth lap. Price got a poor start in the 85 final, gating last behind Cameron Smith, Ken Kolsovsky Jr., Chase Smith, Reichert and Price. Reichert fell in turn two on the third lap, while Price sliced his way to third on the back straight of the fourth lap. He used his outside move to take second off two on the fifth lap. He was close to Cameron on the closing laps, but drifted

and a list of prizes just as big. Jack Rogers, being the first annual winner, got to take home his own version and will get to keep the main cup for one year until he passes on the trophy to the next racer or defends his title. The main trophy will have each year’s winner’s name inscribed on the plate. The entire day was a huge success, and running both tracks gave spectators a lot of great action to watch. I always enjoy my time at Rocket Raceway because Mark and Shelly Carlton always put together a quick program and make sure you leave with a smile. Chris Higgins pulled together outstanding sponsors like non-industry, corporate sponsor Sheetz, who provided gas cards; Best Buy, who provided the winners with brand new iPod Shuffles; Bedford Motorsports with race gas and bike mats; and Transworld also came on board with 20 free yearly subscriptions! Inaugural Allegheny Cup winner Jack Rogers

#99 Camden Witterright races the Rocket.

By: Ashley Boyan Sunday, September 19th, marked the 1st Annual Allegheny Cup at Rocket Raceway. The inaugural event was a race for 50cc riders, with the goal in mind to highlight future hopeful champions. Rocket also held a race for big bikes; however, the cup was held on a separate fifty track that also ran off of the main gate. The cup was comprised of four classes with an eight-laps-per-moto format. The weather could not have been more perfect, with crystal clear blue skies, and the track was fresh with groomed dirt. After practice commenced, Open A was first to hit the track, with Dustin Kendall #587 taking the first moto win. The first gate was also combined with B, and Yamaha rider Randy White #126 took the win and the eventual overall. In the third moto, 250 C, Scott Lauver #902 gave a solid fist pump after taking the checkers. Robert Semelsberger on a Cobra took the 65cc 7-9 class with Gauge Keith in tow in second place. The 50 cc Class Two had 17 entries! For Class Four (4-8), Kohl Felio #190 was the first 50cc to take a win and

ended up with the overall 1-1-2, crossing the finish with a sweet one-footer. In Class One (4-6) stock there was a great battle between Corey Passieu #85 and Dominic Amilcare #2, and Corey passed for the win and continued

on his streak all afternoon. Gauge Keith came out of the gate with a holeshot and was able to hold off Jack Rogers to win the last moto of the three, but it was Jack Rogers who brought home the bacon with the trophy half his size

of other prizes like a 19-inch TV, portable DVD player, MP3 players, and 60 packages of Oil Dri were also given away in a drawing. The entire prize and sponsor list can be found at Alleghenycup.com.

Fall is my favorite season of the year. There’s just something about those crisp, cool mornings followed by a sunny, comfortable afternoon of racing. Although the weather has cooled off just a bit, thank God the MAMA races at Budds Creek Motocross Park haven’t! This weekend brought us race #13 of the season. The sponsors - RPM Graphics, Pete’s Cycle, and Cycle Effects - contributed the awards and motivation, keeping the riders focused. We have just a few races to go before the season comes to a close, and I’m not sure about you, but for me, it’s a long winter without motocross racing. The Budds Creek crew, as always, had the track prepped and ready to go, making it a truly perfect weekend of racing. On behalf of a picture perfect weekend, I thought I’d highlight those riders that had a perfect day by going 1-1:

A Perfect Fall Weekend

Christ Peace be with you,

I come to you from the Chaplain’s Corner of this month’s wonderful publication, The MRA magazine. I have been in and out of many districts this year and have had the opportunity to be involved in some great racing and meet some wonderful families. I am so proud of the families I have met and the friends I have made this year. The message they keep coming to us with is they would like to hear more of God’s word at the local motocross events. I have been so moved this year to honor that request in the MAMA series of racing. My family and I have been to over 10 of their events this year and provide chapel service on Saturday evenings at 7 p.m. before the next day’s event. My wish is to extend this to other series that need to hear the word of God. I believe that we can reach many of you without having to sacrifice our wonderful sport of motocross. As we all know, motocross is a very dedicated sport, and I know you all are very dedicated. That is why I am here to inform you of some great news. You can race on Sunday and still honor the Sabbath (God’s Holy Day). We can still show him our love and dedication for everything he has done for us and still race. Is that not awesome news to hear? The Sabbath is by definition Saturday and is for the purpose of honoring God. So I would like to challenge you to be as dedicated to God as you are to this wonderful sport of ours, motocross. Come to Saturday night chapel services and be blessed. If I have learned anything in this sport, it is the need for protection, and God provides that. If Saturday nights at 7 p.m. does not work for you, then have no fear for the Sabbath is truly any day when we come together to hear the word of God and be blessed by it. So pick up your Bible and read or plug in during the week with a local church near you. The Sabbath is when you take that blessing or what you learned and go out and share it with others. So we can, if we choose, honor the Sabbath everyday, even on race weekends. So with that being said, Motocross for Christ is teaming up with some really great people for 2011 to help provide chapel services at D6 and MAMA events for next year. If you are in a race series and do not have the opportunity to here God’s word, let us know, and we will try with God’s help to provide someone for Saturday or Sunday services. Seth Walker races in the 60 C division.

The most wonderful experience you will ever come to know is when you come to know Christ. Isaiah 40:31- For those whose hope is in the Lord will renew their strength, they will sore on wings of an eagle, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not become faint. I leave you with this, May the Peace of the Lord be with you and keep you and your family always.

Pagoda MC and Sleepy Hollow MX - Birdsboro, PA Sept 18, 2010 -

By MRA

Cole Bader is your 50cc (4-6) Stock Champion.

For 2010, Pagoda MC in Birdsboro, PA, and Sleepy Hollow MX in Fredericksburg, PA, teamed up to form the Mainline Series. The concept was to include four races from each facility to see who the fastest racers from their neck of the woods might be. This allowed racers who didn’t want to travel

too far a chance to race closer to home while still testing their skills against some of the best in the business. For 2010, the series was sponsored by HJC Helmets, Ephrata Cycle and Sports, Bryant Racing Development and Boyesen Engineering. All who participated received a year-end award,

All class champions were awarded HJC helmets from Series Sponsor Sullivan Brothers.

Light refreshments were provided for the crowd.

Chris Major takes two class wins in 2010.

with class champions earning a new HJC helmet. Plans are already in the works for the 2011 series, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever. Check out either of the tracks’ websites or stay tuned to the pages of MRA for all of the upcoming details.

Kyle Novak claims the 85cc (9-11) C class title.

Jordo Baldridge retires in 2010 with a 25 Plus A championship.

Round #7 - PAMX

Doublin Gap MX Park - Sept 26, 2010 Late September brought the racers of western PA east to the Doublin Gap Motocross Park. It was round # 7 of the PAMX Fly Racing PA State Championship Series. This series is unique because it holds races in the geographic regions of both AMA District 5 and 6 and gives racers an opportunity if they like to see who a real state champion may be in each individual class. Many times races are billed as State Championship races but only consist of that race on that particular day. I’ve always wondered how anybody could be considered a State Champion by only winning one race against a select group of individuals who decided to show up on that particular day, anybody with me? Anyhow, the Senior A and B groups would kick off this round followed by the Open D and 25-Plus racers. Locals Brad Stepp and Jeremy Cook would notch wins in 40 + A and 25 + A with PAMX racers Martin Fake winning 40 + B and Alex Eskins winning the Open D (no jumping) class. Up next where the teeny weeny guys of the 50cc Oil Injected class followed by the bar banging action of 250 C. There were great battles all day long, from the minis right up through the expert divisions. Local expert rider Broc Schmelyun would shine on this day, but many of these same guys will be back to this same venue to try and track Schmelyun down for the Triple Crown Shootout in Late October. Matter of fact, you can see those results elsewhere in this issue. Check out today’s results here, and to get caught up with all the final point standings for this great series, log on to www.gopamx.com. To check out race images from today’s event, go to www.jimbullphoto.com.

Pagoda Motorcycle Club 3rd Annual Big Bucks Weekend Oct. 9-10, 2010 -

Early October brought summer-like temperatures and close to 300 racers to the Pagoda Motorcycle Club for their 3rd Annual Big Bucks weekend. This year’s event was again title sponsored by VPE Racing and Ray’s Yamaha Polaris. In addition, companies like 662 Motorsports, Twin Air, MGX Unlimited and Montgomeryville Cycle Center donated to the cause. The list goes on to include JR’s Cycles, KB5 and GPMX. As a matter of fact, with just a walk through the pits, the racers and their families themselves got involved and donated cash for holeshot awards totaling well over $300. What an event! Expert classes paid out back to 10 spots, and if my math is right there was close to $4,000 plus 120 % payout - no wonder the racing Peters has established himself as the was so intense. It gives a whole new meaning to amateur class racer to beat in D6. bar banging. Holeshot awards and giveaways were also won by amateur and youth classes alike, and a podium was constructed for the winners to strengths and take both moto victories for the O/A followed by local Ryan Zimmerman in second and get their five minutes of fame. The weekend began with an open practice day NC rider Ryan Zimmer in third. Every class had great battles this weekend, on Friday, followed by a full schedule of racing on Saturday. Saturday night brought the welcoming and you can check both days’ results here. Pagoda atmosphere with a live band in their clubhouse. Sunday brought a separate day of 10-09-10 Pagoda Race Results racing with lots of Big Bucks for the experts and 70, 80, 90, 110 Mini Track: 1) Damien Sprague 2) Matthew Sierocinski fun for all. Hoffman The guy that was really charging, however, was 3) Jason Shahan 4) Richard J. Carragher local Pro Expert Dustin Kendall, who was near the 5) James D. Munch 6) Craig M. Futer fourth by lap four, with his sights set on the leaders. In the end it would be Spangler with the win, followed by Zimmer and Kendall with Ronnie Stewart and Garret Toth rounding out the top five. Moto number two again found the # 360 machine of Cook grabbing the holeshot by half a wheel, but this time Spangler and Kendall were both in the front of the pack. Spangler would quickly move into first with Zimmer and Kendall battling for second. On the downhill right before the finish, Open A riders competed at Pagoda on Sunday, Zimmer would slip up, allowing with Lowell Spangler sweeping the class. Kendall the opening he needed to slip by to secure second O/A for the day. Back in the pack, the Open C: racing was intense, as all present definitely have 1) Fred C. Our Trip To The MXONS 2010 MX Of Nations

Sept. 25-26, 2010 Now that airlines also charge your bags to fly, packing for a short trip with only carry-on luggage can prove to be a challenge for anyone. If the last time you flew was when you were your son’s age, believe me when I tell you, the rules have changed. After removing our shoes and sending our bags through the scanner, we were pulled aside for an additional search. I thought Randy was going to blow a gasket after he received his scolding about the three-ounce rule for gels and liquids from the 135 pound when dripping wet senior security guard. “Dude, it’s only toothpaste” was really not the correct response on Randy’s part. Luckily, we didn’t provoke him enough for security to insist on a strip search. After this initial half-hour, the rest of the flight was smooth sailing. In Denver we met up with Richie, who had a direct flight from Philadelphia, and picked up our rental car. The weekend had officially begun. Our hotel was only 20 minutes from the track. By 9 a.m. Saturday morning we were at the track ready to cruise the pits, check out the track layout, and examine the condition of the dirt. The dirt was unbelievable. Ask Randy to show you; it was that nice he had to bring some home with him. The scene was set. With the multiple elevation changes and the huge jumps, practice was really fun to watch. The guys on the 450’s had no trouble with the 120 foot table top and clearing the 140 foot quad. Oh, and I failed to mention that while the Northeast was waste high in rain, we were in sunny 80 degree weather with a nice breeze blowing all day and not a cloud in the sky. Ok, enough gloating, back to practice. Qualifiers were run Saturday afternoon for Sunday’s gate pick. In the first moto, Dungey, riding for USA, was pushed wide and came out of the first turn around 26th. Antonio Cairoli, riding for Italy, pulled the holeshot and ran away with the moto. No one came close to Cairoli; he was flying on his KTM 350. Dungey managed to ride his way back to fourth place. Canard, riding for USA, was in the second

qualifying moto. It looked like Canard with the holeshot was going to have it easy until the next thing we knew he was caught by a German rider on a Suzuki. Everyone wanted to know, “Who is this guy?” Well it was 16- year-old Ken Roczen, and he was hauling the freight to catch Canard. He not only caught Canard, he passed and pulled away. Canard got a second wind, and the battle began with one lap to go. Roczen was leading with Canard all over him. Roczen loses his front wheel on an off camber left turn and goes down with half a lap to go. Canard gets the win. Next it was Short’s turn to show what he’s got. He gets the holeshot and never looks back until after he has taken the win. The only rider near him was secondplace rider Ben Townley, riding for New Zealand. The stage is now set for the big race tomorrow. Sunday, we are back at the track again by 9 a.m. We have a great spot to watch from the hillside. The perfect weather conditions of yesterday are back with a slight increase in temperature, low 90s expected today. The lines cut in the dirt from yesterday’s qualifiers have shaped the track for today’s events. The first moto of the day provides Dungey a chance to better his fourth-place finish of yesterday. This time when the gate drops, Dungey gets the holeshot and Cairoli is in tow. For a short time we get to see the best American and the European rider go at it. Trying to hang with Dungey, Cairoli came up short on the 140-foot

quad section on his underpowered 350. He later stated that he almost broke his neck when he bounced his chest off the crossbar and knocked the wind out of himself while Dungey rode for the win. Short and Canard were in the second moto. Short took the holeshot with Ben Townley running in second. Townley was on fire, tearing up the track to catch Short. Once he caught Short, the battle began. With the blink of an eye, Short was on the ground and not getting up. Townley had just cleaned his clock; Short’s arm was hurt, and his clutch lever broken off. After the initial surprise, Short was able to get back up and get going again. He was way back in the pack with no clutch, riding his butt off, but was able to pick up enough spots to claw his way to 13th. Townley went on for the win. You ask, “What happened to Canard?” Well, he went down in the first turn but was able to catch back up to finish 7th. Going into the final moto, with Germany in first place, things were not looking good for the United States. The pressure was on Dungey and Short for the last moto. The U.S. was behind by five points. When the gate dropped, it was Short with the holeshot, followed by Dungey in second and Townley right with them in third. Dungey caught Short and applied pressure, Short waved him by knowing he could not run the pace with Dungey. It was a different story for Townley, the battle was on again. This time it was Townley who went down while trying to go on the inside of Short. That was a close one. Townley pulled off after two more laps, and Dungey and Short went on cruise control while the Euros battled behind them. The crowd went crazy for the last three laps, knowing that it was going to be another win for the USA. There is something really cool about 60,000 fans going nuts, waving the flag from the country that they are there to support for the weekend. The final results were USA in first; Belgium, second; and Germany, third. My vote for the most impressive rider was for the 16-year-old German, Ken Roczen. He has signed a deal to ride supercross for 2011 in the United States. He will then return to Europe for the outdoor GP season. He is fast and has great style. All in all, it was a great trip with good company and perfect weather. See you at the races – Bob Schuler, Total Two Wheel Training USA is still # 1.
