Happy Halloween everybody, this is one of my favorite months of the year.

The spooky day is coming; we get to dress up in costumes and scare the crap out of each other, and don’t forget the candy. Lots and lots of chocolate, Yeah !! The down side of that is that winter is right around the corner and that means the racing season will be coming to an end here in our neck of the woods, wouldn’t it be great if we could just fast forward to February and start all over again.

Anyhow, we’re down to four rounds of the D-6 Championship Series for bikes and two rounds for the ATV’s. This will be a big subject that will be discussed at the upcoming District Motocross Meeting on October 16th. I encourage everyone to attend this meeting, all of the promoters will be there and the meeting is open to anyone. This is where they determine how the point series will be run for next year and who’s running what machines and so on and so fourth. I know a lot of people aren’t happy with the way a lot of things are done; this is your chance to come out and be heard. You gotta show up if you want anything to happen. Check the upcoming event schedule in this issue for times and location.

The PA State Hare Scramble Series is coming to an end as well, there is one event left at the Dutchmen where they will be giving an ATV away. That series was supported through MSR / Answer Racing this year and there will be a ton of great giveaways at their banquet in November. The D-6 Hare Scramble Series runs thru the end of November.

I’d like to thank everyone for your support this year. We do have two more issues left to do after this one but I know a lot of you are cutting back on the number of races you’re attending and some of the tracks are wrapping up their schedules for the season. We hope all of you have enjoyed reading our issues and as always we are looking for suggestions on what you’d like to see in these pages.

We do it for you, and to eat, but the main reason is we love the races and to eat.

If you can support us thru a subscription or advertisement or if you can contribute a story or pictures about a race we thank you. Most of all we thank you for doing business with the advertisers in MRA, let them know you appreciate them for supporting your sport.

Ride: Suzuki RM 65 District#: 7 D Experience: 3rd Year Racing Class: 65cc 7-9 Hobbies: Bicycling Sponsors: Mom & Dad MRA would like to feature Daryn Thompson as this months Holeshot Hotshot. We caught up with Daryn at Sleepy Hollow last month and he pulled the holeshots in both of his motos against some of the best riders in the business. Daryn’s dad Brian approached me between motos and asked if I had seen Daryn get the holeshot against Nik Desiderio in the first moto? Desiderio is one of the top riders in the nation in this division, he generally finishes in the top 10 at most major events and he did win a National this spring in Texas against 90 other riders in this class. Anyone that can get a holeshot on him is really doing something. I congratulated Daryn and told him to go for it again. In the second moto the field came to the line, Daryn was toward the inside with Desiderio lining up to the outside. The gate dropped and Daryn did do it again, not only did he grab his second holeshot of the day, he also raced to the overall victory in the class.

Wow, what an accomplishment. The following week at the same track Daryn was at it again, grabbing holeshots and winning motos. This time he was able to grab the holeshot and lead the race from start to finish. Keep an eye on this young racer, I’m sure in the years to come you’ll be able to find him on many podiums. And keep an eye out next month, who knows you just might end up being the next MRA Holeshot Hotshot.

All I can say is for the older kids to watch out, Chase will be moving up to the 65 class next year and I’m sure he’ll be looking to show you veterans what he’s made of. MRA would like to wish Chase and his family the best in their racing efforts. And be sure to watch out next month, maybe you will be the next MRA Hare Scramble Hotshot.

Foot of Mountain Hare Scramble

September 4-5, 2004

Foot of the Mountain held their first fall hare scramble of the year over Labor Day Weekend hosting Round # 8 of the BP Promotions PA State Hare Scramble Series as well as a tasty chicken barbecue on Saturday night. The event was sponsored by Deep Run Plumbing in Hampstead, MD., and was probably one of the first events ever at this facility when they could have used a water truck. The Foot of the Mountain crew and racers has battled Mother Nature ever since they’ve started racing here. This weekend would be different with moderate temperatures and no rain during or before the event.

In Saturday racing action Ryan Rodgers from Dover, PA grabbed the early lead and led in to the checkers. Rodgers was riding a KTM and was racing on the front line in the 200 / Open A Division.

In ATV action, national # 2 Chris Borich did a carbon copy performance of Rodgers, grabbing the holeshot and leading it to the end. Borich is mounted on the Honda TRX 450R this year and is riding out of the East Coast ATV camp.

In the youth classes, Suzuki rider Jason Sipe took the overall race win riding in the 100 Two Stroke class with Shawn Kozak getting the checkers in the 110 Air Cooled division.

In 70cc quad action, Derrec Robinson continues his winning ways with Haydn Wolpert taking the win in the 50cc group.

Round # 8 of the State Series was run Andrew Katrina on Sunday with a great rider turnout. MRA finishes 2nd on was not able to attend this portion of the Saturday in the race.

A few of the riders were able to 65cc 7-9 Group. repeat their victories from Saturday but there were some surprise winners in a few Michael Shaud of the classes. Check the results here to see grabs a 2nd in how your favorite racer did.

2004 AMA Chevrolet Motocross Championship Season Recap

Wow, what a season ! It’s been another record shattering year at the outdoor Nationals. We’ve seen two men totally dominate their respective divisions and they have both raised the bar for other racers to shoot for in the future. In the 250 ranks Ricky Carmichael has run another perfect season for Honda, RC was the first man to accomplish the feat in 2002 and has repeated in 2004 coming off a major injury. RC has definitely raised the bar for his competitors, the thing is, Ricky will be back with Team Suzuki in 2005 and with his talent and determination, who knows what the next record may be.

Let’s talk about the other record breaker of 2004, James “Bubba” Stewart. Stewart in 3 seasons has broken RC’s record of the most 125 National Career Wins. Bubba won 23 of 24 motos this season on his KX125 on his way to the record. He broke it at Steel City at 27 total, then went to Glen Helen and jumped on a four stroke 250 and still obliterated the competition. Next year Stewart will be back with Kawasaki, only on a 250 this time. It could get interesting.

How about it, is there a new “Golden Boy” ? Team Suzukis Broc Hepler, named after the Yamaha sensation of the early eighties Broc Glover has managed to put together an incredible first full year in the pro ranks.

Hepler, just 18 years old from Western PA coming off of his spectacular second place finish in the 125 East Supercross Series has repeated in the outdoor nationals with a convincing second place ranking. This feat earned him the AMA Supercross/Motocross Rookie Of The Year Award. Watch for Broc to be among the frontrunners for the 2005 season.

Then there was the new kid. Whether you like him or not, Mike Alessi has finally arrived on the scene.

Alessi has probably been the most talked about amateur ever, he made his debut at Millville right after securing a few more wins at Lorettas where he tied James Stewarts record for most Amateur National wins of 11. Alessi had his share of struggles at Millville but kept his chin up and put in an impressive third overall at Steel City in the 250 class. Watch for Mike to compete next year in the 125 class, he’ll be campaigning the new KTM 250 four stroke.

Then the King came to town, Jeremy McGrath showed up at Steel City on a 450 Honda. This was MC’s first national appearance since May of 2000. MC had his share of challenges as well, getting caught in a major pileup at the start of moto one, then in the second moto while running in the top 10 Jeremy experienced some mechanical trouble on the big Honda that would end his day. The crowd loved to see MC back in action and Jeremy was able to retain his national number 2 for the upcoming 2005 supercross season where he will compete in select events for Honda.

I’ll say it again, Wow ! what a year. I can’t wait to next season, the match ups will be hot. Carmichael, Stewart and lets not forget the reining 2004 Supercross champ, Chad Reed. How about the 125 division, can Hepler fill Stewarts shoes and what will Alessi and the Mike Alessis much anticipated arriv- likes of Matt Walker or Davi Millsaps have to say about that. Stay al to the Pro Ranks came as expect- tuned, the action will be red hot and you’ll be able to catch it right ed with many ups and downs. here in the pages of MRA. Jim Bull MRA

Foot of Mountain September 4th & 5th, 2004

The sun does shine at Foot of the Mountain. I was beginning to think it rained year round in Neelyton Pa. It was a beautiful Labor Day weekend at the Foot of the Mountain track. The sun was shining and the track was perfect. The parking area was full of racers and campers anxiously awaiting the start of the weekends activities. The races started Saturday with the youth and adult bike races followed by the ATV race.

Much of the course was run in reverse from previous races which caught a lot of the racers off guard. The ATV race on Saturday had 20 entries. Chris Borich and his brother Jarred Borich both took wins in the A and B classes. Brian Braughler piloted his Cannondale to an impressive victory in the C class on Saturday while being chased by second place finisher Tim Wertman. Randy Brandt walked away from the Vet class and put several laps between himself and second place. Jeff Kearney took another easy win in the Senior class after rival Randy Smith had mechanical problems. In the 0-230 class Karl Lehman took the win. The track was brutal, very rocky, and best of all there was little to no mud!

Sundays weather was no different, clear skies and a cool breeze. This was Rd. # 8 of the Pa. State Harescramble series so attendance was up from Saturdays race. The A class was full of action Sunday, Chris Borich rocketed off of the starting line on his Honda while the rest of the field was left in the dust. As the dust cleared Lee Dickerson and Jarred McLure were left in the first turn. It seems the two riders were bidding on the same piece of real estate and both ended up on there lids. Dickerson was not able to continue, McLure needed repairs but was able to get going after a few minutes. As the race continued, Rob Hertz worked his way through the pack and set his sites on Borich. By lap two Hertz had caught Borich, the two racers hooked up and pulled nearly an entire lap on 3rd by the end of the race. Todd Rothermel and I were battling for the 3rd spot on the track for nearly 3 laps. After a great battle on Saturday we were both really fatigued and I was having trouble holding on in all the rocks! McLure put in an unbelievable ride and came out of know where on the last lap to take over the 3rd position. In the end Rothermel claimed 4th with myself in 5th.

Mike Lucas finished 6th and Mark Thompson was 7th.

In the B class Keith Appleby put the moves on second place finisher Craig Sullivan to take a win. Jason Negley finished 3rd, Mac Magee finished 4th and a hard charging Mike Flemming finished 5th with an impressive fastest lap of

the class! The C class posted the most entries of any class on Sunday. The points battle is heating up here with 4 or 5 guys consistently finishing well.

Ron Dernoski and Tim Wertman have been there all year placing well and consistent. As the season rolls on though its Owen Kapalski and Bryan Braughler that have been stealing the show. Owen has steadily moved up in points in the last 6 events and has been the only consistent winner all year.

He may be the dominant rider in the class but he’s not in the points lead yet! Bryan Braughler has also been stepping it up lately. He has finished progressively better in each race this season. This race on Sunday was basically a small version of the big points battle in the C class. Owen Kapalski, Bryan Braughler, Ron Dernoski, Jamie Bougher and Tim Story By: Jason & Jacob Hughes Wertman all battled within seconds of each other.

As the race went on Kapalski pulled a small lead, Braughler passed Dernoski for second Bougher finished 4th and Wertamn finished 5th.

Marshall Eldridge took a big win in the 0-230 class. Michael Bataglia finished second, Mike McQuade finished third followed by Jason Connelly. Saturdays winner Karl Lehman had mechanical problems that held him back to 5th for the day. Our Vet. class standout Randy Brandt had another awesome run taking the win and finishing 4th overall. Brian Shimkanon finished second with David Bishop in third. Former points leader Chad Kirby finished 4th followed by Jason Bougher in fifth. Jeff Kearney took home yet another victory in the Senior class over second place Lonnie Garlands. The auto sport guys were at it again as Bela Gombar chased George Richards all day long only to finish second. Gombar and Richards are always exciting to watch, they battle from flag to flag every race!

With the cancellation of Rd. 9 at Back Mountain, the Pa. State Series will resume on Oct. 10th at the Flying Dutchmen in Pine Grove Pa. Keep an eye out for reports in upcoming issues on the Rausch Fall Harescramble as well as the final round of the Pa State series.

5th ANNUAL PAUL CRUMLING MEMORIAL RACE Lewis Finally Takes Crumling Memorial

After being rated as the odds on favorite to win the previous two Shippensburg Speedway’s Paul Crumling Memorial race, 2004 Horizon Award winner, John Lewis shrugged off a painful groin injury from a heat race to finally added the one big race that has eluded him by taking the fifth annual version. The race is named for the late founder/owner of Pro Plates number plates, Paul Crumling who died from a rare blood disorder just one week after competing here in 1999. There are two main rules, 125s and up, and must never have held a pro license. The entrants were divided into four heats, taking two, with two semis each adding two more for the twenty lap race. In addition to winning the Crumling, Lewis also took three class wins, 450 and 600 A and a tight battle with Brandon Robinson in the Sportsman final that was a preview of the featured event.

Doug Reinert pulled a surprise in the 450 A, by grabbing the lead from Lewis and Dennis Flynn. After holding point for most of the race, Lewis found an opening and slipped under him off the second turn on lap six and pulled out to a ten yard margin. The 600 A was a romp as Lewis won by a straight over Wayne Wagner and Flynn. Lewis pulled out to an easy margin in the Sportsman final until a red flag at halfway caused a restart. For the remaining laps, Robinson stayed close to Lewis.

Lewis had the fastest heat on his Schaeffer’s H-D/Bromley’s Cycles/ABBA Heating Systems sponsored machine in the Crumling qualifiers and jumped into the lead over Robinson, R. J. Hart, Cory Texter and Evan Baer. Texter moved into third at the end of the first lap as Lewis and Robinson started to pull away. Flynn moved up to pressure Baer and took control of fifth on the eighth lap. The top five stayed constant for the rest of the race until the red flag came out for Baer falling on the eighteenth lap. Officials decided to call the race at this point.

In addition to runner-up finishes to Lewis, Robinson also took two wins in the 250 and 450 B classes. In the 250, he took the lead from Hart, Baer and Chris MacCarty.

MacCarty fell on the third lap, while Baer stayed close to Hart to the end of the race. In the 450 B final, the Robinson Electric sponsored Robinson bolted into the lead and increased it to a straight margin. Richard Heverly, Texter and Hart stayed close, with Jordan Harris getting by Hart for fourth on the final lap.

A companion event is the 100 Crumling race for XR 100 based machines and normally limited to youth riders. Patrick Jacobsen grabbed the lead right off the start from Shayna Texter, Cassidy Heiser, Ryan Connelly and Seth Valentin. Jacobsen pulled away while Texter took second off two on the second lap. Heiser retook the spot three laps later.

Jacobsen also easily took the 85 (7-11) division. He got by Brett Pugh at the start

of the second lap, Derek Hersh, Tyler Kidwell, Eric Schwartz and Max Harvat battled for third.

Kidwell took third on the fourth lap, setting the top five.

Todd Kendig again took the 30 + final with Dave Smith and Bob Sweeten staying close. Smith won the 500 2 Valve over Jim Chapman, Mark Stambaugh and Cory Texter.

Texter and Stambaugh traded third several times in the mid-part of the race, until Texter took it for good on the sixth lap. Stambaugh topped the 40 + group grabbing the lead from Chapman, Joe Dohm, Delaware Dave Smith and Mike Keane. Smith bobbled on the second lap letting Keane by. In the late laps, Keane pressured Dohm for third, but ran out of time.

Sleepy Hollow MX

D-6 points – September 6, 2004

Sleepy Hollow MX played host to round 15 of the District 6 Championship Points Series on Labor Day Monday. The race was sponsored by Ephrata Cycle and Sport and was a Fund Raiser for the St. Jude Childrens Hospital. Racers donated old trophies to be re-plated with Sleepy Hollow donating the money they saved on awards to St. Judes.

Various companies and sponsors donated merchandise to be raffled off with Ephrata Cycle donating a new Honda CRF50 to the cause. All total over $ 4000.00 was raised on the day. If you would like to learn more about St. Judes and how you may be able to help, log onto www.stjude.org.

Close to 600 racers showed up to compete for valuable district points as well as the extra $ 500.00 to win that Sleepy put up in the 250 Expert division. The class was stacked with talent and Sleepy extended the motos to 20 minutes in length. Casey Clark took the win in the first moto followed by Jeremy Cook and Clint Johnson. Of course, National Champion Jason Lawrence was on hand racing in the B division which was a stagger start. Lawrence worked his magic in both motos and passed everyone for the win in both classes, but he was not eligible for the points or the cash.

In the second moto both Clark and Cook ended up with DNF’s opening up the door for Gap Racings Eric Sebastian to take the moto win and the extra cash. There was a three way tie in points between Sebastian 5-1, Tyler Witmer 4-2, and Clint Johnson going 3-3. All had 6 points with Sebastian getting the win, a last lap pass on Johnson by Witmer was the determining factor.

Sleepy Hollow also ran their annual mechanics race at this event. MRA was not able to secure any photos from this particular moto. Our sources tell us the race was won by a new factory pilot wearing a bright pink leisure suit riding a top secret works bike from Suzuki. Anyone with photos or information about this particular occurrence, please contact us so we can report the incident accurately.

Well by now you’ve probably realized that the 4-stroke motorcycle is inevitably going to take over the motocross industry at some point. Nobody really knows exactly when. There’s some news that the 2- stroke will be confined to only closed course competitions, but when that is going to take place is still a mystery. Maybe the 4-stroke is less polluting to the air we breathe, but they are definitely not quieter. These things rattle windows if you ride them anywhere near civilization. Since we are all used to being in a noisy environment when riding or racing, we tend to not be bothered by the noise, but the rest of the population has always complained about the noise with the 2 strokes. They really have a loaded gun now that most of us are on thumpers.

Almost everybody I’ve talked to raves on and on about how easy a 4 stroke is to ride compared to a 2 stroke. It’s true. In most conditions, you can go faster on a 4 stroke. Many people don’t realize how much slower they are when going through corners. 4- strokes have more torquey, trackable power. You can get going faster – quicker. That’s why they feel faster. You can tiptoe through a corner then hammer down a straight faster than you would on a 2-stroke. If there is a rider who knows how to ride a 2 stroke well, then the guy on the 4-stroke doesn’t have as much of an advantage as you might think. Riding a 2- stroke is all about having good corner speed and momentum. You have to get through the corners faster to keep your momentum up for the straight-a-ways. Riding a 4-stroke 450 is a lot like riding a 500cc 2-stroke. You have to be smoother and more precise.

I remember when I was racing the 500 nationals. What a task it was for me to get off a 250 and on a 500. I would try to ride it like a 250 and that would get me nowhere. I had to keep telling myself to slow down and go faster. I couldn’t bomb into corners as fast, and I would have to set up more and ride smoother to go faster. I feel the same holds true with the 4-strokes.

I feel this way more so with the 450 than the 250. There recently was an article in a magazine that said you steer a 4-stroke with the front wheel and you steer 2-stroke with the back wheel. Boy, they got that one right. You can bomb into a corner on a 2-stroke too fast, be cross-rutted, basically out of control and still somehow get through with some grace. A 4-stroke wants to be led into the corner with a little more precision. Otherwise, you’ll blow the corner or come out like a hot potato.

Jumping a 4-stroke is a little different as well. You have that gyro effect that makes it harder to move in the air. Chopping the throttle off the face of a jump must be done a little bit more carefully. Otherwise, it will do that dreaded ker-klunk and stall in the air. Landing with a dead 4-stroke is always interesting. They don’t bump start quite as easily as a 2-stroke. I run a 2-stroke with no idle because I don’t like the over-rev in the corners and it’s easier to send off the jumps and get the right attitude for the landing. You can’t do that with 4-strokes. The bike needs to idle. This changes your cornering and sending the bike off the jumps. When cornering, it feels like somebody rushing you and messing up your timing. Sending it off the jumps with an idle makes you want to fly front end high.

A friend recently asked me what I thought was the best bike for his son who was getting ready to make the switch from the mini class to the big bikes. My answer was 2- stroke 125. Why…you may ask? I feel that starting the kids on 2-strokes is more beneficial to them for several reasons.

The main reason is because 125’s need to be ridden hard to go fast. Corners need to be attacked and momentum must be kept up. Otherwise you’re going to get passed. On a 4-stroke they won’t need to learn how to corner and carry speed near as much. That leaves room for laziness. If you have an event that you would like promoted please mail it to MRA. riding hard for the whole moto and trying to better themselves. Don’t get me wrong, being on a 125 won’t be easy because the main competition is 4-strokes. When they learn how to go hard and fast on a 125, imagine how much easier the switch will be to go to a 4-stroke. These kids need to do the work if they want to be champions. Don’t forget how much easier it is to start a 125 versus a 250F. Stalling the 4 stoke might be the end of the moto.

2-stroke… probably not.

I started racing in 1980, raced national’s from ’87 to ’97 and am still not done learning how to make my 450 go faster. Now, I’m not going to say that I don’t like the 450, but god…I miss the 2 stroke. As a matter of fact, I think my next bike wants to be one.
