Graphic Design Stuff Happens

I’ve always believed that change is good. So many times you here people say “If it ain’t broke - don’t fix it”. Can you imagine still riding your 1982 CR, YZ 250, etc, etc. Wow, they were great bikes back then, but no comparison to what we have today. How do you think your 13 year old would like landing the bonzai at Sleepy Hollow on an XR75, not! Anyhow we’ve currently made some changes. Some may be permanent and some may not. So let’s start with the maybe permanent one. MRA was started many years ago, it was a small newsletter that covered racing in District 6. The owner covered a few races, sold a few ads and gave it away for free at the local tracks.

As time progressed and MRA grew, we were covering more races, selling more ads and people wanted to buy subscriptions. Then two years ago, MRA became part of either your MDRA or your District 6 memberships. Some people liked that and I believe some people didn’t. So for 2008 we will be changing back and becoming an all free publication once again. We’ll need to sell even more ads, but it keeps more money in the organizations and it keeps all things level for all readers. Watch our pages in the coming months and our website as well. We will list distribution sites so you know where to get your copy. The coverage won’t change, just the way you get it. I would like to thank all those that have supported us with paid subscriptions over the years and we hope that you keep on reading MRA. Next change is our scrap book theme in this issue and I imagine this will change from month to month. In this issue of MRA we decided to remove most results and fill our pages with more pictures and captions. This lets more people get in, so to speak and lets us look more than read. Who wants to read anyhow? We can do that in school. Don’t fear, you can log onto our website to check out the results at www. mcracingaction.com and if you can, please give us some feedback on both of these issues in the new MRA Blog. Until next time - Jim Bull, MRA

on the cover Robert Celani has a huge get off at DMX on Labor Day Sunday!

Nutrition & Fitness Attention: Rec Rider Subscribers You may be wondering why there has been no recreational content in the last two issues. In February of 2007 we began a new project within the pages of MRA called “Rec Rider”. We believed that we could have an impact on the recreational off road riding scene in addition to the sanctioned racing that we cover. Although there was great support from a few key individuals, there was not enough to continue to pursue the endeavor. Effective immediately we will discontinue any print efforts to this project. We will however attempt

to keep the website online to list riding areas and other pertinent info as available at: www. recrider.com. We thank those that supported us and apologize that we can no longer make Rec Rider available to you. If you bought a subscription from us and would like a pro rated refund, please contact us at (717) 464 -5381 or by email at: mcracing@comcast.net. Thank you.

kids when racing in the oil injected division. Zach also does real well in the stock class. The younger kids don’t normally catch the older leaders there but I tell you what. If you read a few back issues you’ll understand it when I say some of the best racing each and every weekend comes out of these 4-6 year old divisions. There are a handful of kids that are really smoking and not to push things along, but I can’t wait to see them on the bigger bikes. Zach currently sets in a solid third place in the 50cc (4-6) division and will most likely finish the series there. Zach leads the 50cc Oil Injected (4-6) class by 15 points with only one event remaining. It’s still up for grabs with Seth Hammaker, # 2 finisher at Lorettas right behind him with Nathan Murphy only a point behind in third. Watch as the season winds down, it’s sure to be an exciting finish and any of these young hotshots are capable of winning. Also watch as # 14, Zach Lahman moves into the 7-8 divisions for next season. My bet is that there are a whole bunch of kids wishing that he wasn’t coming. Stay tuned next month, who knows who is going to be the next MRA Hotshot. Maybe It’ll be you!! Jim Bull MRA

Well, as you know by now, we’ve been designating Hotshots from different categories this season and we’ve finally gotten around to the MDRA Race Series. I’ve had my eye on this young man all season. Many times the gates are split for the 7-8 year olds with the 46 year old riders coming off the second gate. Many times, this months hotshot Zach Lahman will leave on the second gate and within a lap will not only get out in front of his class but will catch and pass the older

Thru Jay’s Eyes

Mental Fitness For motocross racers, mental health and well roundedness may be the most important part to mastering their sport. This principle holds true for all sports and really anything you wish to do in, or accomplish in life. Another unique aspect to this principle is that what a healthy, well-rounded mental outlook is will be different to each individual. This simply means that the intentions of what you desire will dictate what you experience in life. If this in fact is true it makes every individual responsible for what happens to him or her in any given situation. This is because you made the decisions that have inevitably led to an experience. This simple yet extremely complex interaction is an easy way to understand existence, and just so happens to be a basic principle of quantum physics and quantum mechanics. As a universal observer, knowing and understanding that you control what happens to you is the key to having perfect mental health, which will dictate perfect physical health. If you are not in good mental health your physical health will decline, however if you are in good mental health you will always be ready to adapt to and surpass any obstacle if you truly want to. One of the first steps in balancing your mind is to sit back, relax and think about where you are in life and what you want to accomplish by racing motocross. Then think about your skill level as compared to the skill levels of other riders; from the worst one you know, to the best one you know. This will give you a practical and logical marker of where you are and what you are trying to accomplish by racing motocross. (Unless your ego is delusional and disproportionate) From this point you can then create logical and sensible ways to improve or retain your motocross abilities throughout life depending on what you

desire. The most important part about this is to remember to keep a balance between aspects of your life that you do not wish to decline because of excessive dedication to motocross. (unless that is what you want) An important thing to remember is sacrifices must be made to attain higher levels of skill and recognition in a field.

When it comes right down to it intention and attitude are what come together to dictate what you will experience and how you will react to it. If you realize this, and believe it, you will slowly understand how to dictate what you experience and how you react to the experience. This will ultimately lead to a greater understanding of existence and how this can be applied to make you happy and keep you healthy. True balance occurs when you stop riding over your head, but have absolute trust in yourself and your abilities, at this point anything is possible, and you will be amazed by what you are capable of.

Sunday August 19th found Round # 8 of the MDRA Race Series at the Doublin Gap MX Park just outside Shippensburg, PA. The day brought the faithful MDRA crowd and a batch of rainy weather which was much needed in the area. The heavy rain would eventually cause the races to cancel at the halfway point of the second set of motos. This was a monumental day for the folks who own the facility. Especially Rod Yentzer, for this would be the day that his son Chase competed in his first race. The Yentzers have been racing motocross in our region for many years, from the amateur level right on thru the pro ranks. They have owned Doublin now for I believe the last 8 or 9 years and they have devoted their lives to

this sport. I heard Rod say at a race a few weeks later, that he “had waited five years for this day to come”. Well the day has come and passed and I’ve seen Chase at a few races since and he seems to be getting better every week. I believe that we’ll see Chase grow with the MDRA Series just as his father and uncle grew up racing here and maybe one day he’ll be shooting for a pro ride in this great sport that we all love. We’ve taken a different approach to our race coverage in this issue of MRA. We’re calling it the “Scrap Book Issue” and we hope that you like it. So many times, many of the same riders get featured month after month, so we wanted to spread the love a bit and try and show you some

new faces. Find here a collection of racers pictures along with a listing of the days – class champions. If you would like to see the complete results, just log onto our website at: www. mcracingaction.com. There you can see all the results, not just the top ten and while you’re there be sure to check out the pictures from today’s event at MRA Photos. Doublin Gap’s next event will be their Awards Banquet on October 27 with the PA State Championship Series coming to town on Sunday the 28th. This event will mark a first in the area offering automated touch screen sign – up (see story opposite page). We’ll see you then.

Russ Justus and Josh Brown race 250 C.

Rod Yentzer, owner of Doublin Gap MX Park has been working with John Daines, founder of Trackside Software to develop an easy way for racers to get thru sign up. Let’s face it; most of us have stood in line a few times at the sign up shed. How nice will it be to be able to arrive at the track anytime of the day or night and go to a computer monitor and scan your AMA card, pick your classes then head off to your pit to do whatever it is you want to do? In the beginning you’ll still be required to report to a cashier at some point before the race begins but the system is in continual development and the hopes are to eventually only have one station to report to.

What this means is you can roll into the track the night before, there won’t be any more long lines coming thru the gate, no data cards to buy there. You find your pit area and at your convenience you head over to the sign up station, follow the instructions on the screen and bam you’re signed up. The computer, after your first time using the system will have all your data on file. You can then see the cashier anytime the morning of the race and pay for your selected classes. My bet is that in a short period of time this system will be able to eliminate the need for extra paperwork and employees. It should also be able to track your points and advancement and in the long run reduce costs for everybody. Make sure you’re a part of history. Attend Doublin Gap’s race on October 28th. It is part of the Team Green PA State Championship Series and offers contingencies from all of the major manufactures. We’ll see you there.

Round # 9 of the MDRA found us at Happy Ramblers second round of the series for 2007. Saturday brought killer temps and an open practice day. As I pulled into the pits I was surprised, I assumed the turnout would be down because of the heat, but boy was I wrong. The place was packed with the areas diehards looking to get more seat time in before the race on Sunday. This series is very close in many classes and it seems riders are taking advantage of the extra riding time this series offers at every round. Saturday night things seemed to cool a bit temp wise that is until the Smokin’ Guns took the stage. Happy stepped up and brought in a great local band offering tunes from southern rock

greats like Lynard Skynard and ZZ Top. Maybe the kids didn’t know many of the songs, but the parents sure had a great time jamming to the music we grew up with. Sunday brought the racing action and more heat and humidity. The crowd again came out to compete and the racing was intense as always. Just as the second moto of the day made its way through the first turn, my camera sensor went black. I had been struggling with my camera the last few events and today was the day we had critical mass. Fortunately it turned out to be a lens and not the body. I had a spare in the truck, but was left with no zoom capabilities. We struggled thru the day getting what pictures we could. Again, check out the Scrap Book

otlight NJ Rider t Sp Lukaitis By Scot

to judge how I am riding if I only have my self to compare to. Going riding with slower kids makes me almost want to just mess around with them the whole time because I can. I think it was 2 years ago right when I started riding big bikes me and Jason would ride a lot and I noticed that year is when everything started to pick up. The state of New Jersey has a rich history in motocross racing. From the early days of Micky Kessler to today’s stars like Jason Lawrence and Barry Carsten, New Jersey riders have always had that something special. My new website www. njmotocross.com was designed to explore that history and the riders who made it. Below is the next in a series of interviews with some of New Jersey’s most well known racers. This month’s NJ Motocross.com New Jersey Rider Spotlight is: Adam Blessing Tell us a little bit about yourself: My names Adam Blessing and I’m 18 years old. I have been racing since I’ve been about 7 years old till today. How about your racing history, what got you started? My dad is basically what started me out into the whole motocross scene. When I was five I got my first quad for my birthday. From then on to till I started racing I basically just cruised it around the back yard and ran over some swing sets and stuff. You know typical things of a 5 year old. After that I ended up moving into a new house, and that Christmas I think it was, I got a PW 50. A few months later I think my first race was at Sleepy Hollow where I raced the PW and my quad. I don’t remember how I did but I do still have some sick pictures of me with some rad trophies. From there on out that’s what it was all about, the trophies haha. How about your best races/ best finishes? Other then just local races I would have to say that this past year at Loretta’s was my best finish yet. I got a 4th in the 4 Stroke class which was pretty cool. I probably could have done better too if it wasn’t for me being hurt for the whole month before. I also did some Canadian Amateur national when I was on 80’s. I think I remember getting like a 7th overall up there. This past year has been pretty good though, I qualified for my first national at High Point, and then after that again at Budd’s Creek. I was pretty bummed though after I broke my tailbone in Georgia because I missed so many nationals because of that. And then back about 3 years ago at the Mini O’s in Florida I won a few classes and got a title for being the Olympiad for winning both the supercross race and the motocross races. You have a crew of pretty fast guys that you hang around with and ride with. Do you feel that makes you faster? Yea for sure that helps a lot. If I was to go out every day and ride just with my self I would never be able

How about when you ride with Jason Lawrence? Does he push you to go faster? Does he show you any Pro tricks? Jay definitely pushes me when I ride with him. He will atlways be the first person to say something if I stop riding early or something. I think about it as he looks out for me just as much as he does for himself with how much I need to ride. Other then that we usually do a few motos but in between them we throw in the occasional take out moto. I think that helps a lot though with learning to be aggressive and charging that much harder into a turn to try and come up right next to some one. The only downfall is that other people out there are trying to moto or something and we might roost them trying to roost each other but we have been trying to cut down on that. But when we ride like at Englishtown, no matter what I will try and do whatever I can to keep up with him so undoubtedly riding with him definitely pushes me to go faster. And as for the Pro Tricks the only ones I can think of is ramping some sickkkk jumps haha.

450 then the 250. I don’t think I have gone to ride a 250 in about 5 months. I guess it’s just because the 250f’s are so slow and the 450s are just so much more fun to ride.

FOR SALE!

What kind of training do you do? I usually just go to the gym, ride, and road bike it some times. I got a pretty sick road bike a few 2006 Honda CRF250, New, Never Ridden, months ago so I have $4,800.00 Call Anytime 717-385-4388 been trying to ride that when I can. It really does help too, which at first I Plans for the rest of 2007 and beyond? just thought it really wasn’t going to make a For the rest of the season I’m just looking on difference, but if you do it right and enough times getting back in better shape and riding a lot more. you will notice the difference for sure. Since I have I’m going to be in Florida for the winter to get ready been hurt though I really couldn’t sit on the seat to for some of the Arenacross series and hopefully all ride it for a while so that got cut down a lot, but I of the Supercross races. As far as next year looks just started going back to the gym now a few times I’m coming at the nationals with all I’ve got, I don’t a week and road biking it and trying to ride every have to many years left to see what’ s going to go day. on for my future so I better make it happen soon. I ‘ll be doing all the nationals next year and hopefully Who is helping you out this season? that goes good. My main help comes from my Dad. No matter what anyone else has to give me or anything could never compare to what he has done for me and where he has gotten me. He drives to all the races no matter how far they are or what’s going on. No matter what he has going on at work something is always having to deal with my racing and what’s going on next. I’m really glad I have someone here for me like him because there would be no way that I would be anywhere without him. Other then him though Kevin from Sport Honda has helped me out this year with my bikes and a bunch of parts, also Fox, FMF, Renthal, Dragon Goggles, Vision, Boyesen, Gaerne Boots, CTI2, Excel Rims, Dunlop, Factory Connection, BPM for my motors, Works Connection, Monster Energy Drink, Twin Air, and that’s about it.

Cumberland Cycle Center Home of

You qualified for your first national this summer. What was that like? The nationals are pretty rough. I went into High Point not knowing how this whole time thing was going to work out, but it actually worked out pretty good. I tried to be the first guy out in all of my practices and just put in as many of the hardest laps that I could. The motos though on the other hand are so gnarly and long. I remember at Budd’s Creek I came across the finish and thought the moto had to be like at most 2 laps left, and I looked over and the guy was just putting out the halfway card. The heat and everything is just so killer when you’re trying to go that fast for so long. In the long run though I’m just pumped that I can always look back that I have made some nationals no matter how the future goes for me. Loretta Lynn’s didn’t go quite as you expected. Tell us about your week down there. It actually wasn’t that bad. I got a 4th overall and a 2nd in one of the motos in the 4 stroke class. The pro sport class didn’t go nearly as good though. The first moto of that I ended up getting a flat like the 4th lap in and had to ride with that the whole time. Then the 2nd moto some guy hit me in the start and I crashed pretty hard in that moto and was a half a lap behind on the first lap. Other than that the week was pretty good. I look back and wish I wasn’t hurt before it for so long, but what are you going to do, getting hurts a whole part of the sport right? Do you enjoy riding the 450 or 250 more? I’d have to say that I like the 450 a lot more. For some reason I feel a lot more comfortable on the

The event offered factory contingencies and saw a great turn out from riders from both D6 and D4. The day also marked the debut of Miles’ expanded quad track and saw a FMX Freestyle show to boot. MRA was not there but check out the Mike Gurnsey pics here and thru a link at www.

Labor Day Sunday brought D6 Championship Points to the Dutchmen MX Park for both bikes and quads. Close to 500 racers came out to race on this traditional Labor Day Dutchmen / Sleepy double header weekend. Contingency money was offered from Suzuki, Kawasaki and Husqvarna. Many of the areas fastest racers were in attendance today, some for the first time on the new and improved DMX race course. Early in the motos, DMX owner Rob Papp looked at me and said that Dennis Johns had a quicker lap time than Barry Carsten did at 2:04. I thought to myself, even though that Carsten was the

@

Ultimate D6 iron man and can still run with the best in the business that the younger “A” rider Johns should be out there. Next up was Garret Toth in the Four Stroke division with yet a quicker lap time than Johns breaking the two minute mark at 1:59. Again knowing that Toth has been practicing here on Wednesday night open practices, it made sense to me. At last report the quickest time of the day came from Team Green’s Lowell Spangler. Spangler broke the track record laying down a fast lap of 1:56 on his way to winning two classes on the day. By the time you’re reading this the Dutchmen MX

with Cory Texter

Hey Everyone, Well I just got home from my long trip out west. I was pretty excited to go out there this year, but I knew it would be a tough trip. I was going out to race with the best of the best again and this time I was doing it coming off a three month long injury. Even though I haven’t been able to train or ride since before I got hurt in May we made the long trip out west to Castle Rock, Washington. Kevin Varnes and his parents Jimmy and Dolly along with his son Ryan made the trip out there with us. We hit a couple races on the way out in South Dakota. I didn’t have very good luck at the first race as I crashed passing the leader on the TT and I got a horrible holeshot and could only make it up to 4th on the Short Track. Then we made the trip out to Sturgis, South Dakota. The competition out there this year was awesome. Kenny Coolbeth, Jared Mees, Aaron and Rich King, Bugs Pearson, Davey Durelle, and many others were racing. There were about 40 riders. In the 450 Expert final, I got a great start and drag raced Durelle into the first corner. I got bumped high which allowed Mees to pass. We rode three wide on the fast and smooth track for about 6 or 7 laps and Coolbeth worked his way around us. Then I made another mistake trying to follow him around the top and slipped up allowing Aaron King to pass me on the bottom. We all finished within 10 feet of each other and it was a great race and a good confidence builder. The next day at Sturgis it rained and the track turned into a rough and slick holeshot contest. I was unable to get off the line and missed the final by one spot. After that we headed to Mount Rushmore. What a pretty cool place to go to. Then we headed to Washington and stopped at Mt Rainer on the way, which is the biggest mountain in the 48 main states. The National TT at Castle Rock looked like a lot of fun. I was kinda bummed there wasn’t any tight corners and no jump again this year but I was determined to do good. I struggled in qualifying with my bike. I couldn’t get it hooked up the way I wanted to and I was spending a ton of time shifting it. We qualified a very disappointing 30th. I made some changes and came from the back row in my heat race to finish 5th. Front row on the semi, I got off the line in 3rd and followed national number local guys Joe Kopp and Dan Stanley. I stalked Stanley for the whole eight laps, right off

his rear looking for a mistake that never came. I missed my 3rd national by a tenth of a second and my first national in five months. Sammy Halbert came from the 2nd row to win his first national followed by J.R. Schnabel and his brother Jethro Halbert. The next day I was feeling good for the short track. I qualified descent in the 19th spot, but I wanted to do a little better. I lined up in my heat race with Wiles, Kopp, Bigelow, Janisch, Murray, Rush and a couple other fast guys. I got a good initial jump but I wheelied for some odd reason and got pushed high and came off turn two in like 11th place. I put my head down and passed a couple guys and finished a disappointing 8th. It put me on the back row in my semi. In the semi I got off the line in 3rd place. I came out of turn two, and the guys in front of me must of scene a big stop sign on the back straightaway and almost came to a complete stop. I checked up and almost crashed and they got going again and I got passed by like four guys. I couldn’t get back around them as the track got really hard to pass on and finished a 6th in my semi.

Baer Dominates Crumling Memorial With a winners list that contains three National numbers, two Horizon Award winners and a GNC championship contender, the Paul Crumling Memorial race has become a top draw for Amateur riders in the Northeast, Evan Baer became the first rider to claim two wins. The race is named for the founder of Pro Plates number plates who died of a rare bone disease one week after racing here nine years ago. The race is open to riders who have never held a pro license, 125s and up, and over 12 years old. After winning last year, Baer decided to hold off his Pro Sport application until

numerous times. Stacey took second on the final lap, with Kissinger coming across in third. Baer earlier had taken the Sportsman final over Brandon Robinson. The race was almost a carbon copy of the Open A final earlier. Baer and Robinson pulled away quickly in a tight battle for the lead. In the Open A, R. J. Hart and Parks followed. On the final lap, Robinson slipped under Baer in the third turn to take the lead. In the Sportsman, Garrett Wilson, Sam Wiggins and Poe followed, but this time

For being out for so long and not being able to ride or train in forever, I still felt pretty strong and I was so happy to get home and get back on my training schedule. I want it really bad and I’m willing to work as hard as I can to get it. The singles points in the AMA are now tied between Kenny Coolbeth and Jake Johnson who struggled all weekend in Castle Rock. Jared Mees sits in 3rd. The overall points championship has Coolbeth winning, then Mees in 2nd and Jake Johnson in 3rd. Our next race is a basic twins race, I96 in Michigan and then my next shot at my first national in Springfield, Illinois at the short track on September 1st. Til then, see ya at the track!

Crumling Memorial Winners Circle (w/ Parents)- left to right 1st (64) Evan Baer; 2nd (22) Jordan Harris; 3rd (36) John Long after this race to attempt to be the first ever to repeat. The Crumling Race had three heats qualifying three and one semi with the final three tickets. At the start of the twenty lap race, Baer put his Don’s Kawasaki/ Baer Racing Products Kawasaki into the lead from Mike Poe, Jordan Harris, Dalton Winkler and Jake Shoemaker. Shoemaker fell in turn two on the third lap, but rejoined in last place. When Poe’s chain broke on the sixth lap, Baer was on his way to a half lap margin. Winkler, John Long and Joey Parks were battling fatigue and each other for third in the second half. After starting from last place, Long took third on the fifteenth lap, with Parks also getting by. Long and Parks battled for third, until Parks fell in one after tapping Long’s rear tire. Baer’s rear tire started going flat on the final lap, but he had enough margin to take the win. A youth Crumling Memorial was held for the 150 four strokes. Dan Bromley took the lead from a tightly bunched pack of Rebecca Zafia, Erin Kissinger, Jeremiah Snow and Tyler Stacey. With Bromley a few lengths in front the others, they were fighting for second, trading places

Baer held Robinson off the entire distance for the win. The Smith brothers, Colton and Chase each took a pair of wins; Colton in the 65 and 85 (7-11) and Chase in the 50 (4-6) and 50 Chain. National Champ, Cameron Smith easily outdistanced Devin Owen for the 50 (7-8) win. Ryan Connelly topped the 125, with Jesse Long taking the 250 B and John Long beating Harris for the Open B win. If he only started the Crumling heats on this bike! Mike Mester again took the 40 +, holding off Jerry Steele for the win and Rich Mellinger borrowed Long’s bike to win the 30 + final. Saturday night September 22nd, Bill Brown brought his Mason Dixon Dirt Track Series back to the Delta Cardiff Fairgrounds in Delta, PA. It was a beautiful last day of summer for the racers and spectators alike to spend an evening outdoors enjoying the fast pace of short track motorcycle racing sponsored by the Thompson Moving Company. The evening kicked off with 21 different classes of heat races both beginning and ending with the creme of the crop. The 251 – Open A division would kick off the show with # 38 Joey Parks taking the win. We saw four different classes of 50cc riders and everything in between with Lancaster HD’s Cory Texter winning the first of four Sportsman heats prior to the intermission show. At the break, spectators both young and old lined up trackside to see the high flying antics of Team FMXEast.com. Slade Waltman and Jumping Jerry Jackson put on a Freestyle MX Show that was fit for a king. After that we saw an all amateur “Dash for Cash” that was sponsored by local companies, A.M. Construction, PTI Machine Services and Got Life Insurance. Jordan Harris took home the $400.00 check and a big smile to boot. The evenings main events kicked off with a 25 lap feature race for the 251-Open A division.

Jason Isenock put his Suzuki out to the early lead and cruised to the win uncontested. In 50cc Sr. action we saw a good battle between National Champ Cameron Smith and local motocross hotshot Mark Hushon, Jr. Hushon lives just over the hill from the fairgrounds and traditionally makes it his once a year flat track stop. Smith was able to hold Hushon off for a few laps but on lap three Hushon was able to get underneath Smith going into turn one. Smith then went down trying to catch up and Hushon cruised to the checkers. The 250 B main got off to an exciting start with brothers Jessie and Johnnie Long tangling for the 1 and 2 spots. John would go down in turn two attempting to pass his brother and it was another cruise to the finish line and the win for Jessie. The evening wrapped up with the Sportsman main and just as in his heat race Cory Texter would repeat and take home the win in that division. Stay tuned to MRA for exciting details on next years events with the Mason Dixon group. Rumor has it that Bill Brown is looking to expand his series for next year by adding additional venues and possibly a year end banquet. Please be sure to check out all of tonight’s exciting racing action at www.mcracingaction.com.

Everybody loves a good show, first you start with some bar banging short track racing, throw in a freestyle show or some lawn mower racing, mix it up with some good eats and that’s exactly what you get, the Mason Dixon Dirt Trackers (a good show). Bill Brown from Street, MD formed Mason Dixon just a few short years ago because of a passion he had for motorcycle racing and for the hope of putting on a good show for the hometown crowd. Bill’s father was a Pro Am Hill Climber back in the day and Bill is a sprint car driver. He started traveling to the half mile short tracks a while back with a few friends and he immediately got hooked on the sport. Mason Dixon is in its third season of racing at their home track in Delta, PA. Bill, along with the Delta Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company promotes two events a year at the fairgrounds located right on the Mason Dixon Line in southern York County. Past events have seen freestyle FMX shows, dash for cash events and of course motorcycle flat track (and don’t forget the lawn mower) racing. Each event draws a huge spectator crowd with racing on Saturday nights under the lights. In talking with Bill, he told me that many years ago an old friend of the family taught him to “try an offer more than the next guy” and to “always put on the best show possible”. Bill carries this philosophy with him today and I imagine it’s the reason that he gets the turnouts that he does in good ole’ Delta, PA. I also talked with Bill about the future of Mason Dixon. I can’t let any secrets slip yet, but Bill tells me to hold onto my hat. He is in negotiations to expand his organization into a six race series located at multiple venues around the area. His hopes are to offer class championships with a year end banquet and awards for racers in all divisions. He’s also working “on the show” for the spectators. Bill says, “You’ll always get more than just a race

when you come to one of our events”. Some of the other things that Bill is working on are to expand his Dash for Cash events into the amateur ranks as well as for experts. There is at Flat Track School in the works for next year that will be more affordable than the current options out there and it will be taught by Pro Level instructors.

Bill also has a new rider to put on his bike for next season. Bill co - owns a bike with Bob Martin with Jim Varnes doing the tuning. Amateur phenom Jake Shoemaker will be climbing aboard the Mason Dixon Rotax for the 2008 season and we expect good things to come from that. In closing, Bill asked that we thank the following people for without them Mason Dixon Dirt Trackers would not exist. First off he would like to thank all of the people at the Delta Cardiff V.F.C. for the use of their facility and for providing the great concessions. Next, all the scoring help, especially Dollie Varnes and Candy Bear. His referee Mike Lynch and all of the track personnel. And of course the racers and all the fans because they are the show. Stay tuned to MRA for upcoming news on the Mason Dixon Dirt Trackers. It sounds like the best is yet to come.

Steering Stabilizers With the release of the new 08 Honda CRF250R and CRF450R, we’re about to see a revolution in steering stabilizers. Although they are nothing new, the steering stabilizer

(or dampener) just took on a whole new look. The new item from Honda is hidden behind the front number plate and weighs a mere 6.5 ounces. These little gems have been on the factory Hondas all year, along with something similar on the factory Suzuki of Carmichael and others.

Stabilizers have been a r o u n d for years. Although not very popular in motocross, you’ll find them on most of the fast guy’s bikes (and q u a d s ) in most other offroad racing and riding. They’re also not limited to of froad, being

quite popular with the sport bike crowd too. Some of the reasons they have not seen the popularity in the motocross market have been the cost, the bulky, unsightly appearance, and the lack of awareness to their benefits. Stabilizers minimize the bike’s tendency to develop headshake at high speeds, thus significantly reducing arm pump and fatigue. The rider doesn’t have to hang on as tightly through braking bumps and whoops. This translates into riding faster and longer. It takes less effort to blitz through bumps and chopped out sections with a stabilizer. Your suspension was designed to handle the vertical movement of your motorcycle. Without a stabilizer, your arms have to control the horizontal (or sideways) movement. Every jolt is absorbed by your arms. Most of us don’t realize how much our body absorbs because we’ve always ridden that way. The endurance factor is only one issue. The overall handling of the bike is also affected. By helping to stabilize the front end, your bike will track straighter through the bumps and sweeping turns while assuring secure landings at the end of doubles or tabletops. With the rear of the bike tracking straighter, this will allow the rest of your suspension to work the way it was designed to.

There has always been a trade-off when designing steering geometry: Tighter turning meant lack of high speed stability. Bikes can now be engineered to create more aggressive chassis geometry for increased agility without compromising machine stability. Riders now get the best of both worlds: quicker steering and better handling, especially at higher speeds. If you won’t be on new Honda, you can still have the benefits of a steering stabilizer. There are numerous manufactures building some great products right now. Most are mounted near your handlebars, but Scott’s new low-mount unit is installed above the front fender in front of the number plate. Many of the existing products have adjustability for high and low speed circuits. Combine items like this with the new fuel injected bikes and we’re about to see some exciting changes in our future!

Labor Day Monday we found ourselves at the Sleepy Hollow MX Park. It was Round # 12 of the D6 Ultimate MX series offering contingency money from all the major players. It was also the final round of the Sleepy Hollow Red Bull Mini Series and a special Suzuki Double Crown Weekend. Troy Lee gear was awarded to the top four Suzuki riders in the trophy classes courtesy of American Suzuki and local dealers West Shore Suzuki and Lebanon Valley Cycles. Sleepy Hollow ran a mini series (three race series within their regular schedule) offering special awards to champions in four classes, 125 A, 125 B, 125 C and Supermini. Just prior to press Eric Swarr, GM of Sleepy Hollow announced that the winners would be treated to Special VIP treatment courtesy of Red Bull Energy Drink at the 2007 MX of Nations at Budds Creek. Congrats goes out to this years winners, Chad Aughinbaugh, Tim Savidge, Jr., Zac Klaptosky and Kameron Page. Today’s race also offered a special treat to both expert division racers and spectators alike. Both the 125 and 250 A divisions were treated to 20 minute plus 2 lap motos providing some excellent racing action to all in attendance. Both classes saw heated battles between Jeremy Cook and Willy Toth with a little bit of Barry Carsten and Adam Blessing plus a host of others thrown in for good measure. In the end it would be Cook taking the 250 A win with Toth grabbing the 125 A O/A. Sleepy’s schedule will be all wrapped up for 2007 by the time you’re reading this issue. I’d like to give a big shout out to Eric Swarr for providing

Racer’s Edge

By Rob Dingman

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (September 14, 2007) – The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) has announced that it is embarking on an ambitious new plan to fundamentally change the way it conducts business. Specifically, the AMA is getting out of the racing series promotions business and will begin seeking series promoters for each of its professional and amateur racing disciplines. In making the announcement, AMA President/CEO Rob Dingman, said the organization must ultimately define the distinction between the traditional roles of a sanctioning organization and that of a series promoter. “It is clear to the senior management of the AMA that we must change the way we handle the business of racing,” said Dingman. “Unfortunately the AMA’s role has become blurred and this lack of clarity has led to an erosion of confidence in the organization. The primary objectives of this new initiative are to improve AMA Championship Racing overall and realign the company so it can be successful in its historic mission of serving the needs of motorcyclists by pursuing, promoting and protecting the future of motorcycling.” Dingman made the announcement this week at a staff gathering near company headquarters in Pickerington, Ohio. The announcement also appeared in Cycle News Magazine. Text of the

new vision as well as a list of Q&As can be found at www.amaproracing.com/newvision.asp. Dingman stated that the organization lacks the resources and infrastructure to effectively promote each of its series as well as govern the sport. “We are not getting out of motorcycle racing,” noted Dingman. “We are redefining our role so we can focus exclusively on race sanctioning as opposed to race promotion. We will partner with companies that can effectively manage racing from the commercial perspective. We will sanction racing events and provide operational staff where it is required.” The AMA’s new business model is the result of a top-down organizational analysis. “We took an honest look at ourselves and were able to identify those things that we are successful at as well as those that are lacking,” added Dingman. “This change will enable us to focus on the tasks that are more suited to our structure, abilities and resources.” The AMA has already begun searching for series partners for all disciplines except AMA Supercross.

We all know it was inevitable that sooner or later we would have MX bikes with fuel injection. It looks like the ‘08 RMZ450 will be the first mainstream model to arrive fitted with such. Details regarding the system specifics seem a little vague at this point so I thought that this month I’d touch on the basics of a fuel injection system. Most of the design technology discussed here will be gleaned from Sport Bike fuel-injection systems but I’m sure the MX systems will have some departures in their design to better suit their intended application. We begin with the fuel tank. The RMZ tank is aluminum, I’m not sure why, as many sport bikes have plastic tanks but it may be a pressure issue to aid in starting since we don’t have a battery to pre charge the fuel pump. The fuel pump itself will be located inside the tank; I assume this was done for space considerations as well as to keep the pump cooler which should extend its service life. It will probably be isolated within its own enclosure or cell to guarantee its constant immersion as fuel level drops and fuel sloshing becomes an issue. I also assume that the pump will be of the Roller Cell variety as these are most common in high performance applications due to their simplicity and low friction design. The pump has to be capable of supplying enough fuel with enough speed to meet the demands of the engine without supply pressure dropping. Fuel pressure is measured in bars (1 bar is equal to one atmosphere or 14.7 psi at sea level) most sport bikes systems operate in the 3 - 4 bar range and I suppose the MX applications will be close to that. Hopefully a high pressure one way valve will be fitted in case some type of fuel line blockage occurs; this valve will save the pump from being Al Carr damaged. The pumps are sized based on the fuel demands of the engine. Usually the engineers will choose a pump that has a 25 - 30

Engine Services • Rebuilding • Porting • Machining

% delivery margin in excess of the engine requirements. This is done to provide for transient acceleration conditions and to compensate for wear in the pump which will in time lower its effectiveness. Injectors are made to exacting tolerances so it is very important to keep foreign material out. A specialized filter with a fair amount of surface area and very fine pores will be required and it will need to be replaced regularly. Hopefully it will be somewhere accessible. Getting the fuel to the injectors will be via either reinforced fuel hoses or something similar to a fuel rail/metal tubing. I’m betting on hose since we are dealing with a single cylinder and the distance from the pump to injector should be a short distance. Since this is high pressure hose it may require regular replacement. A pressure regulator will be needed to maintain pressure in the line/rail. The regulator maintains pressure in the line at a given amount above the pressure in the intake manifold. This ensures the injectors will deliver the same amount of fuel when opened for a particular period of time. Odds are this will be handled with a simple spring/ diaphragm type of regulator rather than leaning on the electronics to calculate pulse injector width. At the end of the intake will be a return line that loops excess fuel back to the fuel tank. What I haven’t mentioned to this point is the injectors themselves. Injectors today are of the electromagnetic valve type and are basically a solenoid, but there is nothing basic about their function and variety so I’m going to keep you on the edge of your seats and save going into detail until next time.

1-1 for the overall on the day grabbing that valuable Kawasaki contingency money. Spangler would win two other classes and earn a second place finish behind another Cernic’s Kawasaki rider, Dylan Slusser in the 125 B division. The mini action was just as fierce as riders from all over the region filled the gates at Happy. The 85cc (7-11) group had 39 riders come out with recent Loretta’s 65cc Champion Jarek Balkovic grabbing the overall. In the 50 (7-8) division the east’s Mark Hushon would swap wins with the wests Vinny Luhovey with Luhovey getting the O/A. In

and race to the win. The expert gates brought a good showing as well with PR2’s Darryn Durham taking home the gold in both 125 and 250A. The Ultimate MX Series has five rounds left and will make a stop at the Kawasaki Race of Champions in early October. Be sure to check that race out, there will be contingencies from all of the biggies and lots of bike giveaways and extras for racers from all classes. The PAMX Association will be back in town at Doublin Gap in late October with more PA State Championship racing action. Be sure to check that race as well and log onto the web and check out their series at www.gopamx.com. (West) Saturday and Sunday September 15-16th saw a combination event come to the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club. Today’s event was a D6 Ultimate MX Series race offering Suzuki Contingency along with double D6 championship points. In addition the Team Green PA State Championship Series made a stop at Happy Ramblers bringing with it some great competitors from the District 5 region and additional contingency money from Kawasaki and Suzuki. The weather was perfect for racing with the sun popping in and out of the clouds with temps in the mid 60’s. The day kicked off with the Senior divisions first off the gate. There were over 650 entries for this event so the crew from Happy had to keep things moving. Both the A and B groups would leave on the same gate drop and it would be District 6’s own Barry Carsten leading the pack to the checkers. Carsten also took the win in moto two for the overall on the day. Next up we found the Four Stroke division and many fast racers from both ends of the state. It would be Team Greens Lowell Spangler going

Four Stroke Open Garret Toth Round # 10 of the MDRA Race Series found itself back at the Sleepy Hollow MX Park. This second round here of 2007 saw a smaller racer turnout than earlier in the year allowing a much more manageable day for staff and racers alike. The day’s race was sponsored by Ephrata Cycle and Sports in Ephrata, PA and was the last event at Sleepy Hollow for 2007. Again, please enjoy the Scrap Book theme of this race coverage. Class champions are listed here with complete results and race photos being found on our website at: www. mcracingaction.com. This allows for more racer exposure over a larger base of riders. We would enjoy your input on this format so if you have a minute send us an email while you’re online. This event saw the return of expert rider Casey

Clark adding an interesting mix to the recent Jeremy Cook and Willy Toth battles. And probably some of the best racing of late in the School Boy divisions we find Frank Lettieri and Garret Toth mixing it up and going right down to the wire in many instances. Watch for these two as they work their way into the expert divisions. The final round of the MDRA Series will head to Jeff Cernics Pleasure Valley Raceway in late October. There are still many divisions up for grabs so make sure you make your way west for the exciting series finale. There’s lots of expert cash on the line plus those valuable MDRA Bucks for amateur and youth riders. Plus the biggest purse of all, the bragging rights to say “I’m the Champ”. Good luck to all and we’ll see you in October.

Hey guys, It’s Chase. I just got back from the Unadilla GNCC in New Berlin, New York! This is an awesome track with a natural motocross course and woods that had something challenging for everyone. It rained off and on Saturday and the youth ATV’s kicked off the racing. Saturday afternoon the “pro” ATV racers went at it again with the “Killer B’s” of Bill Ballance and Chris Borich battling up front. At the end Chris Borich took the win and control of the points with Bill Ballance and Duane Johnson close behind in 2nd and 3rd place. On Sunday the youth motorcycles had a damp and slippery track to look forward

to! The track had many lines to choose from. Pennsylvania’s Cody Mummert took the overall win once again. Second place finisher was Steward Baylor and Zach Nolan took home third. The “pro” motorcycle race was once again an exciting one! David Knight won with Suzuki teammates Jimmy Jarret and Joshua Strong finishing 2nd and 3rd. In the middle of the race I went to a section of the track to watch the “pro” racers go through; it was on the side of a hill with soft-loomy dirt. All of a sudden I see David Knight coming with a few lap riders in front of him. Earlier that morning I raced the youth class and crashed at the very same spot; but David Knight maneuvered his bike over the side of the hill and squeezed in between the tree and the lap riders and passed them! It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen! When you watch the “pros” race, it is not only exciting, but you can really learn a lot!

See you on the starting line....

Chase

SLEEPY HOLLOW PIT BIKE SERIES MDRA Pit Bike - September 8, 2007 By Jim Bull

Sleepy Hollow hosted the final round of their three round pit bike series along with the final round of the MDRA pit bike series in early September at their facility in Fredericksburg, PA. Pitster dealer John McBride of McBride Sports Accessories stepped up to sponsor both series this year with a Pitster Pro X4 giveaway. Mike McAlister of Newville, PA was awarded the new bike at this round for racing all three rounds of the Sleepy Hollow Series. Names were dropped in a hat of all racers that attended the three rounds and McAlister went home the winner. The MDRA will be awarding a second McBride Pitster at their awards banquet in early November at Doublin Gap. Close to 50 racers came out for this round with the majority of the entries in the 90-125cc Adult division. Tyson Clark from nearby Carlise, PA put on a riding clinic while dominating two divisions on the night. Other winners included Kyle Davis in the 90 – 125cc youth group and Michael Giovanniello in Youth 50cc Mod. This about wraps up the pit bike action for 2007, I know that Pagoda and DMX has a series going but that one maybe in the books as well. Check their websites for details and to get the scoop on the complete line of Pitster Products, check out: www.mcbridesportsaccessories. com. See you in 2008.
