we’ll have KROC, and then it’s off to Pagoda for their annual big bucks race. This year they’ve also added a Women’s program during the big bucks weekend, offering some cool prizes for the girls. Speaking of the girls, D-6’s own Shayna Texter just became the first female rider ever to win an AMA GNC race. Props to Shayna and the entire RLT Racing effort. Make sure you check out the Randy Texter Memorial Race in late October at Path Valley Speedway. I’m sure Shayna will be there showing the guys around the track. Toward the end of the month we of course get to celebrate Halloween, and you have a number of options there. Doublin Gap moved their rider appreciation day to that weekend due to a rainout earlier last month. MAMA and Budds Creek are also running the Maryland des States that weekend and have just recently changed the format for that event. It was originally scheduled as a five moto weekend including both supercross and motocross in conjunction with a Pro Am event. They have now simplified it to offer a practice day on Friday and a two moto motocross format, offering one long moto on Saturday and one long moto on Sunday. The Pro Am is still on, and it should be a great event to attend. You can see the Budds Creek ad in this issue to get all the latest up-to-date information. As always, we thank you for reading, and until next time, stay safe and keep racing, and we’ll see you at the track. Jim Bull, MRA Editor

OCTOBER 2011
Happy October everyone, and boy can I say I’m glad that the last few months are in the books. First off, we had all of the natural disasters roll through the northeast. First came the earthquake, and boy was that different. I was working at my desk, and the whole house started to shake. It was like a big automatic garage door going up. My daughter called me just seconds after it happened, and I’m glad she did. I had no clue what had just happened to me. Then came Hurricane Irene and all of her rain. I believe you folks out on the Jersey Shore got hit the hardest. About all it managed to do here in southcentral PA was cancel a couple of races that probably could have gone off. And then just a few weeks later came the terrible flooding. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who were affected. I know we got 13” of rain here in my area, and we had some water in our home, but nothing like we saw on the news. We hope that everyone is recovering OK from all that. On a brighter note, I’m proud to say that I became a Grand Pap in the month of September. My daughter had a bouncing baby boy, and her due date was right in the midst of me having to travel to a number of races here in our area. Thankfully God provided again and delivered our new little bundle of joy late on a Thursday afternoon so that pap could leave on Saturday morning for the racetrack. Coming up in October

The camps are the vision of long time local motocross For the most recent camp the ministry racer Roy Craig. Roy wanted to share his love of God and the sport of motocross would like to thank various folks. First off, a big thanks to the Wicomico Motorsports with kids from the area. MDRA 6 at Miles Mountain Motocross September 4, 2011 • By: Jim Bull Labor Day weekend took us back to the beautiful Miles Mountain facility in Elkland, PA. I say it every time that I come here: “Life is grand on the mountain.” I guess it’s just the scenery that pulls it all together, but this is always a fun place to race -- not to take anything away from the staff or the facility because they are both top-notch. Even the ride there for me is not an issue because at the end of the day you know you had a fair shake at a great racing opportunity. I sometimes hear people say that it’s just too far, yet I’ve seen them travel hundreds of miles to practice in the off-season or to attend a qualifier. I guess you just don’t know until you go. Anyhow, the weekend shaped up rather nicely for all of the uncertainty over the weather and such. The Saturday practice day was hot but dry, and it provided a great evening for night cross racing up on the mountain. Sunday we awoke to slightly cooler temperatures and the threat of rain, but it held until the end of the day. Close to 350 racers came out for this next to last round of the MDRA 6 Series, and the racing was great all day long. The series will wrap up in early October at Rocket Raceway, and then the champions will be crowned at their annual rider fun day and banquet in early November. Check the day’s results here, and check out the Miles Mountain ad here in this issue for a special message from them.

12th ANNUAL PAUL CRUMLING MEMORIAL RACE D-6 FLAT TRACK - SHIPPENSBURG SPEEDWAY By Ben Breech • SHIPPENSBUG, PA. SEPT. 4
Mellinger Repeats at Crumling Memorial After becoming the first non-teenage winner of the Paul Crumling Memorial last year (by a huge margin), Rich Mellinger backed it up this year by becoming just the second rider to claim two of these events in its 12 years. The race is named for former Expert rider and founder of Pro Plates, Paul Crumling, who died a week after racing here of a rare blood disease in 1999. The race is open to any bike above 125cc and rider who has never held a Pro license, either current or retired. Previous winners have been a pair of Horizon Award winners and several National number holders, then a 30+ class competitor, Mellinger, blows the kids into the weeds last year. That the race was even held was amazing. The forecast called for thunderstorms, possibly heavy, from mid-afternoon on. This definitely held down rider attendance. While usually run at the end of the program, with rain moving into the area, the Memorial was brought to the line at the start of the finals, since it was one of the few races that had more than one heat, and if the track is lost due to rain, heat results can be official. As usual, there were several restarts as anxious riders tried to occupy the same spot. On the third and official start, Colton Smith took the lead from Dan Bromley and Mellinger. Mellinger shot past the two for the lead into three on lap four. Smith drifted high on the following lap, letting Matt Trout and Kevin Bills by. Two laps later, Smith slid out in four and parked it for the rest of the race. Bromley started to drift back, while Mellinger began pulling away and lapping riders. Another Memorial race is held for youth riders on the 150 Air Cooled machines. Cameron Smith took the lead from Ryan Varnes, Kyle McGrane and Chase Smith. Varnes used the outside line to take the lead out of four on lap two. They ran close for a few laps, then Varnes started pulling away. As they took the white flag, McGrane slipped into second. In the regular finals, Justin Johnson took the Open B lead from Jason Cunningham, Anthony Crabbe and Sam Bergman, making her first start after a knee injury at Daytona. Cunningham took the lead at the end of the opening lap and
started pulling away. Crabbe and Johnson began to drift to the rear of the pack as first Bergman, then Bills and Trout, worked their way by. With the weather-induced low turnout, some class were combined, like the 30 + and 450 Sportsman, although all four were fully capable of running the Sportsman. In fact, the 30 + riders, Roy Miller and Rick Winsett led Dalton Winkler and Joe Gathercole. They stayed the same until the fifth lap when Winkler bobbled in four, letting Gathercole past. Colton Smith took the 250 B final from Bills, Shain Bourassa and Ken Kolsovsky. The front two stayed close while they pulled away. Kolsovsky was very close and crossed the line just inches behind Bourassa. Winkler led Gathercole, Tyler Phillips and Joe Bromley at the start of the Open A final. Phillips took second off two on the second lap. The following lap, Bromley shot into second out of two. For the remainder of the race Bromley kept the pressure on Winkler for the lead, but came up short. The 65cc saw Damon Ream jumping to the front over Trever Williams, Chris Thomas and the rest of the field. After his typically slow start, Thomas shot into the lead off two on the second lap. Williams took second on the following lap, and the field began to spread out. Mellinger almost took his regular 40 + class, but he may have fell victim to some rain that started to spit during the race. Dallas Baer took the lead from Scott Mullen, Mellinger and Darren Phillips. Mellinger took second off two on the opening lap and took the lead from Baer in the same spot on lap four and started to pull away. But three was not the charm in this spot, as he fell in the same spot on the last lap all alone, handing the win to Baer. The 250 Sportsman was the last race and was quickly brought to the line to beat the rain. 2011 Horizon Award Winner Dan Bromley put his KTM Motorsports/Bromley Cycles KTM in front of Colton Smith, Roy Miller and Rick Winsett. Winsett took third off two on the second lap and second out of four two laps later. With the rain starting to increase, Winsett almost snatched the win at the line.

Shayna Texter (25) races into the AMA record books.
Texter Makes History By: Larry Lawrence • www.riderfiles.com
KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Sept. 10, 2011) – Shayna Texter, 20, of Willow Street, Pa., became the first female rider in history to win an AMA Pro Singles race in round 17 of the 20-event series on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway. It didn’t come easy for Texter. She had to overcome a bad start and work her way up from seventh to take the historic win. Texter joins road racer Elena Myers as a female winner of AMA Pro Racing national-level races. Myers won a Supersport race last season. When the green flag dropped, Texter, who qualified fifth, thought her night was ruined. “I’ve been struggling all year with starts,” she said. “In the Heat race I spun it up off the line in first gear, I was running almost Mile gearing from Springfield, which was crazy. Mark Cheza, Nichole’s dad, said, ‘Why don’t you try second gear and just rev it hard? Hopefully, that will help, and you won’t have to quick shift so much.’ I went out and did it, and I thought it was over. I spun it so bad the second row passed me. “I just put my head down. I had my eye on (leaders) Briar (Bauman) and James Rispoli the whole time. I kind of just put my eye on them and didn’t worry about the rest of the people.” What resulted was one of the best drives to the front all season in flat track racing. After getting into turn one in seventh place, Texter quickly dispatched of Michael Avila on the first lap to get to sixth. Then she passed Jason Isennock the next lap for fifth, and so it went. By lap six of the 16-lap race, she’d gotten by a very talented James Rispoli and was aiming for rookie sensation Briar Bauman. Bauman and Texter went back and forth trading the lead a couple of times. “I’d bumped him (Bauman) pretty hard at Springfield and he told me he was going to get me back,” Texter laughed. “I told him I deserved it. And sure enough, he gave me a couple of pretty good hits there at the end of the race.” Texter kept her cool and was able to hold off the 16-year-old Bauman to the flag, winning by a margin of 0.358 seconds. She had made an amazing run to the front and the fans loved it, giving her a standing ovation. “It was such a fun race, and my bike was geared so different from everyone else’s, but it worked,” Texter explained. “I was making passes out of the turns, into the turns, in the middle of the turns. It was crazy. I could do anything I wanted on the track.” The victory moved Texter into rarified air in terms of women motorcycle racers. To cap off the evening at Knoxville, Texter’s good friend Nichole Cheza scored a seventh in the Grand National, marking her best-career finish. “Nichole came over and gave me a big hug after I won,” Texter said. “I was so happy to see her go on and get such a great finish.” Texter hopes to move up to the Grand National bikes in the next year or two, it’s just a matter of putting together a budget to make it happen. Whatever the future holds for Shayna Texter, one thing is certain – on a warm Saturday night in Iowa, she permanently etched her name in the AMA record books. Editors Note: Shayna grew up racing here in the District 6 region under the guidance of her father, Randy, out of the Lancaster HD camp. Randy was a national champion in his own right and an all around stand up guy. He made many contributions to racing, not only here in our area but all over the nation. We lost Randy to heart and lung disease in August of 2010, but his spirit lives on through his kids, Shayna and Cory. We all know he’s taking that big victory lap in the sky over Shayna’s latest accomplishment. You can view the entire race on YouTube by searching “Shayna Texter Knoxville” or by following the link on our website at www.mcracingaction.com. Way to go, Shayna.
MRA: Amanda, thanks for taking the time to chat with us. After a successful amateur career, you recently had your first chance to line up with the WMX Pros at Southwick’s infamous Moto-X 338 racetrack. It has a reputation for being a brutal sand track, and coupled with the weather that preceded Hurricane Irene, it surely looked like a challenge for a new WMX rookie. Was that your first time at the track, and if so, what did you do to prepare for it? AB: Well, I have never been to Southwick. But my dad prepared my bike for that weekend. We had Chris from Honda adjust the computer in my 2011 Fuel Injection CRF250. I prepared myself by walking the track with Sean Hackley a few times to make sure I got the feel for the track. MRA: What did you think of the course, and how did your race (motos) go there? AB: WMX was first practice, and I felt pretty confident that I was doing good. The track was in great condition. The motos started coming around, and then it started raining. By the time my moto came around, it was a sloppy, sandy mess. I crashed three times in the first moto and ended up getting 24th. In the second moto, I managed to keep it on two wheels and ended up getting 11th for 17th O/A. MRA: Was it tough to adjust to the longer motos? AB: The motos aren’t really that long. I was prepared for Loretta’s motos, which are 20 minutes plus 2 laps. For some reason the WMX only has 15 minutes plus 1 lap. MRA: Next up was Steel City… a track that I would guess had a much more familiar feel to it for you. How did you like that track? AB: I personally love Steel City. That track tends to get really rough though. MRA: How did your motos go? AB: The first moto I was doing rather good until I fell. I got back up and managed to make my way to 15th, but on the last lap I fell again, and two girls managed to pass me. I ended up 17th. In the second moto I had a dead last start. I’ve never been good at starts. But anyway, I ended up making my way up to 12th for 12th O/A. MRA: Having been there that day, with the high heat and humidity, I wondered how tough it would be to race at that level of competition, in those extreme conditions. Did you do anything special to deal with the heat (like wear a camelback)? AB: I drank lots and lots of water. MRA: Last, but not least, was Pala. On TV, it looked like an extremely fast course… what was your take on it? AB: The track was very difficult with lots of big jumps, mostly a wide open track. I wasn’t really feeling comfortable on that track. MRA: How did your motos go there? AB: In the first moto I was nervous because I wasn’t hitting half the jumps and the other girls were. But, we took off and I was in like 17th. Somehow, I fell on top one of the tunnels, and my bike was stuck. Thankfully for the fans at Pala, they helped me get my bike down, and as I drove away, they cheered. Hahaha guess they thought it was funny. I ended up 21st in that moto. The second moto I started next to Ashley Fioley. I had a really good start for once. I was in 10th at one point. I finally started hitting stuff, but I guess it just wasn’t enough because I ended up getting 16th that moto for 18th O/A. MRA: Regarding getting your bikes and equipment to the events, how do you handle that? AB: My dad and I usually travel to the close tracks, but Pala was a little too far for that. Thankfully Tony Archer, Hunter Mims, and Kyle Roark drove my bike out along with theirs, and my dad and I flew out. MRA: Having those three nationals behind you now, do you have an idea of areas you need to improve? AB: I need to improve on starts and turns. MRA: What are your GOALS FOR THE 2012 SEASON? AB: My goal for the 2012 season is to be in the top 10. MRA: Of the WMX racers, who inspires you and why? AB: Ashley Fiolek inspires me, even though she’s my teammate on the Cycle Nano team, she inspires me a lot. She has come a long way with racing, and I am so happy that she is the WMX 2011 Champion. MRA: Regarding COACHING & TRAINING… are you working with anybody, or doing the work on your own? AB: I recently have been going to the Jimmy Weinert training facility down in South Carolina. I plan on going back in October. Currently, I am taking a little break. Probably like a week, because I’ll start to have the itch to ride. I would also like to thank God for keeping me safe on the track, my dad for making this possible, Cycle Nano, Accurate Pest Control, Track1graphics, Traders, JWTF (Jimmy Weinert Training Facility), Bumpstiks, Zack Kantner, DEP Pipes, MX Solutions, Millenuim Electric, and BPS (Blettner Power Sports).

Foot of the Mountain - PA State HS Series August 28, 2011 • By: JC Benson With the uncertainty of Sunday’s weather, Foot of the Mountain decided to race, and race they did. Rain was still falling as the event got underway. For safety, the course was shortened and time decreased for the beginning races. The track surface was extremely slippery, and deep ruts began to form, but as the program continued the sun came out. By the time the Adult ATV class was ready to take off, they opened up more of the course, and the riders found themselves traversing a challenging trail with some mud bogs thrown in for good measure. No one was second-guessing their attendance at the end of the day, and all had a great time. A special thanks to Foot of the Mountain for their wonderful hospitality. NEOC Harescramble - Ormond Farms 2 R Sept 10-11, 2011 • By: Noel Hartem On Saturday, we started the day with 42 Tikes on Bikes taking the first stab at the soft sand in the pits. One o’clock was key time for the Oil Injected racers. They have the smallest tires and the most trouble with the sand traps, but it was not a problem for them on the 3-mile course. Top three overall spots went to #89 Wayne Cox out of the 7-8 OI, with #642 Allen Adkins winning the 4-6 class, and second overall over 7-8’s #602 Freddy Cabegin. At 3 p.m. 80+ Peewees blasted the three mile trail for an hour. It was nice to see all my familiar helmets dicin’ it out after the long summer break. It looked like they had all been practicing because there was no lack of competition. Top 3 overall were from the (7-9) 65 class. #185 Johnny Manera led the whole race without a flaw, leaving #53 Michael Nirdlinger to duke it out for second over #41 Jason Tino. It was a battle to the end for those two. #444 Colin McCollough won the Thumper. (4-8) 50 winner was #28 Michael Beeler just ahead of #237 Tyler Kowalski. The (10-12) EL class was taken by #705 Hunter Riggins, proving he is more than ready to enter the Thumper class next season, and having his best race ever was #516 Mason Abrams for the (4-9) EL win. At 5 p.m. the Pit Bike lines took off like it was Black Friday at a Wal-Mart opening. The first to grab the best deal was #40 Nicky McCollough from the Young Bucks with a frenzy of bargain shoppers gunnin’ for blood behind him. Big Slam Daddy’s #910 Darren Huff and #737 Super Sonic Sumpter were next in line for a good overall spot, leaving #85 Ryan Klair and #44 Alan Jessat from the Mega Bucks to close out the top 5. I have said it before, and I will say it again, if you have not seen or participated in the Pit Bike event, then you are missing something very cool and fun. It’s a must-see event. Saturday evening we shared a yummy cake and watched a very beautiful tribute made by the Enman Family for the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy that touched the whole nation. Ormond Farms was quiet by 10 p.m. with thoughts of what tomorrow would bring out on the trail and at the checkered flag. Sleeping Getting ready for the ride.
First and foremost, I would like to say a special heartfelt thanks to everyone for participating and paying their respect on such a meaningful weekend as 9/11. With all the loss, tragedy, heartbreak and bad news that seem to keep coming to our door fronts from across the country and world, I found great comfort in being surrounded by family units and good friends for this emotional weekend. For two days, everything was right in the world. I don’t take that peace and happiness for granted, and I know that you don’t either. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank all that shared this 9/11 weekend with the NEOC Family. This race weekend actually started out Friday night. With the length of time between our races, everyone was chompin’ at the bit to see their racing family and lay the rubber down again. By evening, the place was packed, and by the time the full moon had risen above us you could hear dozens of howls echoing across the farm. Of course, it was not at the moon but at the new, ever-so-popular NEOC ZUMBA Instructor and her finely tuned class of racers! There were as many spectators lined up watching as you would see during a racing event (with perhaps a bit more drool and awe, lol). I fell asleep to the sweet sounds of crickets and howling laughter that night.

with a fresh breeze blowing through the screen with just your feet sticking out of the cool sheets and crickets for a lullaby is an easy thing to do…until one of those pterodactyl skeeters comes through too and grabs ahold of your ankle and sucks the blood clean out of it! Yeah, and I thought the chiggers were scary. Where the heck did those giant bloodsuckers come from anyway? Did that earthquake open up a prehistoric vault or something?! (Please tell me I’m the not only one that was being assaulted by those things.) After our 9/11 Tribute with The Bayside State Prison Honor Guard and Chuckie was complete we all went into the pit to begin our Sunday races. At 8:30 a.m. Brian bellowed his 10 second count, Todd waved the green flag, and the AA Youth threw the first roost of the day. With an incredible bar-bangin’ battle, #7 Ryder Lafferty took his first win this year over points leader #2 Jeff Hall. Leading the entire race and win for the (12-15) 100 class was #292 Tyler Tayvinski. The best race of the weekend came from the (14-15) 85 class between winner #18 Brian McAlinney and #295 Jared Wobensmith. They swapped spots every single lap and were never 2 seconds apart the whole time. What great racing and sportsmanship between these two riders. After coming back from a serious injury to his arm, #90 Malcolm Hill took the (12-13) 85 win on the fifth lap to prove he’s still got the fire inside. Making it four in a row for the (10-11) 85 class was #203 Ryan Hall. Taking his third win this year to climb the points ladder for the golden ring in the (13-15) 150 division was #916 Troy Abel. The (10-11) 65 win went to #26 Kyle Tino by putting a serious charge on the last lap. #412 Tyler Pilcher took the win for (10-12) 125 with a commanding lead at the end. Our ELW lead points tie was broken with #618 Cortney Abrams taking the win. At 11 a.m. 200 C riders filled the starting area, with spectators surrounding them filling the hills and sidelines. #313 Cole Kennedy of the Heavy class took the overall with three veteran riders from the Ind & Mech class -- Mike Crum, Jay Dean and Larry Gordon -- close in tow. Key time for the Main Event was 1:30, and that’s exactly when Todd gave the 10-second count for 12 wicked fast AA riders. The most wicked fast at Ormond Farms on this day was #11 Shane Hufford, #3 Jesse Groemm and X Game Enduro cross contender #356 Ryan Rodgers. To become a better rider, all you have to do is watch all the AA & A riders to see how they ride the trail. They look ahead and pick their lines, they are not always tapped out but steady and smooth,

MDRA 6 at Evansville September 10-11, 2011 • By: Jamie B. Brown The MDRA 6 Series made its third stop at Evansville MX Park in Berwick, PA, for round 12 of 13. This was the last time that riders will get a chance at riding this natural hilly terrain track during the MDRA 6 racing season in 2011. With most places seeing over 10 inches of rain in the days prior, it played a big part in Saturday’s practice sections. Track conditions made a big improvement for Sunday’s main events and turned out to be more than perfect by the afternoon. With a few muddy spots due to the natural springs popping up on the track from all the rain that we had the previous week, it didn’t stop the riders from making some pretty good lap times during the MDRA series race. Jeremy Cook goes 1-1 during the Open A class, while Richard Kastle followed a close second during the day’s event. You can check out a portion of the results here or view the full results at www. mdramxracing.com. Log on to www.AwesomePhotos.com to view and purchase the latest racing photos from this event and more.

Cameron Davis tops the podium in the Class 2 - 50cc division.
The 65cc (7-9) class celebrates.
Rocket Raceway – Allegheny Cup September 18, 2011 • By: JC Benson The Allegheny Cup at Rocket Raceway was held on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. This special event is geared towards the future of our sport, showcasing the 50 and 65 classes, but with all classes offered on the day. The racing action was hot in all motos, beginning with the 250 A Class. Competition was intense for the holeshot between Kendall, McDade, Schmelyun and Wozney, with McDade coming out on top followed by Kendall, Schmelyun and then Wozney. Kendall was closing the gap on McDade but went down hard, handing second to Schmelyun, with Wozney a close third. Moving to Race 2, the Class 1 (4-6) Stock the Allegheny Cup was up for grabs, and Callin Kauffman quickly rose to the top of the class. In Class 2 (7-8) Stock, riders took to the course, with Gage Stine getting the holeshot. A crash in turn one put race contenders to the ground. Cameron Davis, who was caught up in the crash, was on a mission to cut his losses to a minimum and picked off one rider at a time on his way to the top five. Stine was long gone, leaving Davis, Yentzer and Lewis to battle for second place. Lewis went down, leaving Yentzer and Davis scrambling for racing room. Yentzer went to the outside and experienced difficulty in the rough while Davis cut low. Davis came through first and set his sights on Stine. However, Stine’s lead was insurmountable, and Davis crossed the line in second with a flat tire, with Yentzer finishing third. The second moto saw a reversal in fortunes, as Davis bested Stine while working through lapped traffic. Mark and Shelly Carlton of Rocket Raceway would like to thank the following Allegheny Cup sponsors: Sheetz, PR2, NGK Sparkplugs, Get High Racewear, Yamaha KTM of Camp Hill, Bedford Motorsports, Hillview Motorsports, Cernic’s Racing.com, 343 Graphix, Fast Mann Racing, Silkolene, Three Spring Mini-Mart, Fly Racing, Best Buy, Cobra Moto, Transworld Motocross, Steelers-store.com, MXP TV, Mommygear, and Impulse Graphics. I caught up with Gaylon Dickson at Miles Mountain close to one month after his podium ride at the amateur nationals this year. Gaylon is one of those guys that truly loves the sport, and you can find him out front just about every weekend at a racetrack somewhere. Gaylon started racing at the age of 8, and except for a brief break to do a couple year stint in the U.S. Navy, he has been at it ever since. Gaylon remembers that first race at Punxsutawney way back in the day. He told me he pulled over about halfway through the race just to watch; he wasn’t quite sure yet that he really wanted to do this. Then at his second race he won a trophy and caught the bug, and the rest is history. Gaylon operates his own service and accessory shop in his hometown and just loves to be around the sport. He went 4-3-3 at Loretta’s in the 40-plus class, and he told me he probably could have finished better if he hadn’t needed to stop for a refuel in one of his motos. Just goes to show no matter how long you’ve been at it, stuff happens. We would like to congratulate Gaylon for his finish at the ranch and thank him for being a true ambassador for the sport.

Two Stroke Nationals at Sleepy Hollow September 16-18, 2011 • By: John Sherer The last weekend before the calendar turned to fall, Sleepy Hollow MX Park held their first Two Stroke Nationals weekend. From track owner to spectators, everyone was treated to near perfect weather for racing, sunny and in the low 70’s. It was a far cry from all the rain we’ve had over the past month. As I talked to several riders, everyone agreed that the grounds crew had worked the racing surface into the best conditions seen all year at the Hollow. Sunday, the track held its integrity moto after moto. Good lines had been run in, and at intermission very little grooming and watering took place. In walking through the pits, it was almost a walk back in time. A lot of machines from the ‘70s and ‘80s were present. Names like Maico, Penton, Can-Am and Husqvarna. They were some of the very best of their era. Also, the pounding thump of the 4-stokers was replaced by that high pitch 2-stroke buzz. To the mxers who grew up riding these bikes, it was like music to their ears, and it brought a smile to their faces. Rider turnout was around 200, which put enough riders in the gates for exciting starts and action in every moto. The onlookers lined the fence along spectator row to enjoy the action. There were times when I personally put the camera down to soak all the racing in. Passing was at a premium all over the track. Two twenty minute +2 lap motos were run in the 250 A class, and a classic battle grew between #18 Sean Hackley and #116 Casey Clark. Lap after lap Clark stayed in the hunt on Hackley’s rear fender but could not find anywhere to get past him. Clark finished second overall. The effort put in from both riders received a loud round of cheers and applause from the crowd. When the vintage machines took the track in their respective classes the racing was tight and furious. Although they were noticeably turning slower lap times, there was no lack of excitement watching them push their suspensions to the limit. These bikes were fast for their time, but no match for what they’ve evolved into today. Overall the weekend turned out to be a success. The riders were pleased and made notice to be here next year. The fans were treated to some of the best racing at Sleepy Hollow all race season. If you were unable to make the race this year, try to fit it in your schedule for next year. If you want to cure your case of nostalgia make the trip out and catch the second annual Two Stroke Nationals, you won’t be disappointed.

S EXCLUSIVE DEALER FO D N A L Y R: MAR 2012 EC 300 Available Late October Andy Powers (105) goes for the holeshot on his Toy Tech Husqvarna.
AMA National Harescramble – Andy Powers
On Sunday, August 21, at a place called Thunder Ridge, just south of Unadilla, N.Y., conditions were pretty dry. Some rain was forecasted, but that never showed up. In the morning, 109 total racers raced with 22 bikes on the 200 C line, and we were in the second starting row. The front line had five Super Senior B/C riders, and they started the rows one minute apart. Andy pulled the holeshot and never saw any of the 21 racers from his row again until he lapped them, so at the end of the first lap, he was the first bike through OA, hauling butt and on fire. No one would see another bike for over two minutes. He definitely turned some heads on the 125 Husky. He continued his pace and put in some consistent laps. The overall came from two rows back, a good rider on a KTM 350 four stroke. Andy held him off till the last lap and made him work for it. A good day’s work, First in Class and Second Overall...link to lap times. http://www.wnyoa.net/Results _Page/documents/ThunderRidgeBikeAMbyClass.pdf The club had a good 11 mile loop with very little dust. It was a good setup. Lots of people were asking me about Andy and the bike during the race, and lots of people congratulated him afterwards. One guy that Andy lapped came up to him after the race, shook his hand and said, “Man, when you passed me...that was crazy fast.’’ That’s what I like to hear! We have had our share of lumps this year, but it’s great when it all comes together! Special thanks to...Toy Tech Cycles, KB5 Industries, Cycra Handguards, Gaerne Boots, One Industries, RK Chain, Wiseco Pistons, EVS Sports, and Montana Motoz.
