Happy Labor Day everybody, another chance to get a few days off work to go racing, what a Country. We also get to celebrate the opportunities that we have to earn a living as Americans, from business owners, to laborers, to Pro Racers, every single one of us makes a difference. September is a great time of the year to go racing, the weather is starting to cool down and there are tons of events this month to go to around the District. From Hare Scrambles to Moto-X to Short Track, and don't forget Adult Mini Bike Racing (previewing this month) a guy or a gal can race to their hearts content. (See the Upcoming Events in this issue). I'd also like again to thank you, our readers, advertisers, and contributors. Without all of you there would not be a need for MRA. I'd also like to thank those of you who subscribe to MRA (even though you can get it at the track), your subscription makes a difference. The more subscribers we have the more racing action we can bring you. Again thanks, and we'll see you at the races.

Performance R e p o r t Will Race gas improve the performance of my bike? Race gas will definitely help the performance of your bike. How much it helps your bike depends on the type of race gas used and what modifications you have done to your motor. The four things you need to understand about race gas are cooling effect, burning speed, octane rating, and energy value. Of these four things the most commonly recognizable is octane rating, and the other three generally are known more to engine builders and serious racers. I will briefly explain these four things so that when you do go to buy race gas you are not fooled or confused when comparing two fuels that claim to be equally matched. The octane rating is the ability of the fuel to resist detonation and or preignition. Octane rating is rated in Research Octane Numbers or RON, Motor Octane Numbers or MON, and finally Pump Octane Numbers or R+M/2. Pump Octane Numbers are the ones you see written on the yellow stickers on the gas pumps, and is gotten by averaging the two RON and MON together. A good quality company will use MON numbers since it is a much more reliable method, and used more in the racing community. Do not be fooled by a company that used RON numbers. These numbers are generally higher than MON numbers and are much easier to come by, thus some companies use them to try and get you to think their gas is a higher octane than it really is. Energy value is an expression of the potential of a specific fuel. One thing to remember in looking at an energy value is that it is measured in BTU’s per pound, not per gallon. This is important also because the air fuel ratio is measured in weight and not in volume. Also taking effect is the cooling effect of a fuel. The cooling effect has to do with the heat of vaporization. The higher the heat of vaporization, the better effect it will have on cooling the intake mixture. While the cooling effect is important in both two and four stroke motors, it has a much greater importance on high performance two stroke motors. While these things may not be easily understood by the common individual, a basic knowledge of these terms will go a long way when looking to purchase gas. The final thing you should look at is the burning speed of the fuel. This is the speed at which the gas releases its energy when burned. Most high-speed internal combustion engines need the fuel to release its energy by the time the piston reaches 20 degrees ATDC. Any energy released after this point is wasted and not contributing to peak cylinder pressure. Now that you know some of the terminology concerning race gas you need to decide what type of gas you are going to run. If your bike is stock and has had no head or cylinder modifications you will benefit from running race gas, but the benefits are limited. The one benefit of running race gas in this case is that you know you have a quality gas that will help prevent detonation. Pump gas is not very reliable, and bad or old pump gas has been the end of many two-stroke motors. While performance will be enhanced by race gas in a stock motor, it will not be an as noticeable improvement as you might think. The one advantage race gas will give your stock motor is a predictable burn and give you clean jetting that will not change like it does when switching from one brand of pump gas to another. So if you have a stock motor race gas will benefit you, but will not give you great performance enhancement by itself. If you have a modified head and cylinder the race gas issue isn’t even a consideration. Once you have a head that has been cut to raise compression you will have to run race gas or face having detonation occur, which will ruin your cylinder. The kind of race gas you use now also comes into play. There are many different levels or qualities of race gas, and depending on the type of modifications or type of motor you have will
determine what gas is best for you. Most racers use a mid level race gas like VP red or C12. These gasses have octane ratings at 105 for red and 108 for C12, and provide a good burn rate and energy value for the modern two-stroke motor. Both these gasses are also in a lower price range for an average rider, and cost between five and seven dollars a gallon. For an even bigger advantage a rider may choose a fuel with added oxygenation that gives you more of a complete burn. This gives you added horsepower and performance characteristics. While the oxygenated fuels give you much better performance they don’t have a higher octane rating. For instance VP MR2, MR1, and MRX01 all offer great performance, but none have a higher octane rating than VP Red or C12. In this case burn rate and burn speed have more to do with performance. It is always important to check with your engine builder for a recommended fuel to get the optimum potential from your motor. While these oxygenated fuels give you great performance they are rather expensive, some costing twelve dollars a gallon. With the new four-stroke motors out there giving the two-strokes a run for the money many companies are now developing new fuels to enhance four-stroke performance to a new level. It is important to remember that a fuel designed for a four-stroke won’t necessarily work in your two-stroke and vise versa. It is important to make sure that the gas you choose is designed for your bike. Many people make the mistake of taking the gas their buddy uses in some other application and assuming it will improve performance in their bike also. While some fuels do provide great improvements in both types of bikes, specifically MRX01, these fuels are very few and far between. VP Fuels has just added a new fuel to its line up called Ultimate 4. While we have not tried this gas yet reports are very promising and it seems to be on the cutting edge of four-stroke technology. One alternative to running a full-blown race gas is running an AV or Aviation gas. This is the 100 low lead that can be bought at some local airports. This can be run in most modified motors and gives the rider a cheaper alternative to race gas. While AV gas won’t give you the performance of race gas it will give you a very reliable gas that will prevent detonation if jetted properly. Since the FAA doesn’t want planes falling out of the air the production of AV gas is strictly controlled, thus you know you are getting a quality product that is the same from one airport to another. The other benefit from running AV gas is that it does have preservatives that prevent it from going bad. Since pump gas will go bad after only a brief period of time, and even race gasses need to be stored properly or they can go bad in as little time as a week, Av gas does have its advantages. Will Race gas give you better performance? YES it will, but you need to look at what kind of motor you have, how serious a racer you are, and how much you are willing to spend before you run out and buy just any race gas. Remember that race gas will give you improved performance, and some gasses will improve performance even more than others, but if you aren’t using all the power your bike has with one type of gas, it may not be worth it to spend the money on another type of gas just to impress your friends. Race gas is an important part of racing, and with most modified motors is a requirement, so be sure to investigate what you need and what is available to you before you spend hard earned money on a fuel that wasn’t designed for your bike. If you have any questions about race gasses or what type of fuel you should use feel free to email us at vpe@early.com com and we will answer your questions as soon as possible.

EVANSVILLE RACEWAY
Evansville Raceway was home to Round #9 of the District 6 seasonal points race in late July. It was a gorgeous day in the hills of Central PA. If you want to go MX racing and see some beautiful scenery, Evansville is the place to do it. Most people I talk to say evansville is one of the best tracks in the District to race at. Evansville's next event is Saturday, September 7th, their hosting Round #5 of the PA State ATV Championship. If you want to get your monies worth - I say head on up to Berwick. -Jim Bull, MRA

probably put you in a front end high situation. Now, you've got to get the nerve up to try the jump. My theory on the nerve thing is -- if you have any doubt(s) at all that you are not going to make it, you should not be trying it. You must have a clear, positive, and determined attitude to be successful in nailing the jump. Otherwise you might end up in the hospital. Try to remember that when riding your bike and jumping, you need to consider you and the bike as one unit. You can make the bike do as you want it to.
Jumping
REACTIVE SUSPENSION, INC. By Andy Fleck & Al Carr
The sport of motocross has come a long way in the past 30 years. Back in the day, the jumps were very different than they are today. In the 70's, there weren't massive doubles, triples or table tops with steep take offs and landings. Instead they were more like little jumps with flat landings. If there were double jumps, they weren't nearly as steep as they are today. Suspension too has changed. Travel was around 6 inches in the front and 3 to 4 inches in the rear. As time passed technology improved and the bike's suspension became much greater. So in time, the obstacles became larger and more technical as well as the injuries. Bigger jumps, doubles jumps, table tops and rhythm sections became mainstream. Nowadays in this sport you have to be a good jumper to accomplish any good results. At ReActive Suspension, we do mods for riders with different abilities. Starting at beginner and going all the way through to the pro level. Here is a scenario that happens quite often. A customer says, "My bike works great everywhere except that big double. I'm bottoming hard off of that jump every lap." The question we have to ask ourselves is "What is the ability of the rider and is he or she doing the jump properly." You can suspend a bike to handle dropping off a 2 story building but imagine how it is going to work around the rest of the track. (By the way, you really can't suspend a bike to handle dropping out of a two story building onto flat ground...something is going to break.) The point is... the jump needs to be executed properly. To some people this comes easily. To others, it just doesn't feel like they belong up there. If you are one of these people, here's a few ideas that may help you. The most important thing before you even think about jumping is that you need to have the bike set-up for your weight. If you have a spring on your rear shock that is way too stiff for you or the shock has too much preload in it, then be ready to be ejected over the bars. the same goes for all your compression and rebound adjusters on both the front forks and rear shock. If any of these clickers are not close to where they should be then your jumping prowess can't reach its fullest potential. For example, if your shock rebound is too fast, it will be more likely to throw you into a front end low situation. If your shock rebound is too slow, then it will
With that said, pick a jump that you are having trouble with or can't clear at all. If your not clearing it then look beside the jump to the left or right. Is there room to land on the flat ground? If so, you can jump to either side to figure out the speed in which you will need to attain in order to clear it. This could be a bit of a hard landing because you are landing on flat ground not necessarily prepped to be part of the track. Once you can land evenly beside the actual landing, chances are you've got the right speed. If you're going to try the jump, use the same speed that you did to land beside the landing ramp. Keep your weight over the center of the bike, standing on the balls of your feet, with your knees and elbows slightly bent. Do not stare at your front fender or the take off ramp. Focus on the landing ramp. Get to the correct speed before you get to the takeoff ramp, let off the gas briefly then "blip" it as you are leaving the ramp. This will drive you off the ramp so that you can get the bike on the proper angle for the landing. If you are flying front end high, you can tap the rear brake to get the front end down and/or get your upper body over the bars. If you are front end low, get over the back of the bike, pulling on the bars adding that ever familiar panic rev, which doesn't seem to do more than alert the people around you that you are about to crash your brains out or have a near miss. Ideally, you don't need to use the rear brake or the panic rev to land the jump. Table tops are much more forgiving. You can land them a little short. Then just keep hitting them faster until you are able to nail the landing. You have to be careful on how steep the landing is though. If it is a steep landing you need to be cautious. You don't want to just drop the front wheel down over the landing because next comes an endo. Given that riding styles and tracks in motocross are highly individualized, it is difficult for me to convey on paper the 'proper technique" for body positioning, gearing, and solutions to various obstacles. What I have outlined here are basic techniques that most people are familiar with. If you are truly struggling with a particular jump or you just would like to get some pointers, you might want to try questioning the faster riders at the races or even take a few classes at a motocross school. I hope the above referenced babble has come in handy to some wayward motocross soul. If so my job here is done. If not, it is really great filler for the paper. Enjoy the ride...

Tyler Stacey from Akron, PA is our Holeshot Hotshot for the month of August. Tyler pulled the holeshot in the first moto at Sleepy Hollow MX on a scorching hot day in August. Let's all give Tyler credit for a job well done, Tyler's bike broke before the racing even started, and he still managed to pull the Holeshot on his buddies 'Loaner' Lem. Way to go Tyler, for the past couple months, you've worked really hard to earn the 'Holeshot Hotshot' Honors. Keep up the great work. Watch out next month, maybe you'll be the next MRA Hotshot.
