Hello Race Fans!
Happy Labor Day everybody !! What a great holiday. We all get to celebrate our jobs. More so than that we get to celebrate the fact that we live in a free country and can choose the jobs that we want. I’ll go even one better than that. We get extra time off of our jobs to go racing. Is that cool or what ? I know, all of your relatives are saying, hey it’s a holiday - let’s have a barbeque. Just tell them that you are, only you’re going to do it at the track, “why don’t you come along because the racing is going to be hot.” It doesn’t matter what your discipline, this weekend is full of racing action. I’m sure that no matter where you live there is something big going on close by. There are Memorial Flat Track races, and State Hare Scramble races and District Point races. No matter what you like it’s out there for you. So enjoy the fact that your labors are being rewarded and find a race near you. Check out the cover of this month’s issue, we have another D6 National Flat Track Champion. Cory Texter of Lancaster Harley Davidson brought home the gold in two classes this year. Check out his profile on page 18. Also in the amateur national ranks, Jason Lawrence from Estell Manor, NJ won the 125 A Pro Sport class last month at Loretta Lynns. Congratulations to both.
I’d like to congratulate all the locals that made the trek to the Nationals this year. As always it takes a ton of commitment and hard work to get there. No matter what the results while there, you are all champions. We would like to thank you all for tuning in to this months edition of Motorcycle Racing Action. We appreciate that you read us month in and month out. As always we welcome your comments and suggestions. We need to know what you want to see, so drop us a line. All of our contact info is listed here on this page or you can log onto the web at www.mcracingaction.com. One last thing, please remember to support the advertisers in MRA. They are truly the ones that support the great sport of motorcycle racing. If you stop by the business’ of any of the advertisers in MRA or when you see them at the track, please thank them for supporting your sport. And Jeeze, before you know it we’ll be talking about Christmas. It’s only a couple a days away, you know how time flies.
Until next time.

Chase Aiosa from Baltimore, MD is the latest MRA / Kenda Tire Holeshot Hotshot. Chase and his younger brother Cole reside in Maryland and they race all over the region. They like to travel to the Flying Dutchmen to compete where we’ve seen them race both MX and Hare Scrambles events. We even bumped into them last month racing their first Short track at the Timonium fairgrounds. Chase started riding just last year on a Honda 50. Buy the middle of the year he began riding the KTM Mini Adventure and he was able to finish third in the PA State Series while finishing in the top 5 in District 6 points. Chase did some arena cross racing over the winter of 2004 and in the spring of this year he won the 1st Annual Andrew Snyder Memorial Race at Budds Creek in the 4-8 oil division. Chase has began riding his 65 this year, he has been attending MX Schools and he is a mentor to his younger brother Cole. Holeshots you ask ? Yes he has been pulling a few, Chase has a total of 21 holeshots in 24 starts this year. I’d say he qualifies for Hot Shot status. Keep an eye on this young man, he is progressing very fast and he has some pretty big plans ahead. Chase will be competing in the 4 Stroke National and The Maryland State Championships at Budds Creek and next year plans to attack the MDRA Series. We wish the best to both Chase and Cole in their future racing endeavors and you should watch out next month. Who knows, you just might be the next Kenda Tire Holeshot Hotshot. Jim Bull MRA
Jake Runkles MDRA Race Series
Age: 9 Hometown: Sykesville, MD District #: 270 Ride: KTM Pro Senior, RM 65 Class: 50 (7-8) A, 60cc (7-11) C Experience: 5 years racing Hobbies: Playstation and I like to race Fav. Food: Taco’s Fav. Racer: Davi Millsaps Sponsors: Runkles Contracting, 5150 Clothing, AFAM, Creative Graphics,
Goat Eyewear, M2R Helmets, MX Bonz, No Fear, Pro Grip, Six Six One, Twin Air.
Future goals: To go back to Loretta’s.
Jake Runkles is our newest MDRA Hotshot. We’ve been watching Jake race for a couple of years now and it seems he is usually in the front of the pack. Jake is a hard worker and he gets his training and inspiration from his dad Rick, a former racer himself. Rick spent 18 years traveling the circuit and now enjoys passing his experience onto his son. Two years ago Jake went to Lorettas where he finished 18th overall in the Oil Injected division. Since then he has been riding hard and racing every weekend. Jake joined the MDRA this year and he is doing quite well for himself. He’s racing his last year on a 50 where he currently sits in first place in the 50cc (7-8) A division. No surprise though, anytime someone can spend 5 years at the 50cc level and they work as hard as Jake does they are bound to do well. Jake jumped up to a 65cc machine this year also and he is adapting real well to the bigger bike. He took his riding experience and ability and applied it to the faster bike and he is currently sitting in second place in the 65cc (7-11) C division. Thanks to the MDRA young racers can move up a division and compete at their current level and ability. It is an awesome avenue for young racers to get their feet wet and a place where young experienced riders can grow and let their talents develop. If your in the neiborhood come check out an MDRA event and while you’re there check out young Jake Runkles. You’ll see why we awarded him the MDRA Hot Shot honors and watch out next month, who knows, you just might be the next MDRA Hot Shot. Jim Bull MRA

July 17, 2005 • Photos by Jim Mucklin Photography - ejmucklin@adelphia.net The Lowdown – according to Jim Mucklin Photography. I sat at Esther’s and it poured on Sunday morning. I got a lot of stuff at the mini track in practice, the kids couldn’t make it past the finish line turn it was so deep. Jere scrapped big piles of mud to get it down to where they could pack it. I did the first 9 moto’s on the big track, got 1st, 2nd and third place finishers each moto. The rain stopped and the humidity came out big time. I went back to the mini track and got the rest of the races there, the track got real good. Only one major crash in the 100cc but they got up and rode on. Back to the big track, they were hitting the grandstand jump and the landings were a little slick. I didn’t have the heart to shoot some of it, I had one 125cc rider crash right in front of me and it took my breath away. Back to racing, I think it was 3rd to the last moto, the number 2 and 3 position tangled and stall at the bottom corner and couldn’t get restarted and just about everyone passed them. Eric Swarr and another rider battle the whole moto in the 4 stroke class for second, but everyone kind of held their positions and tried to stay up. 7h- B. Huntzinger won his first moto by a big lead, 69 Higgins’s son had his dad’s bike
out in Schoolboy, 360 Sparr is someone to look out for. 4-pm the mini big hole shot, big win # 25Tim Savage- 2nd moto, big air big win. But watch out for 22r Mr. Roth is right there. VET C 99 Mike Cepress, held off 8d-Decarolos to win, this was a good race, the last two laps he got close. And the final race 64 B Weindel and (I think it was 76 go at it) he holds him off to win. It was probably one of the best races, but everyone had left. Attention Racers - Jim has been out at the tracks taking 100’s of great shots while providing pictures for us to use in the paper this season. Please thank Jim if you see him for catching all of the great racing action this year. And be sure to check out his photo albums, there’s a good bet you may be in there and the prices are very reasonable too. Make sure you’re at Sleepy for their Labor Day Points race. There is extra cash and trophies being sponsored by ECS Honda. Motographx will be at the track offering special deals and Sleepy will be offering their normal great payouts in the expert divisions thanks to Blockers and PR2. This race will pay D6 Championship Points and Manufactures Contingency, we’ll see you then.
David Nyzio (781) and Jason Wolfgang (393) battle in expert racing action.
Alfred DeCarolos (8d) leads the way in Vet C. DeCarolos would go second on the day behind Mike Cepress.
Patrick Chilmonik races in the 50cc stock division.
Shay Honeywell podiums in third in 90cc Production Mod. Quad
Jimmy McIlvaine from Englishtown, NJ wins both Vet A and 250 A.
Thank you for Reading MRA! Noah Curtis sweeps the Vet B division.

Round 9: Broome-Tioga Sports Center • By Jim P. Sanderson • Binghamton, NY, July 10, 2005
The newest and biggest motocross series to hit the east coast in years, The Ultimate motocross Series, came to the beautiful Broome-Tioga Sports Center in Binghamton, New York for round nine of the series sponsored by MSR, Pro Taper, RRP and Answer Racing. The series features over $20,000 in cash and prizes. Besides the great purse and contingencies, riders got to ride the full National track layout, the same track that the best professional motocross riders will be riding in August when BroomeTioga hosts round 10 of the 2005 AMA Motocross Championship series. Factory RED Bull KTM’s newest Pro riders, Mike and Jeff Alessi came out to race round nine of the Ultimate Series and get some seat time and experience on the Broome-Tioga National track in preparation for their return in August. The KTM factory riders were in town for the Unadilla National on the following weekend in New Berlin, New York, about an hour east of BroomeTioga. RRP’s up and coming young expert rider, Ronnie Stewart topped the 250 Open Pro/ Expert podium with his 1-3 rides. Casey Clark took runner-up with a 4-1 and Andrew Pingotti closed out the podium with a 2-4 tally. Jeff Alessi led the start of the first 250 Pro/Expert moto but had mechanical problems before he reached the second turn. Clark inherited the lead with RRP’s Jeremy Cook, Stewart, Pingotti and Darren Edsall in tow. Clark quickly pulled away to a four second lead by the start of lap two. A half lap later Clark had a problem on the backside of the National hill and dropped to fifth. Cook, Stewart, Pingotti and Edsall advanced. Clark caught and passed Edsall
on the following lap taking fourth. On lap four, Stewart came off the National hill in the lead. Clark moved back into second. Cook was relegated to third. But at the base of the hill Clark went wide and stalled his thumper, dropping to fifth again. Stewart held on to take the win with a seven second advantage. Pingotti, Edsall, Clark and Cook rounded out the top five. Clark, unsurprisingly, nailed the holeshot in the final 250 Pro/expert moto followed by Stewart, Edsall, Pingotti, and Cook. Clark pulled away to a five second lead by the start of lap two, increased it to seven on lap three, nine on lap four, finally taking the checkers after eight laps with a whopping 20 second advantage. Cook, Stewart, Pingotti and Edsall followed. Logan Ehrets led the start on the first 50cc 7-8-class moto and rode wire to wire for the win, taking the checkers just four seconds ahead of Bethany Ruhf. Danny Colachino, Kayla Boorom and Joshua Backus followed. Ehrets led the final moto start with Colachino, Ruhf, Boorom and Backus trailing. On lap two Ehrets went down handing the point to Ruhf who held on to take the win and the overall. Ehrets did all he could to come back but ran out of time. Colachino, Boorom and Backus rounded out the top five. Ruhf topped the podium with a 2-1 to Ehrets 1-2 and Colachino closed out the podium with his consistent 3-3 tally.
KTM’s newest Pro Riders Mike and Jeff Alessi came out to race…
Factory Red Bull KTM’s Jeff Alessi (801) leads the start of the 1st 250 Pro/Expert moto with Casey Clark (161) and RRP’s Jeremy Cook (360) in tow at round 9 of the Ultimate Series at the Broome-Tioga Sports Center in Binghamton, New York on July 10th.
Logan Ehrets (98) leads the start of the 1st 50cc 7-8 moto with Bethany Ruhf (partially hidden) and Danny Colachino (177) trailing at round 9 of the Ultimate Series at Broome-Tioga on July 10th.

Miles Mountain – The Perfect Family Moto-Adventure Recently the folks at Miles Mountain invited a few Pagoda members to their track for a private roosting session. The overall experience was in a word awesome and I’d like to share it with you here. Let me start by saying that People make all the difference. I’ve never met a nicer bunch of folks in my entire life. Mike and Philip “Miles” Egleston along with Kevin Krueger and all the staff are as enthusiastic, dedicated, and proud of their facility as they are humble. I’ve witnessed first hand how well they treat their customers on practice day and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Miles Mountain is set among the beautiful rolling North Central farmlands of Elkland, Pennsylvania. It’s the perfect blend of “old school” natural terrain Motocross with just enough modern technical sections to keep it interesting. The main MX track is simply spectacular. It’s truly vast and well laid out with plenty of off track space to watch the action. The sandy topsoil surface (that’s right I said topsoil) is easily groomed, holds the moisture, and offers terrific traction. It’s wide enough to allow 3 or 4 lines in each turn and at just under 1.5 Miles in length takes full advantage of over 300 feet of elevation change. Track features include long straights and third gear sweepers, safe natural terrain jumps, beautiful table-tops,
tall gear pulling up-hills, long gentle down hills, shady wooded sections, along with a few technical jumps the pro’s will love. All which help to make this a very, very fun place to be...in third or 4th gear mainly. If you’re a B or Pro Expert rider you’ll love the high speed, technical sections, and overall rhythm of the track. If you’re a C or mini rider then this is the place where you’ll be racing the competition, not the track. Another high point for lesser skilled riders: I promise this will be the place where you finally get comfortable enough to “air it out” over any one of spectacular and safe natural terrain jumps. The SX track is rhythm city with about 70% airtime. Though technical as the name implies it won’t bite you too hard and provides a great place to work on your timing. The best part is that it’s fully lighted so racing can continue well into the night. Another
advantage to the SX track is that it’s a great place for the kids to play ride while they’re waiting their turn on the MX track. The Mini track is just the right place for the kids. There are gradual hills, small tabletops, rolling doubles, and plenty of bailout areas to play on. Perhaps the best part is that it’s located smack dab in the middle of the MX track. This is a huge help for those of you with young riders as you can easily check on jr. as you come around each lap. No expense was spared in the construction and planning of this facility either. From the three-story scoring tower, to the lighting on the Supercross Track, to thousands of cubic yards of topsoil, to the grooming and watering equipment, to the expansive and flat parking area, this place has all the makings and size of a National caliber facility. The typical weekend events schedule is simply fantastic and is part of what makes it so worth the drive. Nearly every race weekend starts on Friday evening with free camping. Then there’s Saturday practice from 10 – 4, Saturday Night Supercross under the lights, and finally Sunday MX. Much more Moto than most can handle in a weekend. On top all that that they offer special package pricing on multiple class entries to help keep your costs down and, get this, they usually schedule an entire class race for free. This is also the perfect place for some
on s a e MidS te Upda Miles Mountain is fast becoming one of the most talked about tracks this season! With so many great track improvements and exceptional racing events, coupled with your help our rider base has been growing each and every race. We want every one to have an opportunity to race at the mountain, so we are extending our second class for free for anyone who hasn’t been here before on August 13 &14th, September 3 and 4 , & October 1 & 2 . quality “family time”. Aside from the typical camping and riding experience there are plenty of options for the entire family to enjoy should they get bored watching you roost the day away. Just a few miles north is the historic town of Corning, NY and I highly recommend visiting the Corning Glass Museum. If fishing’s your family game there are two reservoirs nearby with easy shore access. There is also a local stream where you can wet a line or take a swim. The kids can visit the cows and horses, catch frogs, and if that’s not enough I’m sure if you ask nicely Mike would be happy to point you in the right direction for some prime hiking and mountain biking activities. Did I mention camping out under the stars, barbeque, and roasting marshmallows by the campfire? Like I said its a great family Moto-adventure. Any way you can’t loose. So there you have it. One mans opinion of Miles Mountain MX. So stop what your doing…pack up the wife, kids, nephews, neighbors, tents, bikes, bicycles, fishing poles, barbeque, etc. and make the trip to Miles Mountain. You and your family are going to love it. Tell them Pagoda Bob sent you. Thanks, Bob Monko, Pagoda Motorcycle Club
RD#10 • Ultimate MX Series • Photos by Matt Wozney www.holeshotgraphics.com Blue Diamond Park hosted Round # 10 of the Ultimate MX Series sponsored by MSR/ Answer Racing, Pro Taper, Rossini Racing Products and Kenda Tires. The Ultimate Series is new to the East Coast this year and proves to be one of the best payouts available to racers in the area. The series has been slow to catch on, but racers take heed. The sponsorship behind the Ultimate is second to none; I would suggest taking a look at this series and what it can offer you. Their website lists valuable information and can be found on the back page of this issue. If you need further information you can contact the professionals at Rossini Racing Products, their number is (908) 4548800. The next round of the Ultimate is run in conjunction with the D6 Points race at Sleepy Hollow on September 5, 2005. Also, be sure to get back to Blue Diamond Park in the month of September, they are hosting a Delmarva Series race on September 4th and they’ll have Round # 11 of the MDRA Race Series on September 25th.

happy ramblers
Round #8 • MDRA Race Series • Photos by John Benson The MDRA came to Pennsylvania for round # 8 of their 12 round series at the Happy Ramblers MC Club. The day started off with the high-revving 125 A and B Classes. With Wile, Johnson, Toth, Stella, Welch, Meyers, Jones and Yentzer showcasing their talents in close racing action. Stephen Stella would get the overall in the A class with David Callahan taking the checkers in the B class. Even though the day was sunny and bright, there was a Storm brewing on this day at Happy Ramblers and his name was Storm Sheckells. Storm raged in his 60 and 85 classes pulling two hole shots, three moto victories and a second place ending his birthday with the overall win. Kyle King also made his mark as he passed Storm for the lead during the first 85 moto only to have Storm over take him on the last lap. Dylan Thomas, another fast rider, took the victory
in the second moto in the 85 Class. The action was extremely competitive in all classes with close side by side racing as was displayed in the 125 C class between Broc Schmelyun and Addison Kramer with Kramer coming out on top in the end. Speaking of action, Action Motorsports of York, Pa was the race sponsor for the day. If you’re looking for a place to do your motocross business give AMS a try. The folks at Happy Ramblers will be taking the month of September off, but be sure to head on back in October for a D6 Championship Points race with contingencies. It will be a round of the Ultimate MX series and is being sponsored by Cumberland Kawasaki of Carlisle, PA. John Benson
James Thompson (456) races to a third in the 125 B division.
It’s Addison Kramer (103) by a wheel over Broc Schmelyun (111) in 125 C racing action.
Zachary Lahman (14) chases Brice Russell (421) in Oil Injected racing action.
Steven Good from Grottoes, VA places third in Junior Mini. Ryan Mould (250) leads the School Boy class thru the first turn. Dan Holton (70) would go on for the win.
Shenandoah Honda’s Edgar Davis busts the Heel Clicker at Happy.
Cody Lunceford sweeps the 85cc (12-15) B class.
Vet C holeshot - Ralph Edwards (46) wins the overall.

timonium outdoor series Timonium Fair Grounds • August 3, 2005 • Photos by MRA
Joey Parks wins the 125 division.
The Baltimore County Trail Riders and the Cockeysville Optimist Club hosted Round # 3 of their Outdoor Short Track Series at the Timonium Fairgrounds on August 3, 2005. Over 175 riders came out on a Wednesday evening to compete including 32 racers on oil injected 50cc motorcycles. Five heats had to be run to determine the starting grid for the main event. Tell me this sport doesn’t have a great future, Colton Smith would be your eventual winner in this division. The racing action on the big bikes was just as hot, Jason Isennock got the night started winning the Sportsman main just as he had in the opening round of the series. Factory Suzuki racer Kevin Varnes came to town and worked his magic in the 450 / Open A Stock Frame division. Varnes made
it look easy as he led from start to finish. Varnes came out in the mod frame division but this time it would be Chris Klinefelter getting out to the early lead. Varnes moved quickly into second but Klinefelter was just too smooth for Varnes to catch him. In 65cc racing action young Jeremiah Snow got a heat race win on his 10th birthday, but in the main event it would be Joey Schmidt (19) nailing the light and just blowing away the rest of the pack to the first turn. Schmidt would hold on for the win. In the 85cc ranks, Danny Bromley won the younger group with Shayna Texter getting the win in 12-15 and in the 125 division Joey Parks established himself as the man to beat as he takes the win by two bike lengths.
The 50 adult main was loaded with talent as usual. First round winner Corey Hormes mixed it up with Lancaster HD’s Cory Texter. Texter was able to get Hormes on the last lap right as they crossed the finish line for the win. This is the 11th year that the BCTRA has successfully run this series with no end in site. Each year in July and August they host 6 rounds of racing on the 1/10 mile pony ring. For some of the best racing action money can buy, stay tuned to MRA to see what year 12 will bring. Before we get there though, remember the BCTRA holds the Timonium Winter Series inside the walls of the Cow Palace in early December. Again, stay tuned to the pages of MRA or check their website at www.bctra.com.
The Adult 100 racing action was red hot.
Joey Schmidt (19) wins the 65cc 7-11 main.
The Timonium Outdoor Series benefits Cystic Fibrosis.
Danny Bromley wins 85 (7-11).
Mike Bell Racings Jimmy Hollister is smooth as silk on his way to the 30 + win.
50’s waiting for the light. Samantha Resch (2) chases Josee Stedding (32) in Womens racing action.
Austin Greenland (8a) leads Cory Texter and Shawn Baer in expert racing action.

Cory Texter
2005 Grand National Champion • 400 & 600 Modified Divisions MRA would like to feature Cory Texter from Willow Street, PA. Cory is your 2005 Grand National Champion in both the 400 and 600 Modified divisions. The Grand National Dirt Track Championships were held at the Illinois State Fairgrounds July 3-10, 2005. Regional champions from all over the country return to Springfield each year to see will be crowned champion. We caught up with Cory after he returned home and this is what he had to say: Name: Cory Texter Age: 17 Hometown: Willow Street, PA
MRA: So Cory, how does it feel to be a National Champion? CT: It feels pretty good. I wanted to do
it for my dad and our sponsors more than for me. But I just want to keep learning more and progressing as I have been. MRA: How long have you been racing? CT: I have been racing for 12 years or so but steadily for the last 3 years. MRA: Do you remember your first race? CT: Yeah, my first race was at TrailWay Speedway when I was 4 years old on a pw50. MRA: How did you do? CT: I think I got 3rd or something like that. MRA: Do you race anything other than Flat Track?
CT: I have raced a couple hare scrambles and I tried motocross but I don’t like it near as much as flat track. I think I am going to try supermoto soon and maybe road racing. MRA: What inspires you to race? CT: The will to win. MRA: Do you have a favorite racer? CT: I like both Chris Carr and Nicky Hayden
MRA: What’s your favorite food? CT: Pizza. MRA: What else do you like to do? CT: I like to ride pit bikes and hang out with my friends. MRA: Have you won any other championships over the years? CT: In 2004 I was the district 6 and 7 champion in many classes and I won a bunch of track championships. And earlier this year I won the 400 Mod. class at the Winter Short Track Nationals in Florida. MRA: Any future goals? CT: Yes, for next year I want to win the Pro-Sport championship. MRA: What’s next in your racing career? CT: I am turning Pro-Sport next year and then I hope to turn GNC level expert. MRA: How about your sponsors? CT: Lancaster Harley-Davidson, My Dad and Grandpop, Our mechanics Rich and Larry, Steve Connelly, Bromleys Suzuki and KTM, Dons Kawasaki, B&B Yamaha and KTM, PR2, Wiseco Pistons, Monster Plates, Cometic Gaskets, Millenium Technologies, Motion Pro. MRA: Anything else? CT: I really want to thank my sponsors for all the help because I could not have done it without them. MRA: Good Luck Cory. CT: Thanks a lot for the opportunity Jim.

It was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen in all my eight years. It had a pretty red gas tank, silver rims, a plush black seat, a swept-down exhaust pipe and chrome handlebars with soft rubber hand grips. As it sat under the Christmas tree that year, the red, blue and green lights reflected off the shiny chrome parts like a thousand sparks dancing from the logs in the fireplace. I can still remember how proud I was to have my own minibike. It was the best Christmas present any boy ever received. Dad, do you remember how we talked Mom into letting me try it out that day, even though the snow was at least a foot deep? And how I spent the whole afternoon going around in circles in our garage? Boy! Mom was sure upset and worried. I’ll bet you really got a good lecture for buying it for me. I didn’t think spring was ever going to come that year, and when it finally arrived I can remember Mom fussing because I wore all the grass off a trail around the yard. I was the envy of every boy in the neighborhood. Hey Dad, I can still see Mom now, the day I crashed and hurt my ankle and had to go to the doctor. I thought that was the end of my motorcycling right then and there, but you always came through. It took a lot of fancy talking, but you finally convinced her that with the correct boots, leathers, a helmet and gloves I would be practically indestructible. Boy, motorcycling was fun in those days! It was the summer when I was nine that you entered me in my first race. It was at a short track outside of town at the motorcycle club grounds. It was on a Saturday night and I can still remember how nervous I was then. I remember I got a good start and was leading the pack for a couple of laps before I crashed into the wall. I thought you were going to get run over trying to get to me. Oh well, so much for the finals that night. You were still proud and grinning ear to ear when I came back and got a fifth in the consolation race. I remember you bought me a hamburger and milk shake on the way home, and we stayed up half the night making future plans, re-riding the race and admiring our trophy. By the way you talked, anyone would have thought I had just won the National championship. I was the happiest boy in the world that night. It was several fourths and fifths and numerous crashes before you decided that I needed a new and larger bike. I was really proud of it, but I couldn’t seem to do any better than I did on the old one. It seemed to get a little harder each time I raced. Then you thought that we needed a faster machine and had a lot of engine work and porting done to it. It seemed like cheating to have it bored out over the size limit of the class I was riding in. You said that it wasn’t cheating because everyone else was doing it. I didn’t really understand at the time. Nothing really helped much; even the special lightweight frame and those new type tires didn’t make much difference in the
positions in which I was finishing. I was trying as hard as I could and I knew you were spending a lot of money. I started feeling like I was letting you down. I didn’t think thirds and fourths were all that bad. Dad, when you started jumping on the referee and other officials when I lost, I could really see how much it meant to you and I was determined to try even harder. A 10-year-old boy has a hard time understanding how important it is to win, and I was trying as hard as I could, Dad, honest. I remember when I was 11, they started giving points to all the riders, and at the end of the season they gave awards for the way you placed in the district. I tried really hard that year and won fourth place. Dad, you looked so disappointed in me for not winning an award, I could hardly hold back the tears.
“Boy, motorcycling was fun in those days!” If you had just known how hard it is to remember all the things you told me to do, while I was racing and in a power slide and fighting traffic all around. It’s very hard to think, Dad, when you are scared stiff. Oh, I wasn’t scared of the racing. I was scared I would make a dumb mistake and you would start yelling and embarrassing me, in front of the other riders. I was so afraid of upsetting you my stomach was tied in knots. I felt like asking you to show me how to race instead of yelling instructions at me all the time, but you could never do any better than I could and I didn’t want to hurt you. Boy, I wish we could go back and have fun like we used to. I guess there can be no more races like our first ones. Somehow, all the fun’s gone out of it. I know, Dad, when you were little you never had the chance to have a bike and race, and I know how hard you had to work as a child, but this isn’t fun anymore, either. I know you don’t realize what you are doing, and I’m sure if you did you wouldn’t push me so hard. I hate to see Mom cry when you fuss at me on the way home from the races. Sometimes I think it hurts her more than it hurts me. Now you have me riding two different classes, and things have gotten so bad I wish I had never seen a motorcycle. I have tried to tell you what you are doing to me but you just don’t listen. I’m 13 now and feel like I am 30. I am so nervous when you are around, I feel like running away. I find myself wishing I could get hurt in a race so maybe you would let me stop. I can see no other way to get out of racing. I’m sorry, Dad. I have done the best that I could. I have tried hard and yet I still could not please you. Dad, I just cannot be what you wish you could have been.

Tech Tips
This month I’d like to tell you about a nifty little tool in my toolbox that makes life a bit easier. It’s a pair of masterlink pliers made by Motion Pro. It’s simply a standard looking pair of linesman’s pliers, but one nose is slightly longer than the other. This makes the job of removing and installing master links so much easier. Of course, some of the savvy racers use riveted master links, but most of us still have the good old clip. Don’t forget, the closed end of your masterlink always points in the direction of chain movement. The pliers are available through most motorcycle distributors, so if you’re local shop doesn’t have a pair, they can easily order them for you. While we’re on the subject of chains, I’ll also take a minute to talk about chain sag. Some riders are confused about how much sag to run in their chains. To completely take the guesswork out of your chain sag, please refer to the diagram. When both your sprockets and swingarm pivot bolt are in a straight line, that is the longest distance your sprockets will be from each other. Therefore, that is the tightest point of your chain. You can have a friend sit on your bike, use a tie-down, or do this when your shock is removed. When all three points are in a straight line, your chain should still have a very slight amount of play. Adjust your chain and then when you place your bike back on a stand, observe that amount of chain sag. If you always adjust your chain to this amount, you’ll be sure you’re not over tightening your chain. questions or comments? email me at techtips@gapracing.com

Flying dutchmen mc August 7, 2005 • Photos by MRA
August 7, 2005 the Flying Dutchmen hosted yet another round of their summer motocross series. As usual the racing action was red hot on the mini track. Some of the best racing on the day was found in the 65cc 10-11 group. Brad Roth got out to the early lead but the battle for third was intense. Positions were swapped and in the end it was Roth with the win followed by Matthew Croft and William Carling. Other great mini racing on the day included Zach Schnitzler and Trent Noll in the XR 70/80 class. The two would swap moto wins with Schnitzler coming out on top in the end. The Dutchmen had a good crowd with over 400 racers coming out. The action on the big track was just as intense as down below. The heat was up and so was the crowd down at the swimming hole. For a great day of racing that the whole family can enjoy, the Dutchmen is the place. Their next event and last motocross of the season will be Sunday September 4th on Labor Day weekend. It is a D6 Points race along with Factory Contingencies and it is being sponsored by Lebanon Valley Cycles. There will be double track points and speed racer sculptures. For the rest of the season the folks at the Flying Dutchmen covert their facility into a wide open Hare Scramble course. They combine the two tracks and add a wood section and will continue racing into the end of November. If you’d like to give something different a try and test your endurance, come on out to the Dutchmen and see how you do. Check their ad here in MRA for a full schedule of events.

Racers
Edge…
Excuse me while I apply the correct torque value to these Hexaform compression devices. That sounds very impressive but really It’s just a fancy way of saying I’m tightening a nut. I should have worked for a government agency. After the invention of the wheel I feel that the invention of the threaded fastener did more for moving mankind forward technologically than anything else. Once we were able to fasten things together it gave us the ability to make larger more complex things. The first fastener was probably animal skin which we formed into strips and used to affix arrowheads or the like. Then came wooden pegs then metal nails I’m not sure at what point threaded fasteners arrived on the scene but it was probably long before we think. But arrive they did and thank god because with out them all those snap on tools would have been a real waste of money. Practically every component on our bikes is affixed, retained and sealed using a threaded fastener. They come in a variety of sizes from the smallest 3 or 4mm screw holding our master cylinder reservoir covers all the way up to our
22mm rear axles. The stronger the joint we need to create the larger the fastener. Regardless of size all fasteners behave the same as they are tightened, they stretch and behave like a very stiff spring in tension. This is why it is critical that they be tightened to the correct torque. Now I’m not saying that every nut and bolt should be tightened with a torque wrench. Most people are capable of arriving at or near the correct torque value just by feel. If you under torqued it it will probably vibrate loose and fall out, if you over torque it it will either snap while tightening or sometime later while in use. All bolts of the same size are not tightened to the same torque. There are factors such as the bolts length the material the bolt is constructed from and the threaded hole itself. Your shop manual will give you a listing of the correct torque values for nearly every fastener on your bike. All the bolts and screws on todays bikes are for the most part steel. There are different grades of steel used and the higher the grade the stronger the bolt. For the most part our fasteners are mid to upper grade in strength a detail which has been worked out by the factory to ensure safety and functionality at the most cost effective level. The torque will be listed in Foot/Pounds as well as N/m (Newton Meters) and M-Kg (Meters per Kilogram) most torque wrenches we have access to will be graduauted in Foot/Pounds. The

term foot pounds refers to the pressure exerted on the fastener upon tightening. If we were trying to achieve 40 ft. pounds and our ratchet was 1 foot in length then a weight of 40 lbs applied to the end would achieve this value. A ratchet 2 feet in length would require 20 lbs and so on. Also to acquire an accurate torque the threads should be clean and lubricated. When torquing the cylinder heads on four strokes they also require that the flange of the bolt and the washer be lubricated with oil or an assembly lube. This assures that a false torque value is not arrived at due to frictional losses in the threads or the bolts flange. Now a couple of recommendations. Any steel bolt screwed into an aluminium thread should be anti seized using either a copper or moly paste to prevent galling. I run into this more often than I care to. We install a lot of long rod kits for racing in the Yamaha Blasters and as such must replace the cyl. base studs with longer ones. Any engine that is several years old will have a fair amount of corrosion on the studs. Sometimes when trying to remove the old studs they will at first loosen and then after a third of turn begin to tighten again, thats a dead give away that aluminium threads from the hole have seized onto the stud and now you are trying to drag them through the remaining threads. Nine times out of ten you will snap the stud. Removing broken bolts and studs is a royal pain and should be avoided at all costs. If you are hanging out with your buddy while he’s working on his bike and you hear him snap a bolt ( the sound is usually followed almost instantaneously by “Oh s**t!!) RUN ! As fast as your legs will carry you and put as much distance between you and that bolt as possible. But if you are one of those stick by your buddies types I think we are referred to as morons, then here are a few suggestions that might get you in bed before 3:00 AM. If the bolt was broken while tightening then there is a good chance that it will be loose in the threads. Craftsman sells a stud extractor drill set that Bob Vila hypes on the tele. It is designed to run in reverse so while its drilling into the bolt its also trying to turn it out. Everybody should have one of these in their toolbox, it has saved me a few times from an aneurism. The biggest problem with drilling out a broken bolt though is centre punching it for a starting point. Generally the remaining exposed portion of the bolt is not flat and is below the surface if there is some bolt left above the surface then take a file and make it flat before you centre punch it. If however it hasn’t violated all the laws of the universe take a Sharpie and try to put a dot in the exact centre of the bolt, when you feel you have achieved this then centre punch on this mark. Centre punching first and realizing you missed will only make the aneurism throb before bursting. In all honesty trying to drill the bolt with just a

hand drill is nearly impossible as you can never get the drill started straight. There are some fixtures you can buy from tool supply stores that will help but personally I prefer to rely on a drill press. Fixture the component up perpendicular to the drill and have at it, preferably with a new drill bit. A small drill first at a high drill speed to create a pilot hole, drill completely through the bolt then a larger drill size that will allow you to get an easy out in the hole. Fit the easy out and try turning the bolt out if it won’t move under a reasonable amount of pressure stop and apply heat with a propane torch, remember you are trying to heat the threads not the bolt so apply heat so as to minimize heating the bolt. If it still won’t move, STOP, do not risk breaking off the easy out, if you do then your only course of action is to make friends with someone who owns an EDM (Electrical Discharge Machine) and if you can’t convince him to marry your sister then you’ll probably have to pay him and using a $20,000. machine to remove a $2.00 bolt won’t be cheap. I need to start a new paragraph. So an easy out didn’t work so we get a bigger drill bit and drill through again and keep drilling until we have drilled out the whole bolt, this is why it was vitally important that we get that first hole started dead centre otherwise you break through one side of the bolt first after which it is impossible to keep drilling as the remaining steel bolt will simply push the drill off centre ovaling out the hole and creating a whole ‘nother problem. If we were on centre chances are we will still have buggered up the threads so we can try running a tap in to see if they will clean up if not then get a helicoil kit of the correct size and rethread it. As I stated earlier most people have enough feel to know when a bolt is tight but there are some who live by the axiom tighten it till it strips then back it off a quarter turn. For these people I do recommend a torque wrench, clicker or beam type, available at your local Sears store. In addition everyone should have in there tool box a 6x1.0 and 8x1.25 tap and tap handle, the craftsman extractor I mentioned earlier, a good set of drill bits preferably metric, 3/8” reversing drill, a centre punch, and lastly helicoil kits in 6x1.0 and 8x1.25 All these tools can be had for less than $200.00 and will be invaluable the first time you need them. In closing I need to mention that anytime you use tools you put yourself at risk of injury or even death. Always use common sense and protective clothing but if you are even remotely unsure of how to proceed carefully (and don’t presume that following the steps outlined in the above article will assure you come to no harm) then seek a qualified technician and have them perform the work. What a world we live in huh? Till next time keep the rubber side down and see you at the races.

Doublin Gap MX
RD#9 • MDRA Race Series • August 14, 2005 • Photos by MRA Doublin Gap MX Park hosted Round # 9 of the MDRA Race Series in mid August. Attendance was through the roof along with the temps and humidity. I have to give credit to all of the riders that have been out there week in and week out, as well as the families too. It has been hot and you are all winners. This round brought an evening barbeque to the track on Saturday night as well as a few MDRA Cheerleaders. The series has been very popular for the grilling crowd as well as the racers. The pits are lined with campers waiting for Sundays racing action to begin. At the Sunday riders meeting Rod Yentzer thanked the racers for supporting the MDRA in its first season. He also spoke about the upcoming year and what may be in store for the fastest growing series on the east coast. I believe good things are coming for the MDRA racers and its supporters. The racing action was hot as usual and this thing is going to come down to the wire. The points races are very tight and attendance is running at 85 % of the membership. That
means if you want to do well in your class you better be at all of the rounds. There are great payouts waiting at the end of the season and it’s hard to tell at this point what’s going to happen. The year end banquet and fun day will be held at the Happy Ramblers MC Club on October 15th. The awards are going to kick off around 11:00am followed by lunch and then an open practice. Tickets are available to all MDRA members and all are encouraged to come.

Behind The Helmet Flying Dutchmen MC • August 7, 2005
By Gary Gallagher Flying Dutchmen has always been one of my favorite tracks, seeing as it is within 2 hours of my house. It’s one of the two tracks that I started out racing on, and it was where I had my first moto win. Many people would have been pumped up, just like I was if they were away from the sport for an extended period of time. I had a real busy summer so far with surgery on my tonsils, and summer school. The weekend was going to be good as of Friday, but when I woke up on Sunday morning it was raining. On days like this I would normally give my mom a break, and tell her to go back to bed. Before I made my decision, I called one of my friends that had slept over at the track. When I called he told me it was raining very lightly, but was supposed to clear out early morning. That sounded great to me, so I loaded up my mom’s minivan with food and drinks for the day, all of my racing gear, and an extra set of clothes for when I was done racing. The trailer was also loaded with my gas and bike, and we began heading to the races. On the way up, it rained a good seventy five percent of the drive. The storm was strange because when I pulled onto route 895 the rain stopped. My mom. Little brother, and I all knew it would be a great day from that point on. After paying the entry fee, and signing up at the clubhouse, we parked our rig next to a good friend of mine, Steve Chiappa from Easton, PA. Just arriving next to him got me even more pumped up because I knew we were both running 250 “B”. As practice started I stayed in the pits, and the first thing I noticed was that it was a slop fest. Everybody coming off the track was covered in that infamous Dutchmen mud. Without a power washer handy, I was definitely glad that I didn’t go out for first practice. When I saw the Mini riders going to staging for their practice I began to suit up in my No Fear gear while my mom fueled up my 2001 Yamaha 426. The track was changing from the slop that it was originally, and began to look a lot drier.

Second practice was drier then the first one, but there were some sections with puddles still. It was nice riding the track for the first time since the new changes. I liked the new double double section, and was blown away by the length of the start. Overall I thought I could end up doing very well, especially if the track kept drying as the day progressed. By the time my first moto came around I had watched many great riders attack the rough, wet track at FDMC. I tried to watch the real fast guys lines and see if I could take them as well as they did. Sitting on the gate my heart began to beat what felt like a mile a second. My friend Steve pulled the holeshot, and took a commanding lead before the end of our moto. My luck wasn’t so good. I ended up in last place trying to keep up with all of the great riders in the 250/open B class.
I finished out the first moto in last place but kept my pace up. I was satisfied with this because of the long period of time that I was out of the sport. I knew it would take a while to get back up to speed with the competition, but I tried not to let it get into my head too much. A few minutes after I got off the track from my first moto, I went swimming in the creek behind FDMC. Seeing as it was a hot day, some ninety plus degrees, this swim was the ultimate refresher. Second moto came up real fast after my swim. In my mind I knew I wanted to see how I could do if I went all out for the second moto. Once I was lined up on the gate, I said my prayers for safety for the entire motocross community and started focusing on my start. The anticipation of the holeshot made every second seem like an eternity. My body got more and more nervous as the time passed by ever so slowly. When the gate dropped, it felt like my stomach was flip flopping all around inside of me. My start wasn’t too bad, the only problem was that I did not hold the throttle on long enough to pull the holeshot. I was in last place yet again, but stayed within one or two bike lengths of both second and third place. I raced my heart out that entire moto but just couldn’t get around the other two riders. It was a great day of racing, even if I didn’t win. There is something about the feeling when you race, almost like you are free. Steve grabbed the holeshot and the overall for the day with a 1 – 1 finish. I ended up last place with a 4 - 4 moto finish. In the end my mom always asks me two questions, did you have fun and did you get hurt. She looks at motocross the same way I do. If you had fun and didn’t get hurt what more could you ask for. Thanks to that race, I’ve been getting into the sport a lot more since my time off, and all week I dream about the upcoming race. Until next time, keep the rubber side down!
Rocket Raceway • Aug. 14, 2005 • By Jimmy Sprocket — Photos by Patty Shaw The GMER hosted round # 8 of the ECEA Hare Scramble Series at Rocket Raceway in Three Springs, PA.The day was balmy and hot with temps in the mid 90’s, but that didn’t stop the racers and race fans from coming out and supporting the sport that they love. As a matter of fact the racers and fans came in droves, we had 339 racers sign in for the events of which 145 were youth and peewee riders proving that this sport continues to grow! Racers came in from seven different states to participate in the days activities. The peewee and youth classes went first with Tegan Temple from West Chester, PA. taking the overall win from the 7-9 65cc class. Other winners included Tanner Barnhardt from Easton PA, Jesse Davis from Bear, DE and Adam Toth from Tamaqua, PA. In the youth classes Eric Rodgers was on the gas for the overall win from the 100cc 12-15 class. Justin Frederick from Spring City, PA won the 85cc 12-15 class with Kamaul Jorge taking the checkers from the 10-11 85cc group. As the day went on so did the heat but that didn’t stop Howard Mcdannell from notching the overall win from the 201-open C class. Sara Chapman from Pilesgrove, NJ took the win in the womens class and Dale Doty from Waynesboro, PA crossed in first in the Super Senior B class.
In the afternoon main William King from Downingtown would take the checkers for the overall win. Cory Rose won the 0-200 A class, with Timothy Rizzon winning the 201- open A class. The father and son team of Keith and Jarred Rodgers also found the podium making it three wins for the Rodgers family on this day. One great day of racing and a lot of dust due to the lack of rain in that part of the state, but all in all the race went well. We would like to thank all the staff at Rocket for working so hard , and owners Mark and Shelly Carlton for providing their facility for this event!
Efren George (924) and Alex Shaw (568) battle on the Rocket MX track. Chris Rizzon leads the charge in the 200 B division. Rizzon would take the win.

Rocket Raceway August 21, 2005 • Photos by MRA
On Sunday August 21 we landed at Rocket Raceway in Three Springs, PA. Rocket is a great facility with plenty of rolling natural terrain that will keep your big bore four stroke screaming for more. The big horsepower up hills will keep you on the gas and once you reach the top you can take that ride right down the other side. Unfortunately Rocket is at somewhat of a disadvantage to many other tracks. They are geographically located at the eastern edge of D5, the western edge of D6 and right above D7. On any given day you just may need to drive past another facility that may be racing, but believe me when I say ”It’s well worth the ride”. On this day Velocity Cycles from Mechanicsburg, PA put up an extra $500.00 to be divided between the 125 A and 250 A divisions. Things were starting to shape up nicely for an exciting 250 expert showdown. RRP’s Damien Plotts came to chase the cash along with Velocity’s Dustin Kendall.
On top of that, Pro Off Road Racer Ryan Rodgers made a rare MX appearance due to some down time on the GNCC circuit. In the end it would be Rodgers getting the overall. Kendall crashed in practice on Saturday and injured his wrist and was unable to go on Sunday. Plotts got the first moto win with Rodgers taking second. In the second moto Plotts got out in front again but ended up catching a hay bale on the edge of the track on a big down hill jump. Plotts went down and got tangled up with his bike; this let Rodgers by to go 2-1 for the overall. Many fast D6 mini guys made the trek to “Ride The Rocket” on this particular day. Names like Page, Maldet, Kinsley, Thompson, and Stevey were there in addition to another Rodgers. Ryan’s younger brother Eric, also a GNCC racer came along with the rest of his family for some rare moto experience. In the Open Mini division Rodgers would go 1-1 to sweep the class.
And probably the best racing of the day came in the 125 C and School Boy divisions. Two young Suzuki riders, again from different districts made the trip all worth the while. Derrick Grissinger from D5 and Jordan Moyer from D6 would go head to head all day long. They swapped leads and moto wins, but in the end it was all Grissinger. Moyer was able to get one moto win on the day with both overalls going to Grissinger. Rockets next event is a D7 Gold Series Race on September 25 and it is being sponsored by Yamaha of Camp Hill. Rocket is open for practice on Saturdays and Sundays, you can find them on the web at www.rocketraceway.com and to view complete event photos from today’s race check out www.mcracingaction.com.
Some of D6’s best mini riders came out to “Ride The Rocket”.
Off Road Racer Eric Rodgers sweeps the Open Mini division.
Rocket is a great facility with plenty of rolling natural terrain that will keep your big bore four stroke screaming for more.
Off Road Racer Ryan Rodgers wins the 250 A division along with expert cash sponsored by Velocity Cycles.
Jordan Moyer (424) and Derrick Grissinger (11g) battled all day long in both 125 C and School Boy. Grissinger gets both wins.
Velocity Cycles put up an extra $500 to be split among the premier expert classes.
Jimmy Sprocket uses up the suspension on his YZF on his way to victory in the Vet C division.
Damien Plotts came to Rocket Raceway to chase the expert purse. Dwayne Mallow wins the Quad B division.
