D6 racer Sean Knoll reading his MRA between motos at Evansville MX Park Stay Tuned Next Month To See Who Will Be CAUGHT IN THE ACT!
Readers log on to www.gapracing.com to see who else was “Caught in the Act”!
Hello Race Fans
track racing for all to enjoy. This months issue of MRA finds our one and only Amateur National Motocross Champion, Jarek Balkovic on the cover. Jarek’s been chasing that title for several years now and his efforts have finally paid off. Check our feature also in this issue and see who else scored in the top 10 at the big show. This months issue also features the AMA National Hare Scramble from Rausch Creek. Read all about it and see how that race came down to the wire after 3 hours in the brutal heat and dust of August in Central PA. Of course we have plenty of great local race coverage along with all of the regular features that you’ve become used to finding in our pages.
Happy Labor Day everybody. Does that mean we are suppossed to be happy about labor? Or the fact that we get an extra day off from laboring? I’d say any weekend that we get extra racing in the schedule, is a good weekend to be happy about. I know most of the kids probably aren’t so happy. The Monday after Labor Day most schools go back in session and the swimming pools close up. It’s also the official ending of summer which is a real drag, Wow, I’m starting to get bummed just writing about it. I’m still sticking with the extra racing story, that should brighten all our days. And this Labor Day weekend is full of it. No matter how you do it, there are plenty of places to do it at. Check the upcoming event schedule elsewhere in this issue. There’s lot’s of mx, a local GNCC and some flat
Also this month and for some of you it may be the biggest race of the century. Don’t forget about the MX of Nations at Budds Creek in late September. It’s only the second time ever that this event has touched our shores and the biggest names in motocross will be there. Check this issue for a short preview. Ultimate racers remember, that same weekend is a D6 points race at Pagoda. depending where you stand may determine where you go. Well, it’s been a great season, not that it’s over yet. We still have a few more months left in the schedule depending on your discipline and which series that you follow. From the looks of things, next year is going to offer even more choices for the local racer. Stay tuned to MRA for all the exciting details. Until next time. Jim Bull, MRA

FIM MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS A brief history and a look ahead By Heartland Media and Events
The Motocross of Nations is the premier motocross event sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and features an annual competition among National teams fielded by many of the FIM’s affiliated federations. Established in post-war Europe in 1947, the famed event has run uninterrupted since that time. The 61st renewal of the world’s longestrunning motocross championship will be held September 22-23, 2007, in scenic Southern Maryland, at Budds Creek Motocross Park. This will mark just the fourth time in all those years that the Motocross of Nations has ventured beyond Europe…the others were New York State in 1987, Western Australia in 1992 and tropical Brazil in 1999. The Motocross of Nations typically attracts teams from about 30 nations and six continents. The most successful nations in Motocross of Nations history have been the United States, Great Britain and Belgium, with 17, 16 and 14 victories respectively. Team USA won the 2000 event, held in St. Jean d’Angely, France, but the terrorist attacks of September, 2001, meant that America would not defend its title the next fall. According to most observers, the 2006 Motocross of Nations near Winchester, England, drew the largest live audience to any outdoor motocross event in several decades. The enthusiastic audience was treated to a spirited battle between AMA Team USA and Team Belgium with the USA coming out on top. Riders from around the world will find a lot of changes at Budds Creek Motocross Park. The track has been the site of popular AMA National Motocross Series events since 1989, and promoter Jonathan Beasley will roll out the red carpet for the teams contesting the 61st Motocross of Nations. He recently devoted several days to intense planning at the track with representatives of the FIM, AMA and Youthstream, and work has already begun on an all-new start area and pit lane that will afford unprecedented viewing for fans. Numerous other modifications to the circuit will give the flowing, natural-terrain track a new look and provide fresh challenges for the competitors.
“Fans around the world still talk about the 1987 Motocross of Nations at Unadilla (New York), which was one of the toughest races in the 60-year history of the event,” Beasley commented. “Heavy rains turned a track that is always very rough into a brutal challenge. We will prepare Budds Creek to be a challenging modern layout that respects the sport’s traditions but lets riders demonstrate their full range of skills. ”Back in 1987, the American team of Bob Hannah, Jeff Ward and Ricky Johnson came out on top at muddy Unadilla and kept a winning streak alive that eventually reached 13 straight wins for Team USA. At Budds Creek, Team USA will go after its third straight victory as it tries to build a new victory streak on an ever-evolving international motocross scene that has seen many changes in the past 60 years. Makita Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael in his last year racing on a bike will lead Team USA along with Kawasaki’s James Stewart and Pro Circuit’s Ryan Villopoto against the best the world has to offer. Be sure to be part of American motocross history by attending this prestigious event. All the info you need along with discounted advanced tickets is available on the Budds Creek website at: www. buddscreek.com. Be sure to take your suntan lotion and your camera and of course those American flags to cheer on your favorite team.

Fav. Food: Chicken Fav. Movie: 40 year old virgin Hobbies: Snowboarding, cross country and hunting Goals: Try to become pro, if that doesn’t happen I want to become a doctor. Sponsors: Gap Racing, Motographx, Scott, Kenda, FMF, NRA, and most important Mom and Dad.
Some of you may have noticed this year that our Hotshot columns change in discipline from month to month. This column used to be strictly for Holeshot Hotshots. A Holeshot Hotshot is a racer that consistently gets holeshots and makes them stick. We’ve kind of gotten away from that format because I just had too many kids ending up on their heads, holding it on way to long to try and get in the paper. I’d encouarge a racer to get the holeshot and make it in the paper, then I’ d stand in the first corner and watch mom or dad give me the death eye while they carried little Johnny or Julie off the track. So, we changed and now we have all different kinds of hotshots. But this months Hotshot, Neil Ebert, even though he is being billed as a D6 Hotshot, really is an undercover Holeshot Hotshot. I try to keep up with everything that is happening in the area, but it’s hard. Neils mom contacted me a while back and asked me to keep an eye on her son and I’m glad she did. You see Neil is a 125 C racer this year and he is a young one. He is only 13 years old and just recently moved up from the mini ranks. Don’t let age fool you though, Neil has adapted to the big bike and is doing quite well for himself. Neil started racing at the age of 7 and he doesn’t really remember that first race. He told me he believes it was at the Dutchmen or Sleepy and it was on a KTM 50. He has progressed thru the ranks and finished third at Dutchmen in track points on a 65 and fourth at Sleepy Hollow last year on his 85. In 2007 he moved up and is consistently finishing in the top 10 of his class which is saying something in the 125 C division. Many times there are between 60 and 90 racers on any given day and to top it all off, he has had seven holeshots this year so far. Watch out for this young Holeshot artist from central Pennsylvania. I’m sure he will continue to get better and continue to be in the front of the pack. More so, watchout next month, who knows you just might be the next MRA Hotshot.

MRA SEPTEMBER 2007
AMA National Harescramble Rausch Creek - July 29, 2007 By Jim Bull
Former AMA National Hare Scramble Champion Jason Raines makes it two in a row on his come back tour. Raines, after a one year hiatus coming off a leg injury grabs his second national win in as many tries in 2007. The AMA National Hare Scramble Series returned to Rausch Creek in combination with a PA State Hare Scramble Series round. There were over 200 entries for today’s national in addition to morning youth racing and an afternoon ATV race. National GNCC # 2 Chris Borich from Subury, PA would take the afternoon ATV race covering four laps in just over 1 hour and 34 minutes followed closely by PA native Rob Hertz with Andy Lagzdins from Baltimore, MD rounding out the podium. In morning youth racing there would be separate races for the Pee Wee motorcycles and ATV’s on their own course while the older youth raced on an abbreviated version of the 7.5 mile national course. GNCC racer Cody Mummert from Glenville, PA would take the overall win in just over an hour followed by Nick Davis then Evan Houston. Right before noon Eastern Time the green flag would drop for the main event. The day’s format
eventually finishing seventh with the majority of the three hour trek being commanded by Yamaha’s Barry Hawk then Jason Raines and 17 year old Thad Duvall. With a half lap to go the leaders would stop for fuel with Hawk getting out of the pro pits maybe 10-15 seconds ahead of Raines. In talking with Raines after the event, he said it was Hawks to win. He said the two biggest problems of the day were the dust and the tons of lapped riders they had to contend with. With only a few miles to go on the last lap they encountered those lappers and Raines took advantage of the opportunity and was able to squeak by. At the checkers it was Raines with Hawks front tire locked onto his rear with Duvall almost two minutes back. The days event was a success and very fruitful for Team Yamaha. They filled the podium with their past champions and their up and comers, there was a two stroke bike and two four stroke’s on the deck and I believe the future looks very bright for them both in terms of talent and product. For complete event results you can check out www.eventscoring.com and to view over 800 photos from today’s race, check out: www.mcracingaction.com.

Thorn Devlin races to the 65cc (7-9) class win. allowed for a three hour race for A and B class riders with the C class competitors pulling off after two hours of racing. Many of the top pro’s made the trip to central Pennsylvania for the Rausch Creek event. This area has been home to off road riding and sanctioned competition for decades and many of today’s top racers grew up riding here. The terrain is very rocky and hilly here and with the lack of rain that the east coast has experienced, this year’s event was very dusty making visibility hard at times. The pros were the first flag to drop with KTM’s Justin Williamson grabbing the holeshot and being first into the woods followed closely by Yamaha’s Barry Hawk. At the end of lap one it would be Hawk coming into the barrels first followed by Williamson, Raines then local pro Ryan Rodgers. The leaders would charge hard during the entire race but the front running order would not change a lot. Williamson fell off pace

The Rausch Creek facility is located 45 miles north of Harrisburg at Exit 107 of PA Interstate 81. This growing motor sports facility opened in the spring of 2000 and continues to expand and improve. Rausch Creek offers a premier MX & ATV Park and hosts separate Trail Riding and 4x4 Off Road Parks. They cater to both the experienced rider and to those that are just getting started in the sport. On the property you will find four tracks and over 650 acres of trails for your riding enjoyment. There is a natural terrain track that offers varying degrees of elevation changes that is just a blast to ride on. They also offer a man made course with singles, doubles and step up jumps that allows both the everyday rider and the motocross racer an opportunity to hone their skills no matter how you like to ride. For the youth riders you will find two separate tracks, one for the smaller riders and an intermediate course for the larger mini cycles. New at Rausch Creek this year is their “Dirt Bike 101” intro to motocross courses. Dirt bike riding can be a great family experience and with the right training can offer you years of worry free enjoyment. Rausch Creek has developed this program along with instructors from the world famous Tony D Motocross Schools to help get riders started off on the right foot. Classes are available thru September and October so be sure to give the park a call to reserve your spot. Beyond the tracks, Rausch Creek offers miles of trail riding opportunities on their two levels of harescramble courses, one for intermediate and one for the more advanced rider. They also offer ATV rentals by the hour on site just in case you haven’t made the decision to own your own machine yet. The equipment is top notch and
provided by local dealer, Velocity Cycles. They offer both sport and utility models to cover all aspects of the sport. Other recent improvements at the park include a watering system that now covers over 20 acres of track and the integration of both sawdust and mushroom soil to help improve track conditions. General Manager Rob Feldman offered MRA’s Trevor Bull an opportunity to ride at the park in late July. Trevor is a novice class racer riding locally in the 125 C division. He was able to do 90 % of the jumps on the track and he had a great time spending close to three hours there. Rausch Creek is open in the summer, Tuesday thru Sunday from 11am to 8pm. Winter hours run November 4 thru April 15 and offer Saturday and Sunday riding only from 9am to dusk. You can contact them by phone at (570) 695-3864 or check them out online at: www.rauschcreekracing.com.

Kelsey Green MX School These past few weeks, many racers have been sponsors of my school, Blettner Power Sports, preparing themselves for Loretta’s. I myself have West Shore Suzuki, Rocket Raceway, been more then busy both on and off the track. Spokesavers, Girlyz, Action Motorsports, FMF, On the track I have been working on my speed, MSR, and the WMA. Without the approval and and off, I have been planning to teach my first help from many members of Happy Ramblers, ever women’s motocross school. July 21st was this would have never happened! Also, thanks to an off weekend for all us racers, which for me turned out to be more intense then a race day! Myself, along with my 110% supportive family arrived at Happy Ramblers S a tu r d ay morning to a fully prepped track ready to teach a lot of girls! Eighteen girls were pre registered and eager to hit the track! Much like that feeling on Kelsey instructing a group of girls.
18 girls attended the school that was sponsored in part by Tucker Rocky Distributing and Blettner Power Sports.
each and every girl who attended! An extra special thanks goes to my family (Dad, Mom, and Nate)! Joe Pyro, CJ Baker and Tim Schmelyun, thank you for helping me for the majority of the day! Several times throughout the day, I was questioned if there was going to be any other riding schools for the girls. My only answer was that if I could make everything fall into place for a second school, there will be, and to keep your eyes open for fliers! I’ll see you all at the races, good luck to everyone! Kelsey #48
the line, when the 30 second board turns sideways, that this could turn out a success, or complete disaster. I claim, this morning I was indeed more nervous then race day! At 9:30, several people from the club volunteered graciously to assist me in taking every one of the girls’ lap times. Fallowing a short break, I had the girls broken into small groups. For the next several hours, every participant went through a series of four stations where they did exercises to improve their riding techniques. Around 12:30 it was easily recognized that these girls were getting burnt out. Both, body and motorcycle on just about every girl was in need of refueling! Donations were made by many of my sponsors, which I was fortunate enough to Kelsey talks with the girls receive. Those things were all given away when during the lunch break. lunch was wrapped up. Everyone was getting anxious to head to the track again. 4:00 pm rolled around much sooner than I expected. This meant that it was the end of the day for my 18 attendants, Parts and Accessories and the end of my teachings. I took a breath, knowing that there were no injuries, and that I had seen countless Authorized Leatt Brace Dealer smiling faces throughout the day. I would like to take this HANOVER, PA moment to thank the many

Damien Plotts wins 3 divisions at Round # 9 - Ultimate MX. Round # 9 of 19 of the District 6 Ultimate MX Series found us at the scenic Evansville MX Park in Berwick, PA. The round offered double D6 championship points along with a free pig roast for riders and an ATV raffle that benefited the Children’s Miracle Network. TPC in Bloomsburg,
Alex Hildebrand soars to the win in 250 B. PA provided the Suzuki Eiger 400 that was won by young Rich Donlin from Hazelton, PA. Evansville was only allowed one Ultimate Round in 2007 but Duane and Tracy Fisher have put all their efforts into transforming their track back to the top notch facility that it had been known for in the past. The Fishers acquired Evansville late in the fall of 2006 and they continue to make improvements there. Remember the old saying, “All good things take time”. Well, they are working against time to make it better with each and every race they hold there. They have added new dirt to the old worn out soil and installed a sprinkler system. They are offering incentives and giveaways to come participate at their track. Already this year a pitbike and a quad have been given away and they will be pulling a winner for a brand new Suzuki RMZ 250 at their
September 23rd race. All you need to do is enter a class for a chance to win. They have a full concession stand and a great bleacher section for their supercross track. For 2007 they have added harescramble events and my bet is that things are just going to continue to get better there. The motocross course has natural elevation changes and if you like to use the horsepower between your legs, you’ll love Evansville. If you haven’t already, please check it out. And when you do, please give them the benefit of the doubt, they are trying as hard as any promoter to give you a great racing experience. On to the racing, the School and College boy groups were the first to tear down the grass start at Evansville. Justin Frederick from Spring City, PA would sweep College Boy and go on to win 125 B as well. Zach Klaptosky would take the 4 stroke School Boy win with Joey Peditto winning School Boy 2 Stroke. In the first 125 C moto, Klaptosky would be out in front but a last lap pass by NY rider Chris Mowery would relegate him to second. Klaptosky would come back to win moto 2 for the O/A on the day with Mowery getting the Supermini win. Local pro racer Damien Plotts came to Evansville and claimed three victory’s on the day, 250 A, 25 + and 30 + A. The best racing was going on behind him between Mike Bear and Darren Edsall with Edsall edging out Bear in all three divisions. The 25 + B division also provided some great racing action between Ethan Waybright and James Sanders with Waybright going 2-2 for the O/A. The 50cc action took place up on Evansville’s SX track and once those divisions were completed the kids were allowed to continue to ride for additional practice. MC Motorsports Racing It’s more than just hot dogs! Words & Photos By Scott Lukaitis
Mixed among the race gas and exhaust at your typical race day is a strange smell. It’s the smell of hot dogs and sauerkraut and fried onions. The smell is coming from a hot dog stand set upon a sponsor table in the middle of a professional looking pit area. It is coming from the pits of MC Motorsports Racing. MC Motorsports racing is the brain child of Mark Vail. Mark is a salesman in the food service business and was at one time an honorary tire changer in the Busch series of Nascar. When his son Connor got involved in motocross racing Mark had an idea. Drawing from his experiences in the real world and seeing the professionalism
The team really knows how to put sponsors best foot forward.
rest of the team delivers. The entire team is well versed in who the sponsors are and what they provide. Each sponsor is listed on the banner on the front of the sponsor table and has their flyer and business cards on the table for anyone to take. The sponsors are important to the team and all of the riders are aware of it. They all understand that how they act as individuals is important to the sponsors and the team as a whole. Riders are chosen not by their finishes but on their heart and desire. The victories are not as important as the effort given. Nobody gives up, that’s what’s important. When I asked about how you join the team Mark basically said you really just have to ask, it’s hard for me to say no. Riders fill out an application and Mark meets with the rider and his/her family and sees if MC Motorsports is something they want to be part of. With professionalism that rivals NASCAR Mark is set to take the team to the next level. I have big plans for the race team said Mark. Hopefully one day it will be a rider development program much like minor league baseball with various degrees of support for the different levels of rider maybe even up to the their professional level. In its first year in racing the team has built a formidable roster of riders. The 2007 roster of riders is John Senopole, Beau Woodrick, Arthur Stryker, Austin Ebberup, Stephen Kraus, Damon Benefield, TJ Scelzo, Thomas Madden, Connor Vail, Joseph Obenauer, Jesse and Keith Pierce, and Louie Diforte, Jr.. They have also lined up an impressive list of sponsors helping them out including: Motorcycle Mall, Hecht Trailers, East Coast Wheels, Spy Optics, Bel-Ray Lubricants, Supercuts, Inkling Promotions, Air Graphix, Mad Brothers Racing, Glissen Landscaping, Sabbretts, and Lukaitis Photo. With all of these people behind the team there is no where to go but up and with the vision of Mark Vail running the show the sky’s the limit. Of course Mark could not do it alone. Former crew chief Rick Brztowski has since left the team but more staff has come on board to make for a well rounded organization. Guy Stryker has come onboard as the teams riding coach, John Senepole is the teams mechanic and Linda Stryker handles the teams administrative tasks. For more information visit their website at www. mcmotorsportsracing.com
that he experienced in NASCAR, Mark saw a need in motocross for a professionally organized and run amateur race team. Together with friend Rick Brztowski, MC Motorsports Racing was launched for the 2007 racing season. The concept was a simple one. Take the professionalism that racing has at the highest level and pare it down to the beginning rider. What is essentially an individual sport and making it a team concept with a shared pit area and sponsors is not an easy task but starting at the ground level it is more manageable. The riders gain the experience of competing with and against each other but all shares in the victories and knowledge gained. The first thing that you notice when you happen upon the MC Motorsports pit area is how neat and organized everything is. There are no helmets or gear lying all over the place and the bikes are washed in one area. The main motorhome and trailer (decked out in sponsor logos of course) is fully stocked with everything a rider will need on raceday, from spare parts and tearoffs to the bottles of water and Gatorade in the cooler. And who could forget the hot dogs. Mark’s regular job with Sabretts has afforded his access to the product and setting up a hot dog cart seemed like the right idea. It acts as an icebreaker Mark said of the free dogs that he hands out to those that stop The Team: Left to Right (Standing): by and it allows Owner/Team Manager - Mr. Mark Vail, TJ Scelzo, Stephen Kraus, people to hang Linda Stryker - Assistant, Arthur Stryker, Beau Woodrick, Austin around and ask Ebberup, Mr.Guy Stryker - Team Riding Coach about the team Left to Right (Kneeling): and our Connor Vail, Jesse Pierce, Louie DiForte, Joseph Obenauer, sponsors’s, and Thomas Madden, Keith Pierce when they ask Not Pictured - Dave Duane, John Senopole and Damon Benefield Mark he and the photo by Scott Lukaitis

Post Injury Recovery Every motocross racer knows that we take part in a fast, precise and dangerous sport, which when done correctly can also be a beautifully expressive form of art. Every artist encounters a creative block every now and then. Unfortunately for motocross racers these blocks usually come in the form of injuries. The most common moto injuries usually consist of broken bones, torn/sprained ligaments and concussions. Being able to recover properly from these injuries is so important because they can potentially end your racing career if you do not. You must not only recover physically from the injury but you must mentally prepare yourself to return to the motocross track as well. Broken bones are fairly easy to recover from unless you had a really nasty bone shattering break. Make sure you get a good bone specialist, preferably one who specializes in athletes, to set your break. The doctor you choose is a very important part of your healing process, and it is important to get one you know and trust. You will probably have to wear some sort of cast for at least six week to eight weeks while the bone begins to heal. These first few weeks can be the most important because they will dictate how long your recovery period will be. If you want your bone to heal quicker and stronger be sure to not take the pain medicine that you are prescribed unless you absolutely can’t stand the pain and feel like you may pass out. Prescription pain killers inhibit your immune system and your body’s ability to uptake and utilize nutrients properly. It is no surprise that when the rest of your body is not functioning properly you will not heal properly either. To defeat pain first realize it is nothing more than a signal interpreted by the brain. Once you can control that signal you can concentrate on putting positive thoughts and feelings into your injury to facilitate the healing process. There are many things you can do to make sure your body is getting everything it needs to encourage a quick and consistent healing process. Your diet is one of the most important things to consider during any healing process. To mend bones correctly your body needs plenty of vitamin C, D3, boron, zinc and
calcium. These vitamins and minerals all interact with each other to heal everything from broken bones, joint problems, and torn muscles. Boron and vitamin D3 are both used to enhance the absorption rate of calcium. To get proper amounts of boron you may want to go buy a supplement unless you are a vegetarian, vegetarians get plenty of boron and vitamin D3 through lots of fruits, veggies and nuts. Chances are you probably don’t get near enough of what you need from a conventional meat based diet unless you take supplements. You can get the exact vitamin D your body needs at any time, by simply going outside and getting a sun tan. Light strikes your skin causing a chemical reaction that gives your body all of the vitamin D it needs until you loose that tan. The best types of calcium
can be found in dark green leafy vegetables, kelp, salmon with bones (don’t eat the bones just buy it and cook it with bones) and sardines. I would personally stay away from milk because humans are not designed to drink cows milk, not only can it not be digested but most of the nutrients in it can not be absorbed either. To top off your diet I would recommend using Cell Food®. This is a supplement that contains mostly everything your body needs, except energy, and it is all isolated from good sources. The last part to healing properly is your activity level. Most people believe that sleep and rest is the best way to heal from an injury; however this is only partly true. In the beginning of your healing process you want to rest until you feel capable of moving around without severe pain. Once you get past that stage you want to get out and move around as much as possible because the more blood you get pumping the more healing you will experience. Moving around also helps fight atrophy and sickness from setting in. So remember if you keep a positive outlook your healing process will be positive as well.

2007 Amateur National Champ Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National Championship July 30th to August 4th
Cover Boy Jarek Balkovic
By: Brett Hayes Now begins the dream for every amateur motocross rider in the country, to compete at the National Amateur championships at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Tennessee. Every year riders from throughout the country descend upon Hurricane Mills, Tennessee to hopefully achieve their dream of a national motocross championship. This year riders for the District 6 area definitely showed they can with the best the country has to offer. While some had great weeks others had an

This being my first ever trip to the Loretta Lynn’s ranch, I was not sure what to expect but I can tell you it far exceeded anything I could have imagined. If you ever have the opportunity to attend this event, you need to go take it in for yourself. This is how things ran down over the week of racing. In the Motocross Lites A and Pro-Sport classes the racing action was great all week as every moto turned into the Canard, Stroupe and Izzi battle that everyone ex-

While those three were flying around out front, Phil Nicoletti charged all week with a hurt collarbone and all to gut out two awesome overalls. Phil ended up finishing second overall in the Motocross Pro-Sport class and third overall in MX Lites Pro-Sport thanks to a DNF by Stroupe in the final moto. My shout out of the week has to go to Willy Toth in the MX Lites Pro-Sport class; bad
Adam Blessing 4th - Four Stroke luck struck him all week long. In moto one he was running tenth when he had to pull over due to illness. In moto two while running sixth he got a flat front tire, and in moto three he kept it together until the end finishing in eighth. However Willy did end up finishing twelfth overall in the Motocross ProSport class. Willy was not the only Pennsylvania rider to have his fair share of bad luck. In the Motocross Lites modified class, Lowell Spangler fresh off two championships at Ponca City
was battling through the pack and ended up crashing hard in the six-pack after the finish. With more bad luck in this class Lowell shifted his attention to the stock class

Lettieri and Toth rode strong all week and consistently good starts paid off for Lettieri finishing seventh on the four-stroke and ninth on the two-stroke. Congrats Jarek on a job well done! Well 2007 brought us a great week of racing and fun, hopefully 2008 will bring more of the same. I would like to send a special thanks to Jim Bull for all his help, and especially the Toth family for letting me stay with them making the week just that much more enjoyable! Congratulations to everyone that made it to Loretta’s this year, hopefully I’ll see you there again next year.

Carmichael Caps Final Season with 150th Career Win August 12, 2007 AMA/NPG news release Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael, of Tallahassee, Fla., capped off an illustrious 11-year career with a record 150th career win at the Honda Spring Creek Pro National Presented by Unbound Energy and Scott USA, Round 9 of AMA Toyota Motocross Championship Presented by FMF. Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., picked up his third win of the season in AMA Motocross Lites at Spring Creek Motocross Park. Carmichael, who retired today from two-wheel racing to focus solely on his four-wheel career, was completely dominant in his final ride, sweeping both motos en route to the overall victory to keep a perfect six-for-six record in races he has entered on the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship. He also ends his career with a record 15 AMA National Championships. To put Carmichael’s career win record into perspective, the next rider on the career win list is Jeremy McGrath, of Encinitas, Calif., who had 89 victories. “This is a sport that has made me and provided me a great life and lifestyle,” said Carmichael. “I’ve surrounded myself with great sponsors and people that look out for me. It’s funny to think that 1996 was my first national and it’s weird to think that this ride is over. Its time to move on and I’m happy with every decision I’ve made.” photo by Justin Durner

Timonium Short Track
Timonium Fairgrounds - August 10, 2007 By Jim Bull
Chris Klinefelter wraps up the 07 summer series with the Sportsman class win.
Jesse Long takes the win over Jake Shoemaker in the 250 B division.
The Baltimore County Trail Riders and Cockeysville Optimist Club put the wraps on their 13th annual summer short track series on Friday night August 10th at the Timonium Fairgrounds. Round # 6 brought the largest rider turnout of the series at 197 entries with the 4’ trophies being sponsored by Mike Bell Racing. The Sportsman class once again kicked off the night with a red flag on lap two. After the restart Chris Klinefelter cruised to the main event win. Appropriately Klinefelter won the opening Sportsman heat at round one to open this year’s series. Matter of fact three of the first five classes started off with the red flag coming out requiring restarts. It was starting to look like it was going to be a long night but everything settled down from there. In 250 B racing action Jesse Long and Jake Shoemaker put on a great show battling the entire race. Shoemaker has been dominate
as of late but Long got the job done on this night. The Adult 100 races brought much excitement at the closing round as well with lots of bumping and grinding going on, Cory Hormes would come out on top in the end. Probably the most dominate racer at this years series was Bromley Motorcycles Danny Bromley. Bromley has been racing motorcycles for close to six years now. His dad told me before the race that he came home one day when Danny was about 2 1/2 years old and found him with a hammer and other assorted tools trying to remove his training wheels from his bicycle. Joe said “I took them

Danny raced three classes at this years series, 85cc (12-15), Youth 100 and 125cc, he won every race he entered but two. Other dominate riders in this years series include Jake Shoemaker and Brandon Robinson, Dale Verzi and Erin Kissinger and brothers Chase and Colton Smith. One of the most neglected yet most important parts on our bikes or quads are cables. Many riders take for granted that cables will last forever and never n e e d maintenance. If you have luck like me, that neglected cable will break o n Sunday just when you’re ready to ride or race. A well maintained cable also keeps your controls working like new. Here are some quick tips to avoid any problems: • Lube your cables. It’s easy to do. Everyone should have one of these in his toolbox. It’s a basic “cable luber”. A simple little tool that doesn’t cost much, is easy to use, and works great. They’re available from several manufacturers, most dealers stock them. There’s no need to remove your cables, just expose the cable ends. The luber attaches to one end and forces a lubricant through the cable. You can use a lubricant specifically made for cables, WD-40, or any similar lubricant. Be generous as you’re forcing the lubricant into your cable, it will also flush any fine dirt through to allow your cables to work freely. • Few of us carry extra cables. For the trail rider or woods racer, you can zip tie a spare cable along side your existing cable. It’s an easy way to carry a spare cable and also make for a quick change if needed. You won’t waste any time routing the cable, just undo both ends and you’re ready to go. • When I buy spare cables, I’ll buy a high quality cable such as Motion Pro’s T2. These cable housings are longitudinally-wound to resist compression under heavy loads to deliver a precise, positive, non-mushy feel. They also have a PE liner for smoother operation and longer life. You can then keep your stock cable for a spare. • One of the most neglected cables on today’s four strokes is the hot start cable. Because of its function and short movement, it’s critical to keep it working properly. You should remove the plunger mechanism from your carburetor to keep it clean and working freely. A stuck hot start will cause a lean condition which can lead to larger problems. Check the play on this cable as you turn the handlebars all the way right and left. Improper routing may force your hot start open.

Tomahawk MX
August 11-12, 2007 By Jim Bull
Round # 7 of 11 of the MDRA Race Series was held under beautiful blue skies at the Tomahawk MX facility in Hedgesville, WV in early August. Even though this round was the smallest of the
Tommy Mudgett races to the year with just over 450 riders attending, the racing action was as intense as any other round to date. Riders found a new and improved race course at Tomahawk for this round. The track direction was changed and many obstacles were either removed or reworked allowing for a safer but faster ride. Lap times were reduced by about 10 seconds to allow for a quicker race day and Martinsburg Motorsports was your event sponsor. Vet C led off the day followed by a split gate with the 125 A and B groups. Wow, those expert guys better watch out when some of these amateur racers move up. The racing was hot with Russ Boswell getting out to the early lead and eventually grabbing the moto 1 win. A second moto DNF would keep him out of the mix allowing Andrew Benson to take the overall with 2-2 moto finishes. C. J Baker was looking fast with Billy Gallagher and Jeff Corron rounding out the top five. In Four Stroke action the Toth brothers from West Shore Suzuki would go at it. It’s not often
we see these two in the same class so today was a special treat. Willy got out to the early lead but slowed down to let younger brother Levi go by. This would cost Willy as Levi applied the pressure and went on to the moto win. Sources have it that this didn’t set well with Levi and he came out charging in moto two, it was a photo finish but the moto and the O/A went to Levi.. Willy would have a great day winning both premier expert races but again what could this mean when the younger Levi advances to the A divisions. Supermini provided a three way battle that left newcomer to the College Boy win. series, Daniel Lippman going home winner for the day. Steven Good and Steven Sparks would finish second and third respectively after a great battle on the track. Other mini division winners included the likes of Stan Bolen (racing with a badly injured finger), Dillon Thomas and Kyle King. Check the results here to see how you favorite racer faired. Other changes at this round included the announcement of Sleepy Hollow to be moved to the north series for 2008 and the addition of Budds Creek to the south series. Tomahawk is open for practice 7 days a week and their next event is a District 7 Harescramble on September 9th with a Quad MX race. They also have a motocross race on September 16th and a Pig Roast in early October so be sure to get those in your calendar. You can get all the details on their website at: www.tomahawkmx.com and be sure to check out today’s race photos at: www. mcracingaction.com.

In the morning Pee Wee race Craig DeLong would get off to the early lead and hold it for a few laps. On lap three of four, KTM factory rider Henry Ferreira would get by DeLong and race on for the overall win. The youth classes were up next and we found Henry’s older brother Jacobus out in front of the pack. Jacobus would race to the overall win with Thomas Shughart winning the 150cc Four Stroke division and Bonnie Beaver taking the Women’s crown. The main event found many of the areas fastest racers on the front row. Ryan Rodgers and Jerod Stoner got out front first with Wally Palmer right on their rear fenders. On lap two both Rodgers and Stoner would go down allowing Palmer to pass. Just a short time later Palmer pulled into

Honda rider Billy King moved into second and would finish there followed by KTM rider Jason Sipe. The “Dash for Cash” was broken down into three categories. One for novice, one for amateur and one for expert racers with over $1000.00 going to the winner of the expert race. Saturday August 11th, the Blue Comet Motorcycle Club in Skippack, PA held their second annual Harescramble race. Blue Comet is one of the oldest motorcycle clubs in the country and they held scrambles races on their grounds I believe thru the 1960’s and 70’s. Blue Comet is good at promoting events and last year they decided they wanted to get back into the off road segment of the sport. They borrowed some land from the township and put together a race that would benefit their town and local fire company. The
event was a hit so they did a repeat in 2007. Many sponsors lined up again this year and the event went off without a hitch. There were vendors and activities for the crowd and food was available. They held four classes of races, one for pee wee bikes, one for youth and a main event motorcycle only event for novice, amateur and expert racers. To cap off the day they held a “Dash for Cash” that paid back over $2000.00 to the racers and all was donated by businesses and individuals.
Ryan Rodgers (356) gets the main event win.

Racer’s Edge Setting Your Sag By Al Carr
I know I’ve covered this subject before but I am constantly asked about how to set race sag so I thought it best to touch on it again. Having the correct spring rate on your bike is important to good suspension action as well as overall handling. The easiest way to find out if your stock springs will suit you is to go to racetech.com and click on their spring rate search. By simply typing in your weight, your bike and a couple of other pieces of information it will calculate for you the correct springs for fork and shock. Sometimes the rate it will recommend may be unavailable. For example it may suggest a 4.7 rear spring and all that’s available is either a 4.6 or a 4.8. In this instance you have to decide whether you prefer your suspension a little stiff (4.8) or a little soft (4.6) and I do mean a little. Fork spring rates can pretty much be covered nearly exactly since you have
the option of mixing springs. The front forks use two springs, one in each leg. From factory they are identical, lets say a .44 If the calculator says you need a .45 and none is listed then get a set of .46 springs and install one in one leg and leave the stock .44 in the other, your overall spring rate is now .45 I’ll bet a bunch of heads exploded with that piece of wisdom, I can hear it now ... “my suspension will be uneven with one side softer than the other” Absolutely not!!! Do not think of your forks as two separate units, they are not, when installed on the bike they are one unit and the spring rate is a result of the additive value of the two springs. To physically set your race sag you must first put the bike on a stand so the rear wheel is off the ground. Now pick a spot on the rear fender

weight with no one on board. If you have the correct spring on the bike then this number should be between 20 - 25 mm. More than 25mm and the spring is too heavy, less than 20 and the spring is too light.
If the number is greater then you need to add more preload to the spring by turning the spring collar until you can measure 100mm. When you get the 100, check the static sag. This is the amount the bike sags under its own

Hey Everyone, Well I just got home from my long trip out west. I was pretty excited to go out there this year, but I knew it would be a tough trip. I was going out to race with the best of the best again and this time I was doing it coming off a three month long injury. Even though I haven’t been able to train or ride since before I got hurt in May we made the long trip out west to Castle Rock, Washington. Kevin Varnes and his parents Jimmy and Dolly along with his son Ryan made the trip out there with us. We hit a couple races on the way out in South Dakota. I didn’t have very good luck at the first race as I crashed passing the leader on the TT and I got a horrible holeshot and could only make it up to 4th on the Short Track. Then we made the trip out to Sturgis, South Dakota. The competition out there this year was awesome. Kenny Coolbeth, Jared Mees, Aaron and Rich King, Bugs Pearson, Davey Durelle, and many others were racing. There were about 40 riders. In the 450 Expert final, I got a great start and drag raced Durelle into the first corner. I got bumped high which allowed Mees to pass. We rode three wide on the fast and smooth track for about 6 or 7 laps and Coolbeth worked his way around us. Then I made another mistake trying to follow him around the top and slipped up allowing Aaron King to pass me on the bottom. We all finished within 10 feet of each other and it was a great race and a good confidence builder. The next day at Sturgis it rained and the track turned into a rough and slick holeshot contest. I was unable to get off the line and missed the final by one spot. After that we headed to Mount Rushmore. What a pretty cool place to go to. Then we headed to Washington and stopped at Mt Rainer on the way, which is the biggest mountain in the 48 main states. The National TT at Castle Rock looked like a lot of fun. I was kinda bummed there wasn’t any tight corners and no jump again this year but I was determined to do good. I struggled in qualifying with my bike. I couldn’t get it hooked up the way I wanted to and I was spending a ton of time shifting it. We qualified a very disappointing 30th. I made some changes and came from the back row in my heat race to finish 5th. Front row on the semi, I got off the line in 3rd and followed national number local guys Joe Kopp and Dan Stanley. I stalked Stanley for the whole eight laps, right off his rear looking for a mistake that never came. I missed
my 3rd national by a tenth of a second and my first national in five months. Sammy Halbert came from the 2nd row to win his first national followed by J.R. Schnabel and his brother Jethro Halbert. The next day I was feeling good for the short track. I qualified descent in the 19th spot, but I wanted to do a little better. I lined up in my heat race with Wiles, Kopp, Bigelow, Janisch, Murray, Rush and a couple other fast guys. I got a good initial jump but I wheelied for some odd reason and got pushed high and came off turn two in like 11th place. I put my head down and passed a couple guys and finished a disappointing 8th. It put me on the back row in my semi. In the semi I got off the line in 3rd place. I came out of turn two, and the guys in front of me must of scene a big stop sign on the back straightaway and almost came to a complete stop. I checked up and almost crashed and they got going again and I got passed by like four guys. I couldn’t get back around them as the track got really hard to pass on and finished a 6th in my semi. For being out for so long and not being able to ride or train in forever, I still felt pretty strong and I was so happy to get home and get back on my training schedule. I want it really bad and I’m willing to work as hard as I can to get it. The singles points in the AMA are now tied between Kenny Coolbeth and Jake Johnson who struggled all weekend in Castle Rock. Jared Mees sits in 3rd. The overall points championship has Coolbeth winning, then Mees in 2nd and Jake Johnson in 3rd. Our next race is a basic twins race, I96 in Michigan and then my next shot at my first national in Springfield, Illinois at the short track on September 1st. Til then, see ya at the track!

Inside Sponsorship
Every year, thousands of racers, from novice to pro, in every type of motorcycle racing, apply for the privilege of obtaining support from various companies. In exchange for carrying their name, they will typically provide motorcycle parts, accessories, gear or services at a substantial discount to the rider. If you are interested in finding out about how you can benefit, first you may find it helpful to understand how sponsorship programs work from the sponsors point. An important factor for the company is how the programs are managed and organized in order to be successful for both rider and sponsor. Here are some questions I posed to Chris Honnold, Director of Rider Support for O’Neal USA, in order to give you some insight into exactly how these sponsorship programs work. The first thing to do is get yourself familiar with the company you are interested in reaching out to and be sure to know what kind of products they offer. Q. How long has O’Neal been in business? A. O’Neal was founded by Jim O’Neal in 1970. Q. What products does O’Neal offer? A. O’Neal offers a variety of products including riding and casual apparel for men, women and kids. Some other items include helmets, tie downs, boots, body armor, goggles, and we even carry miscellaneous parts like handlebars. Q. How long has O’Neal had a sponsorship program? A. Jim was helping riders as far back as the 70’s with bike parts and riding gear. Q. How long have you been running the sponsorship program for O’Neal? A. I have been running the program for 4 years. Q. What are some of your responsibilities as Director of Rider Support? A. I attend all Professional SX/MX Events and National Amateur events as a representative for O’Neal. I also help in assisting the art/product department with the rider feed back I receive on our products. Q. What levels of sponsorship does O’Neal offer and what are the differences? A. We offer Novice, Intermediate, Expert and Pro rides depending on a rider’s current level and experience. Q. How many riders are you able to sponsor per year? A. The number of contracts for each level varies each year. Currently, we support about two thousand riders in total. Q. Do you have a limit to how many riders that you sponsor for each level? A. We have a certain cut off for each level but the limit is flexible depending on how many applications we receive for each level. For instance if one year we receive more applications for amateur racers than novice racers, we may decide to adjust our limits by upgrading some of the available novice contracts to amateur contracts. Q. What would be some of the reasons that applications are rejected? A. The biggest reason would be that there was not enough information on their resume. Riders should have raced for at least a year prior to applying. Q. What is the range of geographic locations of sponsored riders and is there one area that usually has higher representation of sponsored riders? A. We support riders all over the world. We even have distributors in several countries in Europe and as well as distributors in Australia. Of course our representation in Southern California is huge for us because of our location here. However, my amateur program is a very important part of my job because of the volume of represented riders. These riders range geographically from Maine to Florida and back to California. Q. What are some of the benefits offered in your sponsorship program that riders would be
interested in? A. There is definitely much more to our program than discounts. We offer a wide range of products, and we just opened a website that is dedicated to our riders. The site allows the rider to view our products, check out inventory on items, order directly from the site, view order history and even track orders 24/7. Additionally, riders should know that we design our own products and test them at the track and obtain rider feedback to insure the highest quality and best functionality of our products. Q. Do you review every application for sponsorship yourself or do you have help? A. I review every application myself. I like to try to know all of my riders. Q. What does O’Neal look for in prospective riders seeking support? A. We look for a nice resume with consistent race results, pictures and the rider profile or background. Q. If riders have additional sponsors, are there certain sponsors or sponsorship types that would conflict with your support program? A. We usually can work with a rider of they have a boot or helmet sponsor, a lot of riders these days are sponsored by numerous companies. It is the nature of the sport. Q. What is a contracted rider’s responsibility to O’Neal? A. Mostly we just expect our riders to represent the company on and off the track in a positive mature manner. Q. Have you ever terminated a contract with a rider prior to its scheduled completion? A. We have, but it was by the riders request for release in order for them ride for another team or country. Q. Does a sponsored rider have a better opportunity to renew their contract for the next year or do you review all riders as new applicants each year? A. If they continue to race and keep up their end of the sponsorship we renew without a problem. Q. By when would you recommend that an applicant submit their resume to O’Neal? A. I stood at the finish line watching racer after racer wait for their buddy to congratulate them. Passion, respect, sportsmanship, and talent are four main ingredients to make a successful racer. On August 12, 2007 the shotgun hare scramble held by the High Mountain Dirt Riders was a great success. It was held in the fields and mountain of Numedia, Pa and it was a beautiful day. The club members worked diligently throughout the entire weekend to keep the event rolling smoothly. This

race was previously started by the sound of a shotgun, therefore receiving its name. However many other traits make this event unique. Camping is always relaxing, breakfast and lunch is delicious, and racing is just a bonus. Camping with your buddies and watching an outdoor movie is a great way to make friends, before racing the next day. The peewee race began at 9:00 am and lasted for forty-five minutes. Forty-Five short minutes feels like an eternity, when you are at the edge of your seat the entire time. After an unstoppable battle in the 7-9 65cc class Thorn Slappy Devlin took the checkered flag. Followed by . . . Salvatore Cusimano in the 4-8 50cc, Nicholas Mccllough in the 10-12 EL, John IV C Lawton in the 4-9 EL, and last but not least Chris Adams in the 4-8 O.I. The youth race began at 10:30 and lasted for an hour. The AA class was jam packed with enthusiasm and competition as these riders raced to the finish. A nail biting battle to the very end delivered Nick Iceman Davis as the winner! Right behind was, Samuel Swavely in the 12-15 100cc, Jesse Groemm in the 14-15 85cc, Joel Chapman in the 12-13 85cc, Robert Civiletti Jr. in the 10-11 85 cc, Phillip Morsehead in the 13-15 150cc, Craig Delong in the10-11 65cc, Thomas Shughart in the 10-12 125cc, and riding as hard as ever Tabatha Roser in the EL Womens class. As the riders could be found displaying their talents while challenging the diverse terrain, parents flooded the barrels waiting for their riders. It was definitely a great hare scramble with rocks, rocks, rocks, grass track, and tight trails. HMDR did an excellent job marking the
