15th Annual Kevin McNicholas Memorial Maryland State Fairgrounds - July 24, 2009 By Len & Ben Breech Dave Smith. He held the lead until the third lap when he bobbled on the front straight, letting Jenkins past. Crabbe’s son, Anthony, almost pulled off his first win in the Open B final, leading Jason Cunningham, Steve Lerch and Jeff McManus. Lerch took second entering three on the second lap, with McManus following. With Crabbe holding an unwavering tight inside line, Lerch used the outside line to gradually work his way into the lead into one on the sixth lap. Once in front, he did put some distance on Crabbe by the end. Ace Phillips edged Rich Mellinger for the 30 + win, with Joey Alexander topping the 250 B. Scott Barnes played with the 150 Adult class. Devin Owens inherited the 65 win when runaway leader Brandon Price bailed off the second turn two laps from the end. Nathan Reichert won the 50 (7-8) final with Jacob Gast leading the 50 Chain group. 50 Shaft went to Hunter Conrad over Kaiden Rhodes.

Open A and Open Sportsman winner (29A) Donnie Mullen

As he has done a few times in previous years, Colton Smith opened up the Baltimore County Trail Riders/Cockeysville Optimist Club-sponsored short track at the Pony Ring on the grounds of the Timonium Fairgrounds with a trio of wins in the 125, 150 Youth and 85 (12-15) classes. Now in its 15th year, the event is named for a club member who died from Cystic Fibrosis, with a large amount of the proceeds being donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The event dodged a weather bullet when a nasty thunderstorm dumped a huge amount of rain less than two miles north of the fairgrounds right before practice. Smith started off grabbing the 125 lead from Albert Cook, Matthew Eichelberger, Samantha Bergman and Cody Ebersol. Bergman took third into three on the fourth lap, while Ebersol also displaced Eichelberger. The 85 (12-15) was easy over Ryan Dragunas and Ebersol. The Youth 150 saw the only time he was behind all night when Cody Bauer led Smith, Jeff Standiford and Cameron Smith, but Colton was in front by the end of the opening lap. Cameron had earlier taken the 85 (7-11) over a small but talented field. All riders had won the class at least once this year, so the start was important. He led Dustin Healey, Brandon Price and Dylan Almony and kept in front. Healey and Price battled for second most of the way, with Healey getting the spot. Donnie Mullen was on the Miller Motorsports Honda and took a pair of almost identical wins in the Open A and Open Sportsman finals. He led Dalton Winkler, Chris Klinefelter and Nick Henderson out of two. Klinefelter

took second off two on the second lap, with Henderson doing so the following lap. The only difference was Winkler fell - twice - in the Open A and stayed upright for fourth place in the Sportsman. The Vintage class had Joey Parks and Chris Klinefelter leaving Matt Langrehr, Mike Keane and Nick Taylor behind as they broadslided their Triumphs in the turns. Parks managed to hold the lead with Klinefelter beside him on the outside. Off the final turn, Klinefelter grabbed a handful and just edged by for the win. Former National Number holder Rob Crabbe took his second start this year after not riding for 15 years and led the 40+. He was trailed by class kingpin Ray Jenkins, Don Mullen Sr. and

It was a wet one at the 8th Round of the PA State Hare Scramble Series at Rausch Creek. This event was also a Bike AMA National so the Pros, like Barry Hawk and Jarod Stoner, were on the front of the line.

The day started off with the Pee Wee riders braving the elements. Because of all the rain the track received the night before, there were huge puddles all over it. These little riders had to race through puddles that came up to their knees! The first time around everyone seemed nervous about having to ride through them,

but with encouraging words and cheers from the spectators they made it through. In the 65cc 7-9 class, Kyle Tino and Trenton Poust had quite the battle going on, with Poust only finishing 1 second behind Kyle Tino. It was a good day for Kyle Tino because he was also the overall winner for the Pee Wee classes. In the youth bike classes, the 85cc 1215 class had a good battle between Logan

youth quad classes, Kyle Slane did a nice job, winning the overall with 13 laps. Anderson and Eric Bowman, with Anderson finishing in first only 2 seconds ahead of Bowman. Another awesome race was in the SM 12-15 class. Tegan Temple only finished 1 second ahead of Ethan Jaudas, but both guys had Chase Rusden on their tail, finishing only 8 seconds behind them. These three guys were also the leaders of the overall for the youth classes. Most youth racers only got to do one lap due to the track being long and tough, but these quicker guys got to go around a second time and really did a nice job. In the

The story of the race for the adult bikes was the big hill. Every single person at the race was talking about that hill. All the racers had a very difficult time getting up it, even the pro riders. I overheard one racer say that it was not about how well you raced, just if you could make it up that hill. Before the quads started, they made the decision to take it out of the race. Another amazing story was that Nick Davis, 86-200 B class, was the winner of the overall. He was able to beat out pros Barry Hawk and Jarod

Stoner by over a minute to get the top spot, so a big congratulations to him, especially with this being only his first year in the adult class. In the adult quad classes, Chris Borich, once District 6 rider then went pro, had one heck of a lead over everyone. He was the winner of the overall by over 13 minutes. The main change comes in a redirection of the course with new faces on the jumps and different lines to allow for a smoother flow. In talking to many of the riders, they all seemed to agree that the changes were good. As mentioned, the start is in the same location, but rather than the huge off camber as in the past, riders now do a bit of a chicane type action and head into the course in the opposite direction. The start was built up to allow this, and the angle seems to allow for much smoother firstturn action. Many felt that the jumps are now safer and that the track now flows better. Many of the area’s fastest racers were out on this day in preparation for the upcoming Amateur Nationals at Loretta Lynn’s. Round 8 of 12 of the MDRA Series was held on a newly designed course at the Doublin Gap MX Park near Shippensburg, PA. A few short years ago, Doublin led the charge when they did a complete re-design of their facility. Since then, many of the tracks around the region have followed suit with either new rebuilds or re-designs. The previous course at Doublin provided for great spectating, and the new course was a welcome change, but some felt it didn’t flow as well as it could. So this year, mid-season, the folks at Doublin once again stepped up and gave the riders what they asked for. The start remains the same, as considerable investment was made there in the first build.

MDRA Series - Jul

The MDRA made its ninth round in the series with a landing at Tomahawk MX. Saturday evening poured down the rain, leaving little hope for racing on Sunday. Chad Gouchenour utilized every effort to control track conditions by pushing off half of the track, but it was still a losing battle without the wind and sun. Practice was almost impossible, especially when the little bikes hit the track. But, luckily for everyone, the sun and exhaustive grooming helped shape up the track. The first set of motos saw yellow flags left and right as the track suffered from a case of underwater-itis. The first gate to drop was for the combined classes of 250 A/250 B. Schmelyun took the holeshot and continued the steady lead while #360 Cook and #23 Garret Toth followed suit. Toth opted for his 125 2-stroke instead of the 4-stroke machine. For the senior classes #31 Barry Carsten, who Jamie Jordan said “must be 102,” showed no matter what the age that he is still the man to beat with plenty of experience under his chest protector. Open A was a huge upset first moto, as Toth won and Cook and Schmelyun were back in the pack. The schoolboy 4-stroke class was fast, as #7X Dakota Yohe off of a staggered start was able to catch up to collegeboy. The first gate dropped once again for the second set, and #204 Eric Myers broke second around the first turn and made an intense charge on Schmelyun until a bad crash off of the twin tabletops put a stop to his impressive ride. #31 Toth seemed to be on a roll when he wrecked, losing a couple positions, which allowed his older brother Willy to finish over him for third with a 5-2. Following behind the A class was the 250 B class, which was just as exciting to watch as #192 Presgraves, #225 Yingling and #303 Good traded places multiple times, battling for first, second, and third. But it was

Steven Good who was able to twist the throttle to an overall win, as well as for Open B. Gauge Keith #22 on a Cobra won the overall with perfect 1-1 positioning in both 50 4-6 and 50 oil 4-6, while #316 Chase Yentzer pulled out two third places in both classes.

In the 65 class, 7-11 Ty Kesten, KTM pilot from PA, won in a class with over 17 riders. 85 9-11 looked as though there would be a battle between #108 Brandon Garlock and #4 Makiyah Gorman; however, Garlock finished 7th in the second set. #14 Ryan Clites held off #97 Kevin Stoner and #141 Tristan Kimble in 85 12-15 with an overall 1-1 finish. Moving on to the supermini classes, the 12-16 was taken by local #887 Tommy Coluzzi. #341 Brandon Albright went first in Open C and second in 250 C right behind overall winner #28 Tyler Ray. Later in the day the 35 + B class showed great racing and scattered results with the top three finishers going to #150 Naugle (2-1), #229 Clint Early (1-5), and #231 Jim Dobbs (62). #86 Taylor Stevey showed not only the boys how to do it but also the women with the win for the class and another 15

points further in the series. Even with the inclement weather, the racing was fast and interesting all afternoon and kept the spectators clinging to the fences for some action. Look for the MDRA racing to resume after Loretta Lynn’s with a pit stop at Pleasure Valley. After a four-month break from racing, Blue Diamond MX Park in New Castle, Del., was back to drop the gate for a fun day of racing and host to a Loretta Lynn WarmUp race. Some of the region’s top racers got

some extra track time and longer motos to get ready for the AMA/Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championships at Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. The weather, despite having a threat of storms throughout the day, was partly cloudy and very warm, which was perfect for those top riders to train for the intense heat and humidity at Loretta Lynn’s. Some riders even wore sweatshirts on this 80 to 90 degree day during their motos to get more associated with what they have to face a week later. The 6-8 lap motos that Blue Diamond put on early in the day also tested the riders’ strength and stamina all day. One rider who was unstoppable but is also

bound to go to Loretta Lynn’s was 85cc (9-11) and Junior Mini rider Coty Schock. Schock, who hails from Dover, Del., was uncontested the entire day, and despite his small stature, he made it look really easy and very fun over all the obstacles at Blue Diamond. Coty is making his first trip to Tennessee in the 85cc (9-11) Stock class and is looking forward to a fun-filled week and ride with the best amateur racers in the country. Another 85cc (9-11) and Junior Mini rider to keep an eye out for is New Jersey native Joey Galbraith. Joey could not match the home track pace of Coty Schock but rode with 4 straight second-place finishes in the 85cc (9-11) and Junior Mini classes. Joey took out his KTM 65 also and took the overall win in the 65cc (10-11) class with a straight 1-1 sweep. As of July 27th, Joey sits on top of the alternate list for the 65cc (7-11) Modified class for Loretta’s. The 65cc (7-9) class saw Joppa, Md.’s, Shane Desell take the overall win with a dominating 1-1 sweep. Shane also showed up in the Junior Mini class with his KTM65 and mixed it up with the bigger 85cc machines for a 8-3 finish for 5th overall. Shane is another rider heading to the big dance at Loretta Lynn’s, as he will be on the gate rocking the number 67 in 65cc (7-9) Stock class. The A classes drew a small crowd, but their speed made up the difference for the spectators at Blue Diamond. Tyler Wozney took care of home track advantage to win his first A class overall in the 450 A class with a 1-1 sweep. Tyler is fresh into the A class after turning A just a month earlier and already has started turning heads. But his win

didn’t come too easy, as one of Maryland’s top privateers, Chad Wages, gave him a run early in each of the motos. Wages could not match Wozney’s pace since he had been off the bike for two months and has been doing motocross schools recently that have kept him busy. Wages took third overall in Open A with a 2-4 finish. However, Wages made the best of it in 250 A, as he took the overall win after Wozney did not show up at the gate for moto two after winning the first moto. Mark Alfano is another rider fresh into the A class. He went 4-2 for third overall in 250 A and 3-2 for second overall in Open A. Top MAMA A rider TJ Irvin also made an appearance in the A class motos, but his day was quickly over after having a pair of asthma attacks during each of his 250 A and Open A first motos. Irvin showed great speed and had some awesome battles with Alfano, but the heat and humidity got the best of him today at Blue Diamond.

Wilmington, Delaware’s Sean Kelly was another rider taking control of home track advantage. He earned himself a pair of moto wins and, eventually, the overall win in the 250 B class on his Kawasaki KX250 two stroke. Sean would end up being the odd double class rider of the day as well since he also raced the Super mini class. Suzuki-mounted Mike Pettit kept him honest, but Sean would end up with the 1-1 sweep over Pettit’s 2-2 finish for the overall win. Sean is Loretta Lynn bound for the second year in a row in the Super Mini 2 (14-16) class. Kawasaki rider Austin Simpson would finished out third overall in the Super Mini class with a 3-4 finish. Also in the 250 B class, Jason Astudillo finished well enough for second overall with a 2-2, and James Magee would go 3-4 for third overall. Open B saw New Jersey rider Mike Sowa take the 1-1 sweep over another New Jersey rider, Mike Mackeprang (2-2). Mackeprang had a lead going in moto 1 after Sowa had a fall in the first moto that left him way back in the field. But Sowa got the hard charger award for his steady and consistent charge up to the front. Sowa took advantage of the longer motos and passed Mackeprang on the last lap to take the moto win. The 50cc (7-8) saw young Kyle Savvas cruise to a 1-1 sweep at Blue Diamond. After a rough start to the year, Kyle was all smiles today after his overall win. In the 50cc (4-6) class, Dominic Amilcare and Deegan Harper did some battling but the speedy Cobra machine of Amilcare took hom the overall win with Harper finishing a strong 2nd.The C classes saw the best battles of the day as each moto saw at least three or four riders battling for the lead. In the 250 C class, Baltimore, Maryland’s Storm Sheckells went 1-2 for the overall win, and not far behind was the 4-1 finish of Bradley Willams for second

This past weekend, Tomahawk MX played host to the MAMA family for the first time ever. But Mother Nature showed up and attempted to ruin the Sunday portion of the racing. Regardless, the track crew and MAMA stuck it out and made the best of it. The Saturday program was run in the hot sun and clicked off without problems. Chelsea Newbold destroyed the women’s class with a very dominating performance. I’m not sure if she has raced at TMX before, but she sure knows how to make her way around TMX. TJ Irvin took a big win in the College Boy class with 2-1 moto finishes. In moto 2, Scott Clark provided the pressure for the entire distance and was hot on TJ’s back tire at the checkered flag. Scott actually raced in 5 divisions this weekend. How’s that for making the most of your trip? Sunday didn’t quite turn out the same. A heavy pre-dawn rainstorm really soaked the track. Despite the efforts of the track crew, not much could be done but bulldoze the mess aside. The track actually didn’t look bad to start the day, but it got worse before it got better. Fortunately, the sun came out, but the damage was already done. Plenty of people stayed and got their fill of racing. As always, 250C brings the biggest field, and today was no exception. Two divisions took the gate, with William Knott going 1-1 for the overall in D1, and Justin Replogle beating the D2 group for the overall with 1-1 finishes. William actually overcame a huge crash in moto 1 of Open C, and that was his only nonfirst-place finish. Cody Heath scored very valuable points to maintain his points lead in both 250C and Open C. Outsider Joey Deneen showed up to race Supermini and claimed the overall. Charles Wernig outran

Deneen in moto 2, but Deneen had the better first moto finish, giving him the top spot. The mud was the big winner on the day. Many riders in all classes struggled with deep puddles, huge ruts and slick up-hills, which made for some very interesting racing. President’s Corner

D7 President’s Corner National Champions have been crowned, and Loretta Lynn’s has sent home another set of champions. Our local series are coming to a close and a new set of competitors have risen to the top. As the end of another race season is drawing to a close, I present a challenge to all of the of the promoter and series organizers to consider our riders’ needs as we look forward to next year. If you are receiving this newspaper, you’re a part of one of the largest and most competitive regions in the country. We have the NORTHEAST classic series, MDRA series, Ultimate series, District 7 Gold Series, MAMA series, PA MX Series and Master of Motocross series. All of these series run in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia. Every track is within three or four hours of each other, and they all require the riders to purchase a membership card. This year I had so many parents that have multiple children racing who have asked me why they need to purchase a card if they’re not racing the whole series. This is a very legitimate question. My challenge, or question, to the other three writers on this page, and the other series officers, is why can’t we recognize each others’ membership cards? The riders could ride as many races in as many series as they want as long as they had ONE current membership card from a series. The stipulation is that IF you want to be considered for year-end awards you MUST have a membership card from that series. The membership cards are what pay for some of the year-end awards’ expense. A parent with two children racing three different series has a membership cost of $150 or more and $78.00 in AMA membership fees. This is too much for a new racer to be paying. We must attract new customers to our series, not make it cost prohibitive. We as promoters, track owners and series organizers need to encourage our riders to race all of the different series and different tracks. We need to attract riders to participate rather than charge them every time they want to experience, or experiment, at a different track. The professional racer with a license can compete in any

AMA-sanctioned series throughout the country with the purchase of ONE pro card. Yes, professional racers pay a higher fee to the AMA and have paid their dues over the years. The economy is still struggling, and gas prices are on the rise. Why can’t we all work together as one big family under Motorcycle Racing Action’s region? The AMA this year is presenting a “Recognized District Organization” (RDO) program for everyone to participate in. This is not just for the geographical regions like District 5, District 6, District 7 and District 13. All series and organizations are encouraged to participate. This way all members would recognize each other’s members. In this country we enjoy the freedom of doing what we want. Every man should be entitled to charge whatever price he wants for his hard work. However, as a group, we can recognize each other’s members to compete and compare their skills against our own members without taxing them extra fees. We have five races left in what has turned out to be a very competitive and one of the best-attended series in the region. The Tomahawk race turned out great, even though the weather caused a few issues. We would like to thank Tomahawk for allowing MAMA to ride on this premiere track. Budds Creek is our next race on September 5th and 6th. John Beasley at Budds Creek always provides a great venue, and turnout will be high. With the use of the Kiosk, your wait times for sign-up are minimal, as many members have experienced. MDRA President’s Corner Hey All Racers!

We have three rounds of the MDRA series left this year. The race turnout has been the best in the area. We have a great youth following and have been enjoying all the kids and their families. I want to invite all the racers in the area to attend the Shootout on October 17-18 at Pleasure Valley. The MDRA Series will be defending the title this year there. The Shootout program has been changed a little. The top seven riders in each class from the MDRA, Ultimate, and PAMX are seeded to the Sunday program. Any rider that is a member of one of the three series can try to qualify on Saturday for the other 19 spots. The A purse is $5,000! Come out and help your series bring the Shootout championship back. Jeff Yentzer and I are very proud of the MDRA riders and the series this year; we had 12 riders in the 50cc class at Loretta’s, which is 10% of the total 50cc riders that qualified. This is a huge statement! We will continue to promote great races to help the riders become better competitors. Furthermore, we had over 13 MDRA members in the top 10 this year at Loretta’s. Way to go! Sounds like if you want to get faster, you need to race the MDRA series. You won’t find these statistics in any other series in this area. Loretta Lynns AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship August 4-8, 2009 - By Matt Wozney

After five months of qualifying and preparation, the world’s biggest amateur motocross event kicked off for the 28th annual AMA/Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championships at the Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. The Northeast’s top racers and their families were off to experience the biggest week of amateur racing, and the hot, humid weather that Loretta’s is always known for makes for some of the toughest and most unexpected conditions all week long. For a few days, conditions would be hot and very humid, but some days, the clouds threw a curveball to everyone below with brief but strong, stormy weather with even an occasional tornado warning one night. Just like the weather at Loretta’s, the racing was just as unpredictable, and many of the Northeast’s top racers either made it or broke it at the ranch. The most dominant Northeast racer at Loretta’s this year was Carver, Masschusetts, native Keith Johnson as he took his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Team Green Kawasaki machine to two championships in the Junior 25 Plus class (3-2-1) and Vet 35 Plus (1-1-1). While the competition was doing whatever they could to keep pace, Johnson made it look as easy as he always does anywhere he goes, and his strong consistency paid off, as it usually does for everyone at Loretta’s. Johnson’s fellow Team Green Kawasaki vet rider, Mike Treadwell of Dixfield, Maine, finished 2-3-2

in both the Vet 35 Plus and Senior 40 Plus classes for second overall. Treadwell had some competition from Johnson in Vet 35 Plus and also Dr. D himself, Doug Dubach, who won six motos and two championships in the Senior 40 Plus and Senior 45 Plus classes. In the Senior 45 Plus class, John Camelio, another top New England vet racer, rode very well in the hot Tennessee weather and finished just off the podium with a 4-4-5

moto score for fourth overall. Pennsylvania’s Jeremy Cook rode to two top 10 finishes on the week in the Junior 25 Plus and Four Stroke classes. Cook went 7-6-3 for fifth overall in Junior 25 Plus and 10-7-10 for seventh overall in Four Stroke. The A classes were littered with the Northeast’s best up and coming experts or pros at Loretta Lynn’s. In the 450 A class, PR2’s own Shane Durham put on a strong fourth-place overall finish, but he quickly followed that up with another strong third overall finish in Four Stroke. Pennsylanvia’s Garrett Toth ran the same classes as Durham and proved to be in the top 10 as well with a ninth overall in 450 A and a fifth overall in Four Stroke. Also, in 450 A, New York’s Sunny Drake finished in the top 10 with a sixth-place overall finish, and Connecticut’s Josh Clark finished with a 8-15-8 finish for eighth overall. Josh Clark showed off his best overall finish in the 450 A/Pro Sport class, as he went

7-10-6 for 5th overall. Clark was also the only Northeast rider to finish in the top 10 of the 450 A/Pro Sport class. The 250 A and 250 A/Pro Sport classes saw the two stroke trifecta of Pennsylvania’s Brian Shuckhart and Broc Schmelyun and Maryland’s Daniel Corbin. Schmelyun showed some flashes of brilliance on the week by leading a couple of motos in both classes and keeping up with some of the fastest A racers in the country. Schmelyun went 6-6-14 for sixth overall in 250 A, which is by far his best showing at the ranch. 250 A/Pro Sport didn’t favor Schmelyun as much with a 21st overall finish in that class. Daniel Corbin was a rider on a mission all week and cracked the top 10 with a 10th overall finish in 250 A with a 1011-12 finish. Like Schmelyun, Corbin didn’t show the best results in 250 A/Pro Sport, as he got 22nd overall. Brian Shuckhart had to overcome lots of troubles on the track that included banners, bibs and everything in between. Shuckhart did not favor too well, as he finished 21st in 250 A but went home with his best finish, a 13th, in 450 A. One Northeast rider who did fare well in 250 A/Pro Sport was Pennsylvania’s Lowell Spangler, who went 18-8-7 for seventh overall. Spangler also competed in 250 A, but mechanical DNFs cost him in two motos, while putting up a seventh in moto 2, to finish him out with a 31st overall finish. The 250 B Stock and Modified classes saw the continued two stroke excitement of Connecticut’s Jason Brooks, who brought out his Yamaha YZ250 to two seventhplace overall finishes in both classes. For a rider who has had to overcome injuries the past year, Brooks came out swinging after a dominant performance at the Northeast Amateur Regional Qualifier at High Point back in late June. Brooks threw down some lucky 7’s to get those seventh-place finishes. In 250 B Stock, Brooks started off with a crash in moto 1 to finish 22nd but followed up with his best moto finish on the week, a third in moto 2, and fifth in moto 3 to get him the seventh overall spot. In 250 B Modified, Brooks rolled with a 5-5-11 to get seventh overall. In 450

B Modified, AJ Catanzaro, also another Connecticut rider, stood up in the top 10 with a fourth overall finish. The expectations were high for AJ, but a sore ankle kept him from going his full potential all week, and after impressive podium finishes in the B classes last year, Catanzaro was looking forward to a chance at the #1 plate, but check Maryland’s Tony Archer finished sixth him soon in the A classes overall in Schoolboy 2 (14-16). in the near future to turn some more heads. August 5 The sun was out, and the skies were blue for rounds 3 and 4 of the Kevin McNicholas Series, which are also rounds 6 and 7 of the Mid-Atlantic Short Track Series brought to us by the Baltimore County Trail Riders Association. Once again we were back down in Timonium for two more nights of actionpacked racing. The track consistency has changed from night to night, giving many competitors an equal chance of winning. One rider that seemed to be adapting very well to the different conditions is # 29a Donnie Mullen. Though Mullen, “Mr. Shorttrack,” is known for his amazing bike-handling abilities on the indoor concrete tracks, he has shown that he has now mastered the dirt. Winning every heat and final he has entered seemed like a breeze for Mullen, as he has 24 perfect victories in our series. Round #6, 8/5/09, was his first defeat, when Mullen was given a bad starting position in the Open A heat that may have led to a bad start. Lots of credit for the heat loss goes to local talent #34 Jason Isennock from Timonium. Isennock pulled the holeshot and rode a flawless race for a heat win. Isennock repeated a holeshot for the Open A main over Mullen, Raun Wood, Chris Klinefelter, Jake Shoemaker, and a handful of other fast riders. While finishing off the first lap, Isennock realized his gas was turned off. He lost momentum while trying frantically

to turn it back on and ended up in the wall, stopping the race. The race was restarted and had to be stopped two more times due to other crashes. Mullen ended up taking the win, followed by Jake Shoemaker and Raun Wood. Isennock, from the penalty row, battled his way up into fourth. Isennock pulled another holeshot in the Sportsman over Mullen and Wood. Wood was driving hard into turn three trying to take advantage of the space Isennock was leaving open. With two laps to go, Woods got a drive going into three, putting him on the inside of Isennock, giving him the position. Mullen took over the second spot, coming out of the last turn where he stalled Isennock. Klinefelter, along with the rest of the pack, got around Isennock. National #88 Raun Wood is the first rider to beat Mullen in a main event in the MidAtlantic Short Track Series. Another rider with near perfection is #41 Colton Smith. Smith has won every heat and main but one in the Kids 150 class, 85 12-15 class, and 125 class at Timonium. His only

Jeremiah Snow came home with a win in both the 250 B and Open B classes. In both classes, Kevin Bills was within striking distance if Snow made a mistake. Jacob Cranston, Rebecca Zafia and Erin Kissinger were three of the main contenders following Bills and Snow. Dylan Almony #69 pulled two holeshots in the 85 7-11 class over Cameron Smith, Brandon Price, Nathan Reichert, and Dustin Healey. Smith stuck with Almony, waiting for a mistake that did not come. Nathan Reichert #16 got out in front of Chase Smith in the 50 7-8 to pull away with a win. Joey Alexander #14 pulled ahead of Ryan Heagy #13 to win the 250 Sportsman class.

loss was acquired after going down in the first turn of the 125 main. On Wednesday, Smith had to battle his way past Ryan Dragunas, who pulled both holeshots in the 85 and Kids 150 classes. In the 125 class, Smith had to maneuver his way through Joey Alexander and Sam Bergman. Raymond Jenkins #25 grabbed another victory Wednesday night in the 40+ class. He was followed by Damian Kocovinos, William Kraft, Paul Darmafall, and Carmen Visalli. Jack Stedding took the 30+ win. His wife, Josie Stedding #32, also took home a win in the Women’s class. Jacob Gast #3 took a win on his KTM in the 50 chain 4-8 class over Burke Marsiglia, Joshua Cole, and Ethan Stroh. Brandon #69 and #15- Dillon Almony held off #15 Cameron Smith to Price #92 took the take the win in the 85 7-11 class. win in the 65 class

Matt Langrehr pulled the holeshot in the Vintage class on his father’s Bultaco. Jason Isennock and Chris Klinefelter split around Langrehr in the first two turns on their Triumphs. Isennock and Klinefelter put on a show and Isennock came home with the win. Samantha Bergman #95 inched her way past last week’s winner Joe Dragunas at the finish line for the win. Dragunas held a steady lead while Bergman pressured him on the outside until he made a mistake. Dragunas and Bergman drifted out to the wall, almost letting Albert Cook by as they drag raced to the checkers. August 7 Friday night was full of nail-biting action. The classes were larger than Wednesday, leaving less room on the track to maneuver. Jimmy Hollister #14 made another return after only racing one time in the past two years. Raymond Jenkins #25 got the jump over Hollister and Robert Crabbe in the heat race that he went on to win. Hollister took the start in the final, getting out and ahead of Jenkins, Crabbe, Damian Kocovinos, William Kraft, and four other riders. Jenkins followed close behind Hollister waiting for a chance to strike.

#32- Josie Stedding #32 has been a contender in the Women’s class and puts up a fight against the younger ladies.

About halfway through the race, Jenkins found an opening going into three where he made his move. Hollister settled into second with Crabbe close behind. Crabbe made a move under Hollister between turns three and four, accidentally hitting the tire of Jenkins. Crabbe low sided and dropped back to sixth before reentering the race. Jenkins went on to win the race followed by Hollister and Kocovinos. The blood must be strong in the Mullen family because “Mr. Shorttrack” Donnie Mullen has an older brother that may soon be challenging Donnie’s position. Perry “Ace” Phillips #18 has proven that he too has the skills on a motorcycle. Whether Donnie taught Ace or Ace taught Donnie is unknown; they both carry the ability to win on a motorcycle. Phillips took the heat win in the 30+ class with #86 Richard Mellinger pressuring him every second. Henry Mangels made his return to the races after bike problems surfacing almost a year ago. Mangels hung with Phillips and Mellinger until tiring and falling back toward the end of the race. Phillips managed to pull the holeshot in the main and took his Honda to another win, followed by Mellinger, Mangels, and Jack Stedding. Jacob Gast #3 once again took the victory in the 50 4-6 chain class. Gast won his heat with #17 Damon Ream close behind. Little #5 Burke Marsiglia took a spill coming out of turn two and sprung back up like his life depended on it. The little guy showed the heart that is in these young beginning riders that will fuel them to become something great in the future. Gast pulled the start in the main, battling with Ream until Gast pulled away and took his little KTM to the finish. Ream fell at the finish line with a lap to go, giving Ethan Stroh the second position, followed by Marsiglia and then “Smiling” Joshua Cole. It was #44 Kaiden Rhoads who took the win in the 50 4-8 shaft driven class. Nicholas Crone #7 pulled the holeshot and led Rhoads and Damon Ream for a good bit of the race. Rhoads was on the tail of Crone while Ream was running on the outside of Rhoads. Rhoads made a pass for the lead just before hitting lapped traffic. Crone took advantage of the lapped traffic but couldn’t make a pass, so he had to settle for second, followed by Ream, Alex Thomas, Ethan Stroh, and Braden Winsett. Chase Smith #14 took the start over Nathan Reichert, Zachery Kolsovsky, and Alex Thomas in the 50 7-8 class. Smith gave Reichert #16 the lead after a bobble off of the infield sand. Reichert pulled away for the win with Smith in second and Kolsovsky finishing third. Reichert went on to win the 65 class as well. He pulled the start with Brandon Price tight on his heals,

followed by Dustin Healey and Chase Smith. Price went down in turn three going for the lead on the third lap. Healey tagged Reichert while they went through lapped riders battling until the finish. Reichert had the win, followed by Healey, Smith, Chris Thomas, and Dillion Curry. The 85 7-11 class was full of excitement with Cameron Smith, Dustin Healey, Brandon Price, Joey Wanner, and Kenneth Kolsovsky. Smith went down going into the first turn, where he collected Price and Wanner. Healey was the sole survivor of the lap before they had the restart. Healey was the only one on the front row for the restart, so he took the start with no problem. Smith had to work his way around price in order to gain the second position behind Healey. Smith continues his charge to pass Healey on the outside and take the lead. Smith finishes the race with four bikes over Healey, and Price finishes less than a bike behind Healey after a large charge. Albert Cook #2 has shown great progress in the series. When he lined up for the 125 main, he jumped the start and broke his clutch lever. The race was restarted with Cook circling in the back. Joey Alexander #14 pulled the holeshot over Colton Smith, Samantha Bergman, Joe Dragunas, and Sean Simmons. Bergman was running second until Smith made his move going into turn one. Smith made the pass on Alexander in turn 3 to take the lead. Cook worked his way back to fifth after passing Simmons with one lap to go. Smith went on

to win the race. Smith put himself up front in the 85 12-15 class ahead of Ryan Dragunas, Austin Tippett, and Joseph Juergens. Smith

Samantha Bergman worked her way past Gregory Lerch, Kissinger and Kevin Bills just before the finish for fifth place. Jason Isenock aboard his uncle’s #30 Triumph took the lead over Chris Klinefelter, Matt Langrehr, and William Kraft in the Vintage class. Klinefelter and Isenock swapped positions back and forth to put on an amazing show for the crowd. Langrehr passed his uncle, William Kraft, on the #57 machine to take over the third position. Isennock was the first to cross the line, followed by Klinefelter, Langrehr, and Kraft. The 250 Sportsman class was full of action with both amateur and expert riders. Jesse Long pulled the holeshot on his “Trout”-owned machine, followed by his brother Johnny and competitor Daniel Bromley. Bromley made a move on Johnny Long, when Long bobbed coming off of four to gain the second spot. Joey Alexander was running fifth before he charged past #3 Tyler Phillips. Alexander made his way up to Johnny Long but didn’t have any time to do anything. Jesse Long took home the win,

followed by Daniel Bromley, Johnny Long, and Joey Alexander. Joe Dragunas #6 got off a perfect start ahead of Mike Sponseller, Albert Cook, and Samantha Bergman. Cook and Sponseller went down coming out of turn four, causing a restart. Off the line, #32 Jack Stedding went down, leaving Saun Simmons and Cook with nowhere to go but over top of him. The race was stopped once again, and the riders relined for another start. Dragunas pulled another holeshot ahead of Bergman and Matt Langrehr. Bergman took her TSI Racing machine past Dragunas going into turn one to take over the lead. Dragunas goes out to the wall, and Cook slips in to take the second position. Bergman and Cook pulled ahead of the pack to a first and second finish. Dragunas came in third with Langrehr behind him. Sponseller kept his lead over Simmons to keep the fifth position. Delaney Cadden took the women’s class lead into the first turn on her #9 Honda. Cadden went wide, leaving the door open for Amanda Hardy, Melissa Hildebrand, and Josee Stedding. Hardy pulled away for a victory, with Hildebrand taking second. Cadden and Stedding battled back and forth changing positions several times. Cadden made a pass on the outside of turn three to take over the third position. Stedding returned the pass and kept the spot for a third-place finish. Jennifer Hildebrand ran her own race for a fifth-place finish. Raun Wood was first off the line on the # 16 in the Open A class. He led Donnie Mullen, Jason Isennock, Joey Parks, Chris Klinefelter, and five other fast guys. Mullen made a move past Wood going into turn three. Wood kept up with Mullen, trying to get a drive on the inside. Dalton Winkler went down in turn two toward the end of the race, causing a red flag. Due to the percentage of the race completed, the race was ended and Mullen got the win. Wood came in second with Isennock, Parks, and Klinefelter finishing out the top five. Joey Parks mounted on the # 38s Honda reacted quickest to the green light at the start of the Sportsman class. Before Parks could make any ground, Mullen grabbed the holeshot and was first into the turn. Parks held the second position with Isennock nipping at his heels. Isennock got a drive under Parks coming out of four that set him up for a pass between turns one and two. Raun Wood was the next to get past Parks to take over third before Parks went down and into the bales in turn three. finished the race with another win with Dragunas close by. Juergens almost took the third position away from Tippett when Tippett bobbed. Tippett took third and Juergens took fourth. Dragunas running #6 pulled the holeshot in the Kids 150 class over Colton Smith, Cameron Smith, Jeremy Duggan, and Ryan Varnes. Dragunas went wide in turn three, giving Colton Smith the lead. Cameron Smith stayed close to the two leaders but couldn’t make a move. Varnes was running fourth until he fell at the line midway through the race, giving Duggan the position. Colton Smith brought home the win. Joey Alexander #14 pulled the holeshot in the 250B class over Tyler Phillips, Daniel Bromley, Kevin Bills, Jeremiah Snow, and Erin Kissinger. Bromley was running in second until he fell in turn four. Snow was on the outside of Phillips while battling Bills for second. Kissinger was running a steady race just ahead of Ryan Connelly, Joseph Bromley, and Rebecca Zafia. Alexander walked away with the win, followed by Phillips, Bills, and Snow. Jason Cunningham #14x got the jump on Stephen Lerch, Joseph Bromley, Jeffery Mcmanus, and Erin Kissinger. Lerch made a move on Cunningham on the outside to take over the lead. Gregory Lerch was in the hunt when Kissinger put a move on him and his

Mother Nature tried to put a damper on the action with plenty of rain the evening prior to the event. If that wasn’t enough, a large thunderstorm moved through the area in the afternoon, and the race program was halted for a short period due to lightning. The promoter held a short riders’ meeting to determine if the riders wanted to continue. Expert riders decided to call it a day, but the amateurs wanted to continue the battle for the much soughtafter series points. Kawasaki pilot Tyler Conner topped the podium of the 250 B division. Conner started the opening moto second and took the lead just before the start of lap two. Conner led for a half-lap until a crash pushed him back to fourth, but Conner fought back to second by the checkers. In the final moto, reduced to three laps due to the soupy conditions, Conner shared the holeshot with Steven Sparks. Conner took the point in the third turn and took the checkers and the overall with a three-second advantage. Sparks took the second with a 1-3, and Addison Yingling (3-2) finished third. Alex Hildebrand, Conner, Eavan Ellefsen and Steven Sparks led the start of the first 250 B moto. Conner displaced Hildebrand to second at the end of lap one. Sparks, Yingling and Dana Krause rounded out the top five. Conner made a mistake and went down near the two and a half lap mark. Hildebrand inherited the lead with Sparks and Yingling behind. Conner re-mounted fourth. Krause remained fifth. Hildebrand started lap three with a three-second cushion, and Sparks closed the gap on Hildebrand to a second and a half while Conner began pressuring Yingling for third. Conner’s pressure paid off just after the start of lap four. Yingling was relegated to fourth. Hildebrand cross-rutted in the big sweeper by the start area and went down. Sparks took the point, Conner

second and Yingling third. Hildebrand remounted fourth. Sparks held on for the last half lap, taking the checkers a second ahead of Conner. Yingling, Hildebrand and Krause completed the top five. Sparks and Conner were side by side in the second turn at the start of the final 250 B moto. Conner took the point in the third turn. Yingling, Sparks, Justin Maylath and Michael Fowler followed. Conner had a three-second lead at the start of the last lap that increased to four at the checkered flag. Yingling, Sparks, Maylath and Fowler closed out the top five. Richard White, Matthew Hougentogler, Dylan Braykovich, Brain Mulcahy and David Szymansky led the pack out of the second turn in the first and only Open A division moto. White continued to hold the point at the start of lap two with Braykovich now in second and closing. Hougentogler, Mulcahy and Szymansky rounded out the top five. White had a three-second lead after two and a half laps. Braykovich closed the gap on White to a bike-length at the start of lap three but couldn’t make a pass until just after the start of lap four on the Flat track section of the racecourse. White was displaced to second. Hougentogler reeled White in and made the pass, taking second along the back tree line after five and quarter laps. White was relegated to third. Braykovich took checkers four seconds ahead of Hougentogler. White, Szymansky and Jim Doolittle followed. Miles Mountain D6 Quad - August 9, 2009

By Michael Salerno - RoxstarImages.com The 2009 District 6 Ultimate Quad Series returned to Miles Mountain in the rolling hills of Elkland, Pa. Unlike the last round, rains came and gave the track a heavy dousing, making the practice and the first sets of motos very treacherous. Bike setup is key

in these conditions. Duct tape on the front helps keep mud from packing up the radiator, taller tires helps in the deep ruts and for the excursions out of the racing line, and roll offs for the goggles is a must. But as the second set of motos started, sun had definitely come

out, slowly drying the track, which allowed riders to return to their normal race setups. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long, as the skies once again opened up and forced the track crew to cut some last remaining motos. Open “C” class had the familiar face of Sam Campbell on the #323 Honda taking both moto wins; he has really extended his lead in the series points. Just Carr and Hayes Dangerfield took the second and third spots, respectively. Open “A” and ProAm had #28

Trevor Borger with a perfect day, even in these conditions, with four moto wins to his credit. Austin Murphy took second overall in both “A” and ProAm. The College Boy class saw Tyler Dommel cruise to a 1-1 finish with #592 Robert Mcghee and the #24 Landon Herbst, both on Suzukis, rounding out the podium. The #01 of Dommel was able to back up his performance again in the Open”B” class The little guys had some troubles in the mud, so a shorter track was made for them,

He did just that with a 2-2 finish, which gave him the overall win. Dale Raven continues to pull away in the series points in both 50cc Prod and the 50cc Stock classes. Even Mother Nature doesn’t seem to stop him from getting overall wins. Alan Myers takes the Quad Jr. Mini overall win over Kevin Kubinak and Bryor Barto. In the 70cc Prod CVT class, Adam Devonshire took top honors, edging out Travis Wotring and Logan Bishop.

Wotring would have his revenge in the Quad Sr. Mini class, taking the overall win. In the 200cc 2st/300cc 4st class, Zack Sinz went 4-3 for the overall win, and Matt Shroyer and Nicholas Walls took the second and third positions. There are three rounds left, and everyone is pushing hard for those valuable points. The next round will be at Hurricane Hills in Clifford, Pa., Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5th and 6th. Brandon Price #92 took the wins in both the 65 and 85 12-15 classes. These were well-earned wins for Price, who has been so close in the past couple of weeks.

We’re back down in Timonium for the last two races of the Kevin McNicholas Series. These races are also rounds 8 and 9 of the MidAtlantic Series brought to you by the Baltimore County Trail Riders Association. As we get down to the last couple of races in the series, things are getting more serious between some of the riders. The series will end in October with two more races up in Delta at the MasonDixon Fairgrounds. All classes will award riders who have attended a certain percentage of the races and finish with more points than their competitors. These riders will also receive prizes and cash awards. Temperatures were pretty high, and the humidity was very brutal for practice on Wednesday. As the sun went down, the air cooled and the heat races began. Before too long, the heats were finished and the track was being prepped for the main events. Much effort on the Trail Riders part has been put into building the best possible track conditions. Hours of work, on both race days and off days, are spent prepping the surface. The night started off with the main event for the 40+ and 30+ classes. Jack Stedding took the win in the 30+ on his #32 Crf150. Raymond Jenkins #25 took another win in the 40+ class, where he pulled ahead of William Kraft, Damian Kocovinos, Paul Darmafall, and Billy Young. This was Jenkins’ sixth win throughout the series. Colton Smith #41 had a perfect night where he added three more wins to his belt. His first win was in the 125 class over Joey Alexander, Albert Cook, Samantha Bergman, Joe Dragunas, and three other riders. Ryan Dragunas came in second behind Smith in the 85 12-15 class, followed by Joseph Juergens, Petey Clonell, and Austin Tippett. Tippett has made some improvement over the year but lacks the proper setup on his bike, making

it difficult to keep the bike off the ground. Dragunas came in second behind Smith in the Kids 150 class, with Cameron Smith close behind. Cameron took the third position in front of Cody Bauer and Jeremiah Snow. Albert Cook #2 took the win in the Adult 150 class after a battle with Scottie Barnes. Barnes dropped back to second where he entered another battle, this time with Samantha Bergman. While the battle went on, Cook got a substantial lead and took the win. With little time left Bergman took over Barnes’ spot and finished second. Barnes took third, followed by Matt Langrehr, Jake Cranston, Joe Dragunas, and Sean Simmons close behind. The Women’s class had a very tight battle between Josee Stedding and Delaney Cadden. Cadden stuck right by Stedding’s rear wheel waiting for a mistake or opening. Stedding crossed the line first and won the race with Cadden right on her heels. Jacob Gast #3 took another win in the 50 4-8 class. Burke Marsiglia finished in the second spot in front of Ethan Stroh, Joshua Cole, and Connor Rankin. The 50 4-8 Shaft class went to repeated winner Kaiden Rhoads on his #44x Yamaha. Rhoads has had to battle with Nicholas Crone, who finished second, and Hunter Conrad, who came in third. Tim Colonell finished in fourth, followed by Tyree Moore. The Shaft class was the largest class with eleven riders. The 50 7-8 class win went to Nathan Reichert #16 for his sixth win of the series. Chase Smith finished in the second spot, followed by Jake Gast and Trever Williams. Brandon Price took home two wins on his #92 machines. He started the night with a win in the 65 class with Dustin Healey, Nathan Reichert, and Chris Thomas close behind. Dillion Curry came home with a fifth-place finish, beating out Tyree Moore. Price held off Cameron Smith to get a victory in the 85 7-11 class. Healey came in third just ahead of Nathan Reichert. Price has earned five wins in the series where he is currently in second place in both the 65 and 85 7-11 classes. The 250B class was led by the #14 Joey Alexander, who came home with the victory. Jeremiah Snow was close behind to put in a second-place finish, followed by Rebecca Zafia, Anthony Crabbe, and Landon Wolf. The Open B win went to Crabbe #38, who held off Zafia, Samantha Bergman, Jeffery McManus, Matt Langrehr, and Jeremiah Snow. This was

Crabbe’s first win of the series, which had to make him very proud. Langrehr finished third in the Vintage class behind Jason Isennock and Chris Klinefelter. Isennock took the win by only a wheel over Klinefelter. The Vintage class started on the front row with the 250 Sportsman class lined up on the back row. Nicholas Henderson #29 passed everyone up to Klinefelter before the checkered flag was thrown. Henderson had a large lead over Joey Alexander and Landon Wolf. The Sportsman class contained six fast riders, and each had an equal chance to take the win. Jake Shoemaker #55a got the jump over Jason Isennock, Chris Klinefelter, Nicholas Henderson, Michael Staniford, and Joey Parks. Isennock stayed within striking distance of Shoemaker but never got a chance to make a move, giving Shoemaker the win. Klinefelter finished third on Isennocks tail, followed by Parks, Staniford, and Henderson. The Open A class looked like ballet on motorcycles. The same six riders from the Sportsman race put on a show by repeatedly swapping places back and forth. At times the riders were running four abreast in both the straight-aways and turns. The crowd was on its feet and going crazy. The Open A race ended the night with great excitement.

Aug. 14 Friday started with the same humidity that was present during Wednesday’s practice. Riders were trying to find any advantage over their competitors. Some forced their way into transfer spots so that they could make the last main at Timonium for the outdoor year. The races were full of action, and the battles were tight. Jimmy Hollister #14 started off the night with a win over Robert Crabbe in the 40+ class. Hollister was riding one of the sole Rotax’s at the track rather than one of the newer 450s. This was Hollister’s second race back since last year, and he proved that he still has it. Crabbe put in a good race for a second-place finish in front of Wednesday’s winner, Raymond Jenkins. Jenkins finished third just in front of fourth-place finisher Damian Kocovinos. Richard Mellinger #86 got the jump over Dillon Cava, Perry Phillips, Henry Mangels, and Jack Stedding. Phillips tried to make a move on Mellinger going into turn three. The move put him out wide where he lost a position to Cava. Phillips got past Cava

almost making a move on Smith and Price. Healey ended up with a well-earned win followed by Price, Smith, Reichert, and Colin Cunningham. Both 250 classes had bumping and grinding that led to a war on the track. Riders were taking positions from each other in each turn. Joey Bromley #5 came out of turn two with brother Dan Bromley by his side. Joey Alexander was running in third until he forced his way through Dan Bromley, taking the number two spot. Alexander charges on Joey Bromley and almost high-sides over Bromley’s rear tire and drops to fourth. Erin Kissinger took over the second spot with Dan Bromley hot at her heels. Dan Bromley made a pass on Kissinger and finished the race in second, behind his brother. Alexander passed Kissinger in turn two to finish in third. Kissinger ended up fourth, followed by Jeremiah Snow, Ryan Connelly, and Bruce Cunningham. Nicholas Henderson #29 pulled the holeshot in the 250 Sportsman class over Johnny Long, Jesse Long, Dan Bromley, and Joey Alexander. Jesse Long takes over the second position and goes after Henderson. Jesse gets a good drive under Henderson and ends up putting Jesse into the wall. Coming out of turn four Landon Wolf got together with Joe Bromley and went down blocking the turn. The race was restarted single file with Henderson in front and Wolf last. Joe Bromley was unable to reenter the race. Henderson ended up with the win with Johnny Long in second. Alexander made a pass on Dan Bromley in turn three to take the third spot. Bromley finished in fourth, followed by Jesse Long, Jason Cunningham, Donnie Mullen, “Mr. Shorttrack,” takes the checkers for his 15th victory Jeremiah Snow, and Landon Wolf. in the Mid-Atlantic Short Track Series. The Open B class was a tight battle between ten riders. Three of the top six riders were women. Rebecca Zafia #16 pulled the holeshot over Erin Kissinger, Gregory Lerch, and Jason Cunningham. Samantha Bergman got in line behind Anthony Crabbe, who was running in sixth behind Stephen Lerch. Stephen Lerch made it up into fifth, where he battled his brother Gregory and Cunningham. Stephen stayed on the outside, where he ended up crashing at the wall in turn four. Zafia pulled away for the win with Kissinger in second. Sportsman class followed by Isennock, Klinefelter, and Joey Parks. Perry “Ace” Phillips was running in seventh until he went under Dillon Cava and Staniford to gain two positions at one time. Phillips pushed his way through Parks to take over fourth. Parks returned the favor, before Phillips got him again. Mullen pulled off a win in front of Isennock, Klinefelter, Phillips, Staniford, and Parks. One class that has grown serious throughout the year is the Adult 150 class. Going into the main there are many riders that could come out on top. The front row was made up of the #95 Samantha Bergman, #2 Albert Cook, #61 Saun Simmons, and the #47c of Jason Cole. Cook was first off the line before a pile up began in turn one. Simmons went down collecting Joseph Maher and Matt Langrehr for a restart. On the restart, Bergman got the inside jump, where she had a wheel on Cook. Coming out of turn two Cook got into the loose stuff by the wall and let Joe Dragunas by. Cook fought his way past Dragunas without enough time to catch Bergman. Bergman came home with her fourth win of the year, followed by Cook, Dragunas, and Richard Foard. This was the last of the races at Timonium for our series. The next races are going to be held at Mason-Dixon Fairgrounds on Oct. 16 and 17. but later lost the position again. Within the last couple of laps, Cava was side by side with Mellinger trying to take the lead. Mellinger pulled off the win, with Cava in second and Phillips third. They were so tight across the line that you could have thrown a blanket over them. The 50 4-8 class had a curveball when the leading rider Jake Gast fell going into turn one shortly after the race had started. Ethan Stroh took over the lead while Gast dropped back to fourth. Gast got past Connor Rankin and Burke Marsiglia before he could work on Stroh. Gast took over the lead with Stroh right on his tail. Stroh was unable to pressure Gast, giving Gast the win and his sixth victory of the series. Stroh came in second, followed by Marsiglia, Rankin, and Joshua Cole. Nicholas Crone pulled the holeshot in the 50 Shaft class and was leading Kaiden Rhoads and Hunter Conrad. To no surprise, Rhoads #44x made a pass on Crone coming out of turn four to take over the lead when Crone ran wide into lapped traffic. Wyatt Conrad, Tim Colonell, Tyree Moore, and Ethan Stroh were battling for the remaining top five positions when Conrad’s #47 machine fell to the sand in turn 3. Hunter Conrad got past Crone and raced Rhoads to the finish. Rhoads added another win to his belt, leaving Hunter Conrad with a second. Rhoads is five for six down at Timonium with one lose to Hunter Conrad on one of the first nights. Nathan Reichert #16 repeated his sixth win in the 50 7-8 class over second-place finisher Chase Smith. Smith has been there every race but seems to have trouble with traction. His bike wants to wash out on him. Smith had the early lead until Reichert passed him in turns one and two. Smith finished in second in front of Jake Gast, Andrew Brodbeck, Alex Thomas, Karl Wheeler, and Trever Williams. Joey Alexander #14 came home with a win in the 125 class. Alexander beat Colton Smith, Samantha Bergman, and Albert Cook off the line in the 125 class. Smith tried to drive it under Alexander going into turn three, going down just before contact would have happened with Alexander. Smith proved that he is a respectable rider and didn’t take advantage of a sticky situation. Bergman took over second after Smith went down, also moving Cook into third. Joe Dragunas came home with fourth and Matt Eichelberger fifth. Smith got the jump on #10 Ryan Dragunas in the 85 12-15 class and kept a safe distance in front to bring home the win. Smith and Dragunas checked out on Petey Colonell and Austin Tippett battling in the back. Colton Smith had his hands full in the Kids 150 class when Cameron Smith #15 got the holeshot. Dragunas had second before Colton took the position away. Jeremy Duggan held off Amanda Hardy until Hardy made a pass. Hardy then set her sights on #3 Jeff Staniford, who was running in fifth. With one lap to go, Dragunas went down coming out of four, giving Cody Bauer the third spot. Colton got alongside Cameron and was working on the pass when the checkered flag came. Cameron got the win, Colton in second, Bauer in third, and Staniford finished with a fourth. The 65 class was full of action with all ten riders. Colin Cunningham #29a was first in the turn, just ahead of Nathan Reichert, Brandon Price, and Dustin Healey. Price got past Reichert and took over the second spot. Reichert tried to take the low line under Price and went down. Healey took over third with Chase Smith and Chris Thomas battling for fourth. Cunningham took the win by only inches over Price. Healey pulled the holeshot in the 85 7-11 class over Cameron Smith, Price, and Reichert. Smith tried to make a move in turn four on the outside of Healey when Price stayed tight and took Smith’s position away. Reichert put himself right in the battle,

Alexander were the four women trying for the victory. Stedding accidentally jumped the start, putting her on the penalty row. When the light went to go green for the second time, pole sitter Amanda Hardy jumped the start. With two starts down, Alexander was first off the line for the third. Cadden was second off the line and held the position until Hardy made a pass for the spot. Hardy didn’t stop there; she charged and passed Alexander for the lead. Alexander had trouble in turn two and ended up going down. Stedding made her way past the downed Alexander and then fought her way past Cadden for a second-place finish. Hardy pulled ahead for the win. Jason Isennock and Chris Klinefelter went at it in the Vintage class, where they switched positions numerous times. Isennock ended up taking the win by a wheel over Klinefelter, who was followed by Matt Langrehr and Richard Foard. Isennock pulled off two second-place finishes behind Donnie Mullen in the Open A and Sportsman classes. Isennock and Joey Parks filed in behind Mullen in the start of the Open A main. Isennock made a mistake, giving Parks the position. Isennock made a move under Parks coming out of two that almost put Isennock into the wall. Isennock later made a move that gave him the second position. Mullen got the win with Isennock not far behind. Parks finished third ahead of Klinefelter, Toshee Ohmori, Michael Staniford, and Jonathan Jordan. Mullen got off the line first in the

#38s- Timonium is a track where riders like to hang it all out. Here is one of our local experts Joey Parks trying to get traction coming out of turn four.

We’re back down in Timonium for the Kevin McNicholas Memorial races and Round #5 of the Mid-Atlantic Short Track Series. First, I’d like to update everyone on the situation with our little local rider, Allen “Bubba” Fogle. Here is the news as of Aug. 1st; he is in our hearts and prayers: “Today Bubba was having a pretty good day. We went outside twice and just got back in his room from outside. His feedings are going good; he is getting there. He still gets pain here and there. Please keep praying for him so each day he gets stronger. We want him to walk in the hall later, but it depends on how he feels.” #36 T-shirts and stickers are available through Tiger Skins. The Timonium races are put on every summer in memory of Kevin McNicholas, a relative to some locals and a good friend to others. In his memory, partial proceeds go to fight to cure cystic fibrosis. The rain came and soaked the ground with large gusts of wind. It looked as though the races would have to be postponed until the following week, but we were in luck. After an hour postponement, the rain stopped, and the skies cleared up. The track had a good bit of moisture and a decent consistency. Riders were able to get a few laps of practice in before the races, so they didn’t have much time to adapt to the track. Due to the shortage of track time, they pushed harder on the first couple of laps, and many found themselves sprawled out on the ground. The heat races went by fairly quickly and led into tight barbanging main events. Damian Kocovinos #26 put in a hard-

Almony led the race from start to finish to take home the win. Nathan Reichert #16 battled with #66 Zachery Kolsovsky to win the 50 7-8 class. These two riders have been battling every weekend for the past two years and run bar to bar every race. Donnie Mullen #29a put in another perfect night when he took the win in both the Open A and Sportsman classes. He had to beat out many fast riders, including Raun Wood #16, Jacob Shoemaker #55a, Joey Parks #38s,

and a handful of other riders. Mullen’s brother, were 5 riders in contention for the win, running Perry “Ace” Phillips, tagged #86a Dillon Cava three-abreast for most of the race. Among before putting in a pass and grabbing the lead them were #6 Joey Dragunas, #2 Albert Cook, #53 Scott Barnes, #95 Samantha Bergman, to win the 30+ class in the last few laps. Roy Miller #56 held off #16a Jesse Long in and #50 Jason Issenock. Issenock tried to order to win the 250 Sportsman class. Miller make a move on Dragunas, when he highwas battling Travis Diem #49, Long, and sided and dropped right in front of Cook to Joey Alexander #14 earlier in the race until take them both out of the running. Bergman Alexander went down and Diem was penalized passed Barnes coming out of turn two on the last lap to finish second. Dragunas pulled for a questionable pass. Jacob Cranston #35 stepped out of his away for the win. All in all, it was a great night of racing, and shoes as a motocrosser and stepped into a very large set of boots as a dirttracker. To we look forward to seeing everyone next week everyone’s surprise, Cranston made his way for the next round of the series back here at through the pack to take home the win in the Timonium! Open B class. Colton Smith #41 took the win in both the 150 Air Cooled class and the 85 12-15 class over Ryan Dragunas. Josee Stedding #32 held off Delaney Cadden #9 to take the win in the Women’s class. Cadden made a daring move going into the last turn that put her onto the ground. Jason Issenock #30 won the Vintage class on his uncle’s Triumph. He jumped out in front and ran away with the win. The Adult 100 class was the last race of the night and full of excitement. There #16- Nathan Reichert took his second win in the 50 7-8

fought battle with the #25 Raymond Jenkins to come home with the win in the 40+ class. Jacob Gast #3 pulled ahead to win his second victory of the season in the 4-6 chain driven 50 class. Joey Alexander #14 put in two good rides that landed him with two wins for the night. He pulled the holeshot in the 125 class over #2 Albert Cook, #6 Joey Dragunas, and #41 Colton Smith. Cook was within passing distance if Alexander made a mistake, but Alexander rode consistent from start to finish. His other win was in the 250 B class, where he battled #3 Tyler Phillips and pulled away with the win. Colin Cunningham #29a took the win in the 65 7-11 class over Brandon Price #92, Nathan Reichert #16, Dustin Healey #1, and Chase Smith #14. Little Kaiden Rhoads #44 took the win in the 50 4-8 shaft drive class. Dylan Almony #69 pulled the holeshot in the 85 7-11 class two times in a row, due to the restart after Brandon Price went down after the start.

Two really cool things happened in the middle of August at the Doublin Gap MX Park. For starters, summer arrived; I believe it was the first race at Doublin this year that we didn’t have any rain, and the temps finally made it into the 90s. Some were happy about that, and some were not. Number two on the list was the annual Doublin Gap Rider Appreciation Day. Riders who signed up for two classes got an extra class for free. For some this saved them some money, and the others got some extra seat time that maybe mom and dad couldn’t normally afford. Either way, it worked out well for all and made for some great post-Loretta’s racing action. The Senior classes would kick off the day’s event with Brad Stepp taking the expert class win with Mike Reynolds grabbing the amateur win. Both these guys generally run up front, and Stepp would notch wins in both the Vet A and 25 Plus groups as well. The Open C group would be next off the gate with close to 30 entries. The racing action is always interesting in this group, and it’s no surprise that Patrick Sharkey would be out in front at the end of the day. Sharkey would be another three-class winner taking advantage of that free extra third class. Other guys nailing the hat trick included Kameron Page, Broc Schmelyun and Ryan Clites. Next up came the 50cc Stock divisions, and boy can these guys and gals fly. I think they’re

really liking the new Doublin Gap track layout because most of them are now catching some major air on the big table coming out of the old 10 commandments rhythm section. Doublin Gap’s next event will be held on Sept. 26 and 27 and will feature factory contingencies for a PAMX State Championship Series race.
