PA State Hare Scramble Series and AMA National Rausch Creek - July 17-18, 2010 By Maggie Platko Delong, Lafferty, and Wolfe take 1st place overall at the AMA Triple National Hare Scramble. With this weekend’s race being split into two days, the adult course being an extreme length, and an AMA Triple National, there was no doubt that this was going to be a long, but exciting weekend at Rausch Creek Trail Riders for the 9th Round of the PA State Hare Scramble Series and the 5th Round of the AMA National Hare Scramble Series. Saturday was the first day of the event, starting with the Pee Wee and Youth classes. All seemed to be going well until the youth race was underway; a rider took out an orange construction fence that was directing the course. With this marker down, a number of other racers followed. A total of 15 riders were led onto the extended adult course that ran in the opposite direction to the youth course. But with good communication and the persistence of the Rausch Creek staff, they were able to gather all lost riders and direct them back on course. As the racers were all back in position, the race continued, and Craig Delong came out on top with first in the Super Mini class and first overall for the Youth National. Sunday was a whole new day. The Rausch Creek course maintenance had an entirely new idea of a course in store for the adults. Their course differed from others by the length, difficulty, and variety of terrain. The course’s length of 23.8 miles was decided upon to give the riders more land and a less beaten up path to ensure for a smoother ride. Within these miles, riders were given different terrains and obstacles to go through, including flat, wide areas; hill climbs; tight

woods; a couple streams, and what Rausch Creek is known for, rocks. “Even though the course was tough, it was very well laid-out,” says Timmy Hunter, who placed 3rd in the 201-250cc A class. Fighting through and conquering all of the obstacles they were given, Michael Lafferty (Pro-Bikes) and Landon Wolfe (Open C 15+ Quad) took 1st place in their classes and 1st overall for the Bike and Quad National. With the two-day race weekend coming to an end, we can all say that it was a tough race, but an exciting one. The next national hare scramble race was held at High Mountain Dirt Riders July 31st and Aug. 1st.

District 7 Gold Cup Series Daytona 2010 By Wayne Sody Round 9 at Southfork Competition Park July 17-18, 2010 By Steve Carruthers The forecast for the weekend was hot and dry with scattered clouds with a chance of some great bar banging motocross racing. With the temperature in the mid-90s and not much relief in sight, practice started early Saturday morning. Practice ended at 1 p.m., and track prep started for the Quad races in the afternoon. When the track was groomed and watered, the quads roared to life with the Quad C class rolling off first, with Senior 40+ going on the second drop of the gate. In the C class, Frankie Wyant #69 grabbed the holeshot and held the lead for the win in the first moto. However, the second moto wasn’t as good for Frankie, ending his day with a DNF that left him with a 9th place overall for the day. Zach Gruden # 415 was the benefactor of Frankie’s day and he went 2-1 for 1st place overall. Jacob Ranani # 51 went 4-2 for second, and Davis Eaton # 118 went 3-3 for third on the day. Tony Capuano #11 got the holeshot in the 40+ class, but by lap two Scott Vanfossen #56 got around Tony and went on to win the first moto. David Elburn #991 went 3-1 for first on the day. Ed Puckett #8 went 2-2 on the day and finished second with Scott Vanfossen #56 rounding out the podium with a 1-3 for third overall. In the fifth race we saw the 90cc Production youth quads make their way around the track. In the first moto, Kittrell Eberwine #2 got the holeshot and held on for the win. Brett Benton #221 and Haeden Wilburn #3 gave chase but were to finish second and third,

respectfully. The top three were consistent, with the second moto being a carbon copy of the first. It wasn’t until fourth-place Brandon O’Neill #504 that we found anyone who improved on their first-place moto; Brandon went 5-4 for fourth on the day. R a c e number 6 was by far the best racing on the day, when the quad A class took to the track. When the gate dropped, all eight of the A riders left in a mighty roar. When the dust settled, Keith Hitchens #279 TONY CAPUANO #11, QUAD was up front, and JT Elliott #152 was all of the way in the back of the pack. Rider #158 Chris Hammett was the winner of the holeshot, but his day didn’t go as well as he had planned, and he finished with a 7-7 for seventh overall. Keith and JT are close in the points battle, and the separation on the track was looking good for Keith to improve his standing in the points. JT, on the other hand, wasn’t going to allow any points advantage to Keith and started working his way through the pack. Lap by lap, rider by rider, he dealt KEITH HITCHENS #279 with each as he AND JT ELLIOTT #152, QUAD A, BATTLE FOR THE came to them. By the time the HOLESHOT IN MOTO 2 checkered flag waved, JT had worked his way past Keith and into second place. When the gate dropped on the second moto, Keith was again in the front with the holeshot this time. JT, however, had a much better gate pick and was on Keith’s back wheels! The battle was on; they raced each other hard at every corner, one trying to get the advantage over the other. In the
FRANKIE WYANT #69, QUAD C
end, JT came away winning the battle, but Keith won the war. Keith is still the points leader at the end of the day, but JT is closing in and trying to take over as the series’ points lead. SENIOR JT finished the day with a 2-1 for first overall; David Terrell went 1-2 for second overall, with Keith finishing 3-3 for third overall. All of this close racing was allowed because the track was in great shape and plenty wide so riders could pass almost anywhere on the track. Sunday morning saw more of the same weather and the promise of more great racing. The track crew started work on the track early in the morning, and when practice started the track was watered and SKYLER THOMPSON #29, ready for the day. YOUTH QUAD 50CC 4-8 During practice, the dropped on the second track crew put out moto, Nick got out to the hay bales to force early lead, but this time the riders to make Mike didn’t let him pull multiple lines in out to a large lead. the time the riders were in the third corner Mike McDade #334 was on the ground! It wasn’t looking good for Mike; Nick was out front and starting to open up some daylight on the field. McDade got his bike started and pointed toward the front of the pack, and that is where he was headed. Much like the quad A class, rider by rider, corner by corner, Mike started working his way through the field. By the completion of the third lap, Mike was clear of the pack and headed for Nick. When he caught Nick, that battle was on, and for the next two laps they took turns trying to make the pass and blocking the pass. Coming to the white flag, Mike was able to make the pass on Nick, but Nick wasn’t going to let him get away. On the last lap Nick forced the mistake and managed to get back past Mike to take the win in the first moto. When the gate

Round 7 of 10 of the District 6 Ultimate MX Series was held in late July at the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club, right outside of Hanover, PA. The weekend’s event was sponsored by Kelsey Green’s Girls Just Wanna Ride Motocross School, and till day’s end Mother Nature would have her way, and the racing would end after the first round of motos. This, of course, didn’t cause many to leave, and a few actually took to the track without their rides just to get a firsthand look at the damage (see MXPTV.com for the full story). Just as the first set of motos was ending, the rains began to fall and the wind began to howl; within an hour the storm became torrential and all activity would halt for the day. The points were awarded on the first moto finishes only, and the day was in the books. Racing action saw many of the top amateur national contenders on hand, as this was the last race prior to Loretta’s. Names like Peters, Schmelyun, Spangler and Baxley were on hand to stay razor sharp prior to the largest amateur event of the year. All would fare well at the big show with the MDRA’s Sean Baxley bringing home a National Championship in the 450 C division. Other top finishers at Happy on this day would include both Troy Baer and Greg Pamart taking home two wins in the age classes, with Brandon Hartranft, Dominic Amilcare, Jordan Jarvis and Brandon Garlock all taking home multiple wins in the mini class divisions. Happy Ramblers’ next event will be held on Sept.11-12 and carries District 6 advancement points. To view complete images from today’s event, please check out www.jimbullphoto. com.

Sunday, July 25, at Tomahawk MX was a true test of each rider’s ability under opposite conditions, as the track went from dry and dusty during Moto 1 to wet and wild during Moto 2. First to hit the dirt in Moto 1 was the 60 A & B classes. 60 A Class, #726 Cameron Dowell crossed the finish first, followed by #449 Kyle Henderson and #259 Walter Benitez, but during Moto 2’s wet and wild conditions, it was #259 Walter Benitez finishing first, followed by #726 Cameron Dowell and #449 Kyle Henderson. Overall finishes: First - #726 Cameron Dowell; Second - #259 Walter Benitez; Third - #449 Kyle Henderson. Overall finishes: First - #51 Kobe White; Second - # 5Michael Stewart; Third - #125 Cody Groves. President’s Corner September D7 President’s Corner As we go into the second part of the year, please donCHANGE. Change is inevitable. When I started racing in District 7 in 1973 there was no “C” class. In 1974 the first District 7 “C” class was established. Motorcycles had 6” front suspension and 4” in the rear. Now we have 12” at both ends. Everyone rode two-stroke motorcycles; now we all ride four-stroke motorcycles. The kids on 65cc and 85cc are still two-strokes, but the four-strokes are coming and, in my opinion, will be accepted and approved soon. We used to advance the top five riders in every class at the end of the year to the next highest level. Now we have the AMA’s RPV points system for advancement. All races used to count for year-end awards, and now we have a series to determine our yearly champions. Change is always happening; it is for the good. We sometimes resist change because we don’t understand why we need change. Education is the key to understanding why change does and should occur. Next year there is a very likely scenario that change will occur for motocross in District 7. The promoters need change. They are currently working on a proposal that will benefit them and you, the racers. There will be more promotions, less distance travelled, and a compact series that will benefit all of the riders. Change is good. The District could possibly lose the motocross discipline but will be financially and totally committed to all of the other disciplines that fall under District 7. This proposal is still in the elementary developmental stages but is the future of District 7. The District was established in 1967. As president, I have 44 years
Mama Members,
of heritage to protect and fulfill. District 7 remains strong and determined to seek other avenues to remain one of the AMA’s elite districts. On a more social note, DELMARVA Bike Week is coming up Sept. 16-20 in Ocean City, Maryland. Each year it is a pleasure to see all of the motocrossers, dirt trackers, hare scramblers and dual sporters who own street bikes converge on Ocean City. Wednesday night starts with a bike show at Smitty McGees on Route 54 in Fenwick Island, Delaware. Thursday and Friday nights are rendezvous nights at Fish Tales, Seacrets and other Ocean City hot spots. On Saturday, there is a bike show at Sunset Grille in West Ocean City. The center-stage show is in Salisbury Thursday through Sunday. I hope to see some of you down there this year. It’s a great social gathering away from the track. Remember, keep your feet on the pegs, go fast, and take chances. Wayne Sody
By the time this letter is published, school will have started, and we will be entering the latter part of the race season. This has been a season of great racing with some interesting weather mixed in. We have set our last race for Oct. 23 and 24 at Tomahawk, which has proven to be a great track. Don’t forget we will also have fun with trick-or-treating and parents’ race. Our end-of-year banquet is coming up, so please be working on your picture page for the banquet book. The banquet this year is Dec. 4 at the BWI Marriott and, as in the past, is a time to have fun, receive some great awards and spend time with friends
and family. I wish you all the best of luck in your racing and look forward to the completion of a great 2010 season. Don Logan President MAMA

District 7 Gold Cup Series Evansville MX Park Berwick, PA - August 1, 2010 By Jamie Brown www.awesomephotos.com The D7 Gold Cup Series race was held at Evansville MX Park, Berwick, PA, Aug. 1, 2010. Riders came from all over the East Coast, north and south as well. The weather, on the other hand, was not very cooperative at first. Temperatures to start the morning off were in the low to mid-60s with plenty of moisture in the air and in the clouds. Track conditions with all the rain that we had overnight were not that great for the morning practice, but when the clouds broke, the track came together for the main event to see the racing action. Pagoda Motorcycle Club Mainline Series August 1, 2010 Birdsboro, PA, home to the Pagoda Motorcycle Club, played host to Round # 7 of 8 for 2010 Mainline Series. The Mainline Series consists of eight rounds split four each between Pagoda MC and Sleepy Hollow MX. The series is sponsored by local motorcycle businesses and carries its own point series, with champions being crowned in midSeptember at their banquet held right on the Pagoda clubhouse grounds. Today’s event brought a good crowd to Pagoda under sketchy skies and was sponsored by Greg Pamart and the GPMX Motocross School. The day started off overcast with excellent track conditions. The first motos went off without a hitch, but like the weekend before at Happy Ramblers, Mother Nature would have her way, and the rains would come. Pagoda did elect to run their second set on this weekend, and the racers did their best to get through the soggy end to the day. NJ native Dakota Kessler would have his way in the expert divisions, with Pagoda club member Ritchie Kastle showing the amateur guys around the track; both would win both of their divisions this day. Likewise in the novice division, Shane Martin of Willow Street, PA, would take both 250 and Open C, and Pagoda regular Barry Carsten would win the Vet and Senior A divisions. In mini racing action, the Shahan boys from New Castle, Del., would go 1 – 2 in Supermini, and young Dominic Amilcare would grab two top spots in the 50cc racing divisions. As always, Pagoda hosted the younger racers on their exclusive mini track. Here, riders on the smaller machines get a chance to compete in a much more controlled environment. The racing is fun and safe, and there are classes for most mini bikes and mini racers. If you know a friend who is thinking about getting their child started in our great sport, please introduce them to Pagoda’s Mini Track.

MDRA Round 10/ Mainline Round 8 Sleepy Hollow - Sept. 8, 2010 By Jim Mucklin - www.jimmucklinphotography.com it’s easy to see why these guys have A plates. Chad Aughinbaugh continues his (1-1) wins in the 25 plus, Mike Futer takes second with a (3-2) and Jordan Baldridge takes third with a (2-3). Mike Bear always has a good day, and today was no different, as he takes the overall in 30A and 35A. I was happy to see the 121 Suz cross the line twice in first to take the overall in 35 plus B/C, making for a really good day for Troy Baer. And let’s not forget our ladies. It was close, but
HAVING A GOOD DAY Having a good day is when you’re doing something you like, and quite a few riders had a good day today. Starting off in the 50s, Dominic Amilcare aboard the mighty #2 Cobra takes a (1-1) in the 4-6 and a (11) in the oil. Lots of fast bikes in this group. Chase Yentzer with a (1-1) in the open with our very own Jordan Jarvis just back from Loretta Lynn’s takes a second with a (2-2). Once these two get out front, it’s hard to get around them. Nice job! Brandon the “G-Man” Garlock with a couple of overalls, 85B, Junior Mini and the Super Mini. On fire and Chase Yentzer takes the 50 Open. gone, Rivera with a couple of Page out in practice on a 450 good starts and Weindel with some big charges just couldn’t catch him. If comes to the gate sportin’ an any 50 riders want to learn something, watch A plate. Way to go. Twelve “G-man” load up the rear suspension before bikes, but when it was over a jump. In the 85(9-11) it was Terry, Leitzel, Dan Holton takes overall with a (3-2), Bill Bleich (2-3) second, Keck, one two and three. Cristhian Pinto wasn’t having too bad a followed by Dan Corbin with day. With some great holeshots, he takes a (1-4). When you see finishes the overall in SB 2 stroke and the 250C. I like that, you know it’s good;
Taylor Stevey takes the Women’s overall.
Troy Baer wins the 35B.
Taylor Stevey has stepped it up, seven girls who are serious about winning. Taylor takes overall with a (2-1), Alexa West second with a (1-2) and Shayla Stephens with a (3-3) takes third. And that’s the way I saw it. 8_8_SLEEPY HOLLOW RESULTS 50 (4-6): 1) Amilcare 2) Stephens 3) Kauffman 4) Bader

almost missed Ryan Clites ( I didn’t hear girls screaming), but a man on a mission takes the overall in SB 4 stroke and the overall in 250B. If you finish in front to Conner, Good and Kastle, you’re having a very good day. Twenty-seven on the gate and some serious bikes made for some great racing. Open B, look out it was all #33 and #12, Good and Sparks with first and second. Thanks for the show! There were some long faces when Broc showed up at a straight through drive from Loretta’s; that’s dedication. I drive for a living, but after 10 hours you’re shot, nap time, call me in the morning. Where he found it, I don’t know, but he takes the overall in CB and the 250A. He said he pulled in as the open A was taking off; he missed the first, but took first in the second moto. Open A: Man I try to keep up, Kameron
