COURSES AVAILABLE 2015 to prepare you for university, apprenticeships and work

TAKING YOU TO THE NEXT LEVEL LEARN|ENRICH|PROGRESS

FOREWORD Making the move into Sixth Form is an incredibly exciting time. This booklet gives you an overview of all the courses we are offering for 2015. It is essential that you choose the right courses for you, so please take the time to read about and further investigate the courses in which you are interested. We also advise you to read this in conjunction with our Wellsway Pathways Guidance information booklet. This gives you further information about possible choices and pathways to help you achieve your ambitions and make the right choices for next year. Much is changing for Sixth Forms all around the country over the next few years. From 2015 some courses are changing to a linear structure, where either all or a minimum of 80% of the marks are awarded in examinations at the end of the course. For other courses this is happening in 2016 or even 2017. In this booklet we have indicated that a course is changing in this manner by simply calling the subjects ‘linear’ on the relevant page – this is happening in English Language, English Literature, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Psychology, Art and Design, Business, Economics, Computer Science and Sociology for 2015. If your course is not on this list, it is not changing from its current format. At the time of print some of the specifications are still in draft form awaiting final approval from Ofqual and so we have given you the most up to date information there is. Of course change also brings opportunity, and we have added exciting new courses for next year that offer even more depth and provide clearer pathways for students. We hope you find this booklet useful, but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

Mr Barry Bray Director of Sixth Form

THERE IS AN OVERALL ENTRY REQUIREMENT OF 4 OR MORE GCSES AT A* – C TO JOIN WELLSWAY SIXTH FORM INCLUDING EITHER ENGLISH OR MATHS. We offer an exciting and extensive range of courses to prepare you for university or work. NEW COURSES FOR 2015

AS-LEVEL CORE MATHS

LEVEL 2 CERTIFICATE IN FITNESS INSTRUCTION

Core Maths will be distinct from A-level Maths. Its main purpose is to prepare you for higher level study with a significant mathematical focus, such as Engineering, Economics and the Sciences, or in areas where mathematical knowledge and its application are nonetheless important such as in Geography, Business and the Social Sciences. Of course, it may be that you just want to keep studying Maths to complement your other A-levels.

We are extending our opportunities for those interested in sport, and are tailoring our offer to suit your needs. In addition to A-level PE, Level 3 BTEC Sport and Level 2 Sports Leaders Award we are looking to roll out a programme over the next 2 years that provide extended opportunities.

Core Maths content will focus on: The application of mathematical knowledge to address problems and questions; Representing situations mathematically, and Use of mathematical and statistical knowledge to make logical and reasoned arguments in a variety of contexts. The Core Maths qualification will fit alongside your main 16-18 programme and is designed to be taken over two years, in addition to the minimum 3 A-levels or equivalent Wellsway expects. This is a brand new qualification. It is expected to be equivalent to an AS level and at least 80% of the final grade is expected to be based on external examinations. Entry guidelines GCSE Maths grade C or above, for those who do not progress onto A-level Maths.

This year the Certificate in Fitness Instruction is a unique opportunity for any student with an interest in personal fitness to undertake a Level 2 course (GCSE equivalent) designed to either simply expand your knowledge and experience in this area or, of course, lead you to a career in the sector. Successful completion could lead to students embarking on the Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training in Year 2. Like the Level 2 Sports Leadership Award that we currently offer, this is a 1 year course that will fit alongside your main 16-18 programme, in addition to the minimum 3 A-levels or equivalent Wellsway expects you to take. In addition to this we are looking to offer Level 1 coaching qualifications specialising in different sports throughout the year.

A-LEVEL COMPUTER SCIENCE Computer Science is a practical subject where learners can apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real world systems.

A-LEVEL FOOD TECHNOLOGY If you enjoy designing and preparing high quality dishes and interested in developing your knowledge, understanding and application for designing food products then this is the course for you. Food Technology seeks to your abilities to produce food products that are fit for purpose, satisfy wants or needs and enhance our day-to-day lives. This course gives you the opportunity to demonstrate your design and technology capability whilst developing skills in planning, research, analysis, product development, project planning and evaluation. Food technology also focuses on key areas such as quality and processing of food, packaging and labelling and nutrition. A-level Food Technology is a good introduction into the vast and varied career opportunities within the food industry and opportunities for progression to many degree level courses such as Food Science, Food and Consumer Science, Health Nutrition and Lifestyle, Human Nutrition, Exercise Nutrition and Health. The coursework portfolio of skills makes up 60% of the course, and the external exam is 40% Entry Guidelines GCSE Science grade B, or a food related GCSE at grade C. Students with a grade C in Science will be considered on an individual basis.

LEVEL 3 - BTEC APPLIED SCIENCE For anyone who sees their future career in science Applied Science is an excellent starting point. It covers a wide range of topics across Biology, Chemistry and Physics and will allow you to acquire a high level of practical laboratory skills from which the theory is then drawn. This course is very practical with plenty of opportunities to implement the theory that you learn. There are no external exams as it is coursework based, which means that you have a very clear understanding of your progress throughout the course, to help you plan and achieve your next steps. Taught by subject specialists, with laboratory experience, you will learn by completing laboratorybased practical assignments, supported self-study assignments, presentations and discussions that are based on real workplace situations, activities and demands. Entry Guidelines GCSE Science grade C or above.

It is less based on ICT and more on computer programming and algorithms, mathematical skills used to express computational laws and processes, and problem solving using computers. It is a natural successor to GCSE Computing, although there is no requirement to have done GCSE Computing to be able to take this course. Computer Science will above all else be relevant to the modern and changing world of computing; it has an open source ethos allowing multiple programming languages that meet the needs of the course to be used. It is an intensely creative subject that combines invention and excitement. It values computational thinking, helping you to develop the skills to solve problems, write programs, design systems, understand the power and limits of human and machine intelligence and create your own project in Year 2. A-level Computer Science is made up of 80% written assessment at the end of the course, and 20% on a project. Entry guidelines GCSE Maths at grade B or above. GCSE Computing at grade B or above (if taken).
