Round 3 in Term 3 ‘The Apprentice’ Challenge

Snippets of news……

The recent Physics trip to the Centre of European Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland was a fantastic experience. We enjoyed an interesting talk and tour of the centre for the ATLAS particle detector, as well as a visit to the CERN Globe of science and innovation. During our visit, we took a cable car up to the summit of snow-capped Mont Saleve, with views through the mist across Geneva and Lac Leman. We also enjoyed a tour of the Palais de Nations UN building, as well as visiting a number of Geneva’s amazing museums and the spectacular Jet d’Eau fountain from across the lake.

As a result of their success at the County Netball Tournament the Senior Netball team are now representing the County at the Regional round of the National Schools Tournament which takes place at Marlborough College on Saturday 28th January. They will be up against the 2 best teams from each of the counties in the SW with the top 2 teams qualifying for the National Finals in March. The girls are training hard ahead of the tournament and had a very challenging match on Monday evening against King Edward's School in Bath who are the other team representing Avon. Our thanks go to local company, Drybuild who have sponsored the team and provided them with a full set of playing kit. We are hugely appreciative of their support.

Congratulations on their success so far and we wish every success to the squad ahead of the Regionals on the 28th: Jazz (captain), Freya, Emily, Sophie, Millie, Georgie, Erin, Amy, and Lucy

At the end of November a team of handpicked Economists took part in the regional heats of the Bank of England “Target 2.0” competition at the Avon Gorge Hotel. The team had to make a presentation to a panel of experts which set out their view on current economic conditions and future prospects culminating in a policy recommendation aimed at meeting the inflation target of 2.0%. Quite a daunting prospect but the team performed very well under pressure and confidently answered some very difficult questions.

Whilst they didn’t go through to the national finals it was a great learning experience. Well done to Aleena, Ollie, Leo and Callum.

Wellsway Sixth Form students are serving as wonderful ambassadors and performers for the Sixth Form in the central roles that they are playing in this year’s school production of ‘We Will Rock You’. One of the great things about the production is the relationships that are formed across the Year groups from Year 7- 13, and this year is a great example of this.

Year 12 and 13, alongside playing key roles in the production itself, have been great sources of support and guidance for the younger years - the leadership our sixth form students have been displaying is an absolute credit to them and a valuable asset for us as staff.

Performances are from Wednesday 1st – Saturday 4th February.

Year 13 – Fine Art Year 13 Fine Art student, Emma has been working hard on her portfolio… Emma has applied to Oxford Brookes, Edinburgh and Sheffield Universities (among others), to study BA (Hons) Degree in Landscape Architecture or Urban Design. She has already received Portfolio requests and has interviews coming up later this month… Good luck Emma!

Emma has been exploring landscape in her Fine Art course through the theme of history and the impact of past wars on people and landscape. NOTE: To study Architecture or Landscape Architecture at degree level Universities’ require an Art & Design A Level qualification.

Year 12 - Photography Year 12 Photography students recently completed a project inspired by the famous fashion Photographer, John Rankin’s ‘Rankin Destroy Project’. Students planned a self portrait photoshoot. Inspired by Rankin’s famous celebrity project, they then went on to ‘destroy’ their portraits both digitally and practically to represent an aspect of their personality, or a subject they feel passionately about. Left: Rankin and Goldie’s (actor, musician Graffiti artist) joint portrait

Right: Rankin and Kylie’s joint ‘Destroy portrait’
