On 18th March 2016, eight of our highly talented sixth form students took part in a production of ‘Blackout’ by Davey Anderson. They performed at the Bristol Old Vic as part of the National Theatre Connections festival. The students were all part of the process of creating dynamic and exciting physical theatre and ensemble movements for the piece. The day involved a tech and dress rehearsal at the theatre, culminating in an evening performance. Our students excelled at the challenge and creativity that the project allowed and it is hoped that we will take part in this festival again in the near future. It has also meant that Wellsway drama department now has strong links with the Bristol Old Vic and hope this continues. The company were commended for their professionalism and both the Bristol Old Vic and National Theatre director were excited and moved by our performance. The memories that these young people have created through this experience will stay with them long after they leave Wellsway.

We travelled to Devon to compete against Truro School, West Buckland School and Kelly College’ with hockey played to the highest standard by the boys. Players’ player of the tournament – Captain Leo Nolan & goalkeeper Joe Fletcher.

Plate Champions for the third year running! On Thursday 10th March, the senior rugby team travelled to Sexey's School, Bruton, for their annual Rugby 7's Tournament, having won the Plate competition for the previous two years. The first group game was against Wells Cathedral School and Wellsway did not start well, gifting the opposition two tries, before George Warren scored a try and conversion. The second half saw a much improved Wellsway side increasing their score through tries from Dan Gregory (2) and Adam Stokes (2) with Fin Davies adding two conversions. Final score Wellsway 35-12 Wells Cathedral School. The second game saw Wellsway play against Sherborne, where Wellsway lead 127 at half time and finished 19-14 winners. Tries scored by Dan Gregory (2) and James Withey, with two conversions from Fin Davies. The third game was a much tougher game, which saw Wellsway trailing 0-5 at half time, Wellsway scored a try of their own in the second half, before Claysmore added two converted tries to win the game 5-19.

Next up for Wellsway were the hosts, Sexey's school, in a game which would decide which trophy Wellsway would be competing for. Wellsway were well into their stride and won the game 33-14, with tries from Dan Gregory, Oakley Goodland, Fin Davies (2) and Ciaran O'Connor with conversions from Fin Davies (2) and Ciaran O'Connor (2). The final group game was against the previous years Cup winners, Marlborough College, who ran out 0-68 winners (and also won the Cup competition overall).

Wellsway finished third in their group, so were drawn to play against Gordano in the Plate competition (second tier). Feeling the need to redeem themselves, Wellsway put in a fantastic performance and completely controlled the game from the start, winning 26-0 and securing a place in the final. Tries scored by George Warren, Fin Davies, Oakley Goodland, Harry Maynard and Ciaran O'Connor, with conversions added by Ciaran O'Connor (2) and Fin Davies. The Plate Final saw Wellsway play against the hosts for a second time, and this time, an even better performance. Wellsway scored two quick tries, only to gift the opposition an interception try. This only served to fuel Wellsway's desire to win and four further tries were added to the score line. Final score Wellsway 38-7 Sexey's School. Tries from George Warren, Dan Gregory, Ciaran O'Connor, Harry Maynard, Fin Davies (2) and conversions from Josh Graham and Fin Davies (2). The whole team played exceptionally, which meant choosing the player of the tournament was difficult as a number of players deserved it! This award goes to Ciaran O'Connor who had an excellent tournament, playing in a number of positions, even swapping between the forwards and backs, whilst adding three tries and four conversions. The senior rugby team displayed an excellent work ethic and attitude throughout the tournament and managed to win the Plate for the third time in as many years. The players gave their all throughout the day and should be very proud of their performance! Well done boys!! Head Boy Dan accepting the Plate trophy!

As part of the well-being strand of our student development programme students had a blast learning this ancient Celtic dance.

It was a delight to welcome the magnificent choir from Mountain View High School, San Francisco, for a joint concert with our own whole school choir. It was an amazing, life affirming event with music of the very highest quality from everyone and with some great contacts being made.

We also had our very first Open Mic night in March. Hosted by and featuring our very own Nic and Harry, this was an opportunity for anyone to stand up and perform.

Wellsway Sixth Berlin trip 2016

God and The Big Bang During Term 4, Y12 Philosophy & Ethics students participated in 2 events: a visit from a member of the Philosophy Department at UWE and a conference at Bristol Cathedral. During the visit from UWE, students experienced a university style lecture on the Cosmological Argument and were able to ask questions about studying Philosophy and Ethics at university and potential career pathways. Students also completed a range of revision activities for their upcoming Philosophy and Ethics exams. (Left) Ellie participates in an illusion with a scientist (and magician) in the Cathedral. (Right) Laura and Ellie re-create the effects of carbon dioxide on the oceans, with the help of an Oceanographer from Plymouth.

Philosophy & Ethics students had the opportunity to join other Bristol schools at the Cathedral for their first ‘God and The Big Bang’ conference. Throughout the day, students attended 3 different workshops exploring the relationship between religion and science; including a Physicist, a magician and an oceanographer.

Two teams of Wellsway Sixth Form Business & Economics students competing against 18 other teams from Bristol and beyond in the South West regional heat of the Institute of Chartered Accountants for England & Wales ‘Base’ competition at the University of the West of England in March.

The two teams were made up of 12 year 12 students studying Economics, Business Studies or Applied Business at A level. They worked with accountants from a variety of local firms including Deloitte, KPMG and Ernst & Young, analysing data and developing a future strategy for a shoe manufacturer. The information was based on a case study given in the professional exams taken by Chartered Accountants and gave students first hand experience of what it’s like to sit an Accountancy exam, and what an accountant does when they advise business. The teams cam e up with some creative solutions, produced excellent presentations and faced questions from a panel of business experts. They narrowly missed going through to the national final in June. The visit also gave students the chance to discuss future routes into Accountancy and talk to apprentices, school leavers and graduates each following a different path towards working in accounting, finding out just what life is like working in one of Bristol’s biggest employers and wealthiest industries and provided some very useful contacts and great work experience opportunities lined up for the future.

On 15th March we took all our Year 12 students to this annual event. It gave students the opportunity to talk directly to Universities, employers and apprenticeship providers themselves and get the inside track on life and study there.

We also has the opportunity to have a look at a reconstructed student apartment and attend seminars on student life, Oxbridge and alternatives to HE after Sixth Form study (oh, and bag lots of freebies!).
