Biology/Geography Field Trip July saw the annual Biology/Geography field trip, with record numbers crammed onto a 50-seater coach! The weather was superb as we studied the fore dunes at Berrow local nature reserve, covered in stabilising marram grass, competing with the invasive sea buckthorn. A short walk took us to the rabbit-grazed dune pasture, with a much higher diversity of lime-loving plants, including bird's foot trefoil, eyebright, restharrow, lady's bedstraw and pyramidal orchids. After lunch in the beachside cafĂŠ, we tackled the rocky shore in Weston-Super-Mare, near the old Birnbeck pier. Here, we studied zonation and students were able to measure and record the changes from lichens to channelled wrack, to spiral, bladder, egg & serrated wrack, as we moved from upper to lower shore. We found a number of animals, including periwinkles, barnacles, limpets, and a pair of shore crabs locked in a love embrace (a first for Mr Sage!). After a well-earned coffee / cake / ice cream in the local cafĂŠ, it was back on the coach; another highly successful trip safely completed!

Music

Fundraising for our show, We Will Rock You, continues to take place thanks in part to sixth formers who helped bag pack in M&S at Cribbs Causeway in September. We’re delighted to have so many sixth formers in the cast, band, and also helping on the marketing team.

Composition workshop We’re delighted that our A2 Music students have been offered the opportunity to take part in a composition workshop, organised by New Music in the South West, with musicians playing their composition, followed by feedback from composition. It will be exciting to hear compositions played on real instruments! Singing for all… It’s fantastic to have two choirs run by sixth formers. Alice Godwin and Georgina Jenkins have set up a highly popular Year 7 Girls Choir whilst Rob Collard has set up a Year 7 Boys Choir. There are also plans for sixth formers to organise a Brass Ensemble and String Ensemble. Fantastic for UCAS applications! No ticket? No entry! Serious business at Wellsway’s Got Talent!

Rehearsals are well under way for this year’ School Production of ‘We Will Rock You’. Over 100 students in cast and band, led by our gifted Year 12 and 13 students are rehearsing hard to create this amazing spectacle. After a short break we want to come back with a bang and have great plans for an incredible show- the quality and commitment of this year’s cast promises much. Performances run on 1st - 4th February where you will witness Mendip Hall transformed into two contrasting worlds.

PE Term 6 event in PE – Mixed Sixth Form Rounders' Tournament The mixed rounders' tournament was a lovely way for the sixth form to enjoy a competitive but friendly sporting event at the end of the year. For the Y13’s about to leave it is the last possible chance to represent the school in sport and this wonderful group of students enjoyed it wholeheartedly. There was a lovely spirit, games were indeed played competitively but there was also a lot of laughter and fun to be had. It was a pleasure to accompany the group and although we lost a game to the eventual winners Chew, Wellsway finished in second place with their heads held high and smiles on their faces.

Well done and thank you to Emily, Kelsey, Elise , Callum, Oakley, Fin, Sami, George, Abi D, Abi H, Beth, Leah, and Ciaran.

Wellsway's 1st XI cricket Wellsway's 1st XI cricket team played several games last summer. The highlights included a tour to West Sussex including games against Christ's Hospital School near Horsham and Worth School. In July we played games against the Forty Club (whose President is HRH Prince Philip) and the MCC, the most prestigious and oldest cricket club in the world. Both the Forty Club and the MCC play matches against all the best schools in the country and Wellsway is one of the very few state schools that plays them. As such, Wellsway was particularly honoured to have been named as the West of England Forty Club Trophy winners for the best performance in the west against their club during 2016.
