Housing market recovery ‘imminent’ Building approvals, finance commitments both up, reports CARMELLE WILKINSON THE Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) WA says today’s ABS Housing Finance figures are further evidence of an imminent property market recovery. The ABS figures show actual housing finance commitments in WA were up 11.6 per cent in November 2010 compared with October. “This lift in financing commitments is on top of recent news that Building Approvals increased in WA for the third consecutive month in November 2010,” UDIA CEO Debra Goostrey said.

“With financing and approvals starting to show positive signs after the downturn earlier in 2010 we are confident that 2011 is the start of a better year for property. “While there are still plenty of established homes on the market, the land market has remained steady throughout the year and there really are some good deals out there for people considering purchasing,” Ms Goostrey said:“It’s the age old saying, but if you are thinking about buying – now is a good time”. ■

Work is a labour of love in such an area It beats working in an office, and allows Tim Schifferli time for an active lifestyle THE key to Davey Real Estate Scarborough sales consultant Tim Schifferli’s success might be that he doesn’t just work hard in the areas he sells in; he lives and plays hard there, too. Specialising in Woodlands, real estate comes naturally to Mr Schifferli, who lived in the area for eight years before recently relocating to be closer to the beach – a necessity given his active lifestyle and involvement in several coastbased clubs, including being a member of Scarborough Surf Life Saving Club and president of Newman Churchlands Swimming Club. Given his prolific dedication to extra-curricular activities and being a married father of three, a work-life-family balance is all-important for Mr Schifferli. Luckily, he does not find it difficult to muster enthusiasm for his job. Indeed, it is a labour of love. “I love it, I enjoy it and I think I’m good at it. Davey is a really great place to work. My boss Rob Mason tapped me on the shoulder a few years ago and said ‘come and work for me’ and I jumped at the chance. I fit there,” he said. “I work in Woodlands predominantly and it’s a wonderful place to work and live. My wife and I raised our children there.” Living nearby in Scarborough allows Mr Schifferli to get in a morning swim at the beach before work every day

Davey Real Estate’s Tim Schifferli.

and is one of the many advantages of working in real estate. “I love the flexibility and meeting people every day, making new connections,” he said. “You make a lot of friends, and it beats working in an office. Most importantly, it allows me a good family-work balance. I work hard but do get plenty of time to myself and for my family, and being with my kids and getting my swim in is very important.” There is a challenging side to his job that Mr Schifferli said requires more than just knowledge of an area. “You need patience and empathy with your clients,” he said. “You have to be honest too and do what you say you’re going to do. When you’re given the job of looking after someone’s home, their biggest asset, you have to give one hundred per cent and ensure that all parties are happy with the deal.” ■

Look out over an aquatic wonderland Watch whales, dolphins and seals swim by from the many rooms with ocean views. By COURTNEY NOTTE NOT many people have the luxury of being able to whale watch from their living room, but the owner of this luxurious tri-level residence can. Watching dolphins and seals pass by is just one of many advantages that comes with this beachfront property, but it is the owners’ favourite. “Just the other day, I was watching penguins sit around on the sand and dolphins came through this morning. They pass through here every morning,” owner Carol said. “Not long ago, a whale came right into the bay with her calf and put on a show for us, blowing water everywhere.” It’s hard not to enjoy the endless water view, captured beautifully by the position of the home on the block and the circular layout of the rooms. Whether it is a panoramic beach vista or an outlook over the Feng Shui inspired alfresco area at the back, there is a view from every room – a necessity as far as owner Carol, a New Zealand native, is concerned.

“I moved here from a house that sat right on the edge of a cliff – there was nothing in front of it,” she said. “When I moved to Perth, I looked everywhere for a house, but I didn’t want to live anywhere with a road in front of me. This place was perfect. It’s just the beach and the breeze.” The design of the house, which was built by Webb & Brown-Neaves seven years ago in sought-after Clarecastle Retreat, facilitates a flow between the indoor and outdoor living areas. The open-plan living zone on the first floor and a retreat on the second floor are by far the most impressive spaces, with floor-toceiling windows that afford

an uninterrupted view. Balconies connect to both of these areas. The house comprises four bedrooms, including the master suite with ocean and marina entrance views, three bathrooms and a powder room, and four living areas, including an upstairs retreat and home office, open-plan family, games and lounge area, two separate meals areas, and a spacious central kitchen. Features include zoned reverse-cycle ducted airconditioning, liquid limestone paving to the front and rear outdoor areas, alfresco area under the main roof overlooking established gardens with several water features, and a double garage with direct access to the house. ■

Maintain the rage with proven formula Building their fourth home, the owners knew exactly what they wanted with this stunner, writes COURTNEY NOTTE OWNERS Rebecca and James Bentley are loathe to leave their meticulously crafted home, but think their friends might be even sadder at their departure from what has been dubbed ‘the party house’. It is easy to see why, with seamlessly integrated indoor-outdoor living areas, perfectly spaced living zones and a north-facing alfresco area built for entertaining. After building three houses and undertaking several renovation projects, the Bentleys knew exactly what they wanted in a home. They set about building this one to achieve the perfect house to move their five children into. Mrs Bentley said they made a range of modifications to the original plans, including rotating its position on the 624sqm block to maximise space inside and out. “We basically turned it around 180 degrees and pushed it right back into the corner of the lot so that we have this big space for the (12m) lap pool, covered alfresco and lawn area. “It’s really rare to have a space like this in Iluka, with a pool and a deck and a grassed area and a balcony overlooking all of it, plus the courtyard off the master bedroom.” Several sets of stacking glass doors open to this alfresco area from the open-plan kitchen, family room and meals area. Mrs Bentley said hosting parties in this immaculately presented space was a dream. “When you entertain you can have people everywhere – outside and in – and still feel like everyone is together and mingling,” she said. “And having the laundry off the kitchen was a very deliberate move by me. You can make a mess and hide it all away in the laundry so guests never see it.” Built three years ago, the house is a minimalist haven, with Kempas floorboards on the ground floor, from the wide entry vestibule to the living areas at the back. Mrs Bentley said she enjoyed spending mornings sitting outside in the large private courtyard that connects to the master bedroom. Other features of the home include Corrian bench tops in the kitchen, ducted evaporative airconditioning, a security system, smart wiring and reticulated, easy care gardens. ■

Hidden gem sets a stylish pace This surprising Wanneroo home, with its exceptional water feature, has style and originality, writes COURTNEY NOTTE HOUSES of this calibre are a rare find, so it is especially surprising to find this commanding residence hidden away in a pocket of Wanneroo. Looking at the high, rendered perimeter fence that completely blocks the home from view, you would never guess the residence was possessed of such style and originality. A combination of external materials such as limestone, glass and timber have been used to great effect to create a façade that is at once modern and classical. A limestone portico with a cedar-lined ceiling is a welcoming feature, but the most interesting is the water feature. Follow the narrow strip of water from the gated entry to the courtyard to the opposite side of the garden, where it opens into a gas heated splash pool. Attention to detail such as a glass safety fence between the water and the elevated portico make it clear that function takes precedence but form has not been sacrificed. A cabana-style covered entertaining area is on the lower level of the split-level yard, surrounded by brick paved pathways that wind between the lush tropical gardens with

mature palm trees. Several sets of glazed glass doors open to the entry foyer and the master bedroom from the front. The lavish ensuite is reminiscent of a luxury hotel, with twin baths, an open double shower and dual vanity. Space and privacy for a family is guaranteed, with good separation between the bedrooms. Each minor bedroom has access to an outdoor area and one connects to its own bathroom. Polished blackbutt flooring extends from the living room at the front, to each of the bedrooms and into several living areas, with the exception of the tiled kitchen and the carpeted sunken theatre room. Purposebuilt, the room has a platform with blackbutt flooring for a pool table and doors to a rear courtyard with fragrant frangipani trees and clipped hedges in elevated garden beds. A strip of LED lights adds flair to the hallway outside the theatre room and in the kitchen. A corrugated feature in the kitchen complements the stainless steel appliances and drawers, and wood-panelled cupboards. ■

Renovated with the now factor You would never guess the original home was built in the 80s, writes COURTNEY NOTTE THE previous owner of this home would not recognise it if they saw it today, so impressive is the scope of the renovations and extensions carried out by current owners Brad and Maureen Gillard. The couple completed most of the work themselves, including the extension of the front bedrooms and the addition of the second storey. Now, the home is like new and has dimensions that suit a large family. You would never guess from the rendered facade or the modern and stylishly appointed interior that the original single-storey dwelling was built in the late 80s. The additions and renovations were completed in 2003. “We added the second storey to capitalise on the ocean view,” Mrs Gillard said. “It was a big project and it took a fair while, but now you can see right down to Kwinana and all along the coast.” Like the best coastal homes, it is bright and breezy, with many large

windows and a light, crisp colour scheme throughout. Space abounds, from the wide entry foyer through french doors to the combined formal lounge and dining room ahead. Sliding doors connect this area, and the open-plan living zone next to it to the rear alfresco area, where bold burnt orange retaining walls house an array of colourful shrubs and trees. The gardens surround a pool with a rock waterfall feature at one end. Enjoy an outlook over all of this from the gabled patio. Privacy for parents and children is guaranteed thanks to the wellspaced bedrooms. The minor bedrooms are on the ground floor, convenient to a shared bathroom, while the master suite and connecting bathroom are upstairs, next to a carpeted retreat or living area. Come up here to take in the ocean views from the adjoining balcony, with a timber-lined ceiling. ■

Classic design, modern convenience guarantees the best of both worlds With plenty of room, this home is ideal for relaxing and entertaining. By COURTNEY NOTTE THIS Webb & Brown-Neaves home in the Connolly Golf Course estate seems to have been built for entertaining and relaxing with the family. Cedar-lined ceilings are a feature of a balcony to the first floor and a patio at the back, which overlooks a sunken open-air alfresco area. To ensure a low-maintenance outdoor area, the limestoneretained garden beds are limited to some trees and shrubs along the fence. A host of benefits come with

the home, including its position in a cul-de-sac near the Joondalup Country Club golf course, as do a range of features such as ducted evaporative and reverse-cycle airconditioning units, a ducted vacuum system, security system and double garage with roller-door access to the back yard. The living areas and spacious bedrooms are the real treat, from the entry foyer with polished jarrah floorboards and formal living areas with a fireplace, to a bedroom with private balcony access. The home blends classic decor

with modern convenience, for the best of both worlds and has living areas on both levels. Jarrah balustrading to the wide staircase adds old-world charm. Outside the theatre room on the first floor landing is a kitchenette. It is also convenient to the bedrooms on this level, one of which is an alternative master suite and has its own bathroom. These rooms connect to the balcony with a view to the golf course; the bedroom via sliding doors and the theatre through doors with bi-fold plantation

shutters. Also on this level are two minor bedrooms separated by a semi-ensuite. Included with the sale of the home is the custom-built jarrah entertainment unit, and integrated television and sound system. The ground floor comprises a study off the entry, and open-plan kitchen, meals area and family zone, with sliding doors to the alfresco area. A two-way ensuite connects the master bedroom and one minor bedroom, ideal for guests, on the ground floor. ■

“We love it here...

our home is our holiday escape” “We love the ocean and our brisk morning beachwalks before breakfast at a favourite cafe. Our apartment is just beautiful and the complex is amazingly well maintained. We take full advantage of the huge pool and barbeque area as well as the Club Room where we enjoy great times with guests. The other owners here are fabulous and we’ve made lots of new friends but the ‘piece de resistance’ for us is the magnificent balcony sunsets. We’ve waited all our lives for this” “This morning we woke to enjoy our cuppa while we perused the daily papers (delivered to our apartment) before breakfast looking over the fabulous ocean views. After attending to “chores” like emails that invade our lives, it was a walk along the white sands to Trigg, and then back to take a refreshing dip in the surf before relaxing by the CeVue pool protected from the breezes. suburb profile

WITH a combination of polished terrazzo and exposed aggregate flooring, the owner of this Scarborough residence said it was hard to single out a standout feature as his favourite. Developer Darren Hearn bought the block of land more than two years ago with plans to demolish the beach shack and build three contemporary townhouses as an investment prospect. “It’s what I do for a living – I usually try build a few homes and sell a couple. I’m always looking out for investment opportunities,” he said.

“The location is great – you’re two minutes from Scarborough Beach and are in close proximity to transport facilities. “I bought the block for its land value and I’m really happy with the end result. It’s an absolutely stunning property and represents real value for money. In terms of a modern home, you’ll get plenty of quality fixtures and fittings.” Mr Hearn said the property’s simplicity improved its overall appeal and all three townhouses had separate titles. LUXURY LIVING

There’s a cool kitchen hiding in all of us Two friends have introduced the breathtaking custom-made Italian Scavolini brand to Perth, writes JANE EVANS I’VE never thought kitchens were particularly ‘cool’. Perhaps because I can’t cook to save my life – boiling pasta is an effort – but after wandering through the new Scavolini showroom, pulling out drawers, admiring cutlery compartments and the like, I realise that these kitchens are not just super functional, they are super cool. Leading Italian kitchen manufacture Scavolini was practically unheard of in Perth six months ago. Now a 280 square metre showroom with the Scavolini name boldy written across its red exterior stands proudly on Stirling Highway, thanks to two hip western suburbs mums who bonded over a love for cooking, travel and design. Wanda Bresa and Teresa Wilkinson met through their sons attending school at Scotch College together. After becoming frustrated with the lack of choice for kitchen design in Perth, Wanda and Teresa took to researching international brands, and knew that they had stumbled upon something special when they discovered Scavolini. With stores throughout Europe and the USA, including Paris, Milan, New York and Barcelona, the pair decided to bring the kitchens to Perth and opened Australia’s

first showroom for the brand last November. Scavolini has been Italy’s top kitchen brand since 1984 with 40 models available in the current range. The Italian kitchen concept is open and stylishly modular – the sleek curvature of lines combines with brilliant color and cabinetry design. From classic to modern, the range is at the forefront of innovation, design and style right across Europe. Seven full-size kitchens from the range are on display in the Claremont showroom, along with an exclusive range of European accessories and furnishings, allowing customers the opportunity to see and touch every facet of the kitchens. World renowned Italian car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, who has designed both Ferraris and Lamborghinis, designed one of the brand’s most popular kitchens – Flux – which appears at the centre of the Claremont showroom and will feature in the home Wanda and her husband are building. The women describe the kitchens – which can be ordered and installed within 12 weeks – as medium to high end, but surprisingly affordable. Teresa said the kitchens were all custom made to suit a client’s wants and needs. “The Italian feel transcends, though, and

Wanda Bresa and Teresa Wilkinson.

the kitchen is designed on family dynamics,” she said. “You won’t have to compromise the look of your kitchen to have a very functional drawer.” Next month the women will make use of the one fully functioning kitchen in the showroom when they team up with the Italian Chamber of Commerce to host cooking and language classes. For more information visit the Scavolini showroom at 256 Stirling Highway, Claremont or call 9385 4575 ■
