Tackling affordability crisis Private sector recognised as vital to any solution. By VANESSA SCHMITT THE lack of affordable housing in the Peel region has been the focus of much attention since the death of a father and two children at a Mandurah caravan park earlier this month. A tight rental market, rising interest rates and the increasing cost of living has resulted in more people in the community living in tents, cars or sheds. In response, the State Government released an Affordable Housing Strategy last week, which was welcomed by the Real Estate Institute of Western Australia. REIWA chief executive Anne Arnold, who also sat on the Affordable Housing Task Force, said that her organisation had considerable input to the strategy and was pleased the minister had adopted some of the recommendations put forward by the institute. “The Government is right to recognise the role of the private sector in finding solutions to a complex problem,” Mrs Arnold said. “Around 80 per cent of all rental accommodation is provided by private citizens who invest in property. “The Government simply does not have the funds to provide housing for those West Australians on low and fixed
