WHEN it comes to selling your home, it needs to stand out from the competition. So, before you start looking for an estate agent, follow these value-adding tips. 1. Revamp the entrance First impressions count, particularly if you are about to put your house on the market. By painting the front door in a strong colour, such as red or blue, updating doorway furniture and the entrance mat, you are sending a message that your home is up-to-date and wel- maintained. 2. Refresh with paint Painting the interior can lift the mood of your house and it is inexpensive if you are willing to do the work. If your budget allows, tackle walls yourself and get professionals in to do the ceilings. If you are taking the DIY approach, tackle one room at a time. 3. Update flooring Getting carpets cleaned can make a huge amount of difference to the look of a home, so calling in the professionals is well worth considering. However, no amount of cleaning is going to lift a floor covering

Makeover the bathroom “You can get a quick lift by replacing the toilet, sink and tapware,” Amanda Falconer, author of The Renovator's Survival Guide, says. “A new toilet gives the impression of cleanliness and a new sink and taps can also help turn a tired bathroom into something more modern. There are sinks of almost any shape and colour available, but more organic shapes are the current trend.” 9. Fit new taps If the bathroom and kitchen are in good shape but just in need of a little updating, look at the taps. By fitting good-looking, matching taps you are bringing a sense of cohesion to the house. Good taps also suggest good plumbing. 10. Groom the garden After a general tidy up, look at any gaps in planting. If you’re putting the house up for sale, use established potted plants to fill the holes as you can take them with you when you go. ■

Property dream team moves into place High-profile agent William Porteous takes aboard his son, the daughter of Alan Bond and a former Toyota executive THE William Porteous empire is expanding with the arrival of three new staffers. Among those joining Perth’s highestprofile real estate agent is Jody Fewster, daughter of Perth businessman Alan Bond. One of Australia’s richest men in the 1980s following a string of high-profile acquisitions, Mr Bond was declared bankrupt in 1992 before roaring back last year to be named among the top 200 wealthiest people in Australia by BRW magazine, with an estimated net worth of $265 million. Jody told Residential there were advantages to being Alan’s daughter. “I had a privileged upbringing and a wonderful international education,” she said. “As a consequence, I developed a broad network of both business and social contacts. I also met my husband, Damian Fewster, through dad’s involvement with the America’s Cup.’’ Damian was a bow man on Australia II when in 1983 it became the first challenger to win the Cup in 132 years of racing. The history-making yacht is now the centrepiece of the WA Maritime Museum in Fremantle. Jody has had a diverse business career. She started her own customer care consultancy in Sydney a decade ago before moving back to Perth to buy, sell and renovate luxury homes in Peppermint Grove and Mosman Park over the past eight years. Now, she is excited about joining the William Porteous Properties International team. “I was thinking about going back to full-

time work when Willie asked me to join him,’’ she said. “I have known him for a long time and have a huge amount of respect for him. “I appreciate the sophisticated nature of the client base. also appeals to me. “Being married to a builder who is also a yachtsman means we also enjoy the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club and parkland along the river’s edge.” Another fresh face to join the team at William Porteous is the founder’s son, Andrew. After returning from the UK last year, Andrew Porteous began work with developer Saville Australia, selling projects off the plan, before deciding the time was right to join his father’s company. “I was educated in the UK, studied in Tokyo for five years at Sophia University and

speak fluent Japanese,” he said. “Post graduation, I worked for the Welsh government looking after the Japanese companies in Wales for two years. “After that, I returned to Perth for four years and was involved in the security alarm business and then water purification business. “In 2000, I returned to London and was involved in the health and fitness industry for eight years, following my passion for sport, health and wellness. “Now, I’m ready for a new challenge – real estate. “I am extremely excited to be joining my father. “Many people suggested that I join him years ago, but it never felt the time was right. Now, it does feel right. I look forward to a long career with the company.” William Porteous has also welcomed Mark Dimmock to the team. For the past four years, Mark has been working in vehicle sales with Toyota. “I started out on the showroom floor and then moved into management, gaining experience managing a sales team with strict monthly budgets,’’ he said. “I’ve always had an interest in real estate though, and I’m thrilled to have an opportunity to get more involved in the industry. “Willie is the best in the industry. To work within his agency and learn from him is the greatest opportunity I could hope for.’’ ■
