LEADING WA construction firm Pindan has been praised for its ground-breaking Islands project in South Beach. The company scooped one of the top awards at last month’s 2010 Master Builders-Bankwest Excellence in Construction Awards at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Pindan picked up Best Multi Unit Development for South Beach’s Islands project, as well as double honours for Rio Tinto’s new offices at Perth Domestic Airport. It was listed as a finalist in Best Commercial Building and Best Building Fitout categories. The recently completed $72 million stage one of the Islands venture released 50 world-class luxury units into Perth’s competitive top-end property market. Features include an on-site gym, pool and cafe, as well as panoramic views of Garden, Carnac and Rottnest islands. Pindan director of business development Scott Davison said the story

behind the landmark residential project was as fascinating as the popular beachside district itself. “Right from the start our client, Stockland, understood how passionate the local community was about protecting the heritage and natural environment of the South Beach site,” he said.
Before construction began, the former industrial site was completely repatriated and the adjacent foreshore rejuvenated after years of neglect. Mr Davison said while the structure and form of Islands appeared simple and uncomplicated, the architecture was in fact very intelligent and sophisticated.

The property market showed signs of a recovery over the past six months, according to the Urban Development Institute of Australia THE Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) said that despite lagging consumer confidence, WA’s property market had shown signs of a recovery over the past six months. UDIA CEO Debra Goostrey said there was a 6 per cent increase in land sales during the March 2010 quarter, a marginal recovery from the 18 per cent drop in December. “This was our first real sign that the market was normalising after a rough year in 2008 early 2009,” Ms Goostrey said. “ The First Home Owner Grant, which was cut in December 2009, had pushed up sales numbers at the bottom end of the market and the March stats showed that the middle market was starting to move as a result.

“Prices were up slightly in the March quarter, reflecting the increase in buyers from the middle income sector.” Ms Goostrey said that despite recently released housing statistics representing a decrease in construction activity, UDIA was confident that increasing land sales would flow through to help improve those housing construction levels. “A rate rise this month could have spelt disaster for the market recovery,” Ms Goostrey said. “We are now expecting that consumers will become increasingly interested in buying land in the coming months as confidence creeps up and rates hopefully remain steady. This will have a positive effect on housing construction approvals and starts later in the year.”■
