Family shares green tips with open house The Campbells’ solar-passive Brentwood home ticks all the boxes for greener living By TANYA MACNAUGHTON DAVID and Monica Campbell’s Brentwood house was specifically designed and constructed to work as harmoniously as possible with the environment, as well as being practical to live in both now and in later years. Solar Dwellings designed the house and it was built by Tamar Homes, completed in July last year. Mr Campbell said the block was selected because of its ideal east-west orientation, allowing for a good northerly aspect. The positioning opposite a lake for
summer cooling also maximised the potential for building a solar passive house. Sustainable features around the home range from waterwise plants, underground tanks and PV grid connection to solar panels, cross-ventilation and louvre windows, power monitoring, double-glazing and external shading. “We really wanted a house that was naturally comfortable all year round with minimal airconditioning or heating,” Mr Campbell said. “It had to have good natural lighting and feel open with good breeze-ways.” Mr Campbell said that besides green living considerations, they decided to build a sustainable home for financial reasons. “When we come home into the house it is remarkably comfortable whatever time of the year and of course with increasing power and gas costs, plus the increased focus on the environment, we do not feel guilty about
having a house of this size that would normally consume a lot of resources,” he said. “We also have two adult children living at home, and likely to for many years to come, so the house had to accommodate up to six adults with minimal impact on each other. “We do a lot of entertaining so there was a strong focus on entertainment areas that had to be central and very functional while low maintenance of both house and gardens was a high priority and this is reflected in the design and construction.” Mr Campbell said although the design process was time-consuming, the team at Solar Dwellings encouraged and allowed them to have a lot of say during the development and, since completion, the company has won a number of awards for the home. “However, these awards are not the reason we were encouraged to open our
home on Sustainable House Day,” Mr Campbell said. “We just want to demonstrate that you can have a large modern house that is economical to run and yet be comfortable to live in.” South Fremantle heritage building The Meeting Place will also be open on Sunday. In July last year, the City of Fremantle became the first WA local government to go carbon neutral and retro-fitted the community learning centre as a sustainable demonstration house, regularly running retro-fit tours. The project aims to show how a typical Fremantle home can be adapted to reduce energy costs.
