More power to the buyer EMPOWERING property buyers with the right knowledge is a significant benefit when buying real estate, says Time Conti Sheffield director Paul Conti. This is why the real estate veteran of more than 44 years is running a five-week series of two-hour workshops called Buying Real Estate – The Essentials. Mr Conti said the essentials every buyer should know would be covered. “The course will give them a broader understanding of the people, processes, costs, legalities and considerations involved in a real estate transaction. “And by the end they will also have a better understanding of where the agent fits into the equation.” Areas covered will include basic principles in the documentation required for transactions, titles or encumbrances that might apply to a land purchase, the types of finance packages available, areas of income-tax law that might affect a property’s investment potential and how to assess a good real estate investment. “This is not a typical ‘investment’ seminar series,” Mr Conti said. “It’s teaching buyers about what they’re in for and what their options are.” The course costs $495, including GST. An introductory offer of $395 will apply to registrations before October 12. The series begins on Tuesday, October 19, running from 6pm to 8pm at the Time Conti Sheffield conference room located at 338 Albany Highway, Victoria Park. Grand final rematch puts marina auction on hold THE 2010 AFL grand final rematch between Collingwood and St Kilda over the weekend postponed more than just wedding ceremonies and Eddie McGuire’s European holiday. Applecross projects win design awards AN innovative family home on a battleaxe block in Applecross has been named winner of the Building Designers Association of WA’s 2010 award for residences with a floor area between 351450sqm. The award, to building designer Gary Keen, of Gary Keen Building Design, was announced at the BDAWA annual design awards gala presentation dinner at the University Club of WA on Saturday. The judges made the following observations of the award-winning project: “Don’t underestimate the power of a lemon-scented gum. Gary Keen certainly didn’t in his design solution for a client wanting to lose nothing of the ambience afforded by such a magnificent tree in the development of a quiet battleaxe block in Applecross. “The grand old tree was pivotal not only as an entry statement to the property but also as a benchmark for the scaling of the stylish, contemporary structure it serves to complement. “In the battleaxe scheme of things, special consideration was needed for the journey from the road to the house, so the lemon-scented gum held the key to the design outcome. Using it as a distinctive point of reference, the designer cleverly landscaped its location as the feature around which all else would evolve. “The result is stunning empathy – a twostorey wing that blends with the scale of the nearby tree at the same time providing a visual connection with the main road,
