Principal back in million club LJ HOOKER Fremantle joint principal Jon Brady has requalified for membership to the prestigious MultiMillion Dollar Chapter of the company’s Captain’s Club. Baby boom could fuel demand for family homes Kinder said these figures meant that for the first three months of 2010 there were more than 400 babies born in WA every week. “Last year in WA there were some 31,075 births, which represents a jump in overall births of 24 per cent compared to 2004,’’ he said. “This strong natural growth in our population will help underpin demand for housing in WA over

LAND has continued to be a positive force for the WA residential market, according to a new review by commercial real estate services firm CB Richard Ellis. CBRE Perth residential valuations director Michael Veletta said residential land was the only market sector that could lay claim to reasonable levels of demand, particularly in well-located infill areas or land estates that offered a range of local services and infrastructure. “As incentives in this sector diminish, land is one of the only market sectors to have recorded positive movement in values,” Mr Veletta said. “However, prices are not rising across the board with some areas such as Dawesville and Wannannup suffering from an over supply situation and soft demand that has resulted in falling values.” Mr Veletta said the overall market remained under pressure with about 16,000 properties currently on the market. This number is approaching the market highs that were seen in late 2008. He said preliminary REIWA figures highlighted the slow market conditions over the past quarter and suggested an up to a 4 per cent fall in median house prices across the metropolitan area. “With home finance very slow, topend markets are yet to recover from the May announcement of the Mining Super Profits Tax, coupled with a range of global issues, increasing interest rates and a soft share market,” he said. ■

THERE is something magical about a rug. Whether Aladdin and his flying carpet have anything to do with it or not, there is no denying that a beautiful hand-woven rug creates mystique and beauty in any room of the house. Specialising in an exclusive range of rugs from all over the globe, including countries such as Nepal, Turkey and Pakistan, Jenny Jones Rugs (JJR) in Claremont is continually designing and developing new collections for its clients. Owner Jenny Jones said all rugs were exclusively designed by JJR and handknotted in 100 per cent natural wools and silks (no machines, glue guns or synthetic material). “We never stand still as we always want to be one step ahead, especially when you’re competing at an international level,’’ she said. “We have employed designers from around the world that specialise in graphic design and have an artistic background, so we may always have a fresh look. “Each rug has been designed like an original piece of art. “Before the design is even woven, it can generally take the design team a week to a month to perfect the design.” Their new old-world vintage rugs with worn-out pattern and raised silk are the latest trends from America and Europe. “Our showroom has a fresh look,” Jenny said.

“Every six weeks we update our range with new designs and colour stories.’’ “We set up our showroom like a gallery with beauty and elegance because we respect how much work has gone into each rug.” Inspired by nature and beautiful colours, Jenny’s interest in rugs grew while she was living in Turkey with her family in the 1990s. She fell in love with the world of rugs, which included its relationship with the Turkish culture. “I have just put together a collection of rugs based on Australian wildlife using rich colours and interesting textural weaving to

bring movement and definition to the design,’’ she said. “With a background in fashion, I am always looking at the latest trends and colours that are coming into world fashion. “Because our rugs take four months to make (being handmade), I have to choose colours and designs before they come into season.” Jenny travels worldwide in search for inspiring art, history and culture, to bring direction and passion into her work and designs. She also attends the annual world rug expo in Germany to see the latest colours, trends and materials. ■
