The Switch Homes for Living interior designer said among the most popular and useful trends emerging in kitchens were open plan layouts with hidden sculleries, plus outdoor kitchens. “Butler’s pantries or sculleries are the hottest things in kitchen design spurred by the open plan living trend,” Mr Haftka said. “These allow you to keep all the mess away from the area where your gather and entertain and can be as simple or as complex as you like – from an extra bench with sink to a complete fit-out with oven, fridge and dishwasher. “More and more clients are requesting big open kitchen spaces to work from and they will usually incorporate the breakfast bar as part of their workspace surface that results in a long uncluttered island bench.” Mr Haftka said there were so

many options during the planning process, and provided the following design tips for styling your modern dream kitchen. ■ Engineered stone benchtops come in a great range of colours and various finishes and are a more durable option for families as they are easy to maintain and protect with their non-porous, stain and scratch resistant properties. ■ Granite benches have a natural beauty and elegance that adds depth and character to your home. Marble stone also has its

More discerning baby boomers abandon the empty suburban nest in favour of a city lifestyle WITH their children gone, a growing number of WA baby boomers are selling up and moving closer to the city. According to Caporn Young principal Richard Young, there is a trend among this age bracket to sell their suburban family home and move into an upmarket apartment in either Applecross,

Subiaco, South Perth, Crawley, West Perth or East Perth. Mr Young said that executive apartments are now achieving selling prices above $1 million and even over $2 million in these prime locations, and Caporn Young were finding that buyers of these apartments are prepared to pay premium prices to secure a

quality apartment or unit which has a scarcity factor. “In particular, we are finding that the views the apartment has to offer is a key factor in determining its scarcity value,”’ he said. “Quality apartments with unobstructed views over water are in very high demand –

especially ones that also give city views at the same time. “This has been a key reason for the success of the apartment development at the Raffles hotel in Applecross as north-facing apartments and penthouses offer magnificent river and city views. “We (Caporn Young) are also finding rising demand for
