Rewards are worth the renovation stress Transforming a home built in the 1920s to one fit for 2010 was the challenge, writes CARMELLE WILKINSON RENOVATING your home can be a rewarding and stressful experience, and no-one knows this to be truer than Altus Real Estate agent David Fear. With extensive renovations to his 1920s Nedlands home now complete, he spoke with Residential about the trials and setbacks associated with such a large project. “I’ve never been a believer in knocking down a home to make way for a new one, so when I first saw this Nedlands home I immediately saw its potential,’’ he said. “It was located in the most beautiful leafy street, and just minutes away from popular sporting clubs and the river.” Having renovated before, David knew what he was in for, but the attraction of giving this old home a new life was too appealing, and the renovation began in early 2009. Fourteen months in the making, and the results are astounding. “We took the best part of the

home and cleaned it out,’’ he said. “We made the floor plan work, and Kingsley Pearce Architects achieved a remarkable result.’’ Stunning new extensions to the home include a lavish living area with soaring ceilings and gas fireplace, a large multi-purpose room with ensuite and spa and a state-of-the-art kitchen with Caesar stone bench tops, servery, Bosch appliances and its own herb garden. Brand new travertine tiled bathrooms and a fabulous decked
area outside, are just a few other additions to the home. David said one of the biggest challenges when renovating was sticking to the budget. “Be prepared for it to double, as people often don’t take into account extra costs like landscaping, painting and window treatments. “Plans need to be thought out properly before you start any works, and it’s important to speak with your builder and architect.” While David was overjoyed with the results, he said his family found
the 14-month renovations to be quite frustrating towards the end. “My wife, and my daughters in particular, were thrilled when the renovations were finished, while my son, who is studying architecture, enjoyed it,’’ he said. “The house was always covered in dust and constantly having a stream of tradespeople in and out of the house was difficult at times.” With the home now on the market, David said he was looking for his next project. “I enjoy renovating, I like the creativity and
it’s great to see what could be done with a home that would have otherwise been bowled over. “I like to create a home that is inviting and welcoming and I think we achieved this with the Nedlands home. It’s got a great feel about it, and is fantastic for entertaining.” David said certain emotions were experienced when selling a home, and having been through the renovating process helped him better understand the anxieties and concerns his clients experienced when selling. ■
Aspect on Wellington provides range of apartment lifestyle choices More than half of the 80 apartments have already been snapped up off the plan, reports CARMELLE SANDER A PROMINENT city location, generous apartment sizes and affordable prices are luring homebuyers to Australand’s Aspect on Wellington residential complex. Construction on the development started this month, with 48 of the building’s 80 apartments already being snapped up off the plan. The 2530sqm site within East Perth’s revitalised Riverside precinct is surrounded by historic landmarks such as Queens Gardens and is close to Claisebrook Cove’s many restaurants and cafes. Archistone was founded in 1992, operating out a single quarry site in rural Gin Gin. The company created the reconstituted limestone block and developed its consistency and colourfast resilience to become a premium quality product. Today Archistone operates two manufacturing plants as well as quarrying. Archistone blocks have been tested to prove up to 60
per cent more dense than natural limestone, which limits overall penetration of water and saline solutions that are the main cause of colour deterioration. According to the company, the tighter the surface area and lower porosity of manufactured stone means that Archistone will maintain its colour under external conditions and is less susceptible to fungal deposits. The company specialises in bullnosing and capping, feature stonewalls, landscaping and edging blocks, paving, pier blocks and pier caps, walling blocks and water features. Archistone offers a full range of services from delivery with its own fleet of trucks to in-house design and authorised installers. It also services all aspects of the market from Architects and Engineers to Landscapers and the D.I.Y market.
