Peta’s goals reignited with comeback Wife of former West Coast Eagle Chris Waterman is looking forward to the challenge. AFTER a short break, Peta Waterman, wife of former West Coast Eagle Chris Waterman, is returning to real estate. Now based at Acton North in City Beach, Peta joined Acton Mandurah in a business development role last year when Chris took on

Every home or apartment, sold or leased, now needs to be fitted with a minimum of two RCDs, reports CARMELLE WILKINSON.
A SHORTAGE of skilled labour in the housing sector is getting worse, the Housing Industry Association says. The HIA said a recovery in private demand for new homes and renovation work, coupled with the recovering resources sector, were driving demand for the skilled residential labour force. “The simultaneity of the demand for this labour in 2010 from competing sources highlights the risk of the residential sector facing an acute shortage of skilled labour from late in 2010,” HIA chief economist Harley Dale said. He said the shortage of skilled labour could significantly constrain new-home construction. The HIA’s trade availability index in the March 2010 quarter fell to its lowest level since September 2008. The index dropped to -0.11 from -0.08 in the December quarter in 2009, meaning there was a moderate undersupply of tradespeople. “There were shortages in 10 out of 13 skilled trades in the March 2010 quarter,” Dr Dale said. Shortages were in bricklaying, carpentry, ceramic tiling, electrical, general building, landscaping, other trades, plumbing, roofing and site preparation. ■

MANY owners of higher density properties such as town houses and apartments in Perth do not realise that new government rules relating to Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and smoke alarms apply to them as well as owners of stand-alone properties. According to Home Owners Utility Services (HOUS) managing director Todd Allender, a large number of emergency callouts conducted by his company found a large number of rental properties, in particular, still did not have RCD devices. “The Western Australian Government implemented new RCD regulations in August 2009,’’ he said. “This new legislation applies to people selling their homes, and landlords. “Every home sold or leased now needs to be fitted with a minimum of two RCDs, which should protect all power point and lighting circuits. “HOUS is finding that many owners of high density rental properties do not realise that when a new tenant takes up residency, landlords need to install the devices before the lease agreement is signed, and for homes with a continuing tenancy, landlords have until August 8, 2011, to fit the RCDs.” Mr Allender said the latest Census revealed that 24.7 per cent, or around one in four properties in Perth, are rental properties and many of these rental homes are higher

density properties such as apartments. “The landlords of these properties either assume that the legislation does not apply to them or that it is a matter to be dealt with the strata company managing the complex,’’ he said. “From October 1, 2009, mains powered smoke alarms must be fitted in all existing residential buildings prior to sale and when a new tenancy agreement is signed for rental properties. “If there are no tenancy changes in rental properties, then mains powered smoke alarms must be fitted by October 1, 2011. “Further to this, HOUS recommends that only photoelectric smoke alarms are used and not the cheaper ionisation type.” Failure to comply with this legislation can result in significant financial penalties for landlords. The parents-to-be are the duo behind luxury outdoor living specialists Ritz Exterior Design. Guy started the company 10 years ago after turning his hand from building and construction in rural WA to landscape and gardens in the city. “I have always enjoyed creative arts, logic and practicality but I tend to get frustrated with repetitive tasks,” he said. “Landscape design and construction incorporates such a wide range of products and services, there really is an endless supply of inspiration and potential in every project.” After a career in fashion and retail in
London, Jodie returned to Perth in 2004 and met Guy.
