Doing the hard yards for kids Joyce staffers dust off the joggers for City to Surf mission to fund wheelchair target COME this Sunday, Joyce Property Investments will go beyond their usual duties of assisting with property management and property investing to help WA children in need. In a bid to raise funds for Wheelchairs for Kids, a team of 16 energetic staff (along with owners Graham and Lisa Joyce) will hit the pavement to take part in this year’s City to Surf marathon. As if running or walking the 12km distance was not hard enough, staff member Darren Meakins will be pushing a wheelchair. “I’ll be taking my four-year old daughter Ada on Sunday, and if she gets tired, she’ll get

a push in the wheelchair,’’ he said. Mr Meakins said while the company set an initial target of six wheelchairs, they have already raised enough for the six and now have their sights set on 10.

In preparation for the big day, Mr Meakins said team training sessions were suggested, but said it was too difficult to find a suitable time for everyone. “Many people are doing their own training,’’ he said. “We have a mixed bag where some staff are running the 12km distance and some are walking.â€? Mr Meakins said this was the company’s first time participating as a team and everyone was looking forward to it. “I believe it will give a boost to the team as it is an achievement together and raising money for a wonderful charity will have a profound effect on team input,’’ he said. â–

Good western suburbs mix in design award entries Building designers put their best work forward for annual BDAWA awards. By JANE EVANS NINE western suburbs properties are among entrants in this year’s Building Designers Association of WA design awards, which acknowledge the State’s most innovative residential, commercial and industrial building projects of 2010. The judging process is carried out across 21 categories ranging from small to large homes, multi-residential developments, commercial and industrial projects, residential and commercial interiors, alterations and additions, public buildings, and energy-efficient

and environmentally-sustainable buildings. Previous BDAWA award winner Peter Fryer of Subiaco company Peter Fryer Design, has two properties up for judging – a Shenton Park home, entered in both the best single residence and best residential interior categories, and a Swanbourne home that is up for best environmentally sustainable building. In 2009, Subiaco-based Meyer Shircore & Associates won seven of the 16 State awards, including best public building, best commercial interior and best special project/structure.

Its design of a Concept Fertility Clinic on Nicholson Road, Subiaco is an entrant in this year’s special project/structures category. Forced out of Zimbabwe in 2002 after their farms were seized, Cyril and Genny Sauzier set about rebuilding their lives, writes CASSANDRA DE WIND POLITICAL division and three farm seizures by the Mugabe regime eight years ago left Gingin couple Cyril and Genny Sauzier with nothing to fight for in their homeland Zimbabwe. Along with all commercial farmers coerced to surrender their farms, the Sauziers – now ostracised by a country they once loved – decided to depart the African nation and arrived in Perth mid-2002. Although the pair cherished their prized farms in Zimbabwe, they were in no position to purchase a developed ranch after they were forced to relinquish all rights to their assets. The Sauziers decided they were not in a position to purchase a developed farm, so instead settled for an 80ha piece of land in the quiet town of Gingin. At the age of 52, Mr Sauzier knew there would be hard times ahead. The land had no electricity, gas or telephone connections, let alone crop or pasture harvests. Against all odds, the Sauziers managed to develop an olive farm from scratch – a farm that is today referred to as one of the district’s attractions in the annual Gingin Expo.

The Sauziers’ success story has previously appeared in numerous newspapers, with Mr Sauzier sharing his farming trials, tribulations and accomplishments whenever he could. In 2010, the Gingin property boasts nearly 14,000 olive trees, an olive oil processing plant imported from Italy, stainless steel storage vats a bottling plant and an array of equipment used to function the pair’s olive venture. The 2007-residence itself has around 360sqm of living space, with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, an office and open-plan living areas. Surrounded by mature gum trees and expansive lawns on an automatic reticulation system, the home has lavish fixtures and fittings and is an ideal place to retire to after a hard day’s work. The couple’s achievements were remarkably accomplished in eight years. Proud of their home and business venture, they made the painful decision to put their property on the market to move closer to their family in Perth. The Sauziers could not be prouder of their feat and have proved that money can indeed grow on trees. ■

Home ownership slips further out of reach Steadily rising rates and property values is putting that dream on a back-burner, writes CARMELLE WILKINSON SOARING rate hikes and rising home values are making it more difficult to afford a home in Perth. According to the quarterly Housing Industry Association & Commonwealth Bank affordability report, properties are now substantially more expensive than they were in June last year. Housing affordability in Perth’s metropolitan areas dropped 2.1 per cent in the June 2010 quarter, while in regional WA affordability improved 12.3 per cent. The average monthly mortgage payment in Perth rose $109 in the June 2010 quarter since March and $856 since June last year. HIA chief economist Harley Dale said as housing affordability slipped away, so too did the chance for many Australians to realise their dream of owning a home. “Unless as a nation we are willing to accept that home ownership is no longer a fundamental tenet of our society worth fighting for, then substantial federal engagement in addressing plummeting housing affordability is required,’’ he said. “There has been a dire lack of commitment in this Federal election campaign to address the substantial hurdles aspiring home owners face. “Helping Australians afford a roof over their head is surely a fundamental responsibility of government.’’ Affordability across the nation declined by 6.5 per cent over the June 2010 quarter across the nation’s capital cities and was down by 3.5 per cent in Regional Australia. ■
