The Peninsula keeps coming up trumps UDIA award for Aurora apartment tower gives Mirvac more silverware for the trophy cabinet

CARMELLE WILKINSON Editor

WITH its striking architectural design, proximity to the Perth CBD and luxurious living options, it’s not a surprise Mirvac’s The Peninsula, Burswood is turning heads. The development recently received high acclaim at the recent Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) WA Awards for Excellence, with the project’s Aurora apartment building winning Best High Density Development. Aurora, which stands at 21 levels and comprises 133 residential apartments,is the fourth tower to be completed at The Peninsula, Burswood. Mirvac WA chief executive Evan Campbell says the award is testament to the quality of construction and level of finishes, attention to

detail and architectural expression of the building. “Aurora really showcases Mirvac’s design philosophy towards high quality residential apartment living,” he said. “The building has a striking architectural design with modern, spacious apartments that are complemented by a range of facilities including a fully equipped gymnasium, heated swimming pool, sundeck and barbecue area. “Aurora makes the most of its location just 5km from the CBD, with the orientation and design of the building maximising stunning views of the Swan River, city skyline and Burswood Park golf course.” The Peninsula, Burswood’s latest win adds to a swag of previous awards including two UDIA High Density Development Awards for Allegro, the first tower within the development, as well as the 2008 Master Builders Award for Best Metropolitan Development Comprising MultiUnit Dwellings over $10 million. Just a limited number of luxury apartments are available for sale in Aurora, priced from $680,000, with a choice of two, three and fourbedroom designs available.

Top design awards for three western suburbs projects Wembley, Cottesloe and Subiaco figure prominently in annual BDAWA accolades THREE western suburbs buildings have snapped up honours in this year’s Building Designers Association of WA annual awards. A new contemporary family home in Wembley, an iconic heritage home in Cottesloe and a fertility clinic in Subiaco were among winners at Saturday’s gala presentation event at the University Club of WA. Building designers Griff Morris and Ken Wibberley, of Solar Dwellings, were applauded for their eco friendly design of the residence in Wembley. Judges acknowledged that

Award-winning contemporary extension to an iconic heritage home in Cottesloe.

while the client sought a visually appealing home that would stand out from the existing streetscape, great importance was placed on its environmental sustainability.

Among its many sustainable features are a rainwater harvesting system, photovoltaic system, heat pump hot water system, water efficient taps and smart

wiring. A sensitive renovation to one of Cottesloe’s iconic heritage homes was named winner of the BDAWA award for residential alterations over $200,000. Judges said the designer, William Clark of William Clark Design, was particularly careful to protect and conserve the original building. A new fertility clinic in Subiaco was named winner of the award for special structures. Stephen Shircore, of Meyer Shircore and Associates, designed the state-of-the-art facility. ■

Understand the specs A CLEAR understanding of builders’ specifications is critical. This week Tristan Kirkham from New Home Building Brokers (pictured) shares helpful top tips. 1. Make sure both parties understand what you want People have pictures and photos of homes showing the specification they like; however, having champagne taste on a beer budget is very common. So a have clear line of communication of this dream specification and make sure a builder costs your home correctly. 2. Builders’ ability to deliver Many people find out far too late in the process a builder’s inability to install a particular item. Choosing the right builder upfront where detail and responsibilities are outlined is the only way to avoid this disappointment. 3. What is good quality & value Expensive brands don’t necessarily mean they will be good quality or actually work. Picking fancy tapware, for example, can be a plumber’s nightmare, which you may not discover until your first maintenance call to the builder after you have moved in. Always discuss upgraded items with tradesmen, the builders and an independent consultant upfront. 4. Builders’ mark-ups Builders are required to outline to you the margin they are placing on a variation item under the Home Building Contracts Act, however they do not have to tell you their costs. So you really cannot see the mark-up, and this frustrates people. Using an independent consultant can help you understand the real value you are getting. 5. Fashionable in future It never fails to amaze me the amount of homes that people build featuring high fashion statements and impractical items. Do get this correct or it will cost you long term when you one day try to sell the property.

Luxurious and timeless, reports JANE EVANS WHEN designing their riverside property, the owners of this Mosman Park residence did not want a show home. Instead, they envisaged a relaxed, tropic-inspired space and Charlie Casella Homes built the stunning property a little over three years ago. Number 34 has a wide, elevated frontage with a timeless design, emulating the luxurious plantation residences of the Hawaiian islands. Located at the end of a small, quiet cul-de-sac in prestigious Mosman Waters, the home overlooks natural parkland and enjoys beautiful views of the river. Fully matured palms trees surround the home within beautiful landscaped gardens that automatically illuminate at night. There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms plus a large study that could be another bedroom. No expense was spared in the construction.

3

The window and doorframes throughout the home appear to be timber but are in fact an imported simulated grain from Europe that never fades or wears, a wonderful quality so close to the river. Bamwood flooring lines the floor and natural light fills the home through huge double-glazed windows. There is granite to all external terraces, Italian tiling in all bathrooms and a magnificent oversized kitchen with self-closing drawers, high gloss lacquer finish, Ceasar stone benchtops and Bosch appliances. An elegant, cedar panelled Cabana overlooks the swimming pool with a quartz finish, providing a stunning area for barbecue meals, entertaining or a glass of wine. An activity or multi-media room is located off the kitchen and is perfect for children’s own space. The bedrooms are upstairs and possess commanding river views through plantation shutters. ■

Elevate your lifestyle to uncompromising style Quality fixtures and fittings include an elevator servicing each floor of this three-level residence. By TANYA MACNAUGHTON THE brief for the Palazzo Homes design of Panorama was simple – to achieve views from every room. When visiting the display home in Applecross, it is evident that the design lives up to the name and certainly delivers on its requirement with an extensive use of windows. Uncompromising in style and comfort, the three-level residence is more than you could imagine. Contemporary architecture is complemented by all the trimmings, which include an elevator servicing each floor. The front entrance only heightens expectations, with its Spanish marble floor tiles and a grand staircase. This ground floor has a long laundry, with access to a triple garage, plus a guest bedroom featuring a high recessed ceiling, built-in robes, wellappointed semi-ensuite and door out to the patio with gleaming swimming pool outlook. The marble tiling continues on the first floor. An open-plan main living zone makes up the back half of the home and takes in the view which, in the case of the Fraser Road location, is of the Swan River and Melville Waters. The dining and family room has been designed with the capability to open out to a large balcony with glass balustrade. Clean, sleek lines dominate in the kitchen, featuring integrated fridge and freezer, drawers with a push close touch mechanism, walkin pantry and a hideaway utility space. Multiple textures have been used in this zone and they include glossy lacquer, Caesar stone, timber veneers and granite.

Smallish package has big things to boast Iconic modular home ideal for a couple or someone who loves entertaining, reports JANE EVANS THIS Claverton Street property is not the largest home I have ever walked into but it is certainly one of the most distinct. Designed by award-winning architect Joe Chindarsi, the iconic modular home stands out among its turn-of-the-century neighbours in a prime position within the monastery precinct of North Perth. Highly contemporary and featuring spectacular views of the city from its second level, there is much to love about the home. A casual floor plan lends itself to easy living, ideal for a couple or someone wanting to live

on their own, but who like to entertain. Premium quality finishes such as commercial grade window sections with anodized frames, polished aggregate floors, marble vanities and shadowline ceilings define the interior. A second living area with a kitchenette and oversized stacker doors open out to a fantastic alfresco entertaining area. On the other side of the entrance is a spacious guest bedroom featuring 100 per cent wool carpet and doors out to a timber deck. There is also a ground-floor bathroom with high gloss cabinetry and a marble vanity.

The first floor of the property is the centre of activity comprising the kitchen, lounge and dining. Miele appliances in the kitchen include an induction hotplate, built-in steamer and built-in automatic coffee machine. An island breakfast bar separates the area and a black glass splashback adds a sexy touch. The master bedroom and adjacent ensuite reflect boutique hotel chic and were featured in House & Garden magazine’s “Top 50 Rooms in Australia” in 2009. A five-metre wardrobe with black glass

doors runs the length of one side of the room and stacker doors open onto a large balcony with stunning Warwick fabric sheer curtains for privacy. The light and spacious nature of the home is due to extensive glazing and its north-facing aspect. It is also within walking distance to the city and Hyde Park, and just minutes from Beaufort Street, Northbridge and Leederville. This effortlessly stylish, green titled home might not be to everyone’s liking, but it is to mine. ■

Luxury apartment living in tranquil South Cottesloe for over 55s

Near-new group of eight stunners, reports JANE EVANS I LOVE the southern end of Cottesloe. It is much more tranquil than its bustling northern counterpart, and the ocean is still just metres away. South Cott apartments are a group of eight relatively new, luxury apartments for over 55s. Putting to rest any misconceptions about over-55 establishments being dated, this contemporary single-level home exudes sheer sophistication. Stunning landscaping surrounds the chic rendered and stone façade. Inside, both a lift and staircase services the second level apartment. A massive terrace, perfect for alfresco entertaining, flows on from a spacious open plan living area. Tasmanian oak timber floorboards feature throughout the living areas with plush carpet

to the bedrooms. Stack back doors open right up, allowing the indoors and outdoors to combine and the sea breeze to blow in. A sleek white gourmet kitchen with high gloss cabinetry and Miele appliances is positioned to the left of the living area with a door opening out to the terrace for serving convenience. The bathrooms are equally stylish with travertine flooring and chocolate and white colour schemes. Two bedrooms, each with built-in robes, are positioned overlooking the street and a third bedroom or study has sliding doors to separate it from the living area. Three car bays are available per apartment, in a lock-up garage with an additional storage room or wine cellar. Ideal for empty nesters to downsize, and just metres from the water, this home is the ultimate in easy Cottesloe living. If I was over 55, I know where I would be living. ■

With bush views to the front and back, you’ll feel like you’ve just bought your own little slice of tranquility. The fresh feel of the boards and the light colours of the interior, together with floor to ceiling windows only enhances that peaceful feeling of isolation. There are plenty of bedrooms and then downstairs is a big living/studying/entertaining area that was possibly once a double garage and workshed. It is also light and airy and includes one of the bathrooms. The pool takes up most of the back yard and is pleasantly overseen by a lovely patio area.

Transformed in eight-year labour of love Early 1900s home was a ‘total dump’ but it is still clear where the old part ends and the new part begins. JANE EVANS reports WHEN the owners of this charming Subiaco home bought it eight years ago, it looked vastly different. “It was a total dump, said the owner. “But there was never any intention to demolish it. The original part of the early 1900s home still possesses archetypal character features including high ceilings, jarrah floorboards and a return verandah at the front. During the eight years however, the home has been modernised and extended. “I never wanted to blend the old with the

new, the owner said. “I wanted it to be clear that this is where the old part ends and this is where the new part begins. The ‘new part’ is a contemporary kitchen, lounge, dining and alfresco, flanked by a large swimming pool, aggregate paving and charming garden. Expansive floor-to-ceiling glass windows allow the sunlight to stream in the area and provides a beautiful garden vista to enjoy from the kitchen. A skillion roof to the family and alfresco gives the home added space with clerestory

The master bedroom overlooks the front garden and features built in robes. The second and third bedrooms each feature fireplaces and one has french doors onto the verandah. Partnership blossoms after marriage Textile designers extend their collection to lampshades, cushions, bed throws, table runners and pelmets, writes CARMELLE WILKINSON

Artists Samantha de Souza and Luke Matutinovich in their design studio.

IT was looking through display homes with my husband two years ago that I first discovered Salu Art. Mesmerised by the aesthetic design and texture, I knew I wanted a Salu Art wall print in our new home. Now it seems every western suburbs home I review has this impressive Perth brand on its walls, and it doesn’t stop there. Salu Art have expanded their horizons to include lampshades, cushions, bed throws, table runners and pelmets. Founded in 2003 by Western Australian

artists and textile designers Samantha de Souza and Luke Matutinovich, Salu Art is a combination of their names and phonetically an informal greeting in French (Salut) where Samantha lived for five years when she was young. Using traditional hand screen-printing processes, Salu customise their award winning designs for residential and commercial interiors, offering their clients a highly personalised, versatile and creative service. Originally inspired by native WA flora, their eclectic collection now includes stunning motifs of architectural scenes, iconic buildings, collages exploring texture in objects and materials, and vintage and middle-eastern designs. Inspired by colour and texture, Samantha said every Salu piece was carefully hand crafted, making each piece a bit special and unique. “From hand drawing or cutting the stencils to colour mixing and the traditional hand printing process, we make everything entirely ourselves and you can really see this in the quality and texture,’’ she said.

“We offer selections from linens and heavy cottons to luxurious satin and incredible silks, which really bring our designs to life, reflect light and can create an ambience.” What began as a modest operation in 2003 in an old warehouse space in Osborne Park has grown into a booming business in Mt Hawthorn, with both national and international buyers. “When Salu began, we thought that our target market would be interior designers and young, new couples or home buyers from late 20s to 30s. But our client range is now between seven and 70 and our work is bought by the public, galleries, industry professionals such as architects, builders, designers and retail,’’ Samantha said. What began as a successful working relationship between Samantha and Luke quickly blossomed into something more – in 2004 they married. “Luke and I literally locked ourselves away in our studio for a year just focusing on art, design
