Time to fit RCDs to circuits IN recent years, more than 20 people, including six children, have been fatally electrocuted in WA homes. According to the State Government, all of these deaths might have been prevented if a residual-current device (RCD) had been fitted to the power point (socket outlet) and lighting circuits within the home. Rules relating to smoke alarms and RCD devices will soon become obligatory for all landlords in Western Australia. Managing Director of HOUS (Home Owners Utility Services) Todd Allender said owners of investment properties have just one year to comply with important new rules relating to smoke detectors and even less for RCD devices. From October 1, 2010, mains powered smoke alarms must be fitted in all existing residential buildings prior to sale and when a new tenancy agreement is signed for
rental properties. If there are no tenancy changes in rental properties, then mains powered smoke alarms must be fitted by October 1, 2011. Thus, landlords who have long term tenants must have their mains powered smoke detector alarms fitted within the next year. “A year can pass very quickly and landlords should make every effort to comply with the new laws relating to smoke detectors and RCDs as soon as possible,” said Mr Allender. “Failure to comply with this legislation could result in significant financial penalties,” he said More detailed information in relation to the new requirements for RCDs can be found at www.commerce.wa.gov.au/EnergySafety/RCD/ while information on smoke alarms can be found at www.fesa.wa.gov.au. ■
