developments. He also managed the construction of a large commercial cevelopment of 21 factories in Bentley before joining Kareena at her real estate business, Quin Ballard, in Como. The success of their family name in the local area led to Kareena and Adrian formally marketing themselves as Team Ballard following the merger of Jones Ballard in 2007. Pet bonds go up by $160 TENANTS with furry friends have been slapped with a $160 increase in the pet bond. The maximum pet bond that landlords are able to charge tenants increased from $100 to $260 from 1 June. According to the Commissioner for Consumer Protection,Anne Driscoll, this new charge reflects the present-day costs associated with fumigation after a tenant with a dog or cat has vacated a rental property. “The cost of fumigation has increased over the years and it is appropriate that the pet bond also increase to adequately cover this extra cost,’’ she said. “It’s important to note that the pet bond is in addition to the usual security bond and can be returned if the fumigation is not necessary.” Ms Driscoll said the increase in the pet bond may make it easier for pet owners to find rental accommodation, as landlords will be more willing to accept their applications knowing the cost of fumigation will be adequately met at the end of the tenancy. The decision to increase the pet bond was part of a detailed review of tenancy laws in WA and followed an extensive consultation and review period, which involved public meetings, focus groups and individual meetings. Tenants or landlords who have any queries about bonds should contact Consumer Protection on 1300 30 40 54 or consumer@ commerce.wa.gov.au. ■

Cottage taken to another level Delightful soaring extension. By JANE EVANS THIS original 1930s home had been on the market for ages when the current owners went to look at it. “It was so run-down and unliveable, I don’t think anyone wanted to touch it,” one of the owners said. “But we stood on the back deck, saw two beautiful, enormous trees in either corner of the property and realised the potential it had.” Seven years on, the pretty cottage-style façade is much the same, but the interior has undergone a breathtaking transformation. The front section of the property was gutted and completely refurbished and a striking, highly contemporary extension was added at the rear. High ceilings, jarrah floorboards and decorative architraves at the front are met with sleek lines,

extensive glass and expansive 5-metre high spaces at the rear. The luxurious master suite has a spacious walk-in robe and a magnificent ensuite. Two minor bedrooms are opposite, both lightfilled and with built-in robes. A fourth bedroom or home office is currently used an artist’s studio, with a mezzanine level to maximise the utility of the room. The stylish renovation features a stunning galley kitchen with stone benchtops overlooking the lounge and dining areas. However the real highlight of the extension is floor-to-ceiling aluminium stacker doors and windows that face north onto a wonderful cantilevered deck with a forest inspired garden retreat. A sandpit and blackboards have also been incorporated for the little ones. ■

West Coast Eagles chief Richard Godfrey puts his family home on the market. By KEREN BELLOS FEATURING lots of living space that is well divided, and in close proximity to some of WA’s top schools, this Wembley Downs residence is perfect for a family. But not just any family lives here. West Coast Eagles chief operating officer Richard Godfrey – who has been at the football club for 18 years and oversees operations including finance, marketing and projects – his wife Catherine, daughter Isabella, and sons Lachlan and Harrison have called it home for the past six years. “We were enticed by its family-friendly layout and location,” Richard explained. “Buxton is a fantastic street in a great neighbourhood and there are lots of good schools, shops, beaches and sports facilities nearby.” Built in 2004, the abode is on a 476sq m lowmaintenance block and is a shining example of contemporary living.

A large downstairs master suite that is separated from the rest of the home provides Richard and Catherine with a quiet retreat. Appropriately, it is carpeted in blue – a floor covering they inherited from the first owners. The deluxe master bedroom, which features walk-in and built-in robes, an ensuite and access to the paved alfresco area, has an adjoining, spacious lounge room. Equipped with a study desk, it is here that Isabella, Lachlan and Harrison often complete their homework. A centrally located, sleek, streamlined kitchen is equipped with ample bench space, appliance cupboard, dishwasher, microwave shelf, gas cook top, raised breakfast bar and all the storage space that a family needs. “The kitchen overlooks the dining and outdoor area, which is great because when the kids were little, I could make dinner and super-

vise them as they played,” Catherine said. The lower level is completed by a guest bathroom and another lounge area, where Richard likes nothing better than to sit down and relax while watching a game of AFL on the television. One of his favourite pieces of football memorabilia – a photo of the scene at the MCG as the final siren of the 2006 grand final sounds – adorns the wall. With two bedrooms, a bathroom and living area, upstairs belongs to the kids. Richard and Catherine added the solar-heated pool and cabana to the front of the property, and the children can’t access the area without their help. When the Godfreys aren’t home or at a West Coast home fixture, you’ll likely find them participating in sports. Richard is a member of a swim team at Beatty Park and competes in the Rottnest Channel

Swim as a soloist, Catherine is a triathlete and Isabella loves netball and cross country, while the boys participate in Auskick and tennis. When asked if he and his family would ever consider living in Fremantle, Richard’s answer was a resounding “no”. Space Real Estate agent Cam McGregor, who is selling the home and has been a Fremantle Dockers member for 16 years, would undoubtedly disagree. ■

Character and charm in garden setting Mt Claremont home’s attractions extend both inside and out. By KEREN BELLOS THE first owners of this Mount Claremont home loved the design so much that they rebuilt it on a smaller block at Beaconsfield. As for the current owners, who bought the Ian Collins residence four years later in 2000 and are ready to downsize, they say they’re really going to miss it. On taking a tour of the property, it’s not hard to see why it has won so many hearts. Autumn-touched Virgina creeper hugs the salmon-rendered exterior and together with the orange brick tiles and an adorable little balcony, the home has Tuscan charm in spades. It is happily situated on a 449sqm easy-care corner block and its street presence is enhanced by the well-maintained council land that fronts it.

The entry door opens to reveal an abode that is spacious yet cosy and brimming with character – a feature that is one of its best, according to the current owner. She said other attractions included a great location, wonderful neighbours and that each family member had plenty of room to do their own thing. The hub of the home is the lower-level, open-plan living area, which includes a recently renovated kitchen. Featuring a built-in pantry, large fridge recess and Bosch microwave, double oven, six-burner gas cook top and dishwasher, the kitchen has ample cupboards. The adjacent family room, which showcases the owner’s extensive collection of camels and other desert scene ware, is light and

opens to a covered patio. Paved and with two gas points, the patio is perfect for alfresco entertaining. It is surrounded by a delightful garden that includes strategically placed native flowering plants to attract the local bird life, roses, citrus and olive trees, a herb garden and fragrant lemon verbena plant ideal for making herbal teas. “We were brought up in rural England where we were used to growing our own fresh produce, however it's such a privilege for us now to be able to grow our own citrus fruits, vines and olives, something we would never have been able to do back home,” one owner said. “My husband experiments a lot with olives and chillies, and his hot, sweet chilli sauce is sheer perfection.

“It’s amazing what can be grown on a small plot.” Downstairs also comprises a large, carpeted formal lounge, laundry with built-in cupboards, and the master bedroom with ensuite comprising a single vanity, shower and toilet. All of the bedrooms have built-in robes, with the second bathroom featuring balcony access. The upstairs living area leads to another balcony, and the recently-renovated second bathroom features marble benchtops, square basins, a bath, shower and toilet. Additional features include a double garage, under-stair storage, storage loft and reticulated gardens. No wonder they say an Englishman’s home is his castle. ■

Classic home fit for a queen 19th century style in heart of Fremantle. By JANE EVANS FLANKED by undulating lawns with a towering palm tree beside it, this classic Queen Anne early 19th century home has a country homestead feel in the heart of Fremantle. The property spans 945sq m with the residence set back amongst landscaped gardens. A sweeping verandah encloses one-half of the grand red brick façade. “We were attracted to the size of the block,” said one owner. “A giant family home near the ocean and the river...we thought it would be a fun place to bring our son up.” The interior comprises light and spacious rooms with period features such as high, ornate ceilings, gorgeous fireplaces,

antique brass light fittings and wide jarrah floorboards. An arched foyer forms a rich and inviting entrance. There are four bedrooms as well as a study next to the master suite, which could easily be converted into an ensuite bathroom. Across the hallway, an elegant lounge room provides a sophisticated living space for both relaxing and entertaining.

The kitchen is at the rear, with a contemporary fit out, underground cellar and easy access to a rear decked alfresco. The old-world style is blended beautifully with these more modern touches. “I love that the living areas are open but separate,” the owner said. “The home is really spacious and we can have lots and lots of family over comfortably.” In the past, the residence has been executively leased to interstate or overseas doctors from Fremantle Hospital, so the option exists to do the same. Otherwise, this wonderful property awaits a loving family to enjoy all it as to offer. ■

NORTH FREMANTLE 1/1 FREEMAN LOOP

Whole new world of luxury in beachside development. By JANE EVANS WANT to live on Leighton Beach? Well how could you not? Nicely wedged between Cottesloe and Fremantle, with nothing between you and the sparkling waters of the Indian Ocean, Mirvac’s Beachside Leighton complex is the height of luxury. I think what is so alluring about the apartments is their convenient yet ultra exclusive location. If you look one way, you are a two-minute walk to the emerging bar and café scene of North Fremantle, and only a 20-minute train ride from the city. But if you look the other way, it’s all ocean as far as the eye can see. Location aside, beachside Leighton is the epitome of style. Architecturally designed by Singaporean-based Kerry Hill and Fremantle’s Michael Patroni, the exquisitely designed homes blend harmoniously with their coastal environment.

Lap up resort luxuries You’ll find living the good life is easy. By CAROLINE FRANK THIS John Hodgin designed home has a striking Australian resort-style design that will give its new owners the feeling of being permanently on holiday. Built around an award-winning heated pool, all of the lower-level rooms in the four-bedroom home open on to this area, which features poured aggregate concrete surrounds. This double-storey home offers absolute luxury and the enviable position of having only a small reserve between the home and the beach. Once inside, you will be taken with the quality, warmth and liveability the home provides, where you have the option to go for a swim in the morning in the heated pool, enjoying the overhead feature waterfall, and then take an afternoon walk on the beach, which is just off your back doorstep. There are several entertaining areas, with two living areas on the ground floor and an additional living area on the second floor, complete with a second kitchen. The main kitchen features granite

bench tops, soft-touch drawers, high-quality stainless steel appliances and an island counter with more drawers. Glowing marri hardwood floors throughout the entire residence and the stunning multi-tiered high ceilings create a real sense of space and lets in the northern sun. The master bedroom suite, with pool views and direct access to the pool, features a Hollywood-style ensuite with a multi-jet hot tub, heated floors and hisand-her vanities. The second storey houses three enormous bedrooms, all with views and double built-in robes, and there is an upstairs covered balcony with frameless glass fencing to give an unobstructed pool view. Parking is abundant, with a massive turning circle, a double lock-up garage, parking under the bridge and additional parking next to the home for any size boat or caravan. Other features include ducted vacuuming, gas heating, downlights, feature lighting and ceiling fans throughout. â–
