From high-end sailing to selling Agent tells of a glamorous former life. BY CARMELLE WILKINSON CRUISING to some of the world’s most exotic holiday destinations in a multi-milliondollar yacht is a lifestyle most of us can only dream of, but for western suburbs real estate agent Andrew Clarke it was all in a day’s work. Before joining the team at Browne Grove & Associates in Claremont, Andrew followed his other passion in life – sailing. His work began in the south of France, before becoming captain of several large luxury yachts for some of the wealthiest families in the world. “We would charter a yacht for $500,000 (US dollars) a week,’’ he said. “Being one of the most expensive holidays in the world, the clientele would expect the highest possible level of service, and this was always given, with many becoming repeat clients and expressing it was the best time they have ever had in their life. “From there, many clients asked me to arrange a yacht to be built for them, and I built one in Holland for over $100 million
(Australian dollars).” When Andrew is not selling property, he is out on the water in his boat, enjoying time with his family. “Boats are my favourite pastime. I met my wife in Fort Lauderdale on a boat, on our first serious date I cruised with her around Corsica for 10 days on a 32-foot sail boat and my son was conceived on a boat in St Tropez,’’ he said. “My brother and I also have our own business selling the boat brand Luhrs. “Boating is very much a part of my family.” When he’s not out on the water, Andrew is selling real estate in Perth’s most prestigious suburbs. He began his real estate career as a trainee valuer after graduating from Curtin University with a Bachelor of Business degree. “People ask what yachting has to do with real estate, and it’s the highest possible level of service and dealing with some of the wealthiest business people in the world and understanding their expectations,’’ he said. ■

According to Peard Real Estate Group CEO Peter Peard, winter provides a window of opportunity for those wanting to sell their home. “There tends to be less competition from other homeowners who generally wait until spring to sell their property,’’ he said. “This is particularly the case in coastal areas with Peard generally recording a jump of over 20 per cent in listings beginning from October in oceanside suburbs such as Mindarie, Illuka, Hillarys, Sorrento and further south in Rockingham and Mandurah. “Another advantage is that potential buyers who are active in the housing market during winter tend to be more committed and focused on purchasing a new home.” Before putting their home on the market in winter, sellers needed to make sure their home was attractive to potential buyers. “Make sure your gardens are well presented during the winter months because the street appeal of the property is generally a big selling point for a home,’’ he said. “It is a good investment to fertilise your lawns regularly to keep them green and strategically placing plants in the garden which bloom during the winter months. It is also proven that people react more favourably to property shown under bright light than dark, so sellers should maximise the light entering the home, such as having home opens around lunch time and opening all drapes and blinds and turning on lights.” Mr Peard said your home should be also be warm and inviting. “If you have heating in your home make sure that ... the air temperature in the home is at a comfortable level,’’ he said.
