The sweep of the Swan River from the northern bank. The road to a beachside lifestyle at Jindalee
The kings in their castles
Your sea change could be Jindalee
It is difficult to find blocks along the river which have not been subdivided ‘If you live on the river, you are indeed one of the lucky ones CARMELLE SANDER Editor
THERE is no denying that riverfront living is as desirable as winning Lotto. If you are fortunate enough to live on the banks of Perth’s Swan River, you are indeed one of the ‘lucky ones’. Over the last 30 years, a growing number of people have been realising that to own a riverfront property is the ultimate in lifestyle as well as the ultimate investment. In 1980, William Porteous (pictured, top right) sold the most expensive riverfront property in Australia – 64 Jutland Parade, Dalkeith – for the record price of $2.150 million. Since then we have seen the value of such properties increase ten-fold. Nowadays, the most expensive home on the banks of the Swan is a $65 million property at 43 Saunders Street in Mosman Park. Owner Angela Bennett is daughter of the late Peter Wright, business partner of Lang Hancock, the pioneer of WA’s iron ore industry in the 1950s. Set in the most strategic commanding waterfront location on 7567sq m of prime real estate, the residence is sprawled over three levels. It features five bedrooms, four
bathrooms, three powder rooms, gymnasium, steam room, indoor swimming pool, astro-turfed, international-size tennis court, resort-style swimming pool and temperature-controlled wine cellar. Reputable Western Suburbs realtor Porteous has been able to show people very substantial appreciation on their property despite the current downturn in prices. The director of William Porteous Properties International said from the very early days of Perth, landholders appreciated that the river was a precious natural resource and the most beautiful place to build a home for their families and their descendants. “Today, magnificent mansions can be seen along both north and south banks of the river and also on the higher ground just back from the waterfront to take advantage of the spectacular water views,” Mr Porteous said. “Many of these large parcels of land remained in the hands of the same families for generations but have gradually been subdivided and sections sold off as the land became more and more valuable. “A walk along the river beach around Dalkeith and Claremont, or a boat trip down the river will disclose many magnificent homes right on the riverfront. “These properties are accessed via
IF you’re looking for a more affordable oceanside lifestyle, then Jindalee Beachside may well be the sea change for you. Located between Brighton Estate and the ocean, Jindalee is about a 40-minute drive north of the Perth CBD. It provides an alternative way of life for those looking to reside close to the sea but well away from the hustle and bustle of inner-city living. One of the facilities locals can look forward to is the kiosk and picnic areas that the City of Wanneroo began constructing in September of last year. Likened to Clarko Reserve at Trigg Beach, the area will be situated at the end of Jindalee Boulevard and will feature boardwalks and promenades along the foreshore reserve. Satterley Property Group is offering buyers a chance to acquire a prime seaside block of land, which is becoming increasingly difficult to attain in today’s property market. The infrastructure of Jindalee Beachside, along with the area’s cafes, shops and various facilities, will enhance the district’s overall appeal, making it one of the most sought-after modern coastal suburbs in northern Perth. There are various lot sizes up for sale in several estates, starting at $295,000 for a 368sqm block of land. unobtrusive entry gates and are invisible from the roads. “The fortunate owners are able to enjoy complete privacy and unobstructed access to the river front.” Mr Porteous acknowledged it was difficult to find blocks along the river which had not been subdivided, but said when considering the purchase of such property it was important to confirm the exact boundaries and to research the potential for future subdivision, as sometimes the old Title documents didn’t agree with modern council records. “It is also important to ascertain whether the Swan River Trust may be interested in reclaiming a small section of the block on the riverfront,’’ he said. “This sometimes happens as an opportunity presents itself when properties change hands.” Although riverfront properties are tightly held, Mr Porteous said they did become available from time to time but there were no bargains to be had and such properties frequently changed hands without the sale becoming general knowledge. “Astute buyers are always there when such properties come onto the market,’’ he said. “My advice is to speak to an experienced agent who understands the history of riverfront sales and has their finger on the pulse of this very specialised market.” ■

This contemporary home has as much focus on its function as its style, writes ROMENA MANNING WHEN architect and owner David Hillam set out to create this property, he wanted something that had open living spaces and provided plenty of accommodation for his four children. With the design brief fulfilled and a unique aesthetic, the result is a contemporary home with as much focus on its function as in its style. It has large living areas in succession from front to back, and bedrooms are set along two separate wings.
David said he and his wife Joanne liked the elevated position of the block and wanted to take advantage of the northfacing front. He created a large deck alfresco area that overlooks the street and opens from a lounge room through over-height double doors. The alfresco area has an outdoor kitchen with bar fridge, sink and barbecue built-in. Over-height doors and floor-to-ceiling glass is in many areas, with extra high

ceilings in living areas and clean lines and modern accents resulting in an almost warehouse feel. David had highlight windows added to original roofline height, creating light-filled areas as well as integrating indoor and outdoor areas. “The flow of inside and outside spaces moves really well… it’s really good that you can see the pool from the kitchen, from a family point of view,” he said. The galley kitchen, with mostly drawer
storage space, has CaesarStone wraparound tops contrasted by a stainless steel working space around a cooktop. A private courtyard opens at one side of the living area, while at the other a decked alfresco joins a landscaped garden, where a pool with water feature and lighting provides a spectacle from a main bedroom. David said they loved the area as it had shops, cafes and parks nearby, was close to the beach and only a quick and pleasant drive from the city. ■

Wall-to-wall modernity A curved interior wall creates a freeflowing effect from the front to the rear of this residence, reports AMANDA RANKIN IF curves are your thing, then the interior of this innovative, Swanbourne home will get you excited. The standout feature of the house is an amazing curved internal wall of polished concrete that runs through the centre of the home, dividing the space in two. The wall is stunning to look at, softens the interior and creates a free-flowing effect from the front to the rear of the home, designed by Cottesloe architects Blacket Smith. From the first glance, the polished concrete exterior and vast aluminium framed glass doors and window immediately give the impression of innovative modernity. A fun use of glass recurs throughout the house, creating both visually interesting design elements and entry points for natural light and air. Inside, the two-storey property oozes sophistication and
style yet has a feeling of warmth and serenity. On one side of the curved wall is a spacious open-plan living area, which flows from a wall of glass at the front overlooking the pool to a wall of glass at the rear overlooking the back garden. Two sets of aluminium framed double glass doors at each end can be opened to allow the breeze to circulate throughout the home. A stainless workbench, massive square sink and stove top on one side provide ideal conditions in a kitchen, with an ivory CaesarStone bench in the centre. Victorian ash floorboards feature on this side of the house, with random lights along the edge near the curved wall adding a special touch. The second level is all about the parents. Carpeted in plush, 100 per cent charcoal wool, this area includes a versatile living room. A main bedroom has another polished concrete feature wall and floor-to-ceiling glass at the front, with double doors leading to an angular balcony overlooking the pool. Past the walk-in robe is the super stylish bathroom with
quality fittings and a fabulous double shower tiled in chocolate mosaics. Smart wiring, reverse cycle air conditioning and a remote double garage add to the functional features of this elegant family home. â–

Top-quality finish speaks for itself This new unfurnished property has many highlights. By ROMENA MANNING A NEW unfurnished property often relies on only the building’s integrity as its drawcard because there is no furniture to dress it up. Luckily for this house on a 352sqm block, the high level of finish is apparent throughout and is in fact a highlight. Blackbutt flooring is laid from the entrance through to an open living area at the back on the ground floor. From a large portico, the entry has a picture niche and staircase leading to the second storey, with funky pendant
lighting overhead. A powder room in modern décor with floor-to-ceiling tiling makes the most of under-stair space, while the laundry next door has a walk-in linen cupboard. A guest suite on the bottom floor has triple built-in wardrobes and an ensuite. A feature of the open-plan living area is a large kitchen with mocha-coloured high-gloss cupboards, maximising available space from floor to ceiling, and CaesarStone benches with bullnose edging.
Stainless-steel Smeg appliances include dishwasher, wall oven with separate grill and gas-burner hob built into the cabinetry among concealed appliances storage space, double fridge recess, double sinks and a large double pantry, all finished with glass splashbacks. Large windows and a glass sliding door integrate family and dining areas with the outdoors, where a modest, tiled alfresco under the main roof opens to a lowmaintenance landscaped garden. ■

By TANYA MACNAUGHTON THIS luxurious Manning home is an inviting escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The main bedroom has a full-length window, walk-in robe and ensuite featuring twin basin vanity unit, shower, full wall tiling, downlights and separate powder room with second access point from the hallway. Double glass-panel doors at the end of the hallway provide entry to the beautiful open-plan main living zone. Highlights of the kitchen range from granite benches with a breakfast bar, built-in pantry and view of the alfresco dining area, to stainless-steel appliances including dishwasher and gas burners with range hood and splashback. The tiled living room has a raked cedar ceiling and door to the outdoor dining area under the main roof, which is secluded from the elements. Completing the ground floor is the laundry, which has direct access to the double garage. Upstairs is another living area and all three minor bedrooms, two of which are double-sized with a built-in robe and share a semi-ensuite with corner bath. All have a door to either the front or back balcony. The residence has contemporary, neutral-toned décor throughout, ducted reverse cycle airconditioning and an alarm system. SATURDAY MARCH 7, 1PM
DO NOT let a modest facade fool you. Beyond the front door of this rendered ’70s single-level home are surprises galore. The pebbled feature tiles in the entry give the first hint of something different, and then it is surprise after surprise, starting with the fireplace in the lounge room – not just a warmth giver but a showpiece. Although it is a fully functioning gas heater, lighting allows it to be used purely for visual effect. The walls surrounding the fireplace are shelved, mirrored and fitted with down lights to show off treasured ornaments. Two sets of double doors lead off the lounge, leading to a dining room or home office that overlooks a massive timberfloored, sunken entertaining area that is used as a games room and gym. On the upper level of this room, through yet another set of double doors, a home-
theatre room is carpeted, dark and ready for a cinematic escape. The owner is a lover of the outdoors and entertaining because another surprise waits beyond the glass sliding doors of the entertaining area. An enormous Balinese-style gazebo has timber decking and a separate paved area for alfresco dining. The gazebo looks out over a saltwater pool surrounded by tropical plants. A minor bedroom has a glass-tiled feature wall that allows light to enter. Its main bedroom has a walk-in robe and an ensuite. One last surprise lies below the timber deck of the gazebo. It is a two car-underground garage, or storeroom, accessible from a set of stairs at the side of the house. In an elevated position next to the soon-tobe completed Wembley Downs shopping centre, this home really is a surprise package. ■

NAMED after Sir James Stirling’s uncle, Sir Walter Stirling, Point Walter Road, in Bicton, has been the focal point of the lives of many families over the years. Starting at Canning Highway, intersected by Preston Point Road and meandering down to the picturesque Point Walter Reserve, the road holds a lot of hopes, dreams and memories for those who have lived along it in the past, as well as those who call it home today. The street is a combination of new and original homes, with villa complexes more prominent towards the highway end. These filter off the closer you get to the river, where block sizes get bigger and the possibility of a wonderful view increases. Ray and Rene Cressie bought one of the original blocks of land released at the end of the War and started married life by building their dream home in 1949. Their daughter, Paula Harris, said her parents created a nurturing environment for her and her two brothers in the Cressie family home “My father built the home himself and like everyone else, felt the shortages of those times,” she said. “It was a pretty carefree childhood with a lot of time spent down at the river, with swimming lessons during the school holidays. “There was still quite a bit of bushland then and we would walk to Bicton Primary School which was just a couple of blocks away.” Paula left the street in the 1970s when she turned 21 but said that even though most of the families from that time have now moved on, too, the neighbourhood was still a friendly place where everyone knew one another and helped each other when they could. One of these newer families to the road is the Bright family. Rochelle and Clinton made the decision to move from Shelley to Point Walter Road twoand-half years ago with their three young children. Rochelle said they wanted to be closer to the beach and river while at the same time living in
Campbell (4), Annabel (6) and Fletcher (8) Bright.
a house they could renovate that was large enough for their family. Like the Cressie residence, their home was one of the originals too, built in the 1950s and purchased from the original owners. “A large block size was important and the good zoning along the street meant that this
The Cressie family home, one of the road’s original houses
one was kept at a good size with a wide verge,” Rochelle said. “We love that there’s a lot of peppermint trees and other older trees for the kids to hang their swings from and there is just so much birdlife, with the kookaburras in the morning and the ducks that like to swim in our pool.” ■

Hand-woven rugs give magic carpet ride A beautiful rug can add mystique and beauty to any home. By CARMELLE SANDER THERE is something magical about a rug. Whether Aladdin and his flying carpet have anything to do with it or not, there is no denying that a beautifully handwoven rug creates mystique and beauty in any room of the home. Jenny Jones Rugs in Claremont has one of the largest ranges of exclusive rugs from all over the world, including Turkey, Nepal and Pakistan. Owner Jenny Jones developed an interest in rugs whilst living in Turkey with her family in the 1990s. She fell in love with the world of rugs, which included its relationship with the Turkish culture. “We specialise in modern designs and a selection of hand-picked traditional designs. Our modern rugs are mainly sourced from the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal and we use only top-quality, hand-spun Tibetan wool that has retained its lanolin and lustre to produce a piece that
has its own inbuilt Scotchgard ,’’ she said. Jenny travels to the leading world rug fairs and works with her leading producers to create designs in colour ranges that will suit Australian interiors. Her husband Dennis said Jenny had an eye for colour, which enabled her to differentiate from others. “This is easily identifiable in her designs and colour selections,’’ he said. “She works with top-quality, hand-woven rug producers who are leading world trendsetters in design and colour. “This collaboration has enabled her to produce unique one-off designs in the latest fashion colours that are also found in the top hand-woven rugmarkets of North America and Europe.’’ Jenny Jones Rugs also specialises in customdesigned modern rugs, using the expertise of their inhouse design team. This is a complimentary service and involves a home consultation with the client in order to maximise the ability to produce a rug that is reflective of their personality. Once the design has been finalised, the rug is hand-woven
