Burgeoning Burswood Mirvac unveils its latest phase of architect-designed two-storey terrace homes which are offered at $1.225 million apiece, reports CARMELLE SANDER LAST week Mirvac unveiled its latest $1 billion release, The Peninsula Burswood. The seven architect designed two-storey homes are due for completion later this month and present a rare opportunity to buy a new cosmopolitan-style property just minutes from the city. The final touches are now being put on the $1.225 million terrace homes, which are available in a choice of two colour schemes and feature four or three bedrooms, a gallery kitchen, separate living and dining areas, ducted air-
conditioning and an alarm system. Mirvac WA chief executive Evan Campbell said the homes were situated at the heart of The Peninsula Burswood, near the popular Circular Park, restaurant and health club. “Brand new homes rarely become available so close to the CBD and these have the added bonus of being part of a carefully master planned community, with a whole range of amenities right on the doorstep,” he said. Mr Campbell said the homes featured a contemporary design throughout.

Extended first-home buyers grant welcome news, say agents Same terms until September 30 and then a reduced amount until December 31 before being phased out entirely. Potential buyers now have more time to both find a suitable property and organise their mortgage repayments A DECISION by the Federal Government to extend the First Home Owners Boost (FHOB) for a further six months is welcome news for local buyers. The grant, to be extended until December 31, will be reduced by half for the last three months of the extension period. For eligible first homebuyers entering into contracts between July 1, 2009 and September 30, 2009 (inclusive) the FHOB will continue to provide $7000 for the purchase of established homes and $14,000 for the purchase of new homes. This means that including the $7000 First Home Owner’s Grant, until September 30 purchasers of new homes will continue to be eligible for $21,000 of assistance and purchasers of existing homes will continue to be eligible for $14,000 of assistance. From October 1, the FHOB will be halved to $3500 for the purchase of an established home, and $7000 for the purchase of a new home. overall assessment of the property market in their decision to extend the FHOB for another six months. “This decision will benefit the property industry greatly and have tremendous flowon effects to those in the business of servicing the property industry such as solicitors, financiers, valuers, removalists and a range of trade’s people,’’ he said. Mortgage Choice welcomes the FHOB extension and said it should stimulate activity in the building and construction sectors. Local loan consultant for Mortgage Choice Cathy Poole said moves that helped West Australians meet the challenges of property ownership and improve consumer sentiment are to be applauded. “The extended boost to the FHOB will certainly bring a smile to the faces of first homebuyers,’’ she said. “The ABS housing finance figures for March saw loans for the construction of dwellings grow by 13.9 per cent and by 8.8 per cent for the purchase of new dwellings. “This impressive result demonstrates the positive effect that Federal and State government stimulus and incentives have had on the market.’’ ■

LUXURY LIVING The benchmark in bench tops When it comes to the heat of the action, nothing gets more work than the kitchen benchtop. Here are some tips if you’re tossing up the options, writes AMANDA RANKIN
THE bench top is where all the action happens in the kitchen, so when it comes to choosing the best surface, it's best to choose wisely. Wayne Cook of the Alternative Kitchen Company has been designing kitchens and specifying bench tops of all types for nearly 20 years and says that every surface has its own strengths and weaknesses. “I'll give clients advice about what a particular surface is like but it really depends on what look they want,” Mr Cook said. “As a general rule I wouldn't recommend stone for a light coloured surface and I
wouldn't do acrylic in a dark colour.” Formed from volcanic magma, granite has the second highest hardness rating after diamonds and comes in stunning patterns and colours. According to Mr Cook, while granite is strong and durable it is a natural product and can crack from thermal stress so avoid placing hot pots directly on it. Engineered Stone is a mixture of over 90 per cent quartz particles with a nonporous, scratch resistant surface, and re-constituted or engineered stone is a very popular choice. Top brands include Caesar stone and
Silestone and all claim to be stain resistant, heat resistant and extremely durable. Other alternatives include marble, solid timber, stainless steel, laminate and acrylic. “Stainless steel is fantastic and of all the surfaces so far it is the only one you can put a hot pot on,” Mr Cook said. “But stainless steel is not a pristine product, it has to be worked, scratched and scoured. The harder it is worked the better it looks. “Laminate bench tops are still the least expensive and most versatile option available, but laminate is neither heat nor
