Exclusive homes offer luxury by choice

With underfloor heating and extras, the Bespoke Collection promises to ‘revolutionise the luxury home industry’ . By JANE EVANS UNDERFLOOR heating, hidden wine cellars and wood-fire ovens are just some of the features of two luxurious new homes launched by Exclusive Residence this month. The Swanbourne properties, Siam and Santorini, are part of the Bespoke Collection, a limited release of three distinctly different homes. Invited guests enjoyed champagne, food and music at the Derby Street launch. Exclusive Residence spokeswoman June Yap said she believed it was the first time in

Australia that a builder had invested almost $10 million to show clients three very different homes side by side worth over $1.5 million each to replicate. “We are revolutionising the luxury custom home industry with good old-

fashioned cost transparency,” she said. “The Bespoke collection ensures everything is selected and priced and included before the contract is signed. “This is what makes the Bespoke Collection so very different from every other

builder.” Ms Yap said the company had created a range of homes in the $800,000 $1.5m mark, ranging from 350 to 580 square metres that could be built from site works to final furniture placement in under 11 months. ■

Dunsborough property starting to show signs of recovery Increased turnover and price rises over two consecutive quarters underscore that worst of storm may be over AFTER several years of instability, Dunsborough’s property market may be on the rise. Recent statistical surveys by JMW Real Estate reveal that the Dunsborough market is experiencing a recovery. JMW principal Joe White said that in the second quarter of 2009, the average price of an entry level non-fairway block in Dunsborough Lakes recovered to $204,000 from the previous quarter, which showed an average sale price of $189,000. Mr White said this was especially pleasing given that it was

the first time since late 2007 that the market had actually risen for two consecutive quarters, and that the increased level of turnover further underscored the likelihood of a recovery. “While the market correction of 2008 has been disappointing for homeowners, it has also provided a huge opportunity for homeowner aspirants to enter the market as prices were back to levels not seen since January 2006,” he said. Mr White said in spite of property prices falling in 2008, the entry level non-fairway block still experienced a capital

growth of 10.08 per cent compounded in the 15 or so years since Dunsborough Lakes was first released. “Land historically has always been a long term low risk investment, but to still achieve a rate of growth rate in excess of 10 per cent whilst weathering the worst economic collapse since the Wall Street Crash of 1929 shows the stability and resilience of the Dunsborough market,” he said. While cautious about making predictions on the future, Mr White said he remained optimistic about Dunsborough’s property market. ■

Colourful creations made to order Step inside La Maiolica and be transported to a world where colour and beauty abound. By TANYA MACNAUGHTON STEPPING into La Maiolica is a little like entering Aladdin’s Cave, with its treasure trove of Mediterranean-inspired pottery splashing a mix of vibrant colour around the store. Husband and wife potters Gigi and Cate Cosi opened the Fremantle shop on Norfolk Street in 1991 before moving to La Maiolica’s current premises in James Street three years ago. Taking the name from the style of their pottery, Cate said their aim when opening the business was to establish a workshop and gallery in the popular Italian style, where they could not only make beautiful pieces to sell but also create pieces to order.

Tasmanian-born Cate was inspired to become a potter by her art teacher when she was in her teens, and travelled to Europe to enhance her skills before meeting Gigi in Vietri Sul Mare, Italy in 1987. Born and raised in the Amalfi coastal village, Gigi had studied the art of pottery-making from his family, and the couple worked together before taking the adventurous leap and moving to Fremantle in 1990. “We both decided that Fremantle would be a great place to live and work with its Mediterranean climate and immigrant community,” Cate said. “We also felt that no one else was making the maiolica style of pottery, which we knew

so well, and that provided us with the opportunity to do something different.” Sometimes known as tin glaze earthenware, maiolica pottery consists of a red earthenware clay covered in an opaque white glaze. It is then painted with ceramic stains and fired in a kiln to a rich palette of colours including yellows, oranges, blues, greens, pinks and purples. The style originated in Baghdad in the Middle East around the 9th century AD. Cate said the main way maiolica ware was different to other pottery was in the large colour palette available. “When pieces are fired to higher temperatures many of the colours burn out and it is generally a style of pottery with a lot of surface decoration,” she said. “Many people feel they have been transported back to Italy, Spain or Portugal when they see the range and can sometimes

Cate recommended customers hand wash the dinnerware to make it last longer as dishwashers could be very abrasive. She added pieces were not ovenproof and were unsuitable for cooking in the microwave. “When handled with care, the pieces can last many years and have the potential to become family heirlooms,” she said. “And when used outdoors our pieces will never be faded by the sun or weather. “La Maiolica is a place where we listen to beautiful and eclectic music while we enjoy ourselves making fun, colourful and practical pottery in all shapes and sizes.” ■
