I like the coast because I windsurf, run along the beach and swim, thus for me my soul is happiest along the coast. Waking up to the sounds of waves rolling on to a white sandy beach or enjoying a glass of wine on your balcony as you gaze across the Swan River to the shimmering lights of the Perth skyline? Both paint a very pretty picture, but most people in Perth have a preference when it comes to living on the coast or along the banks of the river. Those who live in Cottesloe, North Fremantle, Swanbourne and City Beach are spoilt for choice, with kilometres of pristine beaches on their doorstep. Those who own a riverfront property in suburbs such as Dalkeith, Mosman Park, Crawley and Peppermint Grove enjoy river activities such as boating, sailing, jet skiing, fishing and water skiing all year round. Whether you live along the coast or near the river within the Western Suburbs, you are sitting on prime, sought-after land. According to statistics from REIWA, while there has only been minimal growth in the Western Suburbs this calendar year, it still remains one of the most desirable places to call home. REIWA president Rob Druitt said that up until about the 1970s most people wanted to live near the river. “From the 70s on, more people wanted the coast, thus City Beach (among others), came into existence,” he said. “And as we have seen in areas outside of the Western Suburbs, the coast has really taken off over the last decade, north to Quinns Rock and South to Rockingham. “Of course, being along the river also means being closer to the city and that for many people is a greater advantage.” The Property Exchange director Janey Sanderson said that more often than not, if you lived near the river, you were within walking distance to good cafes, restaurants and nightlife. “Apart from the nightlife, there is great shopping in areas close to the city,” she said. She also praised its public transport benefits.

Coast or Swan? River I’d choose, any day, to live along the banks of Perth’s picturesque Swan River, as opposed to the ocean. Depending on where you are, let’s say, close to the city, you have the most spectacular views across the river which remain magnificent at night, as well as during the day. Views across the ocean are not the most interesting at night. You do not have the howling southerlies and south westerlies that restrict outdoor living and entertaining. We love to visit them but when it comes to choosing where to live the Swan is definitely my preferred choice. However, there were a few gripes with living near the Indian Ocean for a few agents, such as howling south westerlies, garden and maintenance woes and the glare from the sun. It is near-impossible to speak about Marine Parade without mentioning the landmark Indiana Tea House, named after the original built in
