The first stage of a chicken's life cycle is the egg. The baby chick pushes its way out of the egg and his fathers are wet. Every chicken starts its life in side of a egg the hard egg shell protects the embryo inside. An embryo is an undeveloped chicken that eats it.

It is strong enough to brake through the egg. It uses its egg tooth to brake the shell. When it hatches its egg tooth falls off its beak inside. An embryo starts out very small but soon grows a heart. It eats the egg yolk to grow. In about 20 days the chick is big enough to break out of the egg.

Now the birds are adults. The males are called roosters. The females are called hens. the adults live in groups called flocks. Each has one rooster and 12 to 15 hens. The flock lives eats and sleeps together. They roost above the ground together. When they sleep it keeps them safe from predators. At four months old hens can lay eggs. To make chicks a rooster and a hen mate.

Chickens do not see well at night. To keep safe, they sleep in houses called chicken coops. At night they roost, or sleep standing up. They hold on to perches with their feet.
