First Stage -Egg The first stage of a penguin's life cycle is called a egg. Many penguins make nest for the egg. Penguins nest close together in a large colony. ( community of animals living close together) Penguins lay 2 or 1 eggs. A large penguins skin covers the egg. The mother penguin and the father penguin take turns keeping there egg warm. The parent that is not sitting on the egg gets food.

Stage Two - Chick

The second stage of a penguin life cycle is a Chick! A chick uses its egg tooth to crack its shell. (Egg tooth is a small, sharp, tooth that takes about 3 days for a chick to come out of its egg.) Egg tooth fall off a couple weeks after chick hatches. New born chick have thin feathers. These feathers keep the chicks warm. Parents feed chicks fish and krill. Chicks can’t swim so there parents get chicks food. Parents save food in there stomach They put the food inside the chicks mouth

Stage Three - Teenager Penguin chicks fledge when they lose their down feathers and they grow larger ones. The new ones are waterproof and help them swim better. Some penguins will shed their feathers once before growing adult feathers. There parents stop feeding them when they grow there waterproof feather. Young penguins are not taught to catch fish or swim

Stage Four - Adult Penguin Emperor penguins can grow up to 3 to 4 feet tall! There body is build for hunting underwater. As spring arrives, the penguin parents leave for the sea. Penguins spend half their time in water and the other half on land.

How A Penguin Survives What Does A Penguin Eat? Penguins eat squid, small shrimp, fish and krill.

Where Penguins Live Some penguins live below the equator. Most penguins live around Antarctica. Penguins could live in warmer places too.

How a Penguin Protects Itself The color of the penguin's feathers helps them to avoid being spot by predators when they are underwater. When penguins are on the icy land they can’t run away or fly away so they slide on their bellies.
