How a Polar Bear Survives


STAGE ONE: NEWBORN When newborn polar bears are born, they are about 30 to 35cm in length to 12 to14 inches and almost half a kilogram in weight.When a cub is born they have short fur, no teeth and they are completely blind. The cubs grow very fast due to its mother's fat rich milk which contains about 31 grams of fat . The mother nurses its cubs for 20 months .The mother gives birth to 3 cubs at a time. The mother stays with its cubs until the end of March or start of April.

STAGE TWO: CUB The mother polar bear and her cubs come out of their den in the end of March or early April. During this stage the mother teaches the cubs how to live in the Arctic. The cubs are ready to move with their mother towards sea ice. This is where the mother will hunt seals for the family.


STAGE THREE: ADOLESCENT The Adolescent stays with its mother for 30 to 36 months . During this period they learn how to feed themselves. They learn to swim, how to hunt and survive on their own. When the cubs reach ages 6 to 10 years old, then it's time to leave their mother.


STAGE FOUR: SUBADULT The Subadult bears begin to survive on their own. Female Subadults are ready to mate between the ages of 4 to 6 years old.While the Subadult male polar bear is sexually mature around the ages of 6 to 10 years old.


STAGE FIVE: ADULT After the polar bears give birth, the female polar bears feed themselves all summer.They start building their den before winter.The mother gives birth to its cubs and nurses them until march or early April.


How Does a Polar Bear Survive What A Polar Bear Eats Polar bears are carnivores. They eat seals, whales, walrus, narwhals and brown head whales.

How Does a Polar Bear Live Polar bears live in the Arctic. Polar bears eat snow to get water. They sleep seven to eight hours. When a bad storm comes, they dig a den and curl up. Polar bears live 20 to 30 years.

The shoulder height of a polar bear is about 122 to 160 cm. Polar bears are the largest carnivores that live on land. Polar bears use sea ice as a platform to hunt. Male polar bears can weigh up to 680 kilograms or 1,322 lbs.
