Letter from the Editor "It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire." This statement reveals recent F. Scott Fitzgerald’s view on this eventful decade known as “The Roaring Twenties”. This is when the hopes for attaining the American Dream are at their maximum. Nowadays, women are gaining more freedom and independence. African Americans are more recognized by their talents. For the first time in the United States, a majority of Americans live in cities. Young Americans in the nation's teeming cities reject the traditional social mores by embracing a modern urban culture of freedom.

This month’s issue of the magazine will tell you how fashion is becoming an important aspect in the US life, and how the lives of women and African Americans are changing. People are using fashion to say something about who they are and what social group they belong to. Women are asserting their independence and modernity by rebelling against traditionals conventions of feminine behavior and dress. These women are called flappers and they are symbols of freedom. African Americans are more recognized for their talents now, and they think it will only get better.

Our featured article for this month is about the new youth culture. You’ll read about how the 1920s became a modern age and why it’s called that. The increase of the deep tensions between the traditionalists and modernists and why it’s significant. You’ll also read about the clashes over new youth culture; dancing, clothes, music, and media. Furthermore, you’ll find out what the adults (traditionalists) thought about the new youth culture and the changes that had been brought to the US in the 1920s. Lastly, you’ll read more deeply about how adults used censorship, legislation, and hope as ways to stop youth from acting out. The featured article presents finding reported by a committee formed to investigate the current situation of the youth-adult clash. Some members interviewed women about their satisfaction. Reporters and situation analysis is presented. The committee presents the problem of the current clash. Different life aspects such as music and media in lieu of the clash are presented. Sincerely, Sama Jwaied

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Your Oct 10 cover story, "Urban Life is The Duck’s Quack" did a great job of bringing people in America up to date on the most informative facts why people should think of moving to the cities. Who would want to keep working before sunrise until sunset for a limited income? Isn’t it a better option to be working in your area of expertise for a higher wage? I believe most people prefer to work according to their education. Urban area is the area of chances for people looking for decent jobs. In addition, the wide range of cultural facilities available in cities supports a wide range of educated people. Moreover, would you like your child to walk five miles everyday to reach to a distant school? Would you like to be raised in an area where new ideas and ways of behaving are often viewed with suspicion? Isn’t it easier for you to live in a diverse community where you can do anything you like without being judged by others as immoral. The fact that the urban life have special opportunities and services for women is worth considering. Which lady prefers to be the dumbdora and walk two hours to the river to haul water for the family? How about having more freedom in clothing (wearing short clothes that shows their stilts), going to petting pantry and go out in public? How about the right to vote? In rural areas flappers who have the hush money may not be allowed to express their goofy feeling about a guy, while in cities flappers could go with whoever they want and go for egg harbor. I believe benefits in the urban cities outweighs those in the rural areas. I understand that any change is hard, but there should be a good point where women can decide that they want to live for themselves. The apparent excitement and glamour of urban life makes it the real Duck’s Quack. Sincerely, Sama Jwaied

Dear Editor, Flappers are the high profile girls. They are the modern women of the twenties. As time is passing flaps begin to go way advance from hair to clothes to shoes. They’ re starting to wear short skirts, which are smaller and smaller. Their hair is starting to get short and they cut it into bob hairstyle which give them a boyish kind of look. Flaps wear A LOT of make up. They are beginning to smoke in the public. Women are beginning to appear in advertisements. Smoking gave women a modern look as they say. Even going to tea dances made flappers "modern". Flappers like to think of themselves as a rebel. By flaps flirting and giving men sexual symbols gave them an older attitude to their peers. Flapper are carefree. They don't really care what people think. They see it as them being themselves. In the future flappers will become vanish. Homes started to become smaller. Houses are coming with electricity, indoor plumbing, central heat, and most of them are coming with a garage. House are going from $500 to $10,000. Smaller homes are a trend in the twenties. Sincerely, Jordan Mack

Letters to the Editor Dear editor, I don’t agree with the 18th Amendment. No one is even obeying the law anyways. I support overturning the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act. The reason why the Amendment and the Act are passed is because they might do stupid things that they might regret later. But at the same time I agree because sometimes people need to drink because they have been stressed out buts. What was the whole point of 13th amendment if they were not going to follow it. Congress has sent the law to the states for the ratification of it. The law should be obeyed…..that it was like illegal to make alcohol and there was another big loophole as well as the others that have been passed. Alcohol is not recommended by doctors. But people would drink it almost all the time. It is starting to affect people so that a lot of them think alcohol should be illegal and they think people could be better and work a lot better without it. So I think alcohol should be illegal because it will affect people later on. The 18 Amendment said that people shouldn’t have alcohol because that is like passing the law like they should make it illegal and that it says people should drink it and that they believe to many Americans had drinking problems and that they were not fine with it because people would get in problems when they drink. I agree and disagree at the same time because it’s ok to drink little of alcohol but not drink a lot that can get yourself into problems. Sincerely, Evelyn Lopez

Dear Editor, I think America was all balled up before they introduced prohibition. Then, January 17, 1920, they finally commenced it. I thought it is the bee’s knees at first, a lot of people did. Now, however, if you look around you’ll notice that it ain’t exactly what our dear Uncle Sam envisioned. You got armed caper, gangsters, armored cars, beer transports being hijacked. Now I’m starting to think alcohol might of been the best thing, but the prohibition still has it’s advantages and disadvantages. It helps people break bad habits, creates a good, hard-working man to provide for his family, but that's about it for advantages and the wets even find ways around that. They get so desperate they are sneaking cargo ships with whisky in them, robbing beer-truck transports, they would die if they had a dead soldier. We thought this was a win in moral health issues, but it’s never been so bad before. Just about every car where I live has a banner to, apparently, proclaim their sentiments. Now I hear rumors about Speakeasies, illegal pubs, secret doors with peep holes; hide away lounges hidden within or in back of different businesses and all that. I hope you will take into understanding what I have to say and will publish an article in your paper. How much more can we take? Sincerely, Tyler Olney

Letters to the Editor Dear editor, When the Tennessee legislature made it illegal to teach Darwin’s theory of evolution in public schools in 1925, I was absolutely outraged! The theory of evolution is a crucial topic in the subject of biology. As John Scopes, who is against the new antievolution law, has pointed out, biology cannot be taught without teaching evolution. The theory of evolution states that humans have evolved from lower animals over millions of years, but many fundamentalist Christians argue that the Bible says that God created man in a single day, so Darwin must be incorrect. They believe in a very strict interpretation of the Bible and think that belief in the theory could cause social, moral, and spiritual problems. Traditionalists take the side of creationism, which is the belief that God created the universe as stated in the Bible. They should keep an open mind and follow in the example of modernists. I'm not saying that they can't be religious. I am merely suggesting that they should accept the concepts of natural selection and evolution and come to terms with the fact that religion and science can coexist. In my opinion, evolution shows the progression of organisms over time and freedom of speech is protected by the first amendment, allowing people to teach others about this theory. The Scopes trial is definitely necessary for this controversial topic. It involves a science teacher named John Scopes, who was willing to teach a lesson on evolution despite the new law. It is so courageous of him to stand up for what he believes in. He is the frog’s eyebrows!

John T. Scopes

The trial defines the debate over science and religion and shows how silly the new law is while attracting public attention to Dayton. The national press is extremely pro-evolution. Shouldn't that help prove that this topic is worth discussing in the classroom? Their stories ridicule William Jennings Bryan and rightly so. He is a devout Christian and is defending the anti-evolution law in the case. Bryan is considered the national leader of anti-evolutionists and attacks the theory on various occasions. I, myself, consider him a mustard plaster. Thankfully, Charles Darrow is pro-evolution and is fighting Bryan’s attacks. It is just berries that George Rappleyea staged the criminal persecution of Scopes. He is also on the right side; the proevolution side. This trial is a great way to boost the economy in our small town of Dayton. Journalists refer to the trial as “the monkey trial” because it involves the controversial topic of whether humans evolved from monkeys. Monkeys are being brought to Dayton for people to see. It is just the cat’s pajamas that this trial is providing a way to promote a declining economy. In my opinion, the beliefs of any church should not dominate public education. The first amendment of the U.S.Constitution protects our freedom of speech and we should be able to speak and teach others about this theory. This new antievolution law is blaah and people need to realize and understand that the theory of evolution provides scientific proof of the progression of organisms over time and that people should have the freedom to discuss the topic under any given circumstances. Sincerely. Arielle Comellas

Politics By Tyler Olney

The controversy is boiling and the arguments are heating up. All over the U.S. conflict has been stirring up, especially in major cities. Citizens all over are claiming that the people at the White House are too balled up and the big cheese in the oval office should step down. We could on and on about the controversy, but we will keep it neat and short. One example of why citizens are complaining about the public is the prohibition act. The recently commenced law that dictates any person in the U.S. caught consuming alcohol shall receive a hefty punishment. War rages on about prohibition, and what does the government do about it? They sit there at the White House, conducting studies on their “experiment.”

But let’s switch over to the big cheese. We heard Harding likes the pomp, the ceremony, the attention, and the glitter of the office. But continuing labor strife, protracted wrangling with Congress, squabbling over patronage, mounting Prohibition enforcement problems, concern over the fall election reserves, and the need for constant executive decisions-in short, the magnitude of his presidential responsibilitiesoverwhelms him. Not to mention the speeches he’s given at press-conferences, complaining “there is no human being that could do what I could” and “people think it’s a fine to be president, but I know better.” Warren G. Harding truly is a notorious and balled up man. In conclusion we hope we will get a president who won’t perform as many scandals as the mafia has committed armed caper.

Society On Fire By Sama Jwaied After WWI society tensions have increased dramatically. The increase in intolerance and hostility toward people that don’t fit a white results in creation of the society tensions. For example, restrictive immigration laws are being enacted, religious tensions are growing, radicals and foreigners are persecuted, and the ku klux klan is growing everyday. To begin with, the Ku Klux Klan has been recreated in 1915 by Edward Clark in Atlanta, Georgia. The klan is established because of the fear and hostility of whites when blacks and non-Protestant countries immigrated to the US. The Klan takes its name from an organization originally formed following the Civil War. It also adopts its costumes from an earlier group. The Klan is spreading from the South to all parts of the country. It’s growing rapidly in rural areas and small towns in the South, Midwest, and West. It claims over 4 million members of the 48 states, and adds Africans Americans, immigrants, Catholics, and Jews as subjects of tolerance. The ku Klux klan has some constitutional objectives. It’s first objective is to unite white males and native born citizens of the US. Secondly, to shield the holiness of home and the purity of womanhood. Thirdly, to maintain forever white supremacy. Lastly, to maintain American values.

Ku Klux Klan Movement Additionally, Congress responded to anti-immigrant pressure by enacting the immigration laws that restricted immigration. A quota system also limits the number of immigrants from non-Protestant countries. It also states that immigration shall be scientifically matched to the US radical bloodstream. Just recently, in 1921, Congress enacted the Emergency Immigration Act. This new law caps the number of people allowed into the country each year at 375,000. It also sets the quota at 3% of the US population in 1910. The year 1910 is chosen because it was after the year that immigration had dramatically increased. Nowadays, the Congress enacts the Immigration Act of 1924. This law reduces the number of immigrants allowed into the US to 164,000 each year. It reduces the quota to 2% of the US population of 1890. By moving the date further back, the immigration from southern and eastern Europe had decreased because that was a time when most immigrants came from northern Europe. Lastly, the anti-semitism is prejudice against Jews. For example, many landlords refuse to rent to Jewish tenants. Furthermore, private schools and universities limits or excludes Jewish students. Therefore, Jewish fall victims to the 1920s wave of intolerance toward nonProtestants.

Economy- The Booming Age! By: Arielle Comellas It is the roaring 1920s and the economy is booming! It has been about three years since the awful recession that occurred after the war has ended. Businesses are becoming the new obsession across the nation. Production is rising, corporate profits are becoming higher, and income is increasing. Isn’t this just the bee’s knees? Many new products as well as new technology are being produced. People are participating more and more in the stock market each and everyday. It’s so exciting! I think it’s appropriate to say it's the cat’s meow! There is a production of numerous new products across the nation. There are many “must have” items such as radios, electric refrigerators, and improved models of standard items. These include faster cars, shinier bathroom fixtures, and plusher caskets! As of right now, the production of the radio is the biggest success. After all, the increased availability of free home entertainment has created a high demand for this incredible new product. Competition is also increasing as new products are being created. Different businesses want to sell their goods, therefore creating competition amongst each other. The expansion of businesses is becoming extremely popular. Some are even merging in a process called business consolidation. The economy is dominated by large corporations. Almost half of our nation’ s corporate wealth belongs to two hundred of the largest corporations. Many businesses are also running more efficiently. Manufacturers are able to gain huge sums of money for expansion due to new techniques of mass production. A great company that is currently running very

efficiently is the U.S. Steel Company. It has hired seventeen thousand more workers, increased wages, reduced the workday from twelve hours to eight hours, while still managing to increase profits. Isn’t that amazing? With new technology increasing productivity as well, the same number of workers creating one hundred radios in one day can create one hundred and seventy radios in one day. Technology has allowed a fifty percent increase in productivity. Workers are using electric-powered machines and assembly lines more often in order to allow this to happen, which leads me to my next point. Henry Ford is responsible for designing the ingenious invention known as the assembly line. As a result of the moving assembly line, production time of products is able to be cut down from fourteen hours to six hours. He has transformed the automobile from a luxurious item to a good all consumers can enjoy. He has reduced the price of cars from nine hundred and fifty dollars to less than two hundred and ninety dollars. The airplane has also been transformed into a method of transportation. Who would have thought that the airplane would have ever become a vehicle? I sure didn’t! Many new products are being created to make life easier. These include electric vacuum cleaners, powered washing machines, and pop-up toasters. Can you believe how far we have come since the war?

Henry Ford Assembly Line

Economy- The Booming Age! Continued Numerous workers are prospering as well. They are benefitting from all of these activities and enjoying a higher standard of living. Their savings and life insurance are doubling, prices are stable, and there is a growth of chain stores. The cost of products are also decreasing. The cost of manufactured goods are being reduced as a result of improvements in technology and mass production as well. Therefore, consumers are able to save more. However, as prices decrease, people are becoming tempted to buy more products as soon as they are released. After all, installment buying is the next new thing! Many consumers are beginning to use installment buying to obtain new products. This is a process in which a buyer makes a down payment on the good they wish to purchase. The seller loans the rest of the price after the down payment to the buyer and the buyer pays back the loan in monthly installments. Unsuccessfully making the payments can result in the loss of the product. The seller can reclaim it if he or she wishes to do so. This is an exciting new way to obtain the latest products by buying them now and actually paying for them later. Another way to consider purchasing the latest and the greatest products is through credit. This is an arrangement for purchasing products at the current moment with borrowed money and paying off the loan as time progresses. Think of it as easy little payments! Buying the latest model, even if you dont need it, is a sign of prestige and these are two incredible options to help you achieve that status.

People are also becoming more involved with the stock market. The prices of stocks are increasing tremendously with many more than doubling in price. More than one and a half million Americans are involved in the market and people believe that businesses will provide an increasing share of expanding prosperity. Wishful thinking is the way of life nowadays. We are excited consumers, eager to purchase goods! It is unpatriotic to refrain from participating in purchases. Boosters are also playing a large role in businesses. They are organizations that increase the interests of local businesses. They look for different ways to protect them from national chain stores. They also work in charitable organizations, including Boy Scouts. People often make fun of boosters because of their old-fashioned ways of thinking and acting. They are often businessmen that belong to the Chamber of Commerce, the Lions, the Rotary, the Kiwanis, and the Elks. They are trying to capture the interests of local companies. In conclusion, the United States is a consumer culture, meaning it believes that the consumption of large amounts of goods benefits the economy as well as personal happiness. Businesses are expanding, production is increasing, and new advances in technology are being made. Workers are benefiting from the improvements in technology, new products are being created to make life easier, and goods can be purchased through easy little payments at a time. This is an incredible age in time where the economy is skyrocketing. I can’t wait to see what is in store for us in the years to come! More ritzy products I hope!

Feature Article: The Clash of Two Incredible Generations! (The New Youth Culture) A clash between youth and adults is beginning to occur. We are moving into the modern age. Isn’t it exciting? Think of all the new experiences we will have! New haircuts, clothing, music, media… what more could we ask for? The lives we have grown accustomed to are being transformed by allowing us to encounter more lively and thrilling experiences! Modernists! It is the age where women are standing up for themselves and bringing a new style to our world. For women, life previously consisted of boiling a stew and getting on your knees and scrubbing the floor with a toothbrush. We all know that far too well. Now, however, it is NOT the same. It’s the new age! This is the age of the modern women, where they do what they please whenever they wish to do so. The men don’t have any control and the possibilities are endless! However, even the men have changed a bit as well. Now, don’t misunderstand. Not every woman agrees with the modern age. We still have some traditionalists roaming these mean streets. They complain about the new generation and insist that it is too wild and just out of control. They are using censorship, legislation, and hope to prevent women from acting “wild”. They are trying to prohibit the use of books that adults view as immoral. They are also trying to pass laws to discourage women from wearing short skirts. They are praying that the young girls will change as well. Before this new age, women had to speak formally, be purist in regards to adaptations, and spend their whole lives like a linear story. Yes, the previous age was definitely more in control, but besides all the small things, it lacks an extremely important factor. Can you guess what this age has that the previous didn’t? Freedom! As we already know, with WWI having reached its end, more than half of the US population doesn’t want to return to the pre war lifestyle. As a result, many people are setting new trends and trying new things. For

slick back their hair and wear fashionable clothes including loose, flannel pants, and long raccoon coats. New culture is being introduced and incorporated into our society! Many exciting new dances are being created for the enjoyment of the people. These include dances such as the shimmy, charleston, and the foxtrot! The shimmy is a very enjoyable dance because it allows you to shake and jiggle! Who doesn’t like to do that? Another dance involves the crossing of your hands and knees. This is a fast dance known as the Charleston. The foxtrot dance, which numerous people have probably heard of, involves a couple. It is very similar to the waltz in the sense that it is smooth and involves a partner. The new wild and energetic forms of dance are beginning to represent the upcoming wild and modern generation! Dance marathons are becoming quite the rage these days! Winners of the marathons receive various prizes! Wouldn’t it be just berries to win a dance marathon? I mean, who wouldn’t want a prize? Of course, you have to complete certain tasks such as keeping your feet in a certain position for the longest amount of time and having the best dancing skills. You can even slow dance if you wish! Most marathons last for three weeks! Doesn’t that sound like an incredible way to spend your time?

Flappers

Feature Article: The Clash of Two Incredible Generations! (New Youth Culture) Continued A new group of women is beginning to emerge as well! They are known as flappers, or young women who want to live more liberated and modern lives. They are shortening their skirts, bobbing their hair and enhancing their faces with makeup. They are wearing short, loose-fitting dresses as well as simple, straight dresses, with kneelength skirts. They are also flattening their chest with cloth bindings to make themselves look young and innocent. The media industry is booming too! The radio is playing a huge role in the media business, with it being the top home leisure activity. The radio also has a big impact on the popular culture. Listening to the radio allows people to use their imagination and enjoy themselves. Five thousand Americans currently have radio receivers. Radio stations are in the process of becoming big across the country. Ninety percent of Americans own a minimum of at least one radio. The radio is just like movies! It is a great escape for Americans. This invention does more than just provide entertainment to people. It allows them to escape from their problems and use their creativity. Jazz music is becoming more and more popular each and every day. It isn’t a new form of music, but it is beginning to represent wild and carefree actions as a result of its exciting rhythms and sounds. It is a lively form of music and has many unique characteristics. These include swing, syncopation, improvisation, bent notes, and distinctive voices. The exciting rhythm you

hear that makes you want to sway, dance, and snap is known as swing. Syncopation makes the music unexpected by placing different beats in unusual places. Jazz musicians also improvise, meaning they don’t play the music exactly as it was written. They change the melody and other components of the songs. Jazz players incorporate bent notes in their music, meaning they play notes that can’t be created on the piano. They use various instruments, including guitars, saxophones, trombones, and more! They also use distinctive voices, which helps give jazz music a sense of mystery that listeners can enjoy. Jazz music is also extremely individualized. Different musicians use their own tone and put their own style on different songs. Many musicians are becoming popular because of their outstanding and unique voices! Think of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and Cab Calloway! Wouldn’t it be incredible to meet them some day? Paul Whiteman’s orchestra and Bix Beiderbecke's dance band are becoming big hits as well. Jazz blues singers such as Bessie Smith and Lena Horne keep proving themselves with their incredible distinctive voices. Billie Holiday is also an amazing artist who began singing in Harlem jazz clubs as a teenager. Jelly Roll Blues claims that he invented jazz, but that’s silly because no one person could really have invented this form of music. However, he has created some of the first jazz songs. His piece, “Jelly Roll Blues” is at the top of the ratings! Jazz represents a more popular and modern culture! The clash between youths and adults is significant because it is allowing the transition from one generation to the next. This new, modern age is full of thrilling and exciting experiences that are the cat’s meow! Youngsters have access to movies, magazines, and cars that adults didn’t necessarily have in their time. They are bringing the modern age of excitement into our world!

Entertainment By Jordan Mack

Entertainment is the evolution of the arts into uniquely American forms. Radios is a very huge thing especially in the entertainment business. " Ain't we got fun" reflected the growing of the American public. Radio is the influential form of communication. Radios played on gramophones will be different in the future. One third of the population listens to music from the radio at home. Large tents would be put up to muffle the sound at live concerts. Broadcast radio shows began to prosper also. Radio quickly fueled an interest in national sports teams. All radio broadcaster are starting to find profit into sports shows. Sports shows are becoming big especially in July, 1921. Sports is an inexhaustible source of programming, radio helped bring sports into the spotlight. People would always find time to listen to the radio about sports and the scores. People are seeing the emergence of Jazz as a new form of music. New Orleans is the developer of Jazz. Jazz is spreading North with the migration of blacks. Jazz clubs are flourishing now, in big cities. "Jazz isn't music merely, it is a spirit that can express itself in almost anything." Jazz is different from other kinds of music.

Whites were responsible for attaching the name jazz to African roots. Black found it hard to bring jazz to white listeners. Blacks viewed jazz as an occasion for collected celebration. African Americans are challenging the widespread use of jazz. Broadway musicals are popular entertainments now. Broadway is becoming nationally popular. Broadway is offering more serious fare to playgoers. Broadway musicals are starting a powerful movement these days. Radio is quickly fueling an interest in national sports teams. All radio broadcaster are starting to find profit into sports shows. Sports shows are becoming big in July, 1921. Sports are an inexhaustible source of programming, radio is helping bring sports into the spotlight. People would always find time to listen to the radio about sports and the scores.

Sports By Evelyn Lopez Throughout the 1920’s basketball is becoming more and more popular sport and anatuer too and they’re playing basketball on college campuses. Basketball is not a star to rival those in the college that are playing football and no team dominated the sport. They don’t have professional or college teams but they have the AfricanAmericans players. Usually the celtic won at least well about 90% of their games they played. And so the team don’t have any league in which for them to play. There is a guy called Jack Dempsey and he is the most compelling boxer in these days. Boxing is becoming very popular. Also, there is another guy called Tex Richard and he is the 1st one to have a boxing match to draw $81 million at the gate. When Dempsey Tunney fought at the gate he topped over $2.6 million, his record was $990,495. People are starting to learn how to fight, boxing and it just started to become popular after people are becoming more interested in it. During the 1920s, the popularity of college football sky are reaching to dizzying heights. Schools are starting to concrete huge steel and concrete stadiums which seated about 17 thousand or more cheering students and football diehard. Pro football is a disorganize, disreputable enterprise. Most teams lasted a season or two before folding and are like in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Chicago.

Baseball in the 1920s In the 1920’s, Bill Tilden became the first tennis player to earn the national renown. Also women dominated this sport. Women players are modestly playing in long often heavy dresses. Among her accomplishments were 5 straight wimbledon titles. They have to wear clothing up to there ankles and to their arms to swim. I think that is really crazy. Baseball should be regulated. The supreme court decreed that baseball is exempt from federal antitrust laws, and the ruling has challenged several times over the decades, and for football they need legal protection.
