How have tradition and modernism clashed with the 1920’s

Modernism shaped the generations to come. Jobs, fashion preference and overall outlook on the younger generation changed.

with. Young women moved away from home quicker, they became independent quickly and had got jobs in retail stores and law offices.

Modernism formed the new women by the way they dressed and their standards were lowered compared to their mothers. They started to have jobs outside of their home, factory jobs were now for the immigrants and lower class. Overall America’s values took a turn during the 1920s. School became kids “job” rather than working for the family business or staying home. The movies became censored for the young eye in effort to blind the acknowledgement of sexual activity at a younger age. The younger age started wearing less and go out more. The younger generation of women started to lose the value of their families approval of their significant other and fashion choices. Women had started to move into the city without having a significant other to live Picture of a flapperdancing

Gibson Girls Long Gone Where have all the Gibson Girls gone? By: Sydni Von Sperecken

Women’s clothing and appearance changed in many ways compared to their mothers appearance or any gibson girl. Dresses got shorter, from ankle to knee. The collars of dresses went from neck to chest.Rather than the Gibson girls, women wore no corset, no stiff reconstructive undergarments and few layers of heavy clothing compared to their mother. Because of the change in clothing young women changed more about their appearance, their hair was now short, bob like.( show picture). Women are beginning to wear make up, being called cake face due to the amount of change on the woman’s face. Women explored a new life along with a new variety of jobs, instead of working in factories they worked in banks, retail stores and law offices. Factory jobs were now for the poor people. Even though women had a better job environment, they were only offered the lowest job position that the company had and they were rarely offered any opportunity for a promotion. The better job environment gave women the sense of freedom and independence that a man would have had in his job, because of this independence women began having more freedom, living in their own apartments while paying for ll living expenses, in other words no longer needing a man to do the bills and work while she stayed home. The young women was now seen in speakeasy after work if she lived in a big city, you'd see her smoking and drinking.

Sexual boundaries were forgotten when the gibson girls disappeared. Young adults were becoming sexual active before they got married which is when their parents waited till. The higher the women’s education and the more wealthy they were they were more likely to be offered Birth Control. Giving women a safe net for being protected against having children. Due to having Birth Control available to women, the divorce rate rose. People called watch dogs preached to women that were sexually active for the reasons other than reproduction, that sex was for reproduction only not for your own purpose.

She´s a Flapper, Should I Slap Her? Is new women's fashion a threat to American values? By: Rylee Fay Do you think new women's fashion is a threat to American values? Many older women and older generations think yes, but why? These women are expressing their creativity and freedom. What's wrong with that? The new women of 1920s are the new women of this century and are going to influence the future women. Women's ways are changing and they were very different from the way they dressed and the way they did things but it that really that bad for society? Is expressing girls/women's freedom that bad? Should this even be a question or even thought about? Yes, women's fashion and the way they do things are going against tradition but they are expressing their freedom and inspiring creativity with how they dressed. Women's freedom expressed their personalities. The things they chose to wear expressed their personalities, that's what these women want. Older generations saw it as embarrassing and a disgrace to the world. But these women want to be different and don't want to worry about what others think of them. Why do you older women think younger couples relationships are so “inappropriate” why are they so “embarrassing”? Because they are more sexual? Women are going out a lot more, not caring about being respected by men. But they didn't care. They are expressing their feelings towards men and feel like showing them how they are feeling. These older women see new relationships as they aren't supposed to be sexual and the couples should never be left alone. And they aren't supposed to be sexual until they are married. Younger women were expressing their feelings in a relationship and there is nothing with showing the people they like that.

Younger women are excited they can finally have more freedom and they could do things that the older women couldn't when they were that age. These Women want to branch out. “They were no longer their husbands wives or their children's mother, they were themselves.” These women are very happy because they are finally getting their equal rights. But people weren't used to women's rights yet, which is very dumb considering when older women first changed their traditions and made new ones they were probably just as happy as the women who are making history today. But women were finally changing into being themselves. I understand how these new ideas of life are threatening to some people, but these women are just trying to be themselves and are using their freedom in creative ways. People shouldn't be threatened by these new ways because it isn't harming anyone, it is just change, and change is ok. I feel as if these new ideas and fashions are going to influence further generations.

The Times They Are A Changin’ Are the cultural values of cities good for America? By: Brylee Klosterman

People are continuously moving to our American cities, such as New York. Moving from farms to the cities, or immigrants from Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Our cities are developing more cultural values, which isn’t necessarily a gruesome thing. We city dwellers have more opportunity and can express ourselves in ways that we haven’t been able to before. Usually we would get judged for not doing the norm. Things like gambling, drinking or even going on casual dates are now not seen as different. We can now buy and read endless amounts of newspapers and magazines. City dwellers can now also meet people from different cultures, go to movies, visit museums, and attend concerts. Cities aren’t the only ones gaining new points of view, but people in the countryside have been, and are still being exposed to new music, ideas, and social values everyday. Before now, if we were to do any of these new things, people may have not accepted us because it was never the normal things to do.

The cities, such as New York are growing,

Transportation was not only good for people, but it was good for the goods too. The waterways, railroads, cars & trucks are successfully changing the size of our cities. It has also improved the relationships between city to city. Transportation is now easier for people to get from place to place and go to different places and cities. The waterways and railroads are making it a lot easier for trading and allowing us to trade more and with different places and it has improved our relationships with other cities. Because the transportation is easier, the diversity of the cities was much greater. With more diversity, there were a lot of different beliefs and ways of life. It showed a lot of us citizens about different culture. With all of the different cultural values in our city, I believe that we have gained more freedom and can do more things our own ways without being judged for not acting upon the norm. The farmers have had negative effects from some of the values, but they are recovering and in the long run, these values will continue to grow and our cities will continue to improve as well.

and aren’t slowing down. Due to the growing cities, they have provided a wide range of specialized services, acting as the headquarters of major companies, finance, retail and entertainment. Our public health has been improving as well. With the health in our cities upgrading, it has been helping the cities grow naturally and not by immigration. Not long before now, our cities were growing because of the immigrants. But now immigrants account of only 5 percent of our urban population. Getting from place to place used to be a lot more difficult. Transportation has now defined the development of our growing cities. Transportation in the Cities
