The Return to Normalcy What was the “Return to Normalcy” promised by President Harding, and will it be good for America? The Laissez-Faire Approach Background of President Harding Between 1917 and 1920, we experienced war, recession, and race riots. Warren G. Harding, our U.S. Republican President, became very involved in his thought of “Normalcy”. Harding is a speaker for this new campaign, and his inauguration began the Republican Era which is still lasting through the 1920’s. What is “Return to Normalcy?” The Return to Normalcy was just made by President Harding in this century, the 1920’s. These days, normalcy under the Harding Administration looks like pro-business, anti-tax, and anti-regulation. The word “Normalcy” in this context, implies that we want things to go back to the way they were before the war. But word goes around the nation that scandals are spreading throughout that administration and Harding himself. Nowadays, we have to go through a lot of thinking when picking who’s right and who’s wrong. Nativism to Normal Nativism is the desire to keep America for Americans, and not for foreigners. Anti-Immigration. In this country, after the war there was a huge increase in european immigrants, so our congress passed a series of laws to stop that from happening, so we can get to the normal population like before the war.

Before the war, the laissez-faire did good things for our country. It was also a part of our normalcy. There are many advantages to this philosophy, such as how there are fewer rule and regulations. This allows our businesses to do many things, which helps the goal of having our pro-business. When businesses have fewer rules and regulations, it can make it harder to do business activities. When they do, they generally take more risks and invest in the economy. With the fewer of the two, businesses have a big incentive to try to maximize their profits. A disadvantage would be that our businesses could engage in risky behaviors that could lead to future economic problems. Isolationism and its Benefits to Normalcy Isolationism involves more than just avoiding alliances that could drag America into another war. After the war, Republicans lowered the income taxes on corporations and individuals and raised the tariff. These actions helped our American economy, and that lead to our businesses booming here in the 1920’s.

Deregulation Has deregulation under the Republican presidents benefitted America?

Deregulation under the Republican presidents has benefitted America a lot. Deregulation is the process of the government removing themselves and removing laws from business. The 1920’s presidents have helped big business by being pro business and with their efforts, American economy and life in general has improved everywhere. Warren Harding was a new president for a new era. Harding was a cordial and friendly man, although not a political man. He surrounded himself with close friends, who while he remained truthful, they did not. During his presidency he repealed war effort taxes and reduced federal spending. The effect of his endeavors led to plunging prices and dropped unemployment. Unfortunately, before his first term was over, Harding died of a heart attack. Calvin Coolidge took over, and he has continued on with the ideas that Harding had. Coolidge has cut taxes and reduced unnecessary spending and corporate tax. He has currently stated that he does not choose to run again, but many of his supporters are still hopeful he’ll change his mind.

The

economy has boomed because of the tryings of the Republican presidents. The automobile industry has become big with the help of Henry Ford introducing the assembly line, which also led to an increase in the industries of steel, rubber, and oil. Cars have also made highway construction, gas stations, and repair shops more widespread, which in turn leads to more job possibilities in those areas. Currently more than one eighth of Americans are in auto-related jobs. The presidents have offered a return to normalcy, which means back to business but better. Our government is now pro-business, which is pro-America. The only downside of deregulation is there is still not great pay or working conditions, but if deregulation isn’t working to fix that, then why is it a con for this issue? There are already these problems, and if deregulation isn’t working to fix this, then why is it bad for deregulation? The president has signed laws, made tax rate cuts, and got our country’s first formal budgeting process and a presidential budget director. All of this has improved our lives.

Presidential Policies Have the policies made by the Republican presidents made the US safer, and is war over?

Avoiding involvement in Europe: It’s 1920, and the US has developed strong isolationism with Europe. [Isolationism: a government policy of not taking part in economic and political alliances or relations with other countries] The US is sending delegates to league conferences. It is now 1921, and the league has just established the World Court. The purpose of the World Court is to settle disputes before they turn into war. Other member nations are refusing to approve US membership in the World Court. Disarmament: The US has just attempted to achieve peace through disarmament. President Harding wants to reduce weapons. He has invited representatives of Great Britain, France, Italy, and Japan to Washington to discuss disarmament. Harding and the

supporters of disarmament are hoping that it will discourage war. It seems like it’ll be successful, as the construction of large warships has already been limited.

Kellogg-Briand Pact: It is the year 1928, and the US has just signed the Kellogg-Briand pact. The Kellogg-Briand Pact is an agreement made amongst most nations of the world to try to settle international disputes by peaceful means rather than war. The Kellogg-Briand pact has led to an agreement between the US and France to outlaw war in between their countries. War will soon be rejected as an “instrument of national policies”, as 62 nations have just signed the Kellogg-Briand pact . Our Republican presidents have been doing the most they can to make our country safe, and I believe that their efforts have been successful. By limiting weapons, signing the Kellogg-Briand pact, and forming alliances with European countries, they have ended war and made our country safe.

Red Scare Did the republican presidents go too far to combat the Red Scare? Bailey Langos

America post World War 1 was full of many things, relief because of the war’s end, families reunited with those they loved or lost, stress on the country physically as well as financially, and a growing rise in the fear of radicalism. Radicalism, a point of view favoring extreme change in social and economic structure, became a huge worry for the country during the time. The people already have enough hardship to last a lifetime and didn't want to have to fear the government being overthrown especially after the end of

The officers participating will completely trash homes in search of weapons or anything considered suspicious Sedition Laws Laws stating any opposition to the government is illegal were signed off on and applied to over thirty states. Not only do these laws contradict people’s basic liberties for freedom of speech, over six thousand people are being deported with little to no evidence of government opposition, if they even get to have a trial in the first place.

such a huge war. This extreme fear of opposition to the government became known as the Red Scare. Palmer Raids Part of the Republican presidents combat to radicalist was Palmer Raids. These raids are conducted on homes and business without a warrant.

Republican Presidents Have the Republican Era presidents of the 1920’s been effective? A perfect town in Chicago goes about its day to day life. The men go to work and the women care for the home. The men come home with money, and enjoy family life. Suddenly, the war comes around. All of the young men are forced to enlist for war. They leave, and the town flounders. Women have to enter the workforce to make up money, and their children run wild with nobody to watch them. Everything goes downhill, and this lasted four years. After the war is over some men return home, but some do not. After suffering for so long, the town looks to the new Republican Presidents for help with returning to normalcy. The Republican presidents have been effective at helping the economy recover from post-war problems. Laissez-faire is the process of the government removing themselves from private business transactions. The pro-business government has helped the economy. They have helped to make our country safer by limiting weapons, signing peace treaties, and forming alliances with European countries. People have supported the Republican presidents for their safety efforts. An over fear of radicals is a big issue for the United States. Republican presidents are making large efforts to keep our country safe.

Overall even if some people were against the presidents, the effect of their work has had a positive effect. They have helped everyone return to what life was like before the war which everyone wanted. They have succeeded in making the country a much safer place. People who oppose the presidents are wrong as they oppose a prospering America and they should not be listened to. If you want a better life, support the Republican presidents. A lot of people thought the republicans were wrong for what they were doing. For example, President Harding. Democratic Presidential-Hopeful William Gibbs McAdoo described harding speeches as “an army of pompous phrases moving across the landscape in search of an idea. This showed that some people really didn’t like Harding or some of the other Republican presidents. Overall, I think that the Republican Presidents have been effective because without them, we wouldn’t be where we are today as an American, and we wouldn't have had the lessons learned from how they executed them.
