The project site is located in an area which historically was used for maritime industries. The area has strong identity and inaccessible blue structures. Our goal was to set the right standard for the developing area in order to enrich vibrant urban life and improve connections in central Malmö. We recognised that the site has two front sides and it is important to make the most out of that situation focusing not only on the building, but also on the outdoor environments and inbetween spaces.
The building is made out of 5 parts: underground parking shared by the office building and the future residential building next to, commercial shop facing the main street on the south, restaurant facing the canal on the north, service zone and the access to the underground parking in the centre, reception for the office building and meeting rooms on the upper level, workspaces will take the rest of the upper floors.
The client wished that facade material would represent nature and soil. What we wanted that the facade would also represent post-industrial characteristics of the area. Therefore grey/ beige bricks were chosen and aligned in a very clear grid that represents ploughing fields in Skåne as well as the historic post-industrial character of the site.

YEAR: 2018 LOCATION: MEDELLIN, COLOMBIA TITLE: REGENERATION OF POST-CONFLICT ZONES IN COLOMBIA WITH A FOCUS ON IDP TYPE: MASTER THESIS PROJECT SIZE: 20 HA, 3000 INHABITATS PROJECT: URBAN REDEVELOPMENT STRATEGY & DESIGN COLLABORATORS: LUND UNIVERSITY, NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF COLOMBIA RESPONSIBILITY:
RESEARCH, URBAN STRATEGY AND DESIGN FOR THE SITE.
In November 2016 Colombian Government and a guerrilla rebel group FARC signed peace accords which started a process of ending more than 50- year long lasting armed conflict, which resulted in people being killed and millions being displaced. This became one of the biggest modern world sociopolitical achievements. The Colombian conflict is very complex and roots back to civil war 1948 - 1958 called ’La Violencia’ which started with assassination of a popular politician Jorge Eliecer Gaitan. This divided country into conservative government of Colombia against rural socialist liberals who eventually became rebel armed forces called FARC. FARC participated in extortion, kidnapping and drug trafficking to fund their operations.
After the piece deal is signed Colombian government promised to incorporate FARC into Colombian government in return FARC promised to disarm, slow down involvement in drug trafficking, address abuses of human rights over last 5 decades Because of the amount of people and it’s sprawl it is difficult for governing bodies to tackle many issues that people in different communities face, not to mention gathering funding for regeneration process. That is why project ’Microcircuits’ focuses on strengthening the role of the community within urban design and planning process. Rather than relying on municipality and external funding, project focuses on creating self-sustaining community that tackles and solves problems by itself.
Approach: Focus on public space and street-led settlement upgrading that will gradually integrate old settlements with new urban fabric. Rationalise layouts and generate urban patterns where streets are used for facilitating the movement of people, goods and become the space where social and economic activities can manifest. Streets become tools for social, economic and spatial integration of the neighbourhoods with the city. Rethink typical Uraba settlement typologies and integrate valuable characteristics. Recreate urban typology that tells story of the displaced people.

URBAN STRATEGY
SITE ACCOMMODATES AROUND 300 FAMILIES ALSO NEWLY DISPLACED PEOPLE THAT ARRIVED TO THE AREA 5 YEARS AGO - 22 FAMILIES (80 PEOPLE OUT OF WHICH 35 ARE KIDS).
CLEAN WATER IS ESSENTIAL TO THE SITE. PEOPLE USE RIVER WATER FOR COOKING, WASHING CLOTHES AND SANITARY PURPOSES. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT REDEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA STARTS WITH PROVIDING RESIDENTS WITH CLEAN WATER.
NATIONAL COLOMBIA UNIVERSITY
ONE OF THE SKILLS IDP HAVE IN COMMON IS AGRICULTURE. DEDICATING LAND BETWEEN LAURELES MAIN STREET AND RIVER FOR PRODUCTION, SO THAT THE LOCAL RESIDENTS CAN USE THIS LAND FOR PRODUCING NATURAL MATERIALS.
IN ORDER TO MAKE PRODUCTION ZONE MORE EFFECTIVE, IT SHOULD BE MAXIMIZED. ALSO, THE ACCESS POINTS TO THE SITE ARE REDUCED FOR CARS AND BECOME PEDESTRIANIZED. UNIVERSITY SHOULD ALLOW USE THEIR VAST GREEN AREAS FOR PRODUCTION TOO. IN EXCHANGE THEIR CAMPUS COULD BECOME A PART OF THE RESIDENTIAL SITE.

THE CONNECTIONS BECOME ACTIVE MEETING SPACES FOR RESIDENTS AND PUBLIC. THIS REPRESENTS THAT PHYSICAL BARRIER BETWEEN THE COMMUNAS IS BEING ELIMINATED AND THE PROJECT SITE IS BECOMING MORE INTEGRATED INTO THE CONTEXT. THE CENTRAL STREET WORKS AS THE MAIN COMMERCIAL STREET CONNECTING BOTH ENDS OF THE SITE. SPACES IN-BETWEEN THE BLOCKS ARE FOR PUBLIC ACTIVITIES AND WILL INCLUDE MORE MIXED-USE FUNCTIONS.
BLOCKS BECOMING COURTYARD DEVELOPMENTS HAVING PUBLIC USE AROUND AND PRIVATE OR SEMI-PRIVATE INSIDE THE COURTYARDS. THE DEVELOPMENT ALSO TAKES FURTHER INTO THE SOUTHERN PART OF THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. THIS POTENTIALLY COULD SERVE STUDENT HOUSING AND RENTABLE RESIDENTIAL UNIT DEMAND. ALSO, THIS WOULD INCREASE DIVERSITY OF PEOPLE IN THE AREA AND REDUCE SOCIAL DIVISION.
AFTER THE SITE IS DEVELOPED, THE VISION OF THE AREA WOULD BE STRENGTHENING LAURELES GRID WITH STRUCTURES THAT REPRESENT BOTH - THE NEW DEVELOPMENT OF THE SITE AND THE PLANNED LAURELES TYPOLOGY.
THE IMAGES INDICATE THE ARRANGEMENT OF DIFFERENT TYPOLOGIES IN A BLOCK UNIT. THE SCALE OF BUILDINGS GROWS GRADUALLY FROM THE RIVER (WHERE THE SMALLEST STRUCTURES ARE ALLOCATED - 1 TO 2 STORY) TO THE MAIN STREET (WHERE THE TALLEST BUILDINGS WERE PLACED). THE MAIN STREET CONSISTS OF 3-5 STORY STRUCTURES WHERE MOST OF THE GROUND FLOOR UNITS ARE MAINLY NON-RESIDENTIAL.
THE BLOCK IS FRAMED WITH REBUILT SEMI-PUBLIC PEDESTRIAN PATH ON THE RIVER SIDE AND THE MAIN STREET ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE BLOCK. THE CENTRE OF THE BLOCK IS A PRIVATE COURTYARD USED BY THE RESIDENTS LIVING IN THE BLOCK. THE COURTYARD CONSISTS OF A GREEN SPACE THAT COULD BE USED IN MULTI-PURPOSELY DEPENDING ON RESIDENT’S NEEDS. THE SPACES IN-BETWEEN THE BLOCKS WORK AS PUBLIC GATHERING PLACES AND INCLUDE PUBLIC ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS COMMERCIAL UNITS ON THE GROUND FLOORS. THE DIAGRAMS ALSO INDICATE THE BUILT STRUCTURES AND SPACES IN RELATIONSHIP TO TOPOGRAPHY, RIVER AND PEDESTRIAN PATHS ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE SITE.
PHASING
STAGING OF THE PROJECT SHOULD START WITH BUILDING NEW STRUCTURES ON THE NORTH-EASTERN SIDE OF THE SITE. THE NEW PART OF DEVELOPMENT SHOULD PROVIDE 250 FLATS ABLE TO HOST AROUND 80 RELOCATED FAMILIES FROM THE MARKED ZONES.
IN ADDITION TO THAT SOME OF THE FLATS WILL BE USED AS STUDENT ACCOMMODATION FOR THE STUDENTS OF NATIONAL COLOMBIAN UNIVERSITY AND UNIVERSITY OF ANTIOQUIA. THE REST OF THE APARTMENTS SHOULD BE MAINLY RENTABLE.
AFTER THE FIRST STAGE IS PROCESSED FOLLOWING RELOCATION PROCESS WILL TAKE PLACE STARTING WITH THE EASTERN SIDE AND CONTINUING TOWARD THE WEST.
STAGES 2, 3, 4 AND 5 WILL RELOCATE AROUND 60 FAMILIES DURING EACH STAGE AS WELL AS ALLOCATING STRUCTURES FOR OFFICES, OTHER RENTAL APARTMENTS, EDUCATIONAL, CULTURAL AND HEALTHCARE UNITS.
THE NEW STRUCTURE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY SHOULD RELATE TO BOTH: OLD LAURELES BUILDING TYPOLOGY AND NEWLY REDEVELOPED ROBLEDO SIDE.

Accessible Seafront The old town is connected to the new canal city through the extension of the inner city streets. While streets are prolonged into the harbor to bring the people there, canals are dug to bring the water closer to the existing town and the people. In activating the seafront citizens as well as visitors will be able to enjoy close contact to the water along all of the new shoreline. This shoreline will be for pedestrians and nonmotorized vehicles only and will be offering an array of different spaces. Transport Instead of walking from the central station over bridges and along the canals toward the canal city it is also possible to take busses which run along the traffic streets in the core of the canal city or one can also enjoy a ride on the new
boat-bus service going from central station to the mountain-view park and from there further direction Skåre. In the last stage it might also be possible to take the train from Lund or Malmö directly to the heart of the new canal city. The private traffic goes along the same roads as the busses and parking is offered either as street parking or in parking houses. Separate bike paths are offered along the inner core roads as well as along the shoreline. Microclimate In order to make the canal city not only pleasant in summertime but during the whole year the project focuses on protecting people from the strong winds coming mostly from a western direction. The buildings are oriented so that there is no direct paths for the wind to swish through the neighborhoods; the buildings on the shoreline work as a shelter for the inner harbor
area. Also building heights and planting work towards protection from the wind while still allowing for the sunlight to penetrate into the area. Furthermore some of the buildings offer big indoor spaces (industry village, sport arena, waterpark, workshops, …) which offer attractive spaces also during bad weather. The old harbor which has been an important part of the Trelleborg history will become publicly accessible and add to the cultural environment. It is important to keep some of the buildings to make history visible (silos, big industrial halls) as well as fill them with activities like sports, production-workshops, … . The idea is to integrate the new part of town through events organized by associations and a cultural loop connecting all the existing major sights with the new ones in the harbor.

In stage 0 the development will focus on building up the shoreline protection against sea level rise in the south-western part of the site as well as starting to attract people to the site. Existing buildings will be used to host indoor sport facilities (soccer, rugby ‌), restaurants, cafes and offices while only a small number of new studio-like buildings offer artists- housing, club
houses, small scale manufacturing, cafĂŠ and restaurant spaces as well as B&B. The space at the edge of the peninsula is reserved for a park. Two lookout huts will be installed on top of the mountain to offer views towards ocean and city, shelter from the strong winds and rain as well as make it a popular spot for experiencing Trelleborg in a new way. Furthermore a pier for
swimming is introduced and some hard surfaces allow for occasional festivities to take place in the area in order to introduce it to the locals. The area will be served by a boat service and a bus line each connecting the park to the Central station.
During the 1st Stage the focus lays on developing the canals and the edge. The land should be treated with phytoremediation where necessary and as far as schedule and timeline allows. As little land as possible should have to leave the site. The material from the canals is used to elevate the zones free of existing buildings to around 3 meters above sea level. In
terms of buildings the focus lays on developing along the seafront and on public buildings like workshops, maritime museum, university and schools. Residential and office buildings along the seafront could come at roughly the same time and could be realized by private developers in order to help the city finance the public buildings. Complementary to the edge also the
inner traffic roads are introduced to offer private and public transport to the area.
While there is no strict division between the first and 2nd stage the main focus now lays on the development of the inner parts of the site in order to densify and complement the area.
Also the space along the Hamngatan should be defined on both sides in order to make the different parts of the city come together. The existing rail tracks are kept in place as
reminder of the past and could at that stage be reintroduced and used to extend the train from the central station to South Bridge.

YEAR: 2017 LOCATION: ESLÖV, SWEDEN CLIENT: ESLÖV BOSTADS TYPE: INVITED COMPETITION TEAM: JOANNA LEWIS JONSSON (LANDEN+KRANTZ ARKITEKTER) SIZE: 6500 M2 PROJECT: MIXED-USE URBAN DEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITY: Sprifabriken project was about regenerating a 0.65 HA site in Eslöv, Sweden. The task from the client was to show possiblities for allocating residential units in a post-industrial structure that used to be a distilery. Instead of only developing the site for residential purposes, we saw the site as a potential acctivator for development of the whole area in southern Eslöv. The site was located not far away from the Central station, had iconic post-industrial character and historical value. However the site was badly integrated into the city life. The first step what we did was to look at the urban strategy of how to integrate the project site and link it to the main pedestrian paths in the city. Secondly we made the site and existing brick structure more penetratable by
DESIGN LEADER ON BEHALF OF LANDEN+KRANTZ ARKITEKTER the pedestrians and cyclist. Instead of only exploiting the site for residential purposes we tried to integrate other functions (culture school, offices, restaurants/cafes into the development. All these different programes were allocated on the ground floor allong the western street. We saw this project as a pilot project that will generate interest to the area and attract mixed use functions to establish in the area. Next step was to create private and semi private spaces within the site. We believe in diversity of spaces for different uses, so that people with different needs can enjoy living and working in the area. Therefore we divided the public places into 3 parts and terraced them in order to get the best solar gain. Some parts of terraces would be used by people living in the development, others would be semi public, others - integrated within culture school life.
Last step was to finally integrate residential uses into the development. We did it by taking the typical Eslöv single family house typology and integrating it into the post-industrial distilery building. The new ‘villa’ volumes are made of vertical black wooden cladding and are set back from the brick building in order to not overshadow the historic structure.

YEAR: 2017 LOCATION: TIANJIN, CHINA TYPE: UNIVERSITY PROJECT COLLABORATORS: LUND UNIVERSITY, NANJING UNIVERSITY SIZE: 125 HA PROJECT: URBAN REDEVELOPMENT RESPONSIBILITY: The design process of the site in Tianjin started by understanding the goals of the municipality, planning office and what the people of Tinajin need. Tianjin municipality have already developed multiple proposals and the strategy for the city including Hongqao district. The key aspects the city is striving for are: to reintroduce the site as a sub-CBD (Commercial Business District) connected with the main CBD; to connect the Binhai New City to the north of Tianjin through a soft scape and Haihe river. The new design proposals can accommodate 30 000 people on the site, which I also took as a bench mark for the new design development of the site. However, one of the biggest questions is what environments and living experience these 30 000 new people will get? Therefore taking human needs into account is crucial part of the design process. After visiting the site it was clear that in order to deliver good living environments and spaces in China we need to reconsider the basics: clean air, soil and water; affordability of dwellings; scale and transparency of building and street
RESEARCH, URBAN STRATEGY AND DESIGN FOR THE SITE. typologies; human-friendly, diverse and accessible public spaces. It was also important not to forget the diversity of people and social backgrounds that will be moving into the site as well as the 5% annual Tianjin population growth. It means that with every year the demand of new households, workplaces and service facilities will increase. Stage 1: Municipality sells the land to developers in order to develop CBD and the areas around North Metro station, with the intention that investors will also fund development of surrounding public spaces and riverfront. Municipality reinvests the money back to the site by clearing the built structures that are in bad condition, leaving some of the dwellings for people to move in during the development process. Municipality also invests money into building connections over the river to surrounding sites and planting a performative forest in-between developing areas to clean the soil, water and air. The performative forest will also increase the land value for future developments.
Stage 2: Developers sell out property to residents and offices and reinvests back to the site together with municipality to develop Metro lines, Metro stations inside the site and the surrounding plots. Municipality also invests into public/cultural building, which will be one of many public use buildings along Hive Street. This should bring more people to get familiar with the site, it’s greenery and it’s potential for furture use. Stage 3: Continuous development of sites around Metro stations and CBD. Municipality sells out the land along the Hongqao Boulevard and reinvests to develop Park Metro station and Recreational Loop. Municipality introduces Health care facilities, University buildings and student housing to the North East of the site and Hive Street. Stage 4: Moving people from existing old structures, demolishing them and redeveloping the plots. Stage 5: Continuos development along Hongqao Boulvard and Hive Street.

YEAR: 2018 LOCATION: MALMĂ–, SWEDEN TYPE: EXHIBITION COLLABORATORS: LANDEN+KRANTZ ARKITEKTER SIZE: 1 M2 PROJECT: INSTALLATION RESPONSIBILITY:
We see the change in our profession now more than ever. Architecture and design have become tools that combine and coordinate different industries and sciences together. However nowadays it also becomes an industry being able to accommodate shifts and changes in social, economic and technological fields. The world is always changing, requiring people, structures, spaces and objects to become more adaptable and flexible whether it comes in physical shapes or uses.
AUTHOR AND ADMINISTRATOR OF THE INSTALLATION.
People are used to a sense of order in whatever form it takes. Our office believes that in every order there should be a sense of chaos, in every grid there should be a possibility for drama, in every man there should be a bit of a child – who is able to play, change and discover. With this installation we would like to represent that desire for discovery, which perhaps starts in an ordinary and rational environment, but an environment that adapts and changes as people use it according to their needs.
The installation is a modular structure that is made from interlocking wood. The basic shape is a cube representing order, rationality and simplicity. The structure welcomes viewers to become users and interact with the form. Unfold it! Reveal it! And in the end discover something unexpected. You might discover that sometimes there is a thin line between something static and something dynamic, a second between dusk and dawn, a piece of glass between something fixed and something unrestrained.
