PROJECTS: DOUGLAS HOUSE CITY NORTH SECC HOTEL & MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT ADEL BECK SECURE CHILDREN’S HOME COLLABORATED: ORKNEY HOSPITAL WEST DUMBARTONSHIRE CENTRE WOSSRF NEW CAIRO MASTERPLAN ABERDEEN INTERNATIONAL PARK
Douglas House is a commercial use project, which offers 8,040sq. meter (86,500 sq. ft.) grade A office space. The office block will replace existing Douglas House and will consist of 13 storeys.
The design process started with feasibility studies for the office block in an occupied site The site is surrounded by 10-14 storey office blocks at the heart of Glasgow’s Business District. Our team focused on rational, smart design approach which has potential to be embraced with refined detailing at later stage of the project. The key aspect of a design process was to ensure we provide as much NET area for the client as a result of manipulating the core of the building and making it as efficient as possible.
Our team came up with proposal which offers double - height entrance lobby, welfare facilities, 9-storey typical office space, 3-storey setback penthouse office space, sanitary and plant facilities. The design also incorporates an urban strategy in terms of rebuilding and embracing street edges of Douglas and Waterloo streets, making them sharper, integrated in wider context and more appealing from the humans perspective. The fenestration design consists of vertical fins that change rhythm and segmentation every 3 storeys upwards. The facade language visually enriches and lightens the building, provides shading for office space and reflects rigid urban grid of Glasgow’s Business District.

021 City North
A prime location in Europe’s Energy Capital Aberdeen’s status as a global centre of excellence in the energy sector is well established. Many of the world’s largest oil exploration, production and service companies are located in the city, which is enjoying significant new investment in offshore exploration, and in the exploitation of new fields and the redevelopment of existing fields. North Sea production is expected to extend beyond 2050. The presence of these businesses, and many others, places Aberdeen at the centre of a global supply chain in offshore engineering and technology. Aberdeen is the main regional centre for north east Scotland ; with a regional population of approximately 500,000. The city is the centre for regional administration, retail and tourism, health and higher education. The University population is 30,000 students
City North project was designed to incorporate: Breeam very good rating; Energy performance certificate b+; Distinctive design with double height atria; Air conditioning; LG7 compatible lighting; Open plan efficient floorplates; Fully accessible raised flooring; 2.9M floor to ceiling height; Quality wc and shower facilities; Cycle racks; DDA compliant; Car parking at 1 space per 30 sq m gross
I started working on City North project in late design stage helping the team with detail design, BIM coordination, producing contract drawings for the contractor and external envelope drawing package. During this project I was directly involved into Design Team meetings with the general contractor, consultants (structural engineer, M+E engineer, curtain walling consultant) and manufacturers. We were able to produce a rational and finely detailed design with worth of £30M GBP. The project should ‘’see the daylight’’ in 2016.

020 SECC Hotel & Mixed Use Development
Forming part of the context at the SECC, Glasgow, the proposed development site, when completed, will act as the gateway to the high profile entertainment venues, The Hydro, The Clyde Auditorium and the rest of the SECC facilities. The opportunity exists to create a highly sought after, mixed use development with bold & striking design features that will act as a catalyst for the further regeneration of this area and which will maximise the benefit from the current pedestrian “footfall” generated by events held in the venues.
DON’T EVEN DARE
SECC Mixed Use Development The scheme will form an important urban cross roads between the SECC, Finnieston, Pacific Quay and Glasgow City Centre. Leisure offers will activate the public realm along Finnieston Street and Stobcross Road, continuing the burgeoning Finnieston and Argyle Street area and capitalising on the new 13,000 capacity SSE Hydro. The 224 bed hotel with bar, restaurant and conference facilities sits adjacent to the entertainment complex of the SECC and has a direct pedestrian link to the adjacent car park. A 100 unit apartment buildings complete the urban block, addresses the length of Finnieston Street then rises up to take advantage of the extensive views of the River Clyde and Finnieston Crane to the South. An internal courtyard provides the secondary aspect to the apartments with a shared, south facing roof terrace.
Hotel Proposal The ground floor of the hotel contains the main entrance and reception spaces, a bar, restaurant and kitchen. In addition the back of house support spaces and plant room are located on the ground floor adjacent to the northern service lane. The first floor is dedicated to conference and function facilities with associated back of house and storage provision. A pedestrian link is provided at second floor level with direct access to the adjacent multi storey car park. This floor houses fifteen service apartments. The upper eight floors contain 28 bedrooms each.
As part of the Due Diligience exercise we were asked to ensure the following existing elements were reviewed, addressed and documented and how these would in turn affect the strategic proposals (RIBA Plan of Work – Stage 2 Concept Design): *Physical site constraints *Environmental & ground conditions *Roads & vehicle circulation *Existing utilities *Planning policy

I joined the team at the early Detailed Design stage of the project and took responsibility of BIM coordination during late design and delivery stages. I was also responsible for FF&E modelling and coordination with Architectural model and MEP consultants. The project was designed on BIM platform together with M&E engineers. The collaboration with Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing consultants was essential since educational and residential blocks were made in precast concrete. Unfortunately modelling input was limited to architecture and services due the structural engineer’s limited BIM capabilities.
Adel Beck Secure Children’s Home was the first project I was involved in which has already been erected on site. It has been a great & challenging experience to help my team to deliver the project, collaborate with many different consultants and coordinate BIM.
