Finishing his debut collegiate season with the second-best scoring average in school history, Caleb Stetzner is the 2016-17 GNAC Freshman of the Year and earns second-team all-conference honors. PORTLAND, Ore. – After posting the second-lowest scoring average in Montana State University Billings men’s golf single-season history, Caleb Stetzner has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and a second-team all-conference pick announced by the conference office Monday. Stetzner ranked fourth in the entire GNAC in scoring average with 73.7 strokes per round, a total that was just 0.7 strokes away from Jake Hedge’s school record of 73.0 strokes per round in the 2014-15 season. “I am very happy for Caleb to be selected second-team all-conference and freshman of the year,” said MSUB head coach Kevin Woodin. “He had a very consistent season and established himself as one of the top young players in both our conference and region. I look forward to his continued success in the classroom and on the course.”

Stetzner competed in all nine events and 26 rounds for the ‘Jackets in 2016-17, and had four top-10 finishes and one top-5 finish. His low round on the season was a 67 at the Rocky Mountain College Invitational on Oct. 2, 2016. It came as part of a three-round total of 209 (67-72-70) for Stetzner, which resulted in a fourth-place finish at the event. His 67 also came among a record-breaking round by the Yellowjacket men, who had five golfers break 70 and totaled a team score of 269. The Anaconda, Mont., native shot no worse than a 79 on the season, as he was under the 80 mark in all 26 rounds that he played. His six par rounds overall were the most on the team, and his 209 at the RMC fall tournament tied for the fifth-best total in school history. Stetzner also contributed to MSUB’s team score of 299.0 this year, which ranks second-lowest in school history. Chris Crisologo of Simon Fraser University repeated as the GNAC Player of the Year, and Western Washington University head coach Luke Bennett repeated as the Coach of the Year in the GNAC. --@MSUBSports | #JacketNation--
