ABOUT YELLOWJACKET ATHLETICS Home of the Yellowjackets, the Montana State University Billings department of intercollegiate athletics supports 15 men’s and women’s varsity sports which compete in the NCAA at the Division II level. MSUB is one of 11 full-time members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, which features 11 championships throughout each academic year. More than 240 student-athletes compete on MSUB’s teams, and members of Yellowjacket teams posted a collective 3.15 grade point average during the 2015-16 academic year. MSUB-sponsored varsity sports include men’s and women’s teams in basketball, cheer/ stunt, cross-country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, as well as baseball, softball, and women’s volleyball. Highlights from the 2015-16 season included a second NCAA West Region Championships berth for MSUB’s women’s basketball team in the last three years, as the Yellowjackets played their way to the title game of the GNAC tournament before advancing. Junior Alisha Breen led the GNAC in scoring with 17.4 points per game, and senior Janiel Olson broke the school’s career rebounding record. Senior Della Lyle stole the show on the track for the ‘Jackets, becoming the first All-American in school history on the women’s side. She was selected as the GNAC Newcomer of the Year in both indoor and outdoor seasons, and represented the Yellowjackets at the NCAA National Championships. On the baseball diamond, the ‘Jackets claimed their second straight GNAC regular-season title, setting a program record with 30 victories including their first-ever postseason win in the conference tournament. Junior Cody Cooper shattered the school record with 106 strikeouts in 99 1/3 innings, and senior Luke Reinschmidt closed his historic career by earning first-team all-region honors for a second straight season. MSUB’s men’s soccer team also had a highlight year, posting its first winning season since 2012. Sophomore Ricardo Palomino led the entire NCAA west region in goals with 16, and earned first-team all-region honors. In women’s soccer, the ‘Jackets advanced to their third GNAC Championship tournament in the last four seasons, after posting a second consecutive winning year. MSUB hosted three conference championship events and an NCAA Division II West Region Championship for the first time ever during the 2014-15 year. The ‘Jackets welcomed more than 30 teams to Billings on Nov. 22, 2014 for the NCAA Division II West Region Championships at Amend Park, hosted the 2014-15 Men’s and Women’s GNAC Basketball Championships from March 4-7, 2015 at Alterowitz Gym, and capped off the year by hosting the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships from May 7-8 at Dehler Park. MSUB also serves as the host of the largest NCAA Division II softball tournament, the Desert Stinger Classic, which was played for the sixth year in a row from Feb. 12-14, 2015 at Majestic Park in Las Vegas.

ABOUT YELLOWJACKET ATHLETICS The 2014-15 year also featured three All-American athletes from MSUB, including senior Kayleen Goggins (women’s basketball), junior Robert Peterson (men’s indoor track & field), and senior Brody Miller (baseball). Miller was also selected as the 201415 GNAC Male Athlete of the Year for all sports, just the second baseball player in the conference’s history to win the award, and the second student-athlete from MSUB to collect the honor as he joined women’s basketball star Bobbi Knudsen (2013-14). Capturing GNAC crowns during the 2014-15 year were MSUB’s baseball and softball teams. The Yellowjackets won the 2015 GNAC Softball Championships and advanced all the way to the semifinals of the NCAA Division II West Region Championships in May. MSUB’s women’s soccer team also competed for a GNAC Championship title, finishing in second place in the conference standings and earning the No. 2 seed into the conference tournament in the fall of 2014. In men’s golf, senior Jake Hedge also represented the ‘Jackets at the NCAA Regional level, competing as an individual in the championships in Monterey Bay, Calif., from May 6-8, 2015. In 2013-14, the MSUB women’s basketball team made history by winning the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular season title and advancing to the NCAA Division II west regional championship game. MSUB’s 2013-14 women’s basketball team joined the Yellowjackets’ 1998-99 squad as the only two in program history to advance to the NCAA regional title game. The latter continued on to the Elite Eight, marking the furthest-advancing MSUB team in the school’s history. In 2012, the MSUB softball team won the GNAC regular season title with a 32-18 overall record and earned hosting privileges for the 2013 conference softball tournament. The 2012 Yellowjacket men’s basketball team also earned a conference title, defeating the University of Alaska Anchorage 74-70 in the GNAC tournament championship game. Formerly known as Eastern Montana College, MSUB athletics stem back to the 1927-28 season, the year in which the university was founded. The Yellowjackets have competed in a number of different conferences throughout the years, and prior to the 1980-81 season the athletic department transitioned from the NAIA to competing at the NCAA Division II level. The MSUB Hall of Fame and Distinction inducted its inaugural class in 1990 and serves as a tribute towards influential figures on and off the court, in both current and retired sports.

MSUB AND TEAM IMPACT It is the mission of Team IMPACT to positively influence the lives of children facing tough health challenges through pairing them with collegiate athletic teams as a support system. Yellowjacket Athletics is proud to partner with Team IMPACT, and welcome children in need onto its teams.

MSUB’s parternship with Team IMPACT began in the fall of 2014 when Billings native Sebastien Easton became a member of the Yellowjackets’ men’s soccer team. A local child battling cancer, Sebastien has served as an inspiration to all of MSUB’s athletes and put things into perspective for everyone who has had the pleasure of meeting him. Sebastien continues to regularly attend practices, games, and team functions and will forever occupy a spot on MSUB’s men’s soccer roster. Since joining the Yellowjackets, Sebastien’s cancer has gone into remission, and he is excited to be linking up with the team for his third season in the fall of 2016.

Palomino wins HERO Sports D2 Legend of the Year award Monday, December 21, 2015 Honoring the top individual performances across NCAA Division II, the HERO Sports Legend of the Year award for the 2015 season goes to MSUB men’s soccer star Ricardo Palomino. BILLINGS, Mont. – After one of the top seasons in Montana State University Billings men’s soccer history, sophomore forward Ricardo Palomino has earned the HERO Sports Division II Legend of the Year award announced Monday. “We are incredibly proud of Ricardo for earning this fantastic achievement,” commented MSUB head coach Alex Balog. “He scored 16 goals for us and is fully deserving of this award. That being said, this award is also for our whole team and program, and it shows that we are moving in the right direction.” Palomino was one of 13 finalists for the award, which was decided by a nation-wide voting poll. Each finalist was a winner of the HERO Sports Hero of the Week throughout the 2015 season. Palomino, who was nominated for the weekly award twice this fall, won the honor after he scored a hat trick in the second half of a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Concordia University at home on Oct. 17 at Yellowjacket Field. Palomino finished the year with the fourth-highest goals and scoring totals in MSUB history, and led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and entire Division II west region with 16 goals and 34 points. He was picked to the D2 Collegiate Commissioners Association first-team all-region, after being awarded first-team all-GNAC and the conference’s co-Newcomer of the Year. Palomino helped MSUB to its first winning season since 2012, as the Yellowjackets finished 2015 with a mark of 8-6-4 overall and 6-5-3 in GNAC games for fourth place. “Ricardo worked very hard all season to put the team and himself into a position to be successful,” Balog said. “We are very happy all that hard work is now being recognized with this national award.”

Cameron Lee rises as leader throughout career as Yellowjacket Wednesday, September 16, 2015 A four-year starter for the Yellowjackets, senior captain Cameron Lee is a key leadership figure for all of MSUB Athletics as he also serves as the SAAC president for the department. MSUB SPORTS – Run your eyes up and down the Montana State University Billings men’s soccer roster and diverse is an adjective that only just begins to tell the story of the 30 entries. Ten different countries are represented between players and coaches, a conglomerate of international styles converging on Yellowjacket Field in Billings and defining its own unique style of soccer. Among the faces sporting navy and gold are new, promising players possessing potential previously unwitnessed at MSUB. There is a Mexican striker who through four games ranks fourth in the nation in scoring. There are German and American midfielders who have connected so seamlessly with their forward up top they have created the illusion of being 10-year veteran teammates. There is a 6-foot-3 British central defender, soft with his words but brilliantly tough and fearless with his tackling on the ball. There is a German patrolling the 18-yard box, snatching crosses and shots out of thin air and every once in a while stealing the show with a 70yard assist from box-to-box. There are a pair of Australians in the center, infecting the team with their contagiously positive personalities. There’s a Brazilian winger, lightning quick with a shot equally displaying power and finesse.

There are two outside backs; an outspoken leader from England and a humble Washingtonian eager to prove himself as a senior after missing all of last season with an injury. There are reminders of the fragility of life, a Californian whom the 29 others on the roster will always play for and hold in their highest regards. A 7-year-old Billings boy who has stolen the Yellowjackets’ hearts, with enough energy and character to lift the spirits of the squad, and with enough inspiration to alter the lives of every single one of them. In the center of it all is a man who wears the colors as proudly as any Yellowjacket ever has, a humble, gracious leader who has transformed into one of the most significant athletes in MSUB men’s soccer history. Cameron Lee, born in Cape Town, South Africa, spending much of his childhood in the Isle of Man of the British Crown, has earned the black captain’s stripe he sports on his left arm on Gameday. He has earned it through the leader he has become, through his ability to influence each and every player and every style surrounding him on the field. Beyond the pitch, he has earned it through all of his peers at MSUB, being elected as the president of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Above all, Lee has grown into an ambassador for his team, MSUB Athletics and the university as a whole. He has become the fitting semblance of the mission of MSUB to foster growth and well-rounded development of each of its students. Having already excelled as a model citizen and matured into a role model however, there remains work to do in his final season with the Yellowjackets. OFF TO THE STATES

Cameron Lee as a freshman in 2012.

In December of 2011, Lee put his skillset on display in a showcase at the London Soccer Dome. Collegiate coaches from across the United States were avidly taking notes, searching to pick out the top talent to bring back to their squads across the Atlantic Ocean.

Then-MSUB head coach Dan McNally had his eye on a pair of players at the showcase, as Lee and an Aylesford, England native Sam Butterworth caught his attention and provoked scholarship offers. “At that point, Sam and I didn’t know each other but we happened to be playing at the same venue,” Lee commented on being recruited to MSUB. “Dan saw us both and spoke to us. Right at that moment I was sold on MSUB, and it was the fact that he took the time after the event to make me feel like I was worth something.” Though they didn’t know it at the time, Butterworth and Lee would end up becoming roommates their freshman season at MSUB, beginning their college soccer journey together. Lee inked his letter of intent to become a Yellowjacket and headed to Billings in the fall of 2012. It was the opportunity to compete at a high level athletically while completing his higher education that drew Lee to the United States, and he was surprised at how quickly he adapted to the culture change. “I knew my father wanted me to get my degree and America was the best fit,” Lee said. “The university system in the U.K. does not concentrate on sports at the age of 18-20, and there was a bigger emphasis on sports in college here. It is very evident that soccer is extremely fast-growing in the States, and to be a part of that in this time is something special that most people don’t realize.”

10 | 2016 MSUB Men’s Soccer Media Guide | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com

Lee had an impact right away, starting in his very first game for MSUB at Chaminade University in Hawaii and playing more than 1,500 minutes as a freshman while starting all 18 contests. In his 12th career match, Lee scored his first collegiate goal as he put the Yellowjackets ahead 1-0 in a road match against Western Washington with a volley finish in the 23rd minute on Sept. 15, 2012. While it was clear Lee had no problem fitting into the team’s style of play, it was the impact he had on teammates off the field that garnered praise right off the bat as well. “We hit it off really well from the get-go, and we became pretty good friends off the field,” commented fellow senior Garret Robinson, who met Lee their freshman year in 2012. “We clicked on an intellectual level and both had the same aspirations for life. Coming to Billings was weird for us and Butters, but we all bonded pretty well in our first year together.” Butterworth cited Lee’s laid back personality and calm mentality as indicators that he would one day grow into a powerful leader. “Cam looks at things in a different perspective from other people,” Butterworth said. “He doesn’t rush into anything, and things worked well between us straight away.” Helping Lee assume a major role as a freshman were a trio of key role models who he credits with having a major impact on his personal development. In his first season, Lee played next to Conner Moe as a central defender and also looked up to Blair Stevenson and Thomas Chameraud to show him the ropes at the collegiate level. “Blair adopted me under his wing, and he had a passion for the game that I don’t think many people could match,” Lee said. “He was an exceptional player. Thomas was potentially the best attacking player who I have ever played with, and I could always rely on him.” Chameraud is currently MSUB’s assistant coach, and alongside him last season was Moe as Lee was fortunate to have two of his major influences remain as guides in a coaching role. “Conner and I developed a special partnership off the field, and I learned so much from him. More than any other player, he has always been my role model at this university because of his passion, tenacity, and his will to win. He is, in my eyes, the best defender I have ever played with and I have learned absurd amounts from him.” BLEEDING NAVY AND GOLD

Lee and assistant coach Conner Moe embrace after a home victory during the 2014 season.

“People will remember his leadership skills and his positive, caring attitude. He cares about his teammates a lot, and that is something the younger players on the team can learn from and carry on. And he is the best dancer on the team.” – Senior Garret Robinson on the legacy of senior Cameron Lee. By statistical measure, Lee’s career to this point has been a model of defensive excellence and consistency. He has started 54 matches and played in 56 through his first four games of 2015, and will cross 5,000 career minutes played with his next two matches. Playing a position that doesn’t lend itself to statistical glamour however, Lee’s career as a center back is more appropriately defined through the growth he has experienced and leadership qualities he has attained. “Cameron has become a man during his time here at MSUB,” commented Yellowjacket head coach Alex Balog. “He came in four years ago and had the qualities on the field to become a starter right away, but off the field he needed growth. Year-by-year he has become a better person, and in our program that’s the ultimate goal: Improve the human being. I’m very proud of how Cameron has grown into a steady person with a good head on his shoulders.”

As Lee continues to grow as a leader now in his senior season, he commented that the difficulty of balancing life as a student-athlete is a challenging part of the maturation process that everyone in the program faces. “College is certainly a learning experience, a time for development and growth in a person’s life,” Lee said. “At times there are a lot of emotional rollercoasters, and you have to find a healthy balance with your social life as well.” Lee has been able to impart this message among his peers, getting involved with MSUB’s SAAC as a freshman and taking ownership within it. After serving as a representative for MSUB’s men’s soccer team during his first two seasons, Lee served as vice president last year before being elected president as a senior. The main function of SAAC, an organization featured at every NCAA institution across all divisions, is to foster relations between athletes, their university, and the surrounding local community. Lee has been tasked with leading a committee of his peers in fundraising and community service projects, and also serves as MSUB’s representative at the conference SAAC level. “SAAC allows you to be more involved with your school and athletic department in particular,” Lee said. “One of the reasons I aspired to become president is that I want to help people better themselves first and foremost. SAAC provides an ideal opportunity for student-athletes to do this, and we all want to help people on our campus become even better role models than they already are.” Lee’s concerted effort to serve as a leader among his peers not only on the field but off of it as well is one of the main reasons he is held in the highest regards by those closest to him. “Cam has been a good friend to all of us with his leadership, because he does well just being one of the players like all of us,” commented Daragh Kavanagh. “He doesn’t stand out as a boss figure to us, he is down to earth and is just one of the guys. He deals with his ups and downs calmly, and rarely loses focus on his goals.” DEFENDER AT HEART From the time he can first remember playing the game he loves, Lee has always been a defender. His even-keel personality and rare composure fit the position naturally, and even when conditions on his youth fields in Cape Town weren’t ideal, Lee found a way to make the best out of what he had. “There were some very good academies but there were also some very brutal areas,” Lee commented regarding playing the game growing up. “Sometimes there were no game balls and you had to bring your own to practice. In the big scheme of things, it was humbling growing up there and seeing that side of the spectrum. It only makes you appreciate what you have that much more.”

12 | 2016 MSUB Men’s Soccer Media Guide | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com

The humbleness has not escaped Lee throughout the fortunate opportunity he has had to compete with the Yellowjackets over the past four seasons. His family has held stronger than anyone else by his side, as he credits his parents and younger brother with providing the platform for his growth at MSUB. “Without them, I would not be here with this opportunity experiencing things I’ve been able to experience,” Lee commented on his mother Theresa, father Marc, and brother Neeson. “My little brother is my best friend and has always supported me. My mother is the extreme loving type, and she has given me the love and support any child could hope for and more. My father has given me the set of tools to become a man, and has always taught me to do that which is right. Those three are closer to me than anyone in my life.” Lee is completing a degree in organizational communications, with hopes of pursuing occupational practical training opportunities which would provide him with a visa to remain in the United States and begin his career. He has maximized the value of his time as a Yellowjacket, earning a starting spot on the pitch and developing better than he or his coaches could have hoped for into a captain. “Cameron has turned out to be a great mentor for many of our guys,” Balog said. “Not just the youngsters, but every player in our program knows they can turn to Cameron if they need guidance. The greatest reward for us is to see what he has become and how good of a leader he has grown into.” Among the wide range of personalities and cultural backgrounds on MSUB’s roster, Lee’s does not stand out at first glance. He doesn’t seek the respect of his teammates through orders; he commands it through the example he displays through his every action. Beyond all, Lee has embodied the spirit of Yellowjacket Athletics, maximizing the collegiate experience and providing a living example of becoming a leader his peers, family, and all those around him can aspire to emulate.

Yellowjacket AD Krista Montague Krista (Fjelstad) Montague is entering her 14th year of employment at MSU Billings and her fourth as director of intercollegiate athletics in 2016-17. Montague led the athletic department’s 240-plus student-athletes to another successful year on the playing field and in the classroom in 2015-16, as the cumulative grade point average surpassed 3.0 and 48 individuals earned academic all-conference honors. Montague will also serve as a mentor for the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association Mentoring Program starting in the 2016-17 academic year. In 2014-15, MSUB hosted several marquee championship events for the first time ever. In November, MSUB welcomed the 2014 NCAA Division II Cross Country West Region Championships to Billings, which included participation from 32 teams across the region. MSUB also hosted the 2014-15 GNAC Basketball Championships and the 2015 GNAC Baseball Championships during the academic year. MSUB’s softball team advanced to the NCAA Division II West Region Championship game after winning the GNAC Championships title, and the Yellowjackets’ baseball team also claimed a conference title during 2014-15. During her first year at the helm of the athletic department, Montague successfully secured hosting responsibilities for the upcoming 2014 NCAA cross country west regional championships and 2014-15 Great Northwest Athletic Conference men’s and women’s basketball championships. Montague began her employment with MSUB in July of 2002 as the department’s development and marketing director. Shortly after being hired, she was appointed to the position of senior woman administrator, making her the highest-ranking female administrator in the athletic department. When Montana State University Billings announced the hiring of Montague as its new athletic director on May 10, 2013, it became the first NCAA institution in Montana to have a female athletic director. In 2005, the titles of assistant AD and NCAA compliance coordinator were added to her duties, while she still managed the corporate partnership program and special events for the department. In 2009, Montague was promoted to associate AD. As associate AD, her primary responsibilities included overseeing and managing NCAA II compliance for each of the 17 sports and co-ed cheer, as well serving as a crucial member of the athletics administration team and academic liaison between the different campus constituencies and athletics. Montague, a native of Eastern Montana, received her undergraduate degree in business administration with an option in marketing in 1999 from MSU Billings. Montague was a four-year letterwinner for the MSUB women’s basketball team and left the program with the school record for career free-throw percentage. As a senior, Montague helped MSU Billings to the West Region Championship and the program's first and only Elite Eight appearance in women’s basketball. Montague is a member of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics) and NACWAA (National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators), as well as various other state and local organizations. In 201112, she served on NACWAA’s Legislation & Governance Committee, and also served as a member of the NCAA II Softball West Regional Advisory Committee in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011. Before joining the MSU Billings athletic staff full time, Montague was the athletic department’s part-time corporate partnership director and held various positions for DD Marketing (Pueblo, Colo.), Norwest Bank, and Billings Clinic. Montague recently completed a master's degree in public relations at MSU Billings. She lives in West Billings with her husband Brent and two daughters Shayla (14) and Allie (12). 14 | 2016 MSUB Men’s Soccer Media Guide | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com

Yellowjacket Soccer Field The MSU Billings soccer field, known as Yellowjacket Soccer Field, is located on the College of Technology campus and is home to both the men's and women's soccer teams. The field is located at the corner of Shiloh and Central Avenue in west Billings. The field underwent a renovation prior to the 2007 season as a new artificial turf playing surface was installed in place of the original natural grass. A new press box, scoreboard and fence were added to the complex in seasons after, with the new 600-seat bleachers being installed following the completion of the 2011 season.

Men’s soccer 2016 season preview: Yellowjackets picked 3rd in GNAC preseason poll Wednesday, August 17, 2016 Coming off its first winning season since 2012, the MSUB men’s soccer team looks to build upon a successful 2015 season as the Yellowjackets are ranked third in the GNAC preseason coaches’ poll. BILLINGS, Mont. – Strength up the middle of the pitch will form the spine that will define the Montana State University Billings men’s soccer team this season, as the Yellowjackets enter the fall with high expectations after their first winning year since 2012. MSUB finished the 2015 season with a record of 8-6-4 overall, and 6-5-3 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play for fourth place. Remaining in the hunt for a league title into the final three matches of last season, the ‘Jackets are optimistic to repeat the run and take a further step this fall. In the 2016 GNAC preseason coaches’ poll released Wednesday, the ‘Jackets were picked to finish in third place among the eight-team conference field. “Until the last three games of last year, we were in the mix to win the league, and this team knows what it feels like to compete for something until the end,” said fourth-year head coach Alex Balog. “Hopefully we can put ourselves in that position again. The character of our players is something we spend a lot of time on when it comes to recruiting, and because of that, the product on the field is getting better.” Returning at the core of the Yellowjackets’ lineup is an experienced group of upperclassmen from back-to-front at the center of the field. Returning for his third season in goal will be senior Tom Lohmann, fresh off of a Premier Development League national championship title with the Michigan Bucks during the summer of 2016. Lohmann was an honorable mention all-GNAC pick a season ago, after starting all 18 matches and holding a 1.16 goals-against average with 4-plus shutouts. “In my eyes we have the best goalkeeper in the conference in Tom, and with Joe Scott coming back and Caleb Van Blankenstein coming in, the competition for that position will increase,” Balog commented on his goalkeepers. Continuing the theme of strength up the middle, the veteran presence will extend forward from Lohmann’s box through senior center back Tom Saltwell, junior center mid Rhys Lambert, and junior striker Ricardo Palomino.

22 | 2016 MSUB Men’s Soccer Media Guide | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com

A three-year starter defensively, Saltwell has played in 45 matches in his three seasons and averaged north of 1,100 minutes per year. He will pilot the defensive unit, which also includes experienced returners in senior outside back Garret Robinson, junior Eli Williams, and sophomore Eli Herman. “Tom is our most vocal player, and he never shies away from a challenge,” Balog commented on Saltwell’s presence in the center of the defense. “He’s someone who knows the league very well, and who we can rely on to give one hundred percent for us. To have someone in the middle of the field who has been here a long time is invaluable.” The departure of senior center back Cameron Lee after the 2015 season left a hole next to Saltwell, where several incoming players have a chance to step in. Leading the pack is freshman Italian Oliver Posarelli, whose vision and technical ability have the potential to complement Saltwell’s 6-foot-3 presence. “With Cam leaving, we lost someone who played 70 games, and that’s why we brought in Oliver to replace him,” Balog said. “When we combine him and Tom in the middle we have everything we need in a pair of center backs.” Battling for playing time at the outside back position will be juniors Aidan Raj and Alexis Chavez, and freshmen Callan Martin, and Chad Triplett. French sophomore Guillaume Kremer will slot into the depth chart at the holding mid position, after transferring to MSUB from the University of Strasbourg. “All of those new guys have the ability to see the field right away, and there will be a lot of competition as they battle it out among themselves,” said Balog.

Freshman Defender Oliver Posarelli.

Anchoring the midfield unit will be Lambert, who wore the captain’s arm band a season ago and was a second-team all-GNAC performer in 2014. Lambert played upwards of 1,100 minutes over 17 matches last year, and contributed on the score sheet with a pair of goals. “Rhys is a true Yellowjacket, and someone who plays for MSUB with a lot of passion,” Balog said regarding the Australian international. “Whether it’s a good day or a bad one, you know the work rate you’re going to get out of him.” Recovering from a season-ending knee injury as a sophomore last year, Niklas Schregel will be a key factor in the midfield unit as well. Schregel had a goal and an assist as a freshman in 2014, and contributed two more goals in 13 games last year before his season was cut short. Now back to full strength, his 6-foot-4 frame will be a crucial element to the center of MSUB’s strategy. The youngest of MSUB’s positional groups, the midfield unit is full of incoming talent that will fit into the lineup. Junior Italian transfer Flavio Colasanti could see time in the middle of the field, while freshmen Ignacio Crespo, JD Hauenstein, and Ian Bream will be in the mix as well. Also back for the ‘Jackets is sophomore Adam Hepburn, who saw action in nine matches a season ago and recorded one assist. “The fact that we have so many players who can fit into so many different roles is one of our strengths this year,” Balog said. “We are versatile with our depth, and we feel that these guys have the ability to do well at multiple positions.” Leading the GNAC and the NCAA Division II west region with 16 goals in his first season last year, Palomino will spearhead a dangerous attacking unit. The 2015 GNAC Newcomer of the Year forced his way into MSUB’s record books as a sophomore, and will look to build on his scoring prowess with a strong cast of attacking players alongside him.

2016 MSUB Men’s Soccer Media Guide | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com | 23

“Ricardo proved he was a goal scorer last year, and we hope he can hit the ground running and stay consistent throughout this season,” Balog said. “He’s very hungry, he came back very fit, and he is in great spirits.” Also contributing to MSUB’s GNAC-best 35 goals scored and second-best 28 assists were returning seniors Thiago Novis and Julian Toenges. Novis chipped in four goals and a pair of assists in 13 games in his first season, while Toenges started all 18 matches and ranked second in the conference with 10 assists. The trio of Toenges, Novis, and Palomino created the majority of MSUB’s attack, and will be joined by a pair of transfers in senior Julien Dragomir and junior Victor Sanchez. Dragomir joins MSUB’s squad after scoring four goals at NCAA Division I UNLV in 2014, and provides a further punch at the top of the offense. Sanchez, a Portland, Ore., native, tallied nine goals in two years at Peninsula College. “Our offense is going to be a bit more versatile this year when it comes to going forward,” said Balog. “We are going to fit Julien and Victor into what we had last year, and if we can get all of those guys on the same page, we will have dynamite going forward.” MAKING AN IMPACT ON AND OFF THE FIELD

Junior Forward Ricardo Palomino.

The Yellowjackets will continue their partnership with Team IMPACT for the third straight season, as now-eight-year-old Sebastien Easton continues to be a part of the team’s roster. Adopted into the program prior to the 2014 season, Sebastien has battled through cancer and fought the disease into remission, while maintaining a close relation-

ship with the ‘Jackets on the pitch and off. Sebastien and his family will continue to be present at MSUB’s home matches throughout the season, and the team will surround many of its community service and engagement activities around him. “Our community involvement has become a lot more important over the last few years,” said Balog. “Sebastien is a good example of that, but we have done many other projects as a team as well.”

ABOUT THE COACHING STAFF In his sixth year overall within the men’s soccer program at MSUB, the 2016 season will be Balog’s fourth in charge. He has tabulated a 17-25-12 (.426) overall record, and has helped the team improve on its win total in each of the last two seasons. A native of Leuven, Belgium, Balog holds the NSCAA Premier Diploma, NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma, and NSCAA Level III Goalkeeping Diploma. Alumnus Thomas Chameraud will return for his third year in an assisting role, holding the elevated title of associate head coach for the 2016 season. Chameraud was a former all-region midfielder for the ‘Jackets, and graduated from MSUB in 2012 before completing a master’s degree in 2016. Guido Riffeser, a senior on the team in 2015, will begin his first fall season as an assistant coach, and former Yellowjackets Kyle Emerick and Fernando Perez will complete the staff as volunteer assistant coaches. “I’m happy that Fernando has joined the staff, and to have Kyle back and Guido joining us this fall,” Balog said. “With Thomas as associate head coach as well, I look forward to working with all of them and can rely on them heavily. I feel that there is a good synergy between our coaching staff and players.” MSUB kicks off the 2016 preseason with an exhibition game against Rocky Mountain College at 5 p.m. on Friday evening at Yellowjacket Field. The ‘Jackets have a pair of exhibition matches against Carroll College (Aug. 22) and Northwest College (Aug. 27), before opening the regular season at 2015 NCAA Division II national runner-up Cal Poly Pomona.

#14 - CALLAN MARTIN

POSITION: DEFENDER CLASS: FRESHMAN HOMETOWN: SPOKANE, WASHINGTON PREVIOUS SCHOOL: JOEL E. FARRIS HIGH SCHOOL MAJOR: BIOLOGY EXPERIENCE: HIGH SCHOOL

Joel E. Ferris High School: Four-year letterwinner and helped team to a 44-15 record in his final three seasons…team captain for both highschool and club teams…team finished second academically in the state in 2013 and 2014…through three seasons, amassed 14 goals and 13 assists, with three finishes counting as game-winners…led team to deep playoff runs as a sophomore and junior, including a district title in 2013…in club play was selected to the Olympic Development Program and led team in schoring at the Region IV ODP Championships…also a member of the Washington State Puget Sound Premier League Academy team in 2014. Coach Balog on Martin: "Blue collar is the first term that comes to mind when I think about Callan. However, underneath that very competitive and hard-working shell lies a very good understanding of the game. Callan masters the basic technical skillset and has a quality that is slowly getting forlorn: He can play simple when needed. His first touch is good and he is a good passer of the ball. Because of these attributes, Callan can play in the middle of the field but also reinforce our back line. This versatility will serve him well at MSUB. Besides his soccer qualities, Callan is a good person, and that is very important to us. I know with Callan we get a very well-rounded person, both on and off the field." Martin on choosing MSUB: "I chose MSUB because I love the outdoors and it is a great fit for me academically. I knew right away from my official visit that a family atmosphere exists with this team and it begins with the coaching staff."

#29 - OLIVER POSARELLI POSITION: DEFENDER CLASS: FRESHMAN HOMETOWN: VERONA, ITALY PREVIOUS SCHOOL: EDUCANDATO STATLE AGLI ANGELI MAJOR: UNDECIDED EXPERIENCE: HIGH SCHOOL Prior to MSUB: Member of the Chievo Verona Academy as a youth player, one of the top soccer atmospheres in northern Italy…brings experience and a solid, 5-foot-11 frame as a defender to complement MSUB’s back line. Coach Balog on Posarelli: "Oliver comes from a soccer background that is second-to-none. We expect him to come in and make an immediate impact on our program, and he is a defender who can play multiple positions across the back line. Oliver's experience, technical ability, and speed will be massive assets for us. Our belief is that he will fit in very well with our group of recruits and returners, and we hope to build the program around him for the next few years." Posarelli on choosing MSUB: "I discovered MSUB this winter in a showcase near Rome. There, assistant coach Guido Riffeser spoke to me about MSUB, and I found it to be a good opportunity for me to prove myself. I like the idea of getting to know a new culture and to do my best on the field."

#15 - CHAD TRIPLETT

POSITION: DEFENDER CLASS: FRESHMAN HOMETOWN: EDMONDS, WASHINGTON PREVIOUS SCHOOL: MEADOWDALE HIGH SCHOOL MAJOR: CRIMINAL JUSTICE EXPERIENCE: HIGH SCHOOL

Meadowdale High School: Four-year letterwinner in soccer under head coach Brian Monroe-Jones…first-team all-Wesco League pick as a junior…team captain as a senior…won team’s Newcomer of the Year award…honorable mention all-conference pick as a freshman. Coach Balog on Triplett: "With the graduation of (2015 senior) Sam Butterworth, we lost our starting left back for the past four years. Those shoes won't be easy to fill, but with Chad we are getting a player who has what we are looking for in that position. He is someone who loves to go up and down the flank, and bringing in a left back with that profile was important for us. I also think that with Chad we are getting a student-athlete who is enthusiastic about the prospect of playing for MSUB. Chad made a good impression during his visit, and the boys have taken to him. He watched us play a number of times last season, and the interest he has shown in our program hasn't gone unnoticed. He is a well-rounded young man whom we want to help develop on and off the field." Triplett on choosing MSUB: "I chose MSUB because of my experience when I was on my official visit. The team is very passionate about soccer, the community, and school. It was a family feel and I knew it would be a team that would push my abilities to improve. That is the kind of team I would like to play for. I also love to fish so that is a plus going to MSUB."

Coach Balog on VanBlankenstein: "Caleb caught my eye with his very steady level of goalkeeping, and has a big upside. Caleb's distribution is top class and he is very explosive. He and I will be working very closely to improve on a daily basis, and to make him into a solid NCAA Division II goalkeeper. With Caleb we also get a good student, who knows what our program is about. He got a very good idea what our program's philosophy is like while he was here on his visit. I look forward to having him here in August and I am excited to see how he will match up with our other two goalkeepers." VanBlankenstein on choosing MSUB: "I chose MSUB because when I was on my official visit, I immediately felt like part of the team. A fitting finish: Perez scores top-class goal, winding up career with ‘Jackets Friday, October 16, 2015 After transferring to MSUB in 2014, Fernando Perez carries himself as an experienced senior leader with the ability to be a game-changer in moment’s like Thursday’s world-class, game-winning goal. MSUB SPORTS – As the second half was set to kick off at Yellowjacket Field on Thursday, Montana State University Billings men’s soccer head coach Alex Balog elected to go with a familiar lineup save for one switch. The Yellowjackets would start the second half the same way they started the match, except senior Fernando Perez was slotted in as a center midfielder to begin the final 45 minutes against tough Great Northwest Athletic Conference opponent Northwest Nazarene University. Little did he know it, but Perez, a transfer to MSUB last year from Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo., was about to make the most significant contribution of his career for the ‘Jackets. Six minutes into the second half, Perez watched as junior Julian Toenges, controlled the ball down the left side of the field and took on several NNU defenders. Toenges’s patience on the play allowed Perez to make a run towards the top of the 18-yard box on the right side, and what happened next prompted a chaotic celebration on the field by Perez and his teammates. Perez had one chance to make his shot towards goal count, as he knew the only way to finish the rolling cross by Toenges was going to be with a single touch from his left – off – foot. Burying his head in concentration, Perez swung his left leg around with perfect timing, meeting the Nike Ordem ball with the instep of his left foot and curling it expertly into the upper-right corner of the goal. A customary dive from NNU goalkeeper Ryan Foo didn’t come until the ball had already hit the back of the net – there was no play on a shot that perfect. What started as an ecstatic Rhys Lambert failing to keep his legs under him as he embraced Perez turned into a swarm of Yellowjackets around the senior who had just nudged his team in front 1-0. When the final whistle sounded 40 minutes later and the goal stood as the game-winner, Perez had done more than just score his second goal of the season and perhaps best of his life.

He had helped the Yellowjackets claim sole possession of second place in the GNAC standings with six matches left to play in the regular season. He had shown the flash of brilliance that caught the eye of Balog during an I.D. camp two years ago, when he ultimately decided Perez was a player the ‘Jackets could not pass up. FOLLOWING HIS BROTHER’S LEAD Perez was born in Greeley, Colo., where he and his two brothers and sister grew up with athletics as a fundamental activity. The youngest of the four, Perez looked up to his older brother Jesus who began to excel in soccer at the highschool level while Perez was still at an impressionable young age. “My oldest brother didn’t start playing soccer until high school,” Perez said. “I would go watch him play, and that’s when I realized I should give it a try.” Perez first started playing organized soccer at age nine, learning the game dually through watching his brother and playing on a club team. By the time he reached high school, Perez had stood out enough on the pitch to earn a starting spot with the varsity team and began taking his game to the next level. It was ultimately Perez’s brother who inspired him to reach out to the college offers that were beginning to trickle in, and Perez elected to stay close to home and begin his career at LCCC. “I never thought I wanted to play college soccer, but my brother really influenced me to continue my career and get to where I am now,” Perez said. “I just wanted to follow in his footsteps.” Perez also considered the prospect of kicking on a college football team, but his passion for soccer fueled his decision to continue the sport he considers his first love. GETTING HIS MSUB I.D. Perez began his career at LCCC with the understanding that he would have a tough decision to make after his first two seasons. He would eventually have to transfer to another school to complete his degree, and if he wanted his soccer career to continue he had to find the right fit. “I was in the middle of whether or not I should continue playing,” Perez said. “I still loved the sport, and I realized that I should keep playing and see where I ended up.” Where Perez did end up was in front of Balog’s eyes at MSUB’s annual I.D. camp in March of 2014. Standing out among the wide array of hopeful collegiate players, Balog knew quickly that Perez had the skill not just to make his roster, but to grow into an impact player in the two seasons of eligibility he had left. “Fernando ended up at MSUB almost by accident,” Balog said. “He came to one of our I.D. camps in 2014, and our guys who were there during the camp all came to me and told me we needed to try to sign Fernando. We did, and it has proven to be a great decision, both for him and for us as a program.” During his first-ever trip to Montana for the camp, MSUB’s campus stood out to Perez as he began to see himself fitting into the university. An education major, Perez felt MSUB could supply him with a valuable academic experience, as he has aspirations to one day combine the paths of teaching and coaching. “I liked the campus, and everything about the coaches,” Perez said. “Alex gave me a great opportunity to come here and continue my college soccer career. I was excited about that.” 68 | 2016 MSUB Men’s Soccer Media Guide | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com

ADJUSTING TO DIVISION II Just as Balog suspected during the camp, Perez came in and had an impact right away. In his first season, he started nine matches and played in 13 as a central midfielder, racking up 746 minutes and taking 16 shots. Though he saved his first goal for this season, the maturity and experienced decision making were the traits that stood out most to his new head coach. “I like that Fernando has an apparent beacon of calmness in the middle of the field where things can often become frantic,” Balog said. “Fernando is also someone who has completely bought into our program’s philosophy and fits in very well. We know we can rely on him on and off the field.” Entering the program only with community college experience, Perez credits 2015 seniors Kyle Emerick and Matt Brink with helping him adjust and providing leadership to the program. “They had been here, and they were senior captains,” Perez said. “They were great guys to hang around with and to be around.” Perez quickly learned how to manage his time, between his busy class schedule and the demanding agenda required by collegiate athletics. One thing that stood out to Perez was the conglomeration of different styles within MSUB’s program, with players from all over the globe coming together and playing as a unit. Perez has roots in Mexico, with Spanish being his first language. Being bilingual helped with Perez’s acclimation to the team, as he was easily able to pick up on the different chatter throughout the squad in multiple different languages. “When it comes to soccer, you have to be open-minded to different people and the way that they play,” Perez commented on the diverse team. “It wasn’t too hard to adapt to. Once we had been here for two weeks, we learned how each other played.” FINISHING STRONG “Fernando is a composed, mature, intelligent young man. He likes to listen and “steal” with his eyes and ears. Few things go unnoticed by him. His composed character translates itself in his demeanor on the field, where as a center midfielder, he often seems unfazed by what is going on around him.” – MSUB head coach Alex Balog on Fernando Perez. Just as Balog described him, Perez was totally unfazed Thursday when he found the back of the net. He used his keen observation to recognize the play Toenges was setting up, and hit his mark with a composed, world-class finish. While the game-winning goal was a tangible reminder of Perez’s ability to influence a match, it is the effort that he displays winning challenges in the midfield and distributing the ball with intentional skill that have defined his career at MSUB. “Fernando is someone who will give everything he has when we step onto the field,” Balog said. “The best compliment I can give him is that I wish we could have had him for four years instead of two, but having him beats not having him.” Perez is thankful for the opportunity to continue his career with the Yellowjackets, recognizing the unique family aspect of the team he has grown with over the past two years. “It is special how we all come together and make somebody feel welcome,” said Perez, who is often referred to by his teammates as ‘Nando’. “Even if it is a recruit, someone from the community, or if they play a different sport, we bring them in and make them part of the Yellowjacket Family. It is great to end my college career here playing for Alex and Thomas (Chameraud). I have enjoyed every second of it.” With the Yellowjackets now in second place in the GNAC standings, Perez and his teammates are poised to continue the momentum of their current two-match winning streak with an opportunity to keep rising in the conference table. “Everybody just came ready to work, ready to play soccer and to have fun,” Perez said. “That is what is happening right now, and everybody is just enjoying it.” 2016 MSUB Men’s Soccer Media Guide | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com | 69

MSUB men’s soccer 2015 season review Wednesday, November 18, 2015 Completing its first winning season since 2012, MSUB’s men’s soccer team finishes the 2015 season with a record of 8-6-4 in fourth place in the GNAC. BILLINGS, Mont. – For the first time since the 2012 season, the Montana State University Billings men’s soccer team turned in a winning record and finished the Great Northwest Athletic Conference campaign in fourth place. The Yellowjackets ended their season with a record of 8-6-4 overall, and were one game over .500 in GNAC games at 6-5-3. “I am very happy with the season,” commented third-year head coach Alex Balog. “If you compare where we came from in 2013 the incline has been incredibly steep, not just in our record but in the caliber of young men we are bringing in. Their performance in the classroom, commitment to serving this community, and commitment to overall excellence are some things that are just at a different level from where the program was a few years ago.” Under Balog’s direction, the ‘Jackets went from a 3-10-5 season in 2013 to a 6-9-3 mark overall last year before breaking through with a winning record this season. Fueling the turn-around for MSUB was a significant increase in offensive output, as the Yellowjackets led the GNAC in goals (35), goals per game (1.94), and ranked second in points (98), and assists (28). MSUB combined the top offense in the conference with a strong defensive unit, which ranked fourth in goals allowed (24), goals-against average (1.27), and shutouts (5). “After last season, we set out to find a real goal scorer,” Balog said. “We wanted to find just one difference maker, and we knew we had to be patient in finding him.”

Balog and the ‘Jackets knew they had found that player in sophomore transfer Ricardo Palomino, but they could not have projected that he would lead the GNAC in goals and be a first-team all-conference pick while sharing the Newcomer of the Year award. In just one season, Palomino has already etched his name into MSUB’s record books, as his 16 goals were the fourth-most in a single season behind only former NCAA Division II Player of the Year Sam Charles. Palomino had six multi-goal games, including a four-goal performance against South Dakota School of Mines on Sept. 13, and a heroic hat trick against Concordia on Oct. 17 that erased a 2-0 halftime deficit and pushed MSUB to an improbable victory. Palomino also had a pair of assists on the season, finishing with a GNAC-best 34 points. As of Nov. 18 his total goals ranked No. 12 in all of Division II and his total points ranked No. 18. He was twice picked as the GNAC Player of the Week throughout the season. “We looked at a number of players, but we only offered our last scholarship when we were convinced we had a guy who would help make us successful on the field,” Balog said. “Bringing Ricardo in was very important, but there was much more that worked out for us than bringing in a goal scorer. It was a real team effort, and making our guys believe that they were better than our opponents was an important factor for us.” 2015 Junior Julian Toenges. While Palomino stole headlines, MSUB’s offense was also fueled by the emergence of junior Julian Toenges. In his second year with the Yellowjackets, Toenges turned in the second-most assists in the GNAC (10) and earned second-team all-conference honors. Toenges finished the year with 16 points, starting all 18 matches and playing 1,448 minutes as a midfielder. His best individual performance came in the form of three assists and a goal against South Dakota Mines, and he completed the year with three goals. “To have Julian understand and believe in the fact that he can be a dominant winger in our conference was huge,” Balog said. Four more graduating seniors played key roles as midfielders, as veteran leadership was one of the key factors for MSUB this season. Starting 10 games and playing in all 18 was Fernando Perez, who scored a pair of goals including a crucial game-winner in a 1-0 triumph at home over Northwest Nazarene University on Oct. 15. “If I had to pick a player of the season, Fernando’s is probably the first name that comes to mind,” Balog said. “He is a guy we would have liked to have for four years, because he is a true warrior. He was one of our most consistent players, and never crumbled under pressure.” Daragh Kavanagh, Guido Riffeser, and David Loeung also put in quality minutes each contributing to MSUB’s offensive output in different ways. Kavanagh scored his first career goal at home against Seattle Pacific on Oct. 10, while Riffeser had an assist to Palomino in the Yellowjackets’ home match against Saint Martin’s. “Daragh is a player who is able to recognize his spot on the team and who pushes the players around him to be better,” Balog commented. “He definitely contributed to our season and went out with a bang. Guido is very well respected by the players and coaches, and is a guy who has made a very positive contribution to the program as well. During his one semester here he became a real Yellowjacket.”

2016 MSUB Men’s Soccer Media Guide | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com | 73

Loeung began the season as one of MSUB’s brightest offensive talents, until a knee injury sidelined him for the remainder of the year. Through eight games, Loeung had three goals and a pair of assists, totaling eight points in 536 minutes. “David started the season off unbelievably well, as his junior year had been somewhat rocky,” said Balog. “He impacted play on and off the field. The David who we got back in August is someone who I’d like to work with again.” On the defensive side of the ball, the Yellowjackets were anchored by a back line of upperclassmen playing in front of junior goalkeeper Tom Lohmann. Leading the way as team captain was four-year starter Cameron Lee, who started 17 matches and played 1,537 minutes as a center back. In his four-year career, Lee started 68 games and played in 70, logging more than 6,000 minutes. He was an honorable mention all-conference pick this season, and also currently serves as MSUB’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president. “Cameron is a truly unbelievable leader,” Balog said. “On the field he is the first to go into battle, and off the field he is a guy our team leans very heavily on. His positive attitude and never-say-die mentality are some things that are going to be remembered in this program for a long time.” 2015 Senior Cameron Lee. Another four-year starter along the back line was Sam Butterworth, who started 16 matches and had three assists on the year. A constant threat both defensively and offensively along the left side of the field, Butterworth played in 67 matches in his four seasons and finished his stellar career with 5,825 minutes played. “Sam is a great character, and a very good player,” Balog said. “He has been one of the better left backs in the GNAC over the last four years, and he is a guy who never gave up or stopped fighting.” Joining Lee and Butterworth were juniors Tom Saltwell and Garret Robinson, who each helped anchor the defensive unit. Robinson led all field players with 1,539 minutes this season, starting all 18 matches and contributing an assist. In his third season as a starter, Saltwell played 1,231 minutes through 15 games and patrolled the defensive third with Lee in the center of the field. Filling in the center of the field defensively as midfielders for the majority of the year were Rhys Lambert and Niklas Schregel. Lambert served as team captain and scored a pair of goals in 1,174 minutes. For Schregel, a promising sophomore season was cut short after 13 games as a significant knee injury ended the year. He had scored two goals and played upwards of 900 minutes as a holding mid before being injured. “That right there is the spine of the team for 2016,” Balog commented on his returners in the midfield and on defense. “Defensively bringing back Tom and Garret, and in the midfield Rhys and Julian, as seniors those guys will want to go out in good fashion. All of those returners are guys who contributed and are on the same page with us in terms of the direction of the program.”

Standing as the rock behind MSUB’s defense, Lohmann was picked as an honorable mention all-conference goalkeeper after recording five shutouts and holding a goals-against average of 1.16 on the year. He made 55 saves while starting all 18 games, and even contributed an assist offensively as he proved his effectiveness as a distributor. “Tom played a season that was a lot better and more consistent than last year’s,” Balog said. “In my eyes there is no doubt that he is the best keeper in the GNAC, and he keeps us in games with his hands, feet, and brain. I am looking forward to him pushing himself to a new and higher level next year.” Several newcomers and younger players got their first taste of action with MSUB, as the nucleus of talent within the program runs deep. Junior striker Thiago Novis played a big role in MSUB’s offensive scheme, scoring four goals and adding a pair of assists in his first year after transferring from Fresno Pacific University. Novis earned GNAC Player of the Week honors during the final week of the regular season, as he scored twice in MSUB’s final match against the University of Mary. “Bringing Ricardo in was very important, but I think if you look at Thiao who played so much better in the second half than the first you see another player who deserves credit,” Balog said, as Novis battled an early-season injury before finishing the year strong. “We are looking for him to have another consistent season for us next year, and we know he is going to want to hit the ground running in the fall.” In their second season in the program, sophomores Jorge Paez, Strom Nuernberger, Eli Williams, and Joe Scott each contributed as well. Paez scored and had two assists, while playing in all 18 games and starting nine. Williams and Nuernberger each had roles filling in as outside backs, with Williams starting two games and Nuernberger starting one throughout the season. In goal, Scott saw action in four matches and totaled 74 minutes behind Lohmann. Freshman Jacob Richter played a vital role offensively, as he had three assists and scored his first collegiate goal on the final day of the season at home. Adam Hepburn also made his way onto the scoring sheet with an assist on the year, playing primarily as a midfielder. Filling in as defenders, Anthony Morrell and Chris Box each also saw action. Morrell started a pair of games and played in a dozen overall. “We have a number of players who have tasted some success and who now know what the GNAC is about,” Balog said. “They have experienced what it feels like to be playing for something until the end of the season, and I know these younger guys are going to give it their all going forward. They owe it to themselves and to the program, and to the guys who have laid the foundation for the success we are having right now.” TRIBUTE TO TREVOR Throughout the Yellowjackets’ season, the team played with the memory of fallen teammate Trevor Wildberger in their hearts. Wildberger had committed to MSUB as a goalkeeper, before passing away in August after a battle with cancer. The Yellowjackets honored Wildberger and his family during a pregame ceremony on MSUB Kicks Cancer Day on Oct. 17, during which TEAM Impact team member Sebastien Easton performed the ceremonial kickoff prior to the match. The ‘Jackets also compiled a tribute video to Wildberger and his family, sharing condolences and thoughts about what he meant to the program. RECORD-BOOK REARRANGEMENT Through 54 career matches, Balog’s record as head coach improved to 17-25-12 (.426), and he has gone 15-19-8 (.452) in GNAC matches over three seasons. The Yellowjackets were honored as the GNAC Team of the Week after defeating Northwest Nazarene and Concordia at home on Oct. 15-17, and remained in contention for a GNAC title until the final two weeks of the regular season. MSUB’s five goals in a game – scored on three different occasions – tied for the sixth-best in program history. Overall on the season, MSUB’s 35 goals were the fifth-most in Yellowjacket history, while its 28 assists and 98 total points were each fourth-most. Novis’s goal 19 seconds into the match against Saint Martin’s on Oct. 10 tied for second-fastest in MSUB history, and the 50 seconds in between goals by Palomino and Loeung at University of Mary on Sept. 19 was the third-fastest time between consecutive goals. 2016 MSUB Men’s Soccer Media Guide | @MSUBMSoc | www.msubsports.com | 75
