In a close battle with Rocky Mountain College, the MSUB men’s golf team falls to the Battlin’ Bears 11-9 in a seasonopening Collegiate Cup match play event. BILLINGS, Mont. – Mirroring a narrow victory on Day 1, the Rocky Mountain College men’s golf team scored a one-hole win over Montana State University Billings on Day 2 to capture the Collegiate Cup 11-9 which ran Thursday at Pryor Creek Golf Club and Friday at Peter Yegen Golf Club. “Our men played strong all the way until the end,” said MSUB head coach Shawn O’Brien. “RMC capitalized on a few holes on which we did not, and that is the difference between winning and losing an event like this.” The format featured singles play action on both days, a four ball dual event on Day 1 and an alternate shot on Day 2. The Battlin’ Bears picked up the early edge as Jordy Donoven and Nathan Cachia teamed up to beat MSUB’s Connor Miele and Michael Porter in four ball on Day 1, the lone doubles event that didn’t end up even. In singles play, Miele, Porter, and Parker Bradbury each had wins for MSUB on Day 1, while Bobby Anderson, Tayler Noble, and Tyler Ordahl were victorious for the Bears. MSUB’s Scott Larson and RMC’s HoTae Kim ended up even in the rubber singles match, as RMC won the Day 1 competition.
The Bears won 2 of 3 in alternate shot on Day 2, and the teams again finished even in singles play. The same three won their matchups for the ‘Jackets on Day 2, while Austin Walter and RMC’s Hunter Anderson finished even in their singles play affair. In the alternate shot, a win by Miele and Porter over Donoven and Cachia wasn’t enough for MSUB, as the Battlin’ Bears’ Noble and Kim as well as Ordahl and Murphy each won their respective matchups. “Both teams were tied going into the last two holes, and they finished stronger than us the past two days,” O’Brien said. “It was a great event to kick off the season, and I am looking forward to tomorrow traveling to Denver for the RMAC #1 Golf Invitational. We are a very young team, and I feel this was some valuable experience gained heading into our NCAA fall schedule.” The event, which was sponsored by Domino’s, began with a banquet on Wednesday evening at the Crowne Plaza Hotel during which the pairings for the weekend were unveiled. Miele was selected as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day for the Yellowjackets. AHEAD: MSUB begins its regular season with the RMAC No. 1 Golf Invitational in Denver, which is hosted by Regis University running Sept. 14-15. 2015 MSUB/RMC Collegiate Cup – Results Day 1 – Pryor Creek Golf Club Men’s Match Play – Singles Connor Miele (MSUB) def.
