The Yellowjackets wrap up the three-round Chico State InterWest Classic on Tuesday and finish in 12th place. CHICO, Calif. – Completing the three-round Chico State University InterWest Classic on Tuesday, the Montana State University Billings men’s golf team posted a team score of 926 (309-307-310) to finish in 12th place at the par-72, 6,951yard Butte Creek Country Club. The Yellowjackets were led by freshman Braden Luper, who finished tied for 38th place with a three-round total of 228 (73-74-81). Luper started the tournament with a bang, carding four birdies in each of his first two rounds on Monday. He then played the front-9 on Tuesday at 1-over-par with another birdie and seven pars in his final round. Juniors Connor Miele and Michael Porter finished strongly for the Yellowjackets, as each player turned in a round of 74 on the final day. For Miele, it was the second straight 74 at the tournament, as he overcame an 81 in the first round to finish tied for 42nd place overall with a 229 (81-74-74). Porter finished tied for 53rd with a 232 (81-77-74). After just one birdie his first time through the course, Miele saved strokes nine times over his next two rounds with four birdies in Round 2 and five in Round 3. Porter showed steady improvement over his three rounds as well, with two birdies in the second round and three more in the third.


Finishing tied for 74th place for MSUB was freshman Scott Larson, who totaled a score of 241 (76-82-83). Larson had birdies in the first and third rounds. Completing the field for MSUB was freshman Austin Walter, who finished in 82nd place with a 245 (79-85-81). Walter had a pair of birdies in the first round and one each in the second and third rounds. Cal State San Marcos rallied in the final round to defeat host Chico State University, as the Cougars claimed the team title with a three-round score of 867 (298-280-289). The Wildcats finished in second place with an 873 (282-292-299). Individually, CSUSM’s Dylan Healey shot a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to hang onto his lead and claim medalist honors with a 211 (72-66-73). Fellow Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools Simon Fraser University, Western Washington University, and Northwest Nazarene University all competed at the event as well. SFU finished third with an 882 (289-293-300), WWU finished fifth with an 887 (294-300-293), and NNU checked in ninth with a 907 (303-301-303). Porter earned St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Day honors as he cut off the most strokes from his score between rounds two and three. UP NEXT: The Yellowjackets return home to host the MSUB Fall Invitational this week, with action running Thursday and Friday at Pryor Creek Golf Club in Huntley, Mont.
