Senior Robert Peterson won the 5,000 meters at the Montana State University Open.

Peterson earns event title and Flanagan a school record for the MSUB men’s track and field team at the meet in Bozeman, Mont.

BOZEMAN, Mont. – After a long break from competition, the MSU Billings men’s track and field team returned to their indoor season with a meet at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse in Bozeman, Mont., on Friday, Jan. 15.

Senior Robert Peterson won the 5,000 meters in a time of 15:18.80. The Skyview High School graduate just barely missed the NCAA Division II provisional mark in the event.

Junior Nels Flanagan set the MSUB school record in the weight throw with a distance of 15.92m. The native of Big Timber, Mont., exceeded the previous record of 15.78m set by Dylan Buehler in 2014.

The Montana State University Open contained competition from NCAA Division I Montana State University and the University of Montana, as well as NAIA Carroll College and Rocky Mountain College.

“We seemed a little sluggish coming off the break,” MSUB head coach Dave Coppock said. “It is really early in the season. The students have only been back for a few days and it is tough to come back and compete after a holiday break.”

The last competition for the Yellowjackets was on Dec. 5, 2015, in Spearfish, S.D., at an event hosted by Black Hills State University.

“Robert and Nels both had really good performances though,” Coppock continued. “I know the athletes learned a lot about where they are in this part of the season. It is really early yet and we have a ways before the conference championships.”

Junior Landon Polkow finished fifth in the 400 meter dash in 53.57. Kaelen Shay placed seventh in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.22. Shay also came in eighth in the 200 meters, crossing the finish line in 23.94.

Sophomore Brady Ostermiller placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 13.43m.

NEXT UP: The Yellowjackets return to Spearfish, S.D., for the Dave Little Alumni Mile meet on Jan. 23.
